Over a 10-year period, Jones had managed to cheat thousands of people throughout the state out of almost $10 million. He advertised his fantastic ideas on TV. “For some reason,” Jones said, “TV seems to break the ice. Even though you are a total stranger to the viewer, once he sees you on TV in his home, he feels like he knows you. You enter his living room and become a trusted friend.”Jones had an imagination that wouldn‟t quit. One time he showed viewers an “official government” earthquake report which “proved” that the western half of California would collapse into the sea within three years. For $100, he said, Jones would insure your house and property for full value. Thousands of people who saw that TV ad sent him a hundred dollars each.In another TV ad, Jones claimed that he had come to an agreement with the federal and state government for exclusive(独享的) air rights. He told viewers that, for only $100, they could own the first 10 miles above all their property. You would be able to charge any commercial plane that flew over your property $100 per crossing. You would also be able to charge government rockets, satellites, space shuttles, and space stations $100 for each and every violation of your air rights.Another time, Jones claimed to have invented a product that gets rid of calories. He showed the viewers a spray can of “NoCal.” He said that by simply spraying NoCal on your food, a chemical interaction would cause all the calories in the food to simply disappear within about 10 seconds. The NoCal was only $10 a can. As usual, Jones received thousands of checks in the mail. The judge told Jones that he should be ashamed of himself. Jones responded that he was very ashamed of himself, and that when he got out of prison he hoped to become a TV adviser to help people avoid getting cheated. He told the judge that he was already developing an instructional CD that, for merely $100, would save people thousands of dollars in scams(骗局). The judge nodded, and then changed Jones‟ sentence from 10 years to 12 years.31. According to Jones, he could successfully cheat many people mainly because _______.A. he promised them a large profitB. they were too eager to make moneyC. they believed too much in TV adsD. he was skillful in communicating with people32. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Jones felt guilty and was determined to lead a new life.B. Jones was closely related to the state government.C. Western California was in danger of going under the sea.D. Jones showed unusual imagination in his tricks.33. We can infer that people who wanted to buy “NoCal” from Jones _______.A. were mainly from low income familiesB. all had a rich knowledge of chemistryC. were probably interested in losing weightD. usually did the shopping through the Internet34. The judge changed the sentence at last because _______.A. Jones was planning another big scamB. he could hardly believe what Jones had told himC. Jones had cheated more people than he expectedD. he had suffered from Jones‟ scams himselfBIf you want to help children develop language and speech skills, UCLA researchers say, listening to what they have to say is just as important as talking to them. The effect of a conversation between a child and an adult is about six times as great as the effect of adult speech input alone, the researchers found. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction,” said the study‟s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn‟t have much of an effect —positively or negatively—as long as it wasn‟t displacing conversations between an adult and a child. The UCLA study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.Assessed separately, factors positively associated with language development included each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.“The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is,”Zimmerman said. “Although it‟s mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes. They‟ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they‟re doing, such as, …I‟m putting on your pajamas now‟. But give your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment,” she added. “If parents can carve out some conversation time—maybe at bath time or at dinner time—that‟s a wonderful thing.”35. The researchers also found that TV viewing _______.A. had a positive effect on a child‟s language developmentB. had not much of effect on a child‟s language developmentC. affected a child‟s language development negativelyD. was displacing conversations between an adult and a child36. Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that _______.A. parents should let their children talk most of the timeB. children should watch TV programs selectivelyC. the conversation between parents and children should be two-wayD. it‟s no good for parents correcting their children‟s mistakes when they are speaking37. We can conclude from the last paragraph that _______.A. parents should leave a child talking aloneB. parent-child conversation can be carried out at any proper timeC. parents should let a child repeat what he or she saysD. bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child38. The underlined word “tailor” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by _______.A. controlB. improveC. passD. adjust四、任务型阅读No one comes to work for free except when you are volunteering for a worthy cause. But the paycheck is just one of the many rewards companies use to employ and keep workers. A satisfied employee produces good work, which in turn creates satisfied customers. So aside from a quality working environment, what rewards can a company provide? Many people work a “professional day.” Your salary is fixed no matter how ma ny extra hours or weekends you work. So, right off the bat then, the primary reward is a good salary. An employee must feel they get