Two years ago, my son sat me down for a talk. "Mom，it's time," he said. "Hear me out： It's time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone."
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to John's opinion about our home technology. When you think of the Himalayas, you may picture tall, rocky, snow-covered tops. But did you know that researchers have recently discovered plant life expanding in this region?
The region is the zone between the treeline and the snowline. It is 5 to 15 times as large as the areas of glaciers （冰川）and permanent snow, which means studying it is important to understand the Himalayas as a whole.
The treeline is the edge of an ecosystem where trees are able to grow, and beyond the treeline environmental conditions become too hard to allow tree growth, Meanwhile snowlines are the boundaries on mountains that separate areas with permanent snow from areas with seasonal or no snow.
Researchers used satellite data from 1993 to 2018 to measure plant cover between 4,150 meters and 6,000 meters above sea level. The scientists discovered that the greatest increase in plant cover was between an altitude of 5,000 meters and 5,500 meters. Plants in this region mostly include small shrubs and grasses.
Even areas once completely covered by glaciers now hold rocks covered with mosses, lichen, and sometimes even flowers. In. addition, the snowline seems to be going up, while the treeline is expanding. This shows that the region is becoming warmer, causing more melting（融化）of snow and allowing plants to move up.
In the past 40 years, 25% of all Himalayan ice has been lost due to global warming. Himalayan glaciers are reducing by about 0.5 meters each year. The rate of glacier melting has doubled in this decade. The melting of glaciers increases water in the region, making it wetter. Receding snow also forces the snowline to move up, providing a greater amount of area for the warm and wet conditions, which are perfect for plant growth.
As of now, we do not know whether plants will accelerate or slow down the rate of glacier melting.

Today's astronauts can enjoy a variety of freeze- dried meals, snacks, and desserts that can be commonly found on Earth. However, delicious as the cuisine is, it can't match a freshly- cooked meal. Luckily, astronauts at the International Space Station(ISS) may soon be able to enjoy freshly-baked cookies, thanks to a newly-acquired space oven.
The Zero-G oven built by NanoRacks is specially designed to adapt to the space station's microgravity environment, Mary Murphy, a NanoRacks payload manager who helped develop the space oven, says the biggest challenge was keeping the cookie dough（面团）from floating inside the oven. "Here on Earth, it's pretty easy： You grab cookie dough, and you put it on a tray（托盘），and you slide it into the oven," she says. "Our concern is, if you push the cookie in the center of the oven? where will it go? Is it going to stay there in the center? Is it going to slide off to the side somewhere?"
To overcome the challenge, the inventors decided to keep a piece of cookie dough inside a sealed tray that can be placed directly into the oven. Once the cookies are baked, the plate is transported to be cooled, which can only be accessed once the treats are at room temperature. While this helps protect astronauts from oven burns, it also means there will be no fresh baking smells spreading through the ISS!
Murphy says, "What's so interesting about this is that it will be the first time anything will be baked in space. What will the cookies look like? Will they be baked out equally in all directions? Will they stay round or stay flat? While we don't know for sure how the experiment will turn out, we are looking forward to finding out and learning how to best bake food products in space.”
While the cookies' appearance will be seen soon, their taste will remain a mystery for some time. That's because the freshly-baked space treats will not be eaten by the astronauts, but instead, will be returned to Earth to be tested to ensure they are safe to consume.

Passage One If leadership, basically speaking, consists of getting things done through others, then persuasion is one of the leader’s essential tools.
