Well, you could learn from this Japanese restaurant that hires monkeys for the job. In order to make them look more human, the restaurant owner even masks(用面具遮掩) their faces. The restaurant is Kayabuki, which a traditional Japanese restaurant. They have hired a couple of monkeys named Yat-chan and Fuku-chan to work as waiters (or waitresses, we’re not sure). 16-year-old Yat-chan is the older of the two, but he moves quickly between tables as he takes the customers’ drink orders. Fuku-chan gives customers a hot towel and helps them clean their hands before they order their drinks, as is the custom in Japan. Believe it or not, the pair is actually certified(授予执照) by local authorities to work at the restaurant. The customers like them as well, so they give them beans as tips. One customer, Takayoshi, said, “The monkeys are actually better waiters than some really bad human ones.”Yat-chan and Fuku-chan were once the household pets of the restaurant owner, Kaoru Otsuka. But the older one started imitating him in restaurant duties, and that was when he realized they were actually capable of working there. “Yat-chan first learned by just watching me working in the restaurant,” he said. “It all started when one day I gave him a hot towel and he brought the towel to the customer.”Some customers even feel that the little monkeys are just like children, or even better. 62-year-old Shiochi Yano, a regular at Kayabuki, says, “Actually, they’re better. My son doesn’t li sten to me, but Yat-chan will.” Customers also say that Yat-chan is able to understand exact orders and remember them. “We called out for more beer,” said one customer, “and he just brought us some beer. She felt bad about that. The 10-year-old girl decided to befriend Rafael Anaya, but she also noticed something else —he struggled to understand English. Instead of letting that stop her, she used Google Translate to handwrite a note in Spanish asking him to join her for lunch. Her act earned her the “Student of the Month” award for October at her school.Rafael had moved to Temecula, California from Mexico at the beginning of the school year. He often cried after returning home from school because he felt so lonely. Amanda didn’t know that when she wrote the letter. She simply knew that he spoke Spanish and that he was lonely. She spent the afternoon carefully writing a letter. When she got home, she couldn’t wait to tell her mother, Kimber Kinard, about the letter, wanting her to proofread(校对) it.But Kinard felt confused, because she didn’t understand Spanish, either. So Amanda helped her use the app to understand it. Kinard was excited and tearful because she thought it was the nicest thing. The note read: “Would you like to sit with me today? Look for me and I will show you where I sit. We can chat or simply tell interesting stories.”The next day, Amanda handed the note to Rafael. He gave her a hug. But it wasn’t until their maths class that he said “yes” to lunch. The two have been sitting together ever since. The note helped Rafael feel more comfortable and encouraged him to work harder on his English. It has robots and algorithms(计算程序) running the shop. Their job is to solve a familiar problem: it’s football night and you order a ham and mushroom pizza for you and your friends. It arrives later than you’d hoped and it’s cold.Zume co-founder Julia Collins says, “Pizza is not meant to sit in a cardboard box. The best pizza com es right out of the oven.”In reality, people tend to order pizzas instead of eating them in a restaurant. Most pizzas are delivered in a cardboard box and are not hot when they arrive, so they don’t taste that good. Zume’s solution is a delivery truck which is equipped with 56 mini-ovens.Here’s how it works. A customer places an order on the app. Inside the Zume factory, a team of mostly robots puts the 14-inch pizza into its own oven. Whether the truck has five pizzas or 56, it needs just one human worker — to drive and deliver them to your doorstep.“She doesn’t have to think about when to turn the ovens on or off,” Collins says. “She doesn’t have to think about what route to take or whom to go to first. All of that is controlled by our algorithm.” Four minutes before the truck is scheduled to arrive at a doorstep, the algorithm starts the oven(or ovens) to finish cooking that order. Each pizza is then put into a special pizza box, which is not made of cardboard. The driver then parks, cuts the pizza with a special knife and delivers it hot. When you call a pizza store and are told “It’ll take an hour,” you hang up and it doesn’t get your business. Because Zume is run mostly by robots, it doesn’t have that problem. This week, Zume is beginning to use truck s to deliver to real customers in Mountain View.12.Which pizza tastes best, according to the text?A.One that is made by a factory.B.One that is right out of the oven.C.One that is delivered to your home.D.One that is packed in a cardboard box.13.How does a customer order a pizza from Zume?A.By making a call.B.By using an app.C.By contacting some robots.D.By stopping a delivery truck. 14.What does the underlined word, “it”, in the last paragraph refer to? A.The Statue of Liberty MuseumB.'Cycling in the City'C.'She Persists: A Century of Women Artists in New York City'D.Museum of the DogJacob and Wilhelm Grimm were two young men from Germany who loved a good story. As university students, they became interested in folktales—traditional stories that people memorized and told again and again. They began to collect traditional folktales from storytellers all over Germany. Many were similar to stories told in France, Italy, Japan, and other countries. Between 1812 and 1814, the brothers published two books in German. These included stories like "Hansel and Gretel" and "Little Red Riding Hood."Despite the fact that Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are often associated with Snow White and Rapunzel, the brothers didn’t actually write any of those stories. In fact, the stories existed long before the two men were born in Germany in the mid 1780s. The fairy tales, in fact, were part of a rich oral tradition—passed down from generation to generation, often by women seeking to pass the time during household chores. In 1812, Jacob and Wilhelm published the stories as part of a collection titled Nursery and Household Tales, or what is now known as Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The Grimm brothers’ tales were about traditional life and beliefs. For example, forests are common in Ger many, and