1:be happy! the days that make us happy make us wise. ----john masefield

when i first read this line by england s poet laureate, it startled me. what did masefield mean? without thinking about it much,

i had always assumed that the opposite was true. but his sober assurance was arresting. i could not forget it.

finally, i seemed to grasp his meaning and realized that here was a profound observation. the wisdom that happiness

makes possible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused by fear.

active happiness---not mere satisfaction or contentment ---

often comes suddenly, like an april shower or the unfolding of

a bud. then you discover what kind of wisdom has accompanied it. the grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the shortcomings of your friends are more understandable and more forgivable. happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual vision.

nor are the insights of happiness limited to what is near

around you. unhappy, with your thoughts turned in upon your emotional woes, your vision is cut short as though by a wall. happy, the wall crumbles.

the long vista is there for the seeing. the ground at your feet,

the world about you----people, thoughts, emotions, pressures---are now fitted into the larger scene. everything assumes a

fairer proportion. and here is the beginning of wisdom.

2:facing the enemies within we are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you ve read in the papers. some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o clock in the morning. but once you learn to avoid that situation, you won t need to live in fear of it. fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. fear can destroy fortunes. fear can destroy relationships. fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us.

let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. the first enemy that you ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. what a tragic disease this is! ho-hum, let it slide. i ll just drift along. here s one problem with drifting: you can t drift your way to the to of the mountain.

the second enemy we face is indecision. indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. it will steal your chances for a better future. take a sword to this enemy.

the third enemy inside is doubt. sure, there s room for healthy skepticism. you can t believe everything. but you also can t let doubt take over. many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities nad doubt the opportunities. worse of all, they

doubt themselves. i m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. it will empty both your bank account and your heart. doubt is an enemy. go after it. get rid

of it.

the fourth enemy within is worry. we ve all got to worry some. just don t let conquer you. instead, let it alarm you. worry can

be useful. if you step off the curb in new york city and a taxi is coming, you ve got to worry. but you can t let worry loose like

a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. here s what you ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. whatever is out to get you, you ve got to get it. whatever is pushing on you, you ve got to push back.

the fifth interior enemy is overcaution. it is the timid approach

to life. timidity is not a virtue; it s an illness. if you let it go, it ll conquer you. timid people don t get promoted. they don t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace.

you ve got to avoid overcaution.

do battle with the enemy. do battle with your fears. build your courage to fight what s holding ou back, what s keeping you from your goals and dreams. be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.

3:the goodness of life though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. though life s goodness can at times be overshadowed, it is never outweighed.

for every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. for every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.

there is goodness to life that cannot be denied.

in the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.

there si no limit to the goodness of life. it grows more

abundant with each new encounter. the more you e

xperience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there

is to be lived.

even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be cov ered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. open

your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.

though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks,

it always endures. for in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. and so the goodness of

life is made even stronger by the very things that would

oppose it.

time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.

take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. then, share your good fortune with another. for the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.

though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

4:clear your mental space think about the last time you felt a negative emotion---like stress, anger, or frustration. what was going through your mind as you were going through that negativity? was your mind cluttered with thoughts? or was it paralyzed, unable to think?

the next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. yes, that s right, stop. whatever you re doing, stop and sit for one minute. while you re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.

allow that emotion to consume you. allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. don t cheat yourself here. take the entire minute---but only one minute---to do nothing else but feel that emotion.

when the minute is over, ask yourself, am i wiling to keep holding on to this negative emotion as i go through the rest of the day?

once you ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really fell it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion clears rather quickly.

if you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is ok. allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion. when you feel you ve had enough of the emotion, ask yourself if you re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of the day. if not, take a deep breath. as you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath.

this exercise seems simple---almost too simple. but, it is very effective. by allowing that negative emotion the space to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion rather than stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. you are actually taking away

the power of the emotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. when you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion, it loses its control. you can clear your head and proceed with your task.

