月季刚长出来的嫩叶如同一弯细微的月牙儿。水灵灵的小叶片透着嫩红，浅浅的红晕向叶片的四面渗开去。一株月季上均匀地长着三至五片嫩叶，就像一幅水墨画，显得那样毫不矫饰，那样素净淡雅。经过一二个星期后，嫩叶长大了。由月芽儿变成卵形，由卵形变成了像手掌一样大的老叶片，这时候它的颜色也由淡红、浅红变成了紫红和绿色了，并且茎叶间不断长出新的嫩叶来。一簇簇一丛丛团聚在一起，撑开了绿色的生命之伞。
月季花的茎刚长出来的时候，细嫩而柔软。等过一段时间，茎开始粗壮了，细细看去，就可以看到每株茎杆上长着一些刺，随着月季的生长，这些小刺由嫩红变成浅绿、深绿、灰褐色，刺便越来越硬，不小心扎在手上还真感到疼痛呢！
