“Miss James, look! Look what I found!” Kylie held up a book nearly half her size. On the cover there was reprint of a famous painting, a landscape (山水画) that featured a shadowed Cyprus tree and an expanse of stars represented by intense of brushstrokes and vivid colors.
Kylie’s excitement reminded Miss James of a time not long ago when she, too, had felt this kind of exhilaration upon coming across a painting not unlike this one.
“It’s a Van Gogh,” Penelope had remarked, her breath seeming to escape her as she spoke. The two friends stood silently in front of the gilded (镀金的) framed canvas before them, admiring the thick lines of paint that cure and bent of from towering mountains, and a simple cottage. They moved closer to glimpse every detail of the artwork, the passion and urgency of the painter seeming to spring forward from the image, projecting itself onto the observers before it. There became a quiet understanding between the two that this work had been created by a man tortured (被迫害的), a man who never gave up his desire to paint even though he was starving and unappreciated. How could he have known how well he would be accepted by those who would come after him? It was shocking beauty and tragedy in one. Streams of tears had run down both their faces.
Kylie had presented the book to Miss James with a similar respect. She stood
next to her teacher as she opened the cover, page after page displaying a variety of art—a field of irises, a pot of sunflowers, a sailing ship along the seashore. Miss James could only think how much she wished she could show Kylie something more than a print. If she could only bring her into her memories. Even still, the child had been fascinated by what she saw before her, and she stared at each painting that passed by.
“Can we share this with the class, Miss James?” Kylie asked, wide-eyed.
“I think that’s a fantastic idea!” Miss James answered, closing the book and handing it back to her delighted students.

In the United States, school buses are operated by special school bus companies and monitored by both the educational department of the government
and parent committee. Besides, there are more than 300 laws and standards beneficial to school buses from the Federation to states. There are detailed rules for making a school bus from the materials of the bus to the thickness of the body. In fact, school buses are 40 times safer than other vehicles.
The United States government gives a lot of priority (优先权) to the school buses and their companies. First of all, they have special right on the roads: to ensure the safety of the students, it’s against the law to go past a school bus when it’s moving; the right of the school buses on the roads is higher than the ones of the fire trucks and ambulances; in dangerous circumstances, school buses have the priority to be rescued. Second, yellow is a standardized school bus color; school bus drivers and the caretakers on the school buses are treated as government staff.
School buses in the United States are considered as the most important vehicles. When a school bus needs to stop, the driver would swing out a stop signal arm from the side of the bus to warn other vehicles in progress of a stop. The vehicles behind the school bus would stop as if it is the red-light signal. After the students get on or get off the bus, the driver would swing back the signal arm and start off again. Then the vehicles behind it would start to move, following the bus. Any vehicle that goes past the school bus would be given a fine and sometimes would get its driver’s license stopped for a period of time.
Any attack on the school bus would be accused of going against the federation, and would be sentenced to prison for 20 years to life. Under so many protections, school buses are the safest vehicles in the United States.
25.According to the passage, school buses in the United States __________.
A. are so strongly-built as to move very slowly

D. should be the first to be rescued in dangerous situations

that __________.
A. under no circumstances should you run ahead of a moving school bus
B. you need to stop when you see a school bus running on the street
C. there is no need to follow the school bus if you are in a hurry
D. under so many protections school buses can run at top speed as they please
27. From the passage we learn that __________.
A. other drivers envy the school bus drivers
B. the school bus drivers enjoy high social status
C. The government cares more about school kids than parents
D. when the signal arm turns red, the following cars must stop
28. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Yellow is the symbolic color of school buses in the USA.
B. There are strict requirements about the production of school buses in the USA.
C. Any attack on the school bus is thought of as a very serious crime in the USA.
D. If you go past a school bus in the USA, you will be put into prison.

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mum, you must come and see the daffodils (水仙花) before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Lake Arrowhead. “I will go next Tuesday,” I promised, a little unwillingly, on her third call.
The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, "Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible (看不见的) in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!"
My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”
After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read “Daffodil Garden”. We got out of the car and each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, as we turned a corner of the path, I looked up and gasped (倒抽气). Before me lay the most beautiful sight. There were five acres of flowers!
“But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It's just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That's her home,” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio (庭院), we saw a poster.” Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking" was the headline.
The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs(鳞茎),” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”
There it was, The Daffodil Principle. For me, that moment was a life-changing experience.
I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun, one bulb at a time, to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top. Just planting one bulb at a time, year after year, had changed the world. 29.
The author didn’t go to see the daffodils at first because ____
_____.
A. the weather was not good enough
B. they were growing on the mountain top
C. it was not easy for her to drive there
D. she was not interested in them.
30.What do we know about the woman living in the A-frame house?
A. She must be out of mind.
B. She acted as a gardener there.
C. It took her great determination to grow the daffodils.
D. She was poor and made her living by selling daffodils.
31. What could the author probably learn from the experience?
A. It’s never too late to learn.
B. Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it.
C. We can change the world by growing flowers.
D. We must put the interests of others above our own.
32. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. An Unforgettable Experience
B. One Bulb at a Time
C. Beautiful Daffodils
D. I Love Daffodils

Did you know that a bowl of rice could save your iPod if you drop it in a swimming pool by accident or you could get rid of some accidents in life? Now let’s take a look at some of the following useful tips.

If your battery goes dead but you need to get a number or send one last text, try warming it up. That may give you a tiny bit of power: take the battery from the phone and rub(摩擦) it between your hands. Or warm it under your arm for a few minutes. Then try to start the phone, but use it quickly.
♦ What to do if your gadget (小装置) gets wet
First, try drying it out with a vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器). If a vacuum cleaner isn’t at hand, fill a pot or bowl with uncooke d rice and put your wet gadget inside. The dry, uncooked rice should drink all the water and after a few hours, you should be able to use the gadget. Don’t forget to remove the battery and SIM card before drying it.
♦ How to get rid of something sticky on your computer
Use a little water on a cotton bud to remove stickiness from the keyboard. Never use strong cleaners on your screen as this can damage it. Instead, mix a little vinegar with water (50/50) and put it on a piece of cloth to clean your

One day, I was buying some early potatoes from Mr. Miller when I noticed a small poor boy hungrily staring at a basket of green peas. 36 Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over and told me there were two other boys like him and that her husband often bargained with them for peas, tomatoes, or whatever although he didn’t really need any marbles. I left the stand, smiling to myself, impressed by this man.
Some time later, I moved away. One day I visited some old friends, learning that Mr. Miller had died. 37 Ahead of us in line were three young men in dark suits. They came over to Mrs. Miller, hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on, wiping their eyes.
38 I told Mrs. Miller who I was and mentioned the story she had told me years ago. She said, “Those three young men who just left were just the boys I told you about. They told me how they appreciated the things Jim ‘traded’ w ith them. Now, they came to pay their debt.”
“We’ve never had a great deal of wealth,” she added, “but right now, Jim
would consider himself to be the richest man.” 39 Resting underneath were three shiny, red marbles.
At that time I realized that one would not be remembered by one’s words, but by one’s kind deeds. 40
A. Our turn came.
B. It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate him, a day to love him, but an entire life to forget him.
C. Mrs Miller was also a kind-hearted woman.
D. To my surprise, Mr. Miller sold the boy a bag of peas—just for a marble (弹珠).
E. Then with loving gentleness, she lifted the lifeless fingers of Miller.
F. I agreed to accompany them to the funeral to offer words of comfort.
G. Mr Miller is just this kind of person whom one would never forget.