paid at the proper market value for their skill. Once settled, though, companies should continue giving rewards throughout the year.Let‟s start off with a simple “thank you”. When a team member completes a task, no matter how small, just send a simple thank-you e-mail. At a higher level is a congratulatory e-mail. After your team has successfully completed a project, you can send a note to the team, including your customers, congratulating them on their excellent job. Going further up the appreciation ladder, if your team member has worked long hours, and given up precious evenings with their family, a thank-you note is almost necessary in this case. Extra effort on the job should always be appreciated and never taken for granted. On a more practical level, a gift-giving program has worked well for many companies. A program like this works like rewards you might earn on your credit card. For example, you can give a peer 5 points for a good performance or a manager can reward 40 points to a team member for a particular long effort or successful project. Points are accumulated by the employee and can be changed for any number of gifts. While not quite over-time pay, employees appreciate the extra little bit of compensation.A celebratory lunch or dinner is a nice reward as well. It also serves as an opportunity for team building. A celebratory meal paid by the company can be awarded for work-related events, such as a successful completion of a project, a service anniversary, or a year-end party. Other celebratory meals can also be taken for non-company related events such as a birthday, a marriage engagement or a birth of a new child. Not usually considered a reward, a company-sponsored trip to an industry conference is a nice reward as well. This is a reward in that you can take time away from the office, you can learn about the latest industry trends and practices and also meet people from other companies in your similar line of business. Unlike a standard business trip, there are long meetings, various notes or trip reports to provide. The last bit of motivation is not a company reward but a personal one, the holiday gift. Employees should be aware of any rules regarding the giving of gifts. There might be limits, for example, on the value of such gifts. Usually a manager will give individual gifts to team members as a signal of appreciation. In contrast, team members might want to get together and give the manager a single gift. If team members give individual gifts to a manager, team members will start competing as to who gives the “best” gift to the manager. So there you have it to make the work place just a lit tle more “rewarding”.To (1)________ Employees to Work Efficiently高三英语课堂练习(七十二)答案1-10 ABADC BBDDB11-30ACBBC DDABD CACDA ABCDB31-38 CDCA BCBD1. Others must travel as checked bags or in the cargo hold—a dark and sometimes dangerous place where temperatures can vary wildly.Binder and Wiesel started Pet Airways in 2005. The last four years have been spent designing their fleet of five planes according to new requirements, dealing with FAA regulations and setting up airport schedules. The two say they’re surprised at the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities—New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest U. S. airlines. For owners the big difference is service. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a plane retooled and lined with carriers in place of seats. Pets (about 50 on each flight) will be escorted (护送) to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a “Pet Lounge(休息室)” for future fliers to wait before flights.A trip from New York to Los Angeles, for example, will take about 24 hours. On that route, pets will stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time and dinner.Amanda Hickey of Portland, Ore. is one of the new airline’s first customers. Her two dogs are taking their first flight soon.Hickey said the service was a welcome alternative to flying her dogs in cargo when she transports them from her soon-to-be Denver home to Chicago to stay while she and her boyfriend travel to Aruba to get married.“For a li ttle bit more money, I have peace of mind,” she said.31. Binder and Wiesel decided to start Pet Airways because __________.A. most commercial airlines don’t allow taking petsB. all commercial airlines charge a high price to fly a petC. to put pets in bags is extremely dangerousD. there isn’t a safe way to get pets from one city to another32. Which of the following is TRUE about Pet Airways?A. It has flown pets for five years.B. It met with dissatisfaction at the beginning.C. It is popular with pet owners.D. It is against FAA regulations.33. Which of the following services is NOT provided by Pet Airways?A. The pets will have bathroom breaks.B. The pets can take a walk on the planes freely.C. The pets will be placed in the main cabin.D. The animals will be checked on every 15 minutes during flight.34. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. Alysa Binder and Dan WieselBKingda Ka, the tallest roller coaster on Earth, drops its passengers a life-flashing 418 feet. Ferrari World’s Formula Rossa, the fastest, takes riders’ breath away at speeds of up to 150 mph. BRC Imagination Arts, a Southern California design firm, has proposed something entirely new: a ride that creates the sensation of zero gravity for up to eight seconds at a time.BRC drew its concept from the “Vomit Comet” the plane NASA uses to train astronauts. Its proposed theme-park ride would travel up and then back, similar to the existing “Superman: Escape from Krypton” coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. But unlike Superman and other open-car coasters, the vomit-comet ride would be fully enclosed. Riders would enjoy the illusion of floating within a stable chamber. To create that illusion, a special