If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise----and as a result, we are getting old unnecessarily soon.

Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of aging should be slowed down.

With a team of colleagues at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations.

Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect and emotion, and determine the human character. The rear section of brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional faculties.

Contraction of front and side parts as cells die off was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty and seventy-year-olds. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants.

Matsuzawa’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says,“ Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators.”

66. The team of doctors wanted to find out _ __.

A. why certain people age sooner than others

B. how to make people live longer

C. the sizes of certain people’s brains

D. which people are most intelligent

67. On what are their research finding based?

A. A survey of farmers in northern Japan.

B. Tests performed on a thousand old people.

C. The study of brain volumes of different people.

D. The latest development of computer technology.

68. The doctor’s test shows that _ ___.

A. our brains shrink as we grow old

B. the front section of the brain does not shrink

C. sixty-year-olds have better brains than thirty-year olds

D. brain contraction may vary among people of the same age

69. The underlined word “subjects” in Paragraph 5 means ___ .

A. something to be considered

B. branches of knowledge studied

C. persons chosen to be studied in an experiment

D. any member of a state except the supreme ruler

(B)

Are healthy people happier than seriously ill ones? Not necessarily. In a study described in The Journal of experimental Psychology, a group of people with end-stage kidney(肾)failure were provided with electronic devices that required them to record their moods at various times throughout the day. For comparison, a group of healthy volunteers used the same devices. When researchers had studied the results, they found that the levels of happiness were about the same for the two groups.

The researchers, led by Dr. Jason Riis of Princeton when he was a graduate student at the University of Michigan, also found that the healthy people greatly overestimated how unhappy the sick ones would be. And the sick people overestimated how happy healthy ones would be.

For the study, 49 kidney disease patients who were undergoing dialysis(透析)sections three times a week were given personal digital assistants, as 49 healthy volunteers were matched to the patients by age, race, education and sex. When the devices beeped, the subjects were asked to rate their mood on a 5-point scale, with 2 de fined as “very pleasant” and minus 2 defined as “very unpleasant”. On average, the kidney patients rated their mood as 0.70, while the healthy subjects rated it as 0.83. The participants were also asked to describe other emotions they might be feeling, including joy and anxiety, and to describe their levels of physical comfort. And sometimes they were asked, “How do you feel about your life as a whole?”

A better understanding of how well people are able to adapt to poor health, the researchers said, could help doctors and patients make wiser choices about their medical care. Earlier studies have also found that seriously ill patients described themselves as being happy. But these patients were not given a chance to answer questions about their mood privately and repeatedly over a period of time, Dr. Riis said, and so it was unclear how accurate their responses were.

70. It can be learnt from the study that ______.

A. the electronic devices used are digital assistants for dialysis

B. all the subjects are of the same age, race, sex and education

C. the levels of happiness are little affected by health conditions

D. both patients and healthy people overestimate their own happiness

71. In the research, the subjects’ ratings of their mood levels were ______ on average.

A. vague

B. positive

C. negative

D. neutral

72. One of Dr. Riis’ concerns about the result of the research was whether ______.

A. it revealed the patients’ privacy

B. it reflected what the patients really thought

C. the questions for the patients were repeated

D. the assignment for all subjects was accurate

73. The purpose of the research was ______.

A. to help patients adapt to poor health

B. to learn patients’ average level of happiness

C. to define the extent to which health condition affects happiness

D. to find the distinction between the healthy and unhealthy people

(C)

Many people think the search for cleaner energy leads only to renewable resources like sun, wind and water. But it also leads to a fossil fuel. Natural gas is considered the cleanest of the fossil fuels, the fuels created by plant and animal remains over millions of years.

Burning it releases fewer pollutants than oil or coal. The gas is mainly methane(甲烷). It produces half the carbon dioxide of other fossil fuels. So it may help cut the production of carbon gases linked to climate change.

Russia is first in what are called "proved reserves" of natural gas. The United States is sixth. Over the years, big oil and gas companies recovered much of the easily reached supplies of gas in America. They drilled straight down into formations where gas collects. As these supplies were used up, big drillers looked for similar formations in other countries.

But now the industry is taking a new look. Companies are developing gas supplies trapped in shale rock two to three thousand meters underground. They drill down to the shale(页岩), then go sideways and inject high-pressure water, sand or other material into the rock. This causes the rock to break, or fracture, releasing the gas. Huge fields of gas shale are believed to lie under the Appalachian Mountains, Michigan and the south-central states.

Gas shale exploration is being done mainly by small to medium sized companies. Eric Potter is a program director in the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin.

ERIC POTTER: "The types of opportunities that are left for natural gas exploration in the U.S. have changed. So it's a different class of resource -- not as easy to develop, and not even recognized as something worth pursuing, say, twenty years ago."

He says more than half the gas in the United States is now coming from these new reserves.

But hydraulic fracturing can also produce debate and anger over the risk of groundwater pollution. This method of drilling is not federally supervised under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Some in Congress want to end that exemption (免除)from the law.

