They also found that89%of those students had cellphones, most of them with text and Web surfing capabilities. They are more wired than ever—but they’re also getting warier.Increasingly, they’ve had to deal with online bullies, who are posting anything from unflattering photos to online threats.Privacy issues also are hitting home, most recently when students discovered that personal updates on their Facebook pages were being automatically forwarded to contacts they didn’t necessarily want to have the information.Facebook was forced to let users turn off the data stream after they rebelled.

He investigated the nature of magnetism and electricity. He even coined the word “electric” and named the ends of a magnet “north pole” and “south pole”. He started the study on the relationship between magnetism and electricity, though sadly he didn’t complete it. His research method was revolutionary in that he used experiments rather than pure logic and reasoning like the ancient Greek philosophers did. It was a new attitude toward scientific investigation. Until then, scientific experiments had not been favored.America’s Lacking Language SkillsI. Search Readingi. Knowing a foreign language have a host of cognitive and academic benefits.
Skyscrapers are for a time viewed as the symbol of success, powerfully economic totems, achievements of high technology and ego-feeding. After the Sept.11 attack, a debate has raged among architects over the safety and practicality of the skyscrapers. Some architects consider that it is inadvisable to re-erect skyscrapers which are tempting a target and fragile deathtraps. Some think that there is no need to worry about it, if experience is summed up, design proposals are improved, and countermeasures are strengthened, it will be no big problems. Others are still nostalgic for the past, believing that human beings should live closer to the earth. In short, people have to wait expectantly for the fact that the era of constructing skyscrapers is over or is developing into a deeper level.2、毕业前夕,我认真地反思我的大学生活,决定向研究生院提出申请继续学习。
On the eve of graduation, I reflected on my college life and decided to apply to graduate school for further studies. There are both positive and negative aspects of studying in graduate school. Particularly when starting out, there will be lots of hurdles. Apart from that, graduate students spend all day in lab working on the same experiments. When little progress is made, the frustration is great. This is one of the reasons why the dropout rate is so high in graduate school. Therefore, you'd better be sure that your choice is rightfor you.To succeed in graduate school, you must learn to work your own hours, to collaborate and interact with people in your lab; you must love your discipline and have a passion for research; you must also be resistant to failure and be able to take satisfaction in small successes.3、科学家们用各种各样的方法来研究自然,有的方法比较直接,有的比较间接。
Scientists study nature in a variety of ways. Some approaches are quite direct; others are indirect. Whatever approaches scientists may adopt in their research work, they always follow a certain pattern of steps. This general pattern for looking at the universe has become known as the scientific method. It includes the following four steps: 1. formulating a problem, 2. observation and experiment, 3. interpreting the data, and 4. testing the interpretation by further observation and experiment. To sum up, the scientific method is not a mechanical process but a process involving creative thinking.4、1967年12月3日,一位南非医生克利斯蒂安•伯尔纳德(Christiaan Barnard)将一位24岁姑娘的心脏植入一位50岁男人的胸膛。
On December 3, 1967, Christiaan Barnard, a South African doctor, transplanted a 24-year old girl’s heart into the chest of a 50-year old man. This operation aroused the imagination of the whole world. There was a story that a television company would pay a million dollars for a single photo of the old man’s heart. In the United States there was another man who had been engaged in the investigation of organ transplantation. It was Norman Shumway who taught Dr. Christiaan Barnard the techniques of organ transplant, after twenty years of experiments on animals. Thelatter has become one of the foremost heart surgeons in the world of today. He has solved many earlier problems of operation posterior to the solution to rejection. His success rate of operation is high, because there are 59 out of 100 cases who can survive from his operation.5、在全球化的今天,为保持在职业市场上的竞争力,也为了更好地参与文化和社会生活,我们必须终身学习。