motor system would speed coasters up the track with great precision(精确度). As the coaster approached a top speed of more than 100 mph, it would suddenly and ever so slightly slow down—just enough to throw the passengers up from their seats and then quickly adjust its speed to fly in formation with and around the passengers. As the coaster reached the top of the track and began to drop back down, the computer system would continue to match its speed to that of the falling passengers, extending the sensation of weightlessness for several additional seconds, and finally rapidly slow down to a stop back at the base station.Roller coasters typically cost no more than $30 million, but the zero-gravity ride would cost $50 million or more to a large extent because the precision-response propulsion system(推进系统) is so complex. But if someone were to write a check today, Rogers says, his company could be sending riders on weightless journeys by the end of 2014.35. What makes BRC’s coaster different?A. It’s the tallest roller coaster in the States.B. It’s the fastest roller coaster on Earth.C. It can bring a sensation of zero gravity to its riders.D. It is a NASA product.36. Why would people in BRC’s coaster have an illusion of floating in the chamber?A. Because it’s designed with the inspiration of Superman.B. Because a special functioning motor system is applied to it.C. Because the coaster can approach a top speed of more than 100 mph.D. Because the coaster would cost $20 million more than normal ones.37. At what point could a rider begin to feel weightless?A. When the coaster reduced its speed immediately after it reached its top speed.B. When the coaster began to increase its speed.C. When the coaster reduced its speed to a stop back at the base station.D. When the coaster reached the top of the track.38. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A. BRC is a famous design firmB. you feel like a superman when riding BRC coasterC. BRC’s budget can’t make the project complete until 2014D. Instead, by an accident of history, Australia has been mainly populated with Westerners.Sadly, no major Australian newspaper or expert commented. This made me aware that Australians are reluctant to face Australia’s painful new geopolitical realities.Against this background, the release of the Asian Century White Paper is timely. It should provide a sharp wake-up call t o the Australian population that Australia’s destiny(命运) is now firmly tied to Asia. Julia Gillard is right in saying, “The transformation of the Asian region into the economic powerhouse of the world is not only unstoppable, it is gathering pace.”One truly impressive part of the paper is the data it provid es on Asia’s rise. It notes, for example, that in the past 20 years, China and India have almost tripled(增三倍) their share of the global economy and increased their economic size almost six times over. By 2025, the region as a whole will make up almost half the world’s output. In this Asian century, as Western power gets weak steadily, Australia will be left “beached”alone as the only Western country (together with New Zealand) in Asia. Twenty-two million Australians will have to learn to deal with 3.5 billion Asians with great care and sensitivity.Ignorance about Asia could prove to be deadly for Australia’s long-term future. This is why the report is right in focusing on Australian misunderstanding of Asia.Sadly, this kind of terrible ignorance may be a result of Australian education. The report says, “Only a small proportion of Year 12 students study anything about Asia in the subjects of history, literature, geography, economics, politics and the arts under existing state-based curriculums.”Worse, only 5 per cent of each Australian groups study any kind of Asian language.Learning Asian languages would open windows to Asian cultural and political sensitivities. The time for Australians to think deeply about their Asian destiny has arrived. The sooner Australia adjusts to its new Asian destiny, the less painful the adjustment will prove to be.高三英语课堂练习(十七)答案1-5 ADBDC 6-10 CBACC11-15 BDBCA 16-20 ADBAC 21-25 AACDB 26-30DCBAC34-34 DCBA 35-38CBAC1. time2. My morn was one of those people. My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, "Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school--walking on my own! When the Great Depression (大萧条)hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time. Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother's words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world--Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1,759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $1 billion a year. You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.(07)71. That's one of the ways being developed by scientists experimenting with foods that trick the body into feeling full.At the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, England, food expert Peter Wilde and his colleagues are developing foods that slow down the digestive system, which then sends a signal to the brain that stops appetite. "That fools you into thinking you've eaten far too much when you really haven't," said Wilde. From his studies on fat digestion, he said it should be possible to make foods, from bread to yoghurt, that make it easier to diet. While the research is still in its early stages, Wilde's approach to controlling appetite is one that some doctors say could be a key to solving the problem of being fleshy."Being able to switch off appetite would be a big help for people having trouble losing weight," said Steve Bloom, a professor of investigative medicine at London's Imperial College, who is not connected to Wilde's research. Bloom said that regulating appetite through foods is theoretically possible. But Bloom warned that controlling appetite may be very challenging. "The