Natural gas provides Americans with about one-fourth of their energy. And, unlike oil, most of it is produced in America. Gas producers invested heavily in reaching new supplies when prices were high. But prices are down sharply now because the recession(经济衰退)cut demand for energy. So energy expert Eric Potter says it is too early to know how the new gas shale reserves will affect the market.

74. Which of the following statements is TRUE about fossil fuels?

A. Fossil fuels are a kind of renewable resource just like sun, wind and water.

B. Burning natural gas releases more pollutants than oil or coal.

C. Fossil fuels were created millions of years ago by plant and animal remains.

D. Using fossil fuels may help change the climate.

75. What does the writer mean by saying “now the industry is taking a new look”?

A. The U.S. will be ranked first in natural gas because it has huge fields of gas shale.

B. People gain natural gas from shale rock using a method different from the traditional ones.

C. Gas shale exploration will bring human beings abundant supply of natural gas.

D. There should be no concern over the energy shortage because the industry is developing.

76. When did gas producers invest heavily in finding new supplies of natural gas?

A. When people’s demand for energy increased.

B. When natural gas provided Americans with about one-fourth their energy.

C. When Americans began to look for cleaner energy

D. When the economy was in recession.

77. Which one is TRUE about gas shale exploration?

A. It is against the Safe Drinking Water Act.

B. It was considered not worth doing twenty years ago.

C. It will release pollutants to the water.

D. It will bring down the price of natural gas.

Section C

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

Frogs, toads and salamanders usually make us think of green, slimy little monsters. These monsters actually belong to a very special class of animals called the amphibians. Amphibians can live both on land and in the water. They commonly inhabit ponds, rivers, marshes and other wetlands.

Today, amphibians are becoming extinct very quickly from all the six continents where they are found. More than 25 countries are reporting sharp drops in the populations of amphibians. In some places, embryos (胚胎) are dying; in others, adults are missing. Why are they dying off?

Scientists blame human interference. Industrial waste and toxic gases given out by factories, manufacturing plants and cars are steadily poisoning the breeding grounds of amphibians. Chemicals such as sulphur dioxide rise high into the atmosphere and mix with rain. This makes the rain acidic and thus kills off delicate amphibian embryos.

More rare species of amphibians are already gone. Costa Rica’s Golden toads have not been seen since 1989. The Australian Gastric Brooding frogs are extinct. Leopard frog numbers are dropping in the Rocky Mountains. Leopard frogs live in the wetland regions in these areas. The wetlands are being drained to make way for highways, industry and new housing.

Another threat to the amphibians is the increased ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet rays come from the sun and are extremely harmful to living things. They can cause skin cancer in humans. Luckily for us, ultraviolet rays are blocked by a thick layer of ozone above the earth’s atmosphere. Ozone is a special kind of oxygen which absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Now, the ozone layer is being destroyed by chemicals called CFC’s which are given off by factories. A hole in the ozone layer was discovered over An tarctica in the late 193’s. As a result, more ultraviolet rays are reaching the earth and more amphibians are dying.

Just as the emergence of new infectious diseases such as Bird Flu are a threat to human and animal populations across the world, amphibian species are also facing their most significant threat from a little understood disease. A chytrid fungus is understood to be of the major causes of frog death across the world.

(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS) 78. __________________indicate that amphibians are dying out quickly.

79. What’s the destructive force of acid rain? __________________________.

每一个同学都要精打细算。合现、充分地利用现有的时间,不让一分光阴虚度,当我们高考结束后,回首这一百天时,一定不要因虚度岁月而悔恨。相反,我希望,每个同学得到高考成绩时,都会自豪地说:人生能有几回搏?我竭尽全力了,十八岁,我没留下遗憾! 决战的号角声已经吹响,同学们:爱拼才会赢!我相信,只要我们竭尽全力,奋力拼搏,140班一定能取得胜利。在今后的日子里,我们每个同学都要放下包袱,轻装上阵,安下心来,发扬奋力拼搏、用永不言败的精神,不犹豫、不彷徨,我们共同努力,全身心地奋战高考,向家长、老师、学校和社会交出一份满意的答卷,铸无悔青春,创140班的神话! 相信你们一定能够成为我们的骄傲,成为家长的骄傲,成为澜沧一中的骄傲! (男、女) (男)一百天,我们唱出心中无悔 (女)一百天,我们笑吟多年等待 (男)一百天,我们跳出平庸的牢笼 (女)一百天,我们让命运的裙角飞扬 (男)我们珍惜一百天,让腾飞的梦想在六月里张开翅膀 (女)我们奋斗一百天,让激扬的心声在六月里尽情回荡 (男)我们拼搏一百天,让十二年的付出在六月里绽放金色光芒! (男、女)高考百日宣誓活动现在开始! 二、奏乐国歌(音乐——国歌) (男)请家长和老师坐下,全体同学立正,接受班主任的宣誓。 三、班主任向学生宣誓 (要求:班主任面向学生举起右拳做出宣誓) 现在,我——班主任付开慧向高140的全体同学作出郑重宣誓: 未来的一百天中我一定会: 忠于职守,以身作则;
