For example, Chinese festivals are mainly named after the season. While western festivals were mostly named after the religious figures or events. Another difference is that western festivals are based on solar calendar which is world-wide-used but Chinese traditional festivals are based on lunar calendar which is used only in China.

Through analyzing the similarities and differences of Chinese festivals and American festivals, learners can have a better understanding of our own and Western festivals.

2 Festivals in China

2.1Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the ending of old year and the coming of the New Year. It indicates a good luck. The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese. At that time all families will get together just like Christmas in the West. People who live far away from home will go back home.

In China, before coming of the New Year, houses are thoroughly cleaned, people would have their hair cut , food prepared, debts repaid, and new clothes bought. Doors are decorated with scrolls of characters on red paper to seek good luck and praise nature, this custom stemming from the hanging of peach-wood charms to keep away ghosts and evil spirits. In most homes incense is burned, and also in the temples as a mark of respect to ancestors. In addition, symbolic flowers and fruits were used to decorate the house, and colorful New Year pictures are placed on the walls. The most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days to celebrate the lunar calendar ’s New Year . On Spring Festival eve, the most important thing is to have a big family meal. Northern Chinese people like to eat dumplings, Dumplings are the most traditional food whose shape is like a vcoin. while Southern Chinese people usually eat rice. Spring Festival is a time for all family members to go home for a family reunion, which lends itself to the meal's common name of a "family reunion dinner". Children like the festival very much, because they can have delicious food and wear new clothes .They can also get some money from their parents. This money is given to children for good luck . The Spring Festival lasts about half a month long .People visit relatives and fri ends with the words “Ha ppy New Year”. People enjoy the Spring Festival, in this time they can have a good rest.

There are many traditional customs on this festival.

Waving Goodbye to the Kitchen God

According to Chinese folklore, the kitchen god travels to heaven at the end of every year to report the earthly goings-on to the god of heaven. In the past, around December 23 or 24 on the lunar calendar people would prepare candy for the kitchen god to make sure he says nice things about them, but few people still carry on this custom.

Sweeping off the Dust

Every year, after sending the Kitchen God to the Heaven, people begin to clean their houses and wait for the coming Spring Festival. Sweeping off the

dust is one of the customs that people say goodbye to the old year and welcome the New Year. In order to do this well, people will clean every corner of the house. Although it is a ritual of cleaning, it is the necessary ritual after offering sacrifices to the gods. It is also said that people are afraid of offending the Kitchen God. So when they wave goodbye to the Kitchen God, people could try their best to clean their houses to welcome Spring Festival.

There is the custom of staying up all night on the New Year’s Eve. The whole family sits together to chat, look into the future until dawn to welcome the lunar New Year. Firecrackers and fireworks always provide the background music for the people staying up. There is also the custom of burning fire and candles throughout the New Year’s Eve. The lights are turne d on continuously for the whole night.

In many places people like to set off firecrackers. The tradition of setting off firecrackers on the first day of New Year has a history of more than 2000 years. In China, the Spring Festival is also called "Nian", after the name of a terrible beast in Chinese folklore. Every year at this time, it came down from the mountain to the villages to eat people and animals. In the past, people burnt bamboo to generate huge noises to drive it away, and this tradition has changed to the use of firecrackers. The thundering sound of firecrackers announces the coming of the lunar New Year, as well as various gods descending from the Heaven. It was believed that the gods returned to the moral world with new missions after they made their reports for the old year. Each household would set up an altar to welcome them back. There are different kinds of gods in the Chinese people’s mind, such as the God of Happiness, the God of Heaven, and the God of Earth, etc. People worship those gods to pray for a good future.

2.2Double-Seventh Day

Chinese Valentine's Day falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. This is a day devoted to romance. In China, this day is

also called "The Begging Festival" or "The Daughter's Festival." It is an important day for girls. In the evening, girls prepare melons and fruit before worship and prayers for a good marriage.