body has lots of things to prevent its regulatory systems from being tricked," he said. Wilde's research makes use of the body's ways of digesting fat. Fat normally gets broken down in the first part of the small intestines (肠道). When you eat a high-fat meal, however, the body can only digest the fat entirely further down in the intestines, which then causes the bodyto produce a kind of chemical to stop the appetite.Wilde's approach copies what happens with a high-fat meal. He coats fat droplets (滴) in foods with modified proteins from plants, so it takes longer for the chemical that breaks down fat to reach it. That means that the fat isn't digested until it hits the far reaches of the intestines. At that point, intestinal cells send a signal telling the brain it's full. Even though the body hasn't had a high-fat meal, it stops the appetite as if it has. If the fat had been digested earlier in the intestines, no such signal would be sent.76. According to Wilde's research, what could people do if they want to lose weight? A. Eat more bread and yoghurt.B. Trick the body by eating nothing.C. Have foods with fat droplets coated.D. Control their digestive system strictly.77. The underlined word "being fleshy" in Para. 2 most probably means"___________".A. being too fatB. eating too much foodC. stopping appetiteD. being unhealthy78. What can be inferred about Professor Bloom's opinion towards Wilde's approach?A. It won't work since the body's regulatory systems will never be tricked.B. It is sure to switch off the appetite of people with a weight problem.C. It sounds terrible because regulating appetite through foods is not practical at all.D. It's not that easy to trick the body so more research should be done.79. Which of the following is TRUE about Wilde's approach?A. A kind of chemical is added to make a high-fat meal less fatty.B. Fat is digested earlier and the body sends a signal telling the brain it's full.C. Fat won't get broken down in the first part of the small intestines.D. The chemical that breaks down fat will not reach the fat.80. The passage is written to___________.A. give advice on how to stop eating high-fat mealsB. introduce a research on controlling appetiteC. discuss the argument between two professorsD. show different ways to trick the bodyCMen cannot manufacture blood as efficiently as women can. This makes surgery riskier for men. Men also need more oxygen because they do not breathe as often as women. But men breathe more deeply and this exposes them to another risk. When the air is polluted, they draw more of it into their lungs.Men's bones are larger than women's and they are arranged somewhatdifferently. The female walk that wins so many whistles is a matter of bone structure. Men have broader shoulders and a narrower pelvis (骨盆) which enables them to stride (大踏步走) out with no waste motion.A women's wider pelvis, designed for childbearing, forces her to put more movement into each step she takes with the result that she displays a bit of a jiggle and sway as she walks. If you think a man is brave because he climbs a ladder to clean out the roof gutters (排水槽), don't forget that it is easier for him than for a woman. The angle at which a woman's thigh (大腿) is joined to her knees makes climbing awkward for her, whether it is a ladder or a mountain that she is tackling.A man's skin is thicker than a woman's and not nearly as soft. The thickness prevents the sun's radiation from getting through, which is why men wrinkle less than women do.Women have a thin layer of fat just under the skin and there is a plus to this greater fat reserve. It acts as an invisible fur coat to keep a woman warmer in the winter.Women also stay cooler in summer. The fat layer helps prevent them feeling hot.Men's fat is distributed differently. And they do not have that layer of it underneath the skin. In fact, they have considerably less fat than women and more lean mass. As a result, 41% of a man's body is muscle compared to 30% of a woman's body.81. Which of the following is one of men's weaknesses according to the passage?A. Breathing more deeply.B. Having larger bones.C. Having thicker skin.D. Having more lean mass.82. What does the author mean by saying "The female walk that wins so many whistles is a matter of bone structure" in Paragraph 2?A. While walking, women often make some noise because of their bonestructure. B. As a matter of fact, women walk very slowly and are often laughed at.C. Different bone structure makes women walk not so beautifully.D. Women walk so admirably due to their bone structure.83. One advantage of women's fat layer under the skin is that______.A. it serves as an invisible fur coat in summerB. it helps them resist heat in summerC. it helps prevent the sun's radiation from getting throughD. it makes them look more gentle and attractive84. It can be learned from the passage that_________.A. men may take more risks than women when they are operated uponB. women climb Iadders awkwardly because they go up at a wrong angleC. men have fewer wrinkles because they have less fat than womenD. 30% of a woman's body is made up of fat and muscle85. The purpose of the passage is________.A. to prove that men are stronger than womenB. to tell some differences between men and womenC. to indicate that no one is perfect in the worldD. to show that women are not always weakDSports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.The shoes--named Square Eyes--contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day's efforts. The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University to London, UK. "We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out," she says. "And I wanted to tackle that with my design." Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.Existing pedometers (计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. "It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort," she says. "That was one of my main design considerations." (07)86. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to_____.A. keep a record of the steps of the wearerB. deal with overweight among teenagersC. enable children to resist the temptation of TVD. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs87. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?A. They regulate a child's evening TV viewing time.B. They determine a child's daily pocket money.C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.D. They contain information of the receiver.88. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?A. The exact number of steps to be taken.B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.89. Compared with other similar products, the new design______.A. makes it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheatB. counts the wearer's steps through shakingC. records the sudden movement of the wearerD. sends teenagers' health data to the receiver90. When Lily finds out it's made right there in a farmhouse, they go there and ask for help. The good-hearted August who runs a successful company, offers them the honeycomb to live in. It is situated between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Footbridge in Lambeth and adjacent to (比邻) Old Country Building. Donating one's time and services is very much a part of the American way of life. Most charitable activities are organized by churches and groups around the nation and even encouraged by the government. The helping hand is extended to the poor, the homeless and the disabled. Some people work to teach youngsters how to read. Others open up soup kitchens to feed the homeless. Volunteers also take care of the disabled by making reading tapes for the blind and working in orphanages(孤儿院)to help children without parents.High school students are often encouraged to become volunteers and many school club activities center around volunteer services. Students may work with disabled children during a summer program,or participate in a club activity which helps to bring meal to senior citizens who are shut-ins. With their sense of idealism(理想主义)students are often eager to donate their spare time. They see such activities as a way of becoming involved in the community and the adult-world. Social action for them becomes as important as their academic studies. In a like manner, throughout the year, fund raising drives are also conducted by schools and community groups to raise money for a worthy cause. They may respond to a recent earthquake in a foreign country,a flood somewhere within their own,or another natural disaster which has left people destitute and homeless. They may organize drives to collect food, clothing and medicines to serve an immediate need. Today even the Halloween custom of “trick or treat” has become an occasion to collect money for a charitable cause. This call to help those less fortunate than themselves arises from the humble origins of the American nation. Those immigrants who were poor and downtrodden(受压迫的)becamedependent on the kindness of their neighbors to make a new life for themselves.American volunteers work throughout the world in less developed countries. For many centuries, being thin meant that you were ugly and poor---you didn’t have enough food to eat and you spent your days working in the fields. Being full-figured,on the other hand, was a symbol of_______. Today, while plenty of experts will point out that pictures of models and famous people are beautified and Barbie has an impossible-to-achieve figure, both men and women seek to be thin, sometimes through disordered eating ,unhealthy amounts of exercise and operation.[3] Make-up is another thing to which many women today are addicted. Ancient Egyptians,Greeks and Romans loved make-up. However, these early civilizations were exceptions to the rule, as make-up was mostly avoided in the centuries following. Queen Victoria went so far as to call all make-up rulgar(粗俗的)in a public speech, and modesty was the leading beauty trend for many years. But thanks to the introduction of movies, make-up came back in a big way.Today, it is a billion-dollar industry.[4]Though beauty might seem like a visual thing, smells also play a big role. Just imagine this: if a supermodel didn’t shower for months at a time, would we still consider her beautiful? Being clean is essential for anyone to be considered beautiful, but that would certainly surprise the generations of people who never bathed. They were concerned that wearing no clothes was immoral and the devil(魔鬼)would catch them during their bath. Now many of us can hardly go a day without taking a shower or bath. Additionally,in an effort of appearing more attractive, many of us try to smell like baby powder, flowers and fruits with the help of perfume.71. The BBC English Dictionary contains background information on 1,000 people and places prominent in the news since 1988; the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictio nary: Encyclopedic Edition is the OALD plus encyclopedic entries; the Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture is the LDOCE plus cultural information. The key fact is that all three dictionaries can be seen to have a distinctly “cultural” as well as language learning content. That being said, the way in which they approach the cultural element is not identical, making direct comparisons between the three difficult. While there is some common ground between the encyclopedic/cultural entries for the Oxford and Longman dictionaries, there is a clear difference. Oxford lays claim to being encyclopedic on content whereas Longman distinctly concentrates on the language and culture of the English speaking world. The Oxford dictionary can therefore stand more vigorous scrutiