Tom Young was on his way home from a hard day’s work at a construction site, carrying his worn-out hammer which had accompanied him through thick and thin. With each step, his mind was filled with worry as he racked his brain to find money for his seriously ill son, Andrew, who was in great need of heart surgery. Tom had run out of choices and time. Desperation was beginning to set in, but he refused to let his son suffer helplessly. As hewalked, the weight of his troubles pressed heavily on his shoulders. So desperate was he that he even heard a hum in his ears. The next moment the hum was entirely covered by a loud sound. He turned in shock, and what he saw took his breath away. An expensive luxury car was wrapped around a big tree on the other side of the street, with its front twisted and flames starting to spring up from the car.Without a second thought, he ran to the flaming car. He noticed that although the young lady in the driver's seat did not seem to have been severely injured—apparently because of the open airbag-she was unconscious. Tom saw that the flames began to grow increasingly intense. He realized that he had to get the girl out of the car immediately because there was a high risk of the vehicle exploding at any time.He grabbed the handle and pulled it, but the door was bent and did not open. He used all his strength and tried again, but in vain. It was a sports car, so it had only two doors, and the other one was blocked by the tree. He decided that he had to break the glass to take her out as quickly as possible. He struck it forcefully with his fist but realized that there was no way he could break the thick glass with bare hands, and the flames were getting bigger.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
读后续写原题目:A Four-legged Guardian AngelSnow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was grim. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a real estate agent was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.Deep in despair, I sat typing up resumes and cover letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle nanny-dog, Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.Thinking of these, I couldn’t help heaving a sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking furiously and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
(英语)高三英语阅读理解专项训练100(附答案)及解析一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Since English biologist Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859, scientists have vastly improved their knowledge of natural history. However, a lot of information is still of the speculation, and scientists can still only make educated guesses at certain things. One subject that they guess about is why some 400 million years ago, animals in the sea developed limbs (肢) that allowed them to move onto and live on land.Recently, an idea that occurred to the US paleontologist (古生物学家) Alfred Romer a century ago became a hot topic once again.Homer thought that tidal (潮汐的) pools might have led to fish gaining limbs. Sea animals would have been forced into these pools by strong tides. Then, they would have been made either to adapt to their new environment close to land or die. The fittest among them grew to accomplish the transition (过渡) from sea to land.Romer called these earliest four-footed animals “tetrapods”. Science has alwa ys thought that this was a credible theory, but only recently has there been strong enough evidence to support it.Hannah Byrne is an oceanographer (海洋学家) at Uppsala University in Sweden. She announced at the 2018 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Oregon, US, that by using computer software, her team had managed to link Homer's theory to places where fossil deposits (沉积物) of the earliest tetrapods were found.According to the magazine Science, in 2014, Steven Balbus, a scientist at the University of Oxford in the UK, calculated that 400 million years ago, when the move from land to sea was achieved, tides were stronger than they are today. This is because the planet was 10 percent closer to the moon than it is now.The creatures stranded in the pools wou ld have been under the pressure of “survival of the fittest”, explained Mattias Green, an ocean scientist at the UK's University of Bangor. As he told Science, “After a few days in these pools, you become food or you run out of food... the fish that had large limbs had an advantage because they could flip (翻转) themselves back in the water.”As is often the case, however, there are others who find the theory less convincing. Cambridge University's paleontologist Jennifer Clark, speaking to Nature magazine, seemed unconvinced. “It's only one of many ideas for the origin of land-based tetrapods, any or all of which may have been a part of the answer,” she said.(1)Who first proposed the theory that fish might have gained limbs because of tidal pools?A. Alfred Romer.B. Charles Darwin.C. Hannah Byrne.D. Steven Balbus.(2)Why were tides stronger 400 million years ago than they are today according to Steven Balbus?A. There were larger oceans.B. Earth was closer to the moon.C. The moon gave off more energy.D. Earth was under greater pressure.(3)The underlined word “stranded” in Paragraph 8 probably means “________”.A. foundB. settledC. abandonedD. trapped(4)What is the focus of the article?A. The arguments over a scientific theory.B. The proposal of a new scientific theory.C. Some new evidence to support a previous theory.D. A new discovery that questions a previous theory.【答案】(1)A(2)B(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文为一篇说明文,一些新的证据验证了先前人们的猜测理论:即海洋中的动物是因为潮汐的作用导致鱼类发展出四肢,迁徙到陆地的。
