Key Words;Dances with Wolves; human nature; peace; communication
Developed by director/star Kevin Costner over five years, the film had high production values[1] and won 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. It is credited as a leading influence for the revitalization of the Western genre of filmmaking in Hollywood. In 2007, Dances with Wolves was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."[3]
In 1863, First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is injured in the American Civil War. He requests a transfer to the western frontier. When he arrives, despite being alone and the threat of nearby Native American tribes, he is just companied by a horse that carried him in battle and a wolf he dubs "Two Socks". During that period, he makes friends with Sioux tribe which is so called barbarous race with their true hearts. When he returned to the White army, they mistake him for a hostile warrior and open fire, killing his horse and capturing him. Since then, Dunbar is ashamed as a white person , and completely becomes a part of Sioux. He insists call himself: dances with the wolves. Dunbar decides to leave the Sioux with his wife since his status as a perceived traitor puts the tribe in danger. This film artistically shows us the perfect combination between human and nature with his poetic picture and performance.
Although it is defined as a western film, it is not a traditional one. The first part of it gives us a evidence that it is not very difficult to be harmony among people even between human and animals ,human and nature if they have the truly sincere hearts. Dances with wolves just told us this kind of legend.
When Dunbar just arrives at the frontier, he felt the endless loneliness. At that time, a lonely wolf visits him everyday, even sometimes it follows him run around this desolated world. Dunbar very likes it instead of hurting it .He called the wolf "Two Socks" due to the white hair on its front feet.. "Two Socks is so vigilant even Dunbar feed it. But finally Two Socks can
directly take the food from Dunbar’s hand since their earnest hearts defeat the wolf’s nature. From my point of view, it just is the combination with human and animals with their rare and heart-touched sense of trust. Based on this kind of trust , Dunbar and two socks can” dance” together in this vast frontier which is the Dunbar’s Sioux name comes from. Till the end of this movie ,two socks is looking at when Dunbar was arrested as a traitor, no matter the bullets fr om the white army’s guns keeping hurting it. It is still stay there and never run away. In my opinion , there are 2 emotions full of this film , one is the deeply friendship between Dunbar and two socks. It is so respectful. The other one is so called civi lian’s barbarous behaviors. They heartlessly shot this loyalty wolf wih fun. It is do hateful.
When the horse was shot by the cruel white army, Dunbar rapidly moved to its side to touch it as it is his comrade although he fall down from it. He comforts it and told it it’s ok. That also is a deeply relationship between with human and animals. It is full of love and warm. It makes people reflect that why there are so many wars and killings among human but human can harmony with animals.
Human’s relationship i n this movie just likes a mirro to make us know how should we get along with each other. Many warm secens like every family give sDunbar and his wife gifts no matter how poor they are. which tols us that love ican beyond everything.Though Souix may ignorant and uncivilized but they kind and honest is far beyond
comparison.
It also exsits the war in this movie .That is the war between 2 tribes. After the battle , dances with the wolves said: "It was hard how to know how to feel. I'd never been in a battle like this one. There was no dark political objective. This was not a fight for territory or riches, or to make men free. They had been fought to preserve the food stores, that would see us through the winter. To protect the lives of women and children, and loved ones only a few feet away. Stone Calf was a great loss. But, even the old men could never remember such a one sided victory. And I gradually began to look at it in a new way. I felt a pride I'd never felt before. I'd never really known who John Dunbar was. Perhaps the name itself had no meaning. But, as I heard my Sioux name being called over and over... I knew for the first time who I really was." This great words teach us how to be a true man.
The whole movie deeply touched me. For everyone, a peaceful social environment is so important. Everyone include animals should be together harmoniously. It will bring endless disasters if we are greedy, selfish and insatiable. This classical movie also tells us that communication is so essential no matter the nature or the civil society.。
