Passage 1

Samuel was back at the thrift shop. He had walked into the shop with only one goal in mind — to find a book that he had NOT bought yesterday. The book was one of the seven that he had piled up yesterday. He was going to buy all of them. But at the last moment, he changed his mind. He put all seven back on the shelf.

Samuel had a personal library at home that exceeded 1,000 books — almost all unread. He subscribed to seven magazines and one daily newspaper. Samuel had more reading material in his small apartment than he could finish in two lifetimes, yet his urge to buy more books raged on.

He finally put his foot down. Not one more book, he told himself, unless it was really special. Yesterday’s book fit the bill. It was a biography of one of his favorite authors— Stephen King. King is one of America’s most popular fiction authors. But it wasn’t easy for King; early in his career, he got hundreds of rejection slips. Samuel wanted to be a great writer. King was his role model.

Samuel immediately found one of the books he had piled up yesterday, and then another one. All right, he thought. This was going to be easy. In minutes, he found all the books that he had held in his hands yesterday, except one —the Stephen King book. Gee, what a surprise, he thought. The one book that I want to find is the one book that I can’t find.

Samuel took a walk throughout the store, knowing that people often pick up merchandise in one place and then leave it in another place. The book was a thick paperback with a red cover. But it was nowhere to be found.

So for Samuel, the Big Hunt was on. He was now a man on a mission. Every thrift shop he went to would involve a search for the King book. This new search added purpose to his thrift shop life.

Samuel had held something special in his hands. But only when he let it go did he realize its value. When he found it again, he would place the King book prominently on his bookshelf. It would almost certainly be his favorite book that he never got around to reading.

1. Who was back at the thrift shop?

2. How many goals did he have in mind?

3. What was he going to do with the seven books yesterday?

4. What did he do at the last moment?

5. How many lifetimes would it take him to read everything in his apartment?

Passage 2

Of the thousands of different kinds of animals that exist in the world man has learned to make friends with an enormous number. Some are pets, and offer him companionship; some give protection, and some do hard work which man cannot do for himself. Dogs, which serve man in all three capacities, are found in various breeds in all countries of the world. The Husky can live in the cold polar regions, and the Saluki is at home in the hottest parts of Central Africa. The inhabitants of certain countries are dependent for their very lives on the camel. In the West Indies the little donkey, strong and sure-footed, carrying heavy loads even in mountainous places, is a familiar sight.

Trained and tamed for many generations, domestic animals are not accustomed to roaming(到处走动) in search of food and shelter. They look to their masters to provide for their needs, and as long as these are supplied, they are content to do what their masters require.

All domestic animals need proper food. It must be suitable for them, sufficient in quantity, fresh and clean. Some people feed a pet dog or cat on odds and ends of table scraps, and then wonder why the animal seems listless(倦怠的) and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeeding is as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health.

Even well cared for animals may sometimes fall ill. If this happens, the wise master seeks the best advice he can get. All sorts of medicines and treatments are available for sick animals, and in some countries organizations exist to provide them free or at a cheap price. Useful, friendly, hardworking animals deserve to have some time, money and attention spent on their health.

6. What does the author want to convey in the first paragraph?

7. Why are those domestic animals not used to searching for food and shelter by themselves?

8. According to the third paragraph, how can we keep domestic animals healthy?

9. What will a wise master do if the animals fall sick?

10. What is the main idea of this whole passage?

Section B (1%×5 = 5%)

Passage 3

THE music industry is never short of teen pop stars with wonderful looks, but it doesn’t often find one like US singer Taylor Swift. The 20-year-old’s pop stardom and songwr iting skills go hand in hand.

“Beneath Taylor Swift’s not-a-girl, not-yet-a-woman sweetness lurks (隐藏) a very skilful songwriting technique (技巧),” writes Leah Greenblatt with Entertainment Weekly.

Songwriting, the country singer explains, is “how I deal with problems. It’s how I cope with (处理) issues —it’s how I’ve always coped with issues. I tend to write about things that really

impact (影响) me most.”

So in her songs, there is always something true and honest. They seem like stories from a diary. And that certainly helps Swift appeal to (吸引) her audience.

She’s sold more than 13 million copies worldwide of her first two albums, 2006’s self-titled debut (首张专辑) and 2008’s Fearless. Swift has had 11 hits and won four Grammy Awards. She’s the youngest artis t ever to be named Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards. Swift even ranked the 12th most powerful celebrity in Forbes magazine last month.

Not surprisingly, there were great expectations for her third album, Speak Now, released late last month, where she again returned to her own life for material.

The 14 songs, “are all about the last two years... when life was a little bit bigger and crazier,” says Swift. “So I’ve written about the lessons and confusion and heartbreak and all the different thi ngs that go along with being 18, 19 and 20.”

The song Innocent addresses the 2009 Video Music Awards ceremony (仪式) when US rapper Kanye West rudely cut into her acceptance speech. But Swift’s Innocent is forgiving of West, painting him as “32, and still growing up now”.

“Who you are is not what you did,” she sings.

Back to December is reportedly an apology to her ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner.

“The person I wrote this song about really deserved (应得) an apology. I’ve never apologized to anybody before in music. It felt really good to write those lyrics,” Swift said.

11. The music industry is never short of _____________________.

12. Songwriting, the country singer explains, is __________________.

13. So in her songs, there is always something ______________________.

14. ______________________ helps Swift appeal to her audience.

A. how she deal with problems

B. true and honest

C. teen pop stars with wonderful looks

D. the 12th most powerful celebrity in Forbes magazine last month

E. all about the last two years

F. something like stories from a diary

Like most ailments it has its own cause, symptoms, and cure. Culture shock is precipitated by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse. These signs or cues include the thousand and one ways in which we orient ourselves to the situations of daily life: when to shake hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to give orders to servants, how to make purchases, when to accept and when to refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These cues which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, customs, or norms are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend for our peace of mind and our efficiency on hundreds of these cues. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar cues are removed.