教师辅导讲义Step4:实战演练Passage 1It used to be taboo for movie stars to do advertising for products in the United States. We never used to see our favorite movie star in commercials for Frosted Flakes -Catherine Zeta Jones recently broke this unspoken rule by appearing in a series of T-Mobile advertisements. While it is anyone's right on how they want to make money, I can understand why movie stars try to avoid getting involved in advertising for products or services. Charity advertising is one thing. However, advertising products for Madison Avenue might not be a good idea for movie stars. It can be difficult to play a serious police-officer role in your newest movie when you are known as the peanut butter guy from television. In short, movie stars and advertising just do not mix.Occasionally, a celebrity's (名人) success with selling products does depend on the product. George Foreman is now just as well known for his grills as he is as a boxer. I guess the question is: did the grill make Foreman successful or did Foreman make the grill successful? George Foreman was a boxer professionally but he had done a series of advertising for other products before the grill. Perhaps George was so likeable that the combination of a likeable celebrity and a product everyone wants is like gold. This seems the most logical explanation for Foreman's success.Public image is important in advertising. But there is an important question: are we buying the product, or the celebrity? There is a simple answer. Regardless of the celebrities, substandard products only survive for a short time. Failed television shows are a good example of this theory. Jeff Foxworthy is one of the most successful comedians in history, and he is a well liked celebrity. However, his television sitcom The Jeff Foxworthy Show failed terribly. Foxworthy was not negatively affected by the failure of his sitcom because he went on to start the very successful variety show Blue Collar TV.1.Why do movie stars try to avoid getting involved in advertising?A.Because they have their own style of making money.B.Because advertising may spoil their screen image.C.Because they would rather advertise for charities.D.Because there are too many advertising opportunities.2.George's success is an example to show ___________ .A.that a celebrity does not at all help product salesB.that product advertisements can benefit a celebrityC.how a celebrity manages to succeed after failuresD.that a celebrity advertises best for a well-liked product3.It is implied in the last paragraph that___________ .A.Foxworthy was a failure as a comedianB.one can succeed where he or she once failedC.when people buy products they buy celebrities as wellD.celebrities might not help products of poor quality4.The best title for the passage is __________ .A. Why Celebrities AdvertiseB. Success of Product SalesC. Public Image and AdvertisingD. Advertising: Celebrities' ChoicePassage 2With an increasing number of lives being taken each year, there is a call to control the gun, to restrict its use and the ease with which it may be purchased in many parts of the country, or to be rid of it altogether. However there are also many。

落堕市安心阳光实验学校2014高考英语阅读理解训练题(4)附答案I don't ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it's like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes. At 19, when I began studying astrophysics(天体物理学), it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as 3 post-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed through the lens of gender (性别) politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight fiercely on my behalf and all womankind. Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don't talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn't want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don't study sociology or political theory.Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women's college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the 45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer: 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don't dismiss those concerns. Still, I don't tell them "war" stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that's a sight worth talking about.9. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute(归因于) the author's failures to_____.A. the very fact that she is a womanB. her involvement in gender politicsC. her over-confidence as a female astrophysicistD. the burden she bears in a male-dominated society10. What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research?A. Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.B. Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.C. People's stereotyped attitude towards female scientists.D. Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurture11. Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about herclass?A. Female students no longer have to worry about gender issues.B. Her students' performance has brought back her confidence.C. Her female students can do just as well as male students.D. More female students are pursuing science than before.12. What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A. Women students needn't have the concerns of her generation.B. Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.C. Women can balance a career in science and having a family.D. Women now have fewer discrimination problems about science career.(C篇)ACDC********************************************************结束社会生活类---[2012·上海卷](C)Researchers in the psychology department at the University ofCalifornia at Los Angeles (UCLA) have discovered a major difference inthe way men and women respond to stress. This difference may explain whymen are more likely to suffer from stressrelated disorders.Until now, psychological research has maintained that both menand women have the same “fightorflight” reaction to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive behavior, such as verbal or physical conflict (“fight”), or they react by withdrawing from the stressful situation (“flight”). However, the UCLA research team found that men and women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often react to stress in thefightorflight response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called “tend and befriend.” That is, they often react to stressful conditions by protecting and nurturing their young (“tend”), and by looking for social contact and support from others—especially other females (“befriend”).Scientists have long known that in the fightorflight reaction to stress, an important role is played by certain hormones(激素) released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the female tendorbefriend response is also based on a hormone. This hormone, called oxytocin, has been studied in the context of childbirth, but now it is being studied for its role in the response of both men and women to stress. The principal investigator, Dr. Shelley E. Taylor, explained that “animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and less anxious.” While men also secrete (分泌) oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones. In terms of everyday behavior, the UCLA study found that women are far more likely than men to seek social contact when they are feeling stressed. They may phone relatives or friends, or ask directions if they are lost. The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came home to their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to enjoy some peace and quiet. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant focusing her attention on her children and their needs. The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower frequency of stressrelated disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The tendandbefriend regulatory (调节的) system may protect women against stress, and this may explain why women on average live longer than men.72. The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to ________.A. turn to friends for helpB. solve a conflict calmlyC. find an escape from realityD. seek comfort from children73. Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage?A. Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do.B. Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.C. Both animals and people have high levels of oxytocin.D. Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men.74. What can be learned from the passage?A. Male hormones help build up the body's resistance to stress.B. In a family a mother cares more about children than a father does.C. Biological differences lead to different behavioral responses to stress.D. The UCLA study was designed to confirm previous research findings.75. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A. How men and women get over stressB. How men and women suffer from stressC. How researchers overcome stress problemsD. How researchers h andle stressrelated disorders【要点综述】本文主要介绍男女对压力反应的区别和原因以及如何克服压力。

关于田径英文作文_高三万能英语作文4篇高分英语作文1:AthleticsLiu Xiang (born in Putuo, Shanghai, China in July) is a Chinese rice hurdler. Liu Xiang is an Olympic gold medal winner and world champion. His Olympic gold medal is the first gold medal in China's men's track and field event. His previous best performance was the Republic of China won by Olympic silver medalist Li Yang and Olympic bronze medalist Zhu Jianhua, contrary to people's opinion, Liu Xiang's Olympic track and field gold medal is not the first time Asian men's athletes have won the gold medal, because the Olympic gold medal winners such as Xiaotian Dongyan, Tian Shimao Zhiren and son Beijing are the pioneers of Asian male track and field athletes to win gold in the Olympic Games. Liu Xiang is one of China's most succesul commercial athletes and has become a cultural idol. He is the first Chinese athlete to achieve the "Triple Crown" in track and field: the world record holder, the world champion and the Olympic champion. He will win another gold medal in the meter hurdles at the Beijing Olympic Games, which is "China's great hope", but he had to do so, after a wrong start and an undisclosed injury deterioration, he withdrew at the last minute.
