After losing her job and home in 1984, Lynn Carr was living with her five-year-old son. “We slept in our car for about a week,” she said, “but then it was sold.
As she moved from one friend’s house to another, Lyn n began working toward a high-school-equivalence diploma(高中同等学历证书), listening to self-help tapes and making cakes.
After developing some new ways to make better cakes, she offered her cakes to a restaurant. The restaurant sold out all the cakes in several hours.

Height is just one of the thousands of features (特征) that your genes (基因) decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then maybe you will be tall, too. But if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential (潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
It’s natural that you’re wondering how fast you should grow. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 6 centimeters a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty.
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. 2cm here and 3cm there make a little difference to the height you’re at now. How have you been growing up to this height? What other changes may your body be going through?
Don’t be amazed if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a very quick growth during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later—between 7 and 13 for girls, 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.

Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed for a long time, we won’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences. People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs, education levels(水平) and so on.
How does language develop then? On the one hand, many of the languages changes begin with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s. Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for long. On the other hand, we get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them by making words shorter or combining words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English changes so much shows that it is alive and well.