try it. next time you re in the middle of a negative emotion, give yourself the space to feel the emotion and see what happens. keep a piece of paper with you that says the following:

stop. immerse for one minute. do i want to keep this negativity? breath deep, exhale, release. move on!

this will remind you of the steps to the process. remember;

take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. then, when you feel you ve felt it enough, release it---really let go of it. you will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from a negative situation and get to what you really want to do!

take mary who doesn t like herself. she s always telling you,

you are prettier than me. you are smarter. nobody likes me.

she s hoping that you will reply, no mary! you are clever. you are beautiful. after a while, people like mary get on your nerves! in a nutshell

when we don t like ourselves, we irritate other people. we also put ourselves through a lot of stress. when we accept

ourselves a little better, we don t play these games.

how can i like myself?

in our hearts, most of us believe we should be doing better. we think that we should have gotten higher grades. we want to be popular and hang out with the in crowd. we feel we don t measure up to our parents expectations. our parents help to confirm this idea when they ask, why can t you be more like your brother?

whenever you are feeling low, be your own best friend. accept that, up to now, you have lived your life the best way you know how. no one sets out to screw up their life! like anyone, you ve done the odd stupid thing. with more information you ll likely

do better in the future.

liking yourself means forgiving yourself. if you have made

some serious mistakes, if you have hurt some people and yourself feeling guilty won t help.

if you are feeling guilty about something, you have already suffered enough. being guilty for another six months won t

help anybody.

forget perfection and aim for improvement.

it s a funny thing. when you forgive yourself for your own mistakes, you automatically begin to let others off the hook for the same things.

but i m not brilliant...

you might look at yourself and say, i m not as beautiful as my sister, i m not as talented as my friends and i m not brilliant at anything! how can i feel good about me?

fact: nobody is good at everything and most of us have those thoughts!

but here s the lowdown! talent and beauty are very useful but there are plenty of talented and beautiful people around whom we don t necessarily admire. and some of them are a pan in the butt!

the qualities most of us value above all others are honesty, courage, persistence, generosity and humility. take a look at

this list and you ll find something interesting. you aren t born with these things. you develop them. anyone can have them! if you want self-respect, and respect from others, you don t have to be an einstein or a super-model.

you simply work at developing your own honesty, determination, generosity, humility and courage. it is called character .

in a nutshell

how you feel about yourself is in your hands.

The traditional holidays in our house when I was a child were spent timing elaborate meals around football games. My father tried to make pleasant chitchat and eat as much as he could during halftime. At Christmas he found time to have a cup or two of holiday cheer and do his holly-shaped bow tie. But he didn't truly shine until Valentine's Day. I don't know whether it was because work at the office slowed during February or because the football season was over. But Valentine's Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly thought of him as my " Valentine Man." My first recollection of the magic he could bring to Valentine's Day came when I was six. For several days I had been cutting out valentines for my classmates. Each of us was to decorate a "mailbox " and put it on our desk for others to give us cards. That box and its contents ushered in a succession of bittersweet memories of my entrance into a world of popularity contests marked by the number of cards received, the teasing about boyfriends/girlfriends and the tender care I gave to the card from the cutest boy in class. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was signed "Love, Dad", and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to represent my birthstone, a ruby. There is little difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember wearing that ring with a pride that all the cards in the world could not surpass. As I grew older, the gifts gave way to heart-shaped boxes filled with my favorite chocolates and always included a special card signed "Love, Dad" .In those years my "thank-yous" became more of a perfunctory response. The cards seemed less important, and I took for granted the valentine that would always be there. Long past the days of having a "mailbox" on my desk, I had placed my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from " significant others", and " Love, Dad" just didn't seem quite enough. If my father knew then that he had been replaced, he never let it show. If he sensed any disappointment over valentines that didn't arrive for me, he just tried that much harder to create a positive atmosphere, giving me an extra hug and doing what he could to make my day a little brighter. My mailbox eventually had a rural address, and the job of hand-delivering candy and cards was relegated to the U.S. Postal Service. Never in ten years was my father's package late--nor was it on the Valentine's Day eight years ago when I reached into the mailbox to find a card addressed to me in my mother's handwriting. It was the kind of card that comes in an inexpensive assortment box sold by a child going door-to-door to try to earn money for a school project. It was the kind of card that you used to get from a grandmother or an aging aunt or, in this case, a dying father. It was the kind of card that put a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes because you knew the person no longer was able to go out and buy a real valentine. It was a card that signaled this would be the last you receive from him. The card had a photograph of tulips on the outside, and on the inside my mother had printed "Happy V alentine's Day". Beneath it, scrawled in barely legible handwriting, was "Love, Dad". His final card remains on my bulletin board today. It's a reminder of how special fathers can

Grow Great by Dreams The question was once asked of a highly successful businessman, “How have you done so much in your lifetime?” He replied, “I have dreamed. I have turned my mind loose to imagine what I wanted to do. Then I have gone to bed and thought about my dreams. In the night I dreamt about my dreams. And when I awoke in the morning, I saw the way to make my dreams real. While other people were saying, 'You can't do that, it is impossible,' I was well o n my way to achieving what I wanted.” As Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the U.S., said: “We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers.” They see things in the soft haze of a spring day, or in the red fire on a long winter's evening. Some of us let these dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nourish them through bad days until they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.

A Smile is A Gift That Anyone Can Give It costs nothing, but saves much. It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give. It happens in a flash, and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich that he can get along without it; none so poor that he is not enriched by it. It creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friends. It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sick, and nature's best antidote for trouble. It cannot be bought, borrowed, or stolen, for it is no earthly good to anyone until it is given away. If you meet someone too burdened with grief or worry to smile, just give him one of yours. For nobody needs a smile so much as he who has none left to give. Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what's next in the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope,

One of my coworkers complained the water tasted “dirty”. It went on for a few days, and she was stunned I could drink the water without any trouble. I started to doubt my taste buds, but the water really tasted fine. Finally, she figured out the problem was actually her cup. Passages for Reading 1. Smoking It is known to all that smoking is bad for health. Scientific research show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problem. The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year. Still, many people find it difficult to stop smoking. One reason is that smoking usually becomes a habitual behavior, and habits, whether good or bad are not easy to be given up. Another reason is the effect of nicotine, the substance found in cigarettes works on people somewhat as drugs do. Measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. World "No Tobacco Day" is observed every year as the biggest campaign against smoking. 2. My First Job Before I started at university, I took my first job as a waitress in a nice restaurant. At the night before my first day, I was too excited to go to sleep and as a result, I got up late in the morning. I threw on my clothes and rushed over to the restaurant. In a great hurry, I didn't hear clearly the head waiter's instruction that we should go into the kitchen through one door and out from the other. So when I took two plates of eggs and bacon and an orange juice out to the restaurant, I went straight towards the wrong door and collided with another waiter coming in! Worst of all was that I wore a pair of smart shoes but with high heels! A few hours later I was in agony yet had no time to change them. By the time we finished serving dinner at about 10:30 I was completely exhausted. Nevertheless, I learnt something through my experience. 3. Money Money is what everybody desires. It can be used to buy food, clothes, books, bicycle, furniture and many other things people need or want. Money is considered by many people as the most important thing in life. With money, they can go wherever they please and do whatever they want. With money, they can buy a fine house to live in, fashionable clothes to put on, and a nice bicycle to ride. And with money, they can employ attendants to serve them. In a word, money can make people comfortable and bring them happiness. However, money is also the source of all crimes and brings them misery. Since money is so tempting, quite a few people are attracted by it and begin to go astray. By hook or by crook, they try to make money. To get more money, they gamble, swindle, steal, rob or do many other evil things, for "money makes the mare go". As a result, money leads them to jail or even to the execution grounds. Of course money is useful and desirable, yet we should make money in proper way and spend