The Rise of Solo TravelIn recent years, there has been a significant rise in the number of people who choose to travel alone. This trend is known as solo travel, and it"s becoming increasingly popular among all age groups. One of the reasons for the rise in solo travel is the desire for independence. Many solo travelers want to explore the world on their own terms and experience new cultures without being tied down by the preferences or schedules of others. Additionally, solo travel allows individuals to challenge themselves and step outside of their comfort zones.Another factor contributing to the increase in solo travel is the accessibility of technology. With the rise of social media and travel apps, it"s easier than ever to plan and navigate a trip on your own. Furthermore, the internet provides a wealth of information on destinations, accommodations, and activities, making it easier to make informed decisions when traveling alone.Despite the many benefits of solo travel, there are also some potential risks to consider. Safety can be a concern, particularly for female solo travelers, and it"s important to take precautions such as staying in well-lit areas and avoiding walking alone at night. Additionally, traveling alone can be more expensive, as single supplements may apply to accommodations and activities.Overall, solo travel is a growing trend that offers many rewards for those who choose to embark on it. By embracing independence and stepping out of their comfort zones, solo travelers can gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.拓展:Solo travel不仅是一种旅行方式,更是一种生活态度。

第I卷 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A One day, when I was going to check in at an airport, I noticed there was a big problem. The counter person was telling everyone that all the planes were having problems and they would not be able to fly! And it was suggested that a bus would be provided to take us to Seattle. Everyone was worried, as we only had an hour and a half to make the connecting flight, and the bus was not even at the airport yet. Finally, the bus pulled up, and the driver said, “They just pulled me out of bed after an all-night shift (夜班), and they expect me to get you to Seattle in time to catch your flight. Good Luck!” Needless to say, everyone was in a really bad mood. I was loading my luggage into the bus and had taken my guitar over my back when the driver said, “What? Are you going to play that in my bus?” “Well, really did not plan on it,” I replied. “I was only kidding,” said the driver. But I started thinking about it, and I pulled out the guitar. A worried, angry woman said, “Well, what if I don’t like it?” “Then tell me and I will stop,” I replied. We drove off, and the tension made the atmosphere in the bus horrendous! Then I started playing the old song Blue Skies. In a few minutes, I noticed everyone was humming along. I started to sing, too, and before long, the whole bus burst into song. One song led to another, and everyone seemed to have a request. “Do you know You Are My Sunshine?” Everyone laughed and sang, with food passed around the bus, and before long, the airport was in sight. The bus driver called, “We made it! We never would have done it without the help of our guitar player.” Shouts of approval rang through the bus. People exchanged addresses and invitations to visit, and a few exchanged hugs. The driver said to me, “This is the best ride I ever had. Thanks for your music.” A few weeks later, my mailbox was filled with letters from my new friends. Their letters reminded me of how, by reaching out with just a song or a bit of friendship, you can turn a very tense situation into a peaceful experience — a magical, musical bus ride. 1. What can we learn about the driver from his words in Paragraph 2?
A. He was late because he just returned from an all-night shift. B. He was unwilling to take those people to the airport. C. He thought it was possible to get those people to the airport in time. D. He thought he was lucky to take those people to the airport. 2. When the author decided to play his guitar, ______. A. not all the passengers preferred that idea B. all the passengers disliked that idea C. the driver fully supported him D. the whole bus burst into song 3. The underlined word “horrendous” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by “ ______”. A. terrible B. cheerful C. strange D. changeable 4. What does this text mainly tell us? A. An unforgettable flight to Seattle. B. The amazing friendship on a bus. C. A great guitar player. D. A wonderful musical bus ride. B A good night’s sleep may help your brain file away (存档) lessons learned during the day. But, according to a new study, the brain begins processing and storing those memories long before it is time for bed and continues to do so even while you are thinking about and doing other things. Recent studies have shown that the parts of the brain that we use to learn a task become active again during sleep. This activity, scientists suggest, could be the brain transferring memories from short-term to long-term storage. But the brain doesn’t necessarily wait until the lights are out to begin processing those memories. To find out how the brain handles memories during waking hours, scientists gave 15 volunteers two tasks, each requiring different parts of the brain to learn. In one task, the volunteers learned how to drive in a virtual (虚拟的) town and then searched the town for an object. In the second task, they learned to predict where a series of dots would appear on a screen. Using a special machine, the researchers scanned the volunteers’ brains right before and right after the tasks. The compared the two images to see whether the regions of the brain involved in learning the task were still active even after the task was completed. After a break, the scientists took a third image of each volunteer’s brain. They wanted to determine whether these regions in the brain continued to be active after more time had passed and they discovered that, for at least an hour after learning the task, the brain stays active. It appears to continue processing the new information. Furthermore, the images showed that distracting the volunteers doesn’t affect their ability to store