this image often appears in the Grimms’ stories. In the past, manypeople believed forests were dangerous places. In the Grimms’ stories, a forest is the home of evil witches, talking animals, and other magical beings.Although most people today think of these stories as fairy tales for children, the brothers first wrote them for adults. Many of their early tales were dark and a little scary. Later, the brothers changed the text of some of the original stories. They "softened" many of the tales and added drawings. This made them more appropriate(合适的) for children. Like the early tales, though, each story still has a moral: work hard, be good, and listen to your parents.Actually, university-trained philologists (语言学者) and librarians, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published more than fairy tales. They wrote books about mythology, and published scholarly works on linguistics and medieval studies.4.What is the main purpose of the reading?A.To compare the Grimms’ stories to modern children's stores.B.To explain why storytelling is important in Germany.C.To examine two of the Grimms' fairy tales.D.To give information about the Grimm brothers and their stories.5.Which of these statements is true about the Grimm brothers?A.They invented the fairy tales in their books.B.They wrote their books in different languages.C.They became interested in folktales as students.D.They traveled to many countries to collect stories.6.Which of the following best explains “moral” underlined in Paragraph 4 ?A.interest B.textC.story D.message7.What do we know about the Grimms' stories?A.The later stories had morals, like the early ones.B.The early stories were written for children.C.The early stories had a lot of drawings.D.The later stories reflected German life, but the early ones didn't.Can you imagine digging in your yard one day and finding a life-sized soldier made completely of clay? That’s what happened several decades ago when farmers in Xi'an, China, were digging wells.Archaeologists(考古学家)have since found about 6,000 more of these soldiers, along with horses, weapons, tools, and other artifacts. The huge army was meant to protect the tomb of the first ruler of China. The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, accomplished a huge amount during his rule. Between 221 and 210 B.C., he started the construction of the Great Wall. He built a large network of roads. He introduced a new writing system, currency(货币), and a set of measurements. The emperor also ordered the construction of a huge army oflife-sized terracotta soldiers. These, he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death. The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed to air during excavation(挖掘), the coating under the paint began to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history. Now new techniques are starting to reveal the army's true colors. Archaeologists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Chinese and German researchers have developed a special liquid to help preserve the soldiers’ colors. After they find a soldier or other artifacts(手工艺品), archaeologists spray it with the liquid. They then cover it in plastic. Archaeologists are also finding color s in the dirt around the soldiers. It’s important not to disturb the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost. “We are treating the earth as an artifact,”says archeologist Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. And, if you listen closely, you might even hear one singing.Marine (海洋)biologist Jim Darling has studied the songs of humpback whales for more than 25 years. While recording whale songs on a boat near Hawaii, he invited author Douglas Chadwick to experience diving with a humpback. In the water, Chadwick heard the whale’s songs in a way he never heard them before. “Suddenly, I no longer heard the whale’s voice in my ears,” he said. “I felt it inside my head and bones.”When swimming with the whale, Chadwick could see that the whale was aware of him, but not alarmed by his presence. Up in the boat, Darli ng recorded the whale’s song, which can be long and complex, sometimes lasting for 30 minutes or more. Actually, they are perhaps the longest songs sung by any animal.Darling says that only male humpbacks sing, but for unknown reasons, it was previously thought that they sang to attract females, but scientists showed this was incorrect when they played recordings of whale songs in the ocean and the female whales did not respond. Another idea is that male humpbacks compete with each other using songs, just as other male animals on land do using their horns or sharp teeth.Researchers have also found that humpback whale songs are different in different parts of the world, perhaps like whale national songs. They may also be like hit tunes on the radio, changing over time—from one year to the next, or even over a single breeding season whenthey produce young.Another member of the research team, photographer Flip Nicklin, recalls a special moment he had while interacting with a humpback. While he was snorkeling(潜水) some distance from the huge animal, it approached him until it was just a few metres away. It then gently carried Nicklin towards its eye with a flipper(鳍肢), as if examine him. Obviously, the urge to understand a different species goes both ways.12.What is this passage mainly about?A.How to record the humpbacks in the ocean.B.How humpbacks communicate with people.C.Humpback songs and what they might mean.D.the career of a man who is interested in humpbacks.13.When the scientists played songs in the ocean, ________.A.the songs attracted fish B.no female whales cameC.male whales became angry D.male and female whales came together 14.What is NOT true about humpback whales?A.Their songs are short and simple. People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new secret of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly likely that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog. However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attacking, while a dog doing the same signals giving in.In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”,and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously thought. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other. The meaning of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats anddogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.24. The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .A. earlyB. quicklyC. sweetlyD. violently25.
