US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin (普通话) class, he quickly changed his mind.

“I thought Mandarin would be more beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language.

He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends.

While it’s a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career.

I’d always wondered what the point of traveling was. If we’re only going to end up back in our daily routine anyway, aren’t we just cheating ourselves?

Sept 27 is World Tourism Day. It also happens to be exactly three months from the day my three friends and I left for a one-week trip to Moalboal, Philippines, to learn scuba diving (水肺潜水).

It wasn’t the typical relaxing vacation that most people would have taken. We spent our first morning sitting in a room watching tutorial (教学的) videos, while the rest of the days we would practice what we’d learned from the video with our instru ctor, first in the pool and then in the sea. Every day, we had to dress ourselves up in a tight diving suit and a jacket with a heavy steel tank on the back.

But somehow, the experience changed us.

For starters, it allowed us to get to know ourselves better. When we had to fully concentrate on our breathing underwater – even a little bit of difference in the amount of air we breathed in or out could have changed our buoyancy (浮力) –we started to realize how we’d been taking it for granted and had never truly “felt” ourselves breathe.

And its influence continues.

During the three months that we’ve been back from the trip, we’ve visited two diving expositions (展览会) –some thing we wouldn’t have been interested in before –where we learned about freediving, which is diving holding your breath, without an extra supply of air. We were fascinated and signed up for freediving courses without hesitation. Just like that, we got ourselves yet another new hobby.

The trip also gave me the idea of documenting our underwater adventure in the form of a film. I knew nothing about filmmaking, so I decided to teach myself how to use movie-editing software. Two months of trial and error later, I ended up with a pretty satisfactory 20-minute-long film, and I can now add “moviemaker” to my list of achievements, next to “scuba diver”.

Six months ago, did I expect all these new experiences would be in my future? Of course not.

So whil e it may be true that there’s no escape from our daily routine, at least by traveling we can always escape our “old self”, and maybe even pick up some new skills.

28. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?

A. To share her diving experience.

B. To describe her passion for scuba diving.

C. To encourage readers to learn to dive.

D. To explore the purpose of traveling.

29. During their trip to Moalboal, the author and her friends ______.

A. enjoyed a typical relaxing vacation

B. found it easy to breathe under the sea

C. spent most of their time learning and practicing diving

D. went diving in the sea right after watching tutorial videos

30. How did the trip to Moalboal influence the author?

A. She learned a lot about freediving there.

B. She developed a new hobby as well as new skills.

C. She no longer took buoyancy for granted.

31. What message does the author intend to convey in the text?

A. Traveling is a good way to relax.

B. Traveling is a time for adventure.

C. Traveling lets us discover a new side of ourselves.

D. Traveling is simply an escape from our daily routines.

Dogs are considered by many people to be man’s best friend and with millions of dogs owned by families in the US, it is highly likely that many dogs are in need of some amount of training. Since dogs can hear sounds at much higher frequencies (频率) than humans, there is a wonderful tool for the training of the dog. It is an app called the Dog Whistle. This isn’t your typical whistle in that it produces sounds at a frequency that is unable to be heard by humans. This unique app will allow you to train your dog without the need of a dog whistle.

The Dog Whistle free app was created by an app developer Maoli Wang specifically for dog owners who are looking for a way to communicate with their dogs in order to be able to either train them or alert them when the noise around is too great for them to hear you call them. By simply fixing the app on your iPone, it will immediately turn itself into a dog whistle.

The app includes a very powerful system that is able to create different tones ranging from 16,000 to 40,000 Hz in order for a dog to be able to hear it. The app also has an on-screen sound meter in order for the user to monitor the sound level being produced. In that way, they can decide on which frequency works best for their dog. What’s more, the app easily produces the requested tones at the frequencies necessary to be used to communicate with your dog by simply tapping the screen of your phone.

The app was designed to be used in place of a dog whistle in order to get your dog’s attention when it is too noisy around them. The sound produced through the app is at a level that only dogs are able to hear and they will respond to the sound. If you own a dog and are having behavioral issues with them, you would surely benefit from the Dog Whistle free app available by clicking here.

32. On what is the development of the app based according to the first paragraph?

A. Dog’s good hearin g.

B. People’s love for dogs.

C. The use of smart phones.

D. Dog owners’ interest in training.

33. How does the app help in training a dog?

A. It records the ways the dog responds to sounds.

B. It produces beautiful sounds that interest the dog.

C. It produces whistles at a frequency intended for the dog.

D. It suggests a proper way to communicate with the dog.

34. Where is the app advised to be used?

A. In a strange situation.

B. In a noisy situation.

C. In an unsafe situation.

D. In a difficult situation.

35. The purpose of the text is to___________.

A. argue

B. report

C. prove

D. recommend

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

When we eat potato chips, it’s often difficult to stop until the bag’s empty. We open a bag of chips, and before we know it, they’re all gone. So why can’t we control ourselves when it comes to eating this salty snack? 36

Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, US, found that certain neurons(神经元)can make us want to eat salt. The neurons take note of whether our bodies are short of sodium(钠), the main part of salt. 37

To come to their conclusion, the scientists did experiments on mice. They found that when mice lack sodium, their body produces a chemical. 38

More research showed that adding salt to meals makes people enjoy their food more, which may cause us to continue eating even if we’re full.

Scientists from Deakin University in Australia asked healthy people to eat the same food for lunch for four weeks. 39 At the same time, the scientists measured how much these people ate. They also asked the people how they felt about each meal-if they felt happy or were still hungry after eating, for example.

The results showed that salt made people consume 11 percent more food than usual. 40

“But when we add salt to that food, all of a sudden those controls are gone,” researcher Russell Keast told Time.

So the next time you finish a whole bag of chips to yourself, don’t feel so bad about it- just blame it on your brain.

A. Eating less salt can be difficult at first.

B. It could be down to something inside our brain.

C. Each week, the amount of salt in the food was changed.

D. This chemical then makes the neurons in question become active.

E. Then, they send signals to our brain to encourage us to eat more salt.

F. When eating low-salt meals, they had better control over how much they ate.

G. While too much salt can lead to health problems, not enough can cause depression.

But I need exercise to get through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town. Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite o f their grandmother’s chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my “no thank you,” or by my choice to have a salad. Over the years, I have learned it’s okay to just say “no.” I shouldn’t feel sorry for refusing food that I don’t want to eat. So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5:00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice cream? Commitment. A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases self –confidence and energy, extends life and above all improve my body shape. This is the point where a smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit just right. It’s through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out. 1.Why is there a smile on the author’s face in the morning? A. Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