Almost everyone in China is very familiar with the story of the festival. It is said that the seventh daughter of the Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd were separated by the Emperor; the girl was forced to move to the star Vega and the cowherd to the Altair. They were only allowed to meet once a year on the day of seventh day of seventh lunar month. The story begins with the handsome but poor orphan who lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law. After his parents passed away, the boy's brother got the house and land. But all he had was an old ox. The seventh daughter of the Emperor, also known as the Weaving Girl, was good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothes. The Emperor particularly liked her skills of weaving clouds with rainbows to make the world more beautiful. The cowherd's ox, which was actually an immortal from heaven, made mistakes in heaven and was reincarnated as an ox to toil on earth. One day, the ox suddenly said to the cowherd: "You are a nice person. If you want to get married, go to the creek and your wish will come true." The old ox told its master that several young goddesses would come to this pond in a few days to bathe. One of them would be called Weaving girl, Weaving girl was a daughter of the Emperor of Heaven. She was very beautiful and kind. The old ox said that if cowherd could take away her clothes while she was in the pond, she would be his wife.

When the day came, Cowherd hid in the tall reeds by the pond and waited for the young goddesses. They soon came, just as the old ox had said. They took off their silk robes and jumped happily into the clear water. Cowherd crept out of his hiding place, picked up weaving girl's clothes and ran away. Her companions were so frightened that they jumped out, dressed as quickly as they could and flew away. Weaving girl was left alone in the pond. Cowherd returned and gave her back her clothes. He had loved her from the first moment he saw her. They looked into each other's eyes. The girl agreed that she would

be his wife. They were deeply in love and got married very soon afterwards. Cowherd worked hard growing crops and weaving girl raised silkworms. Three years later, weaving girl gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. They live happily together for the rest of their lives.

One day, the old ox was dying. Before it closed its eyes for the last minute, it told the young couple that its hide would enable a man to fly to the heaven. It told them to preserve it carefully. Meanwhile, the King and Queen of Heaven found out that their daughter had gone to the world of Man and had a husband. They were very angry. The Queen flew down to earth with some of soldiers. Cowherd came back from the field one day to find his two children sitting on the ground, crying. They told him that an old lady had taken their mother away. Cowherd remembered what the old ox had told him. He placed the twins in wicker baskets on a pole to carry on his shoulder, put on the magic hide, and flew up into the sky. He had almost caught up with the Queen and his wife when the Queen heard the crying of his children. Looking back, with an angry wave of her arm, a raging torrent immediately appeared between her group and cowherd. He could not get past this wide swollen river. Heartbroken, Cowherd and his children could only look and weep bitterly. The King was moved by the sound of their crying, and decided to allow cowherd and weaving girl to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

The poor couple of Cowherd and Weaving girl each became a star. Cowherd is Altair and weaving girl is Vega. The wide river that keeps them apart is known as the Milky Way. On the east side of the Milky Way, Altair is the middle one of a line of three. The end ones are the twins. To the southeast are six stars in the shape of an ox. Vega is to the west of the Milky Way; the stars around her form in the shape of a loom. Every year, the two stars of Altair and Vega are closest together on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

This moving love story has passed down from generation to generation. It is well known that very few magpies are seen on the Double-Seventh Day. This is because most of them fly to the Milky Way, where they form a bridge so that

the two lovers might come together. The next day, it is seen that many magpies are bald, which is because cowherd and weaving girl walked and stood too long on the heads of their loyal friends.

In ancient times, the Double-Seventh Day was a festival especially for young women. Girls, no matter from rich or poor families, would put on their holiday best to celebrate the annual meeting of the cowherd and the Girl Weaver. Parents would place an incense burner in the courtyard and lay out some fruit as offerings. Then all the girls in the family would kowtow to Cowherd and weaving girl and pray for ingenuity.

The Double-Seventh Day is not a public holiday in China. However, it is still a day to celebrate the annual meeting of the loving couple. Not surprisingly, many people consider the Double-seventh Day as the Chinese Valentine's Day.

3 Festivals in America

3.1Christmas Day

Christmas day is one of the most important festivals in America. It is also the celebration of the birth of Jesus. The date of the celebration is traditional and is not considered to be Jesus’ actual birthday. Christmas is for love. It was love for which Jesus came to this world and sacrificed his life. About 2000 years ago God sent an angel to find a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to Joseph a carpenter. The angel told Mary that by God’s power she would conceive and bear a son. When Joseph knew that she was pregnant an angel instructed him to marry her. Because of a census Joseph took her to Bethlehem. While there Mary gave birth to Jesus. She gave birth to him in a manger because there was no room at the inn. The shepherds visited Jesus in Bethlehem. At the earliest Roman Catholics celebrate Christmas to remember the day of birth of Jesus Christ in December 25th.

In America, Christmas is one of the biggest festivals of the year. During

Christmas season people send Christmas cards and presents to relatives and friends. The simple meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Cultural celebrations of Christmas include glittering light displays, the ever-present jolly old Santa Claus, group celebrations and singing baked holiday cookies and cakes, decorations of mistletoe and pine wreaths lighted, ornamented Christmas trees with wrapped presents displayed underneath. In Europe, typically family and friends gather together on Christmas Eve,on Dec 24,for a big turkey dinner, completed with Christmas pudding. Everyone shares their stories during the past year. Games are played after the dinner.

Though everyone enjoys Christmas Day, it is particularly enjoyed by children because they know they are going to receive presents. Small children believe that their presents are given by Father Christmas. Father Christmas is a kind old man, who lives at the North Pole. He travels through the sky on a sleigh which is pulled by reindeers and loaded with presents. He enters by climbing the chimney. When children go to bed on Christmas Eve, they hang a stocking at the end of their beds. When they wake, they will find their stockings filled with presents. Children are very excited on Christmas morning and always wake up early. Christmas is also a family celebration. All family members eat together, play party games and watch Christmas TV programs. Many families go to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. After services, they gather around the tree and open their gifts. Then they sit down to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner.

Christmas Day have many customs.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus is generally described as a fat, kind man with a white beard, a red suit and a sleigh full of toys drawn through the air by eight reindeer. Santa Claus is said to visit on Christmas Eve, entering houses through the chimney to leave the presents under the Christmas tree in the stockings of all good children.

Christmas Tree

The Christmas tree is the symbol of the Christmas season. Christmas tree is usually an evergreen conifer such as pine or fir. The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts or dates. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which with electrification could also be replaced by Christmas lights. Today, there is a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garland, tinsel, and candy canes. A star may be placed at the top of the tree, to represent the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity. The families would set up these trees in a prominent location of their homes and decorate them with colored paper, small toys, food, and sometimes candles.

Christmas Colors

There are many colors associated with Christmas such as the red of Santa Claus’s or Father Christmas’ outf it; the green of fir trees; the gold of candles; and the white of snowy fields. Red is the prominent color. As a religious symbol it stands for fire, blood and charity. Green is a symbol for nature, youth and the hope of eternal life. White is a religious symbol which stands for light, purity, joy and glory. Gold stands for sunlight . It is the color of Christmas stars, tinsel, candles, and electric lights.

Celebrations

During Christmas most houses and streets are decorated with Christmas trees and lots of colored lights. The sound of carols and Christmas song can be heard everywhere. Christmas cards are sent to friends and relatives. Presents are placed under the tree ready to be opened on Christmas Day. Children write letters to Santa Claus, telling him what present they would like to receive. Many people attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Morning. After the evening service on Christmas Eve, the family will gather together for a time of celebration. “The Night before Christmas” is read to children before they go to bed to await the arrival of Santa Claus. The traditional Christmas Dinner is eaten on Christmas Day. This usually

consists of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and varieties of other dishes. Desserts include pumpkin pie, plum pudding and fruitcake.

3.2Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 each year. Today Valentine's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, mostly in the West.

The original "St. Valentine" was a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saint named Valentinus. The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages.

Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the red rose , chocolates and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

There are different opinions as to the origin of it. Some think that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Besides some say that Valentine’s Day is rooted in the story of the martyred Valentine. Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men – his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death and Saint Valentine was buried on the day of February 14th. Later lovers who got married with the help of Valentine began to memorialize him on this day.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball. Today on Saint Valentine’s Day people send roses or chocolates to their beloved persons. Entertainment is another important part. They may go out to the street and dance crazily with strangers. This also reflects that westerners are more open-minded. St. V alentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your love to somebody your care. People can send candies to the one they think is special. Or they can send roses. Most people send a greeting card named after the notes that St. Valentine sent from the jail. Valentines can be sentimental romantic and heartfelt. They can be funny and friendly. If the sender is shy valentines can be anonymous. Americans of all ages like to send and receive valentines. Handmade valentines created by cutting hearts out of colored paper show that a lot of thought was put into making them personally. Valentines can be heart-shaped.

All huaman beings have certain basic needs. Our fundamental needs for things that keep us alive. This is the physioligical need. All individuals must eat in order to survive. But what people eat, when they eat, and the manners in which they eat are all patterned by culture. No society views everything in its environment that is edible and might provide nurishment as food. Americans eat oysters but not snail. The French eat snails but not locusts. The Jews eat fish but not pork. The Hindus eat pork but not beef. The Russiand eat beef but not snake. We all have ideas about what kinds of food are good to eat. We also have ideas about what kinds of food are bad to eat. As a result, people from one culture often think the food that people from another culture eat are disgusting or nauseating. Dislike is not the only reason why some culture will not eat a certain food. In some clture, certain foods are taboo. Sometimes the food taboos may be so strong thrat just the thought of eating forbidden foods can cause an indivdual to feel ill. We can also find culture difference in way of bring up children treating the early, greeting each other, saying and spending money before other people do in everyday, but in some English-speaking countries, people do not agree with us.

Chinese Education Is Superior The born of a baby is considered as a blessing to a family, while the family education will in turn leave a brand on the baby’s future. I was born in a Chinese family with western education system. I’m well respected. I’m growing up without any fence. But reflecting on my personal upbringing, I can tell you with certainty that Chinese Education is superior. Firstly, in a regulated Chinese family, the rules for family are the core of its education system, which could ensure children staying away from some bad habits. The rules Chua set up contributed to her children’s promising victory over long turn. But in my family, there is no such notion. At my formative year, I could stay up late enough to embrace the sunrise. Consequently, I always suffered from drowsiness at class. Worse still, my poor eyesight due to it has become a handicap to me. Therefore, Chinese strict rules are necessary, especially for a young child.

National race The whole question of the changing role of Blacks in American society as been the subject of newspaper articles around the world so frequently that visitors to the United States do not know what to expect when they arrive. They may be surprised when they see that Blacks and Whites work side by side in offices , factories , and schools across the country . The majority of Blacks in the United States, h owever, live in and around only a small number of American cities. Many dark-skinned visitors arrive in the United States fearing personal attack or expecting various degrees of racial prejudice. Some forms of discrimination still exist ,unfortunately, especially in the areas of the housing , schools , and jobs . The school equality is still more a dream than a reality. There are still too many areas of the country where Black Americans do not enjoy the same full opportunities as White Americans . However, the vast majority of American s are working, studying, and sharing public places together. This was not true even a few years ago in some parts of the country, but progress is steadily being made. You will be able to observe the improvement in race relations as soon as your plane lands . You will see it in the airport, in public buses and trains , in theaters , restaurants , rest room, in sops and libraries , in offices and factories . Close personal friendships between Blacks and

一个中国学生得知其美籍教师生病后,会关切地说“you should go to see a doctor!(你应该到医院看看)。” 而西方人若听你说“you are fat(你胖了)”或“you are so thin(你又瘦了)”, 即使比较熟悉,也会感到尴尬和难以作答。 “Your English is very good(你的英文很好),” “No, no, my English is very poor(不,我的英文很差)”;“You’ve done a very good job(你的工作做的很好),” “No, I don't think so. It's the result of joint efforts(不,这是大家共同努力得结果).”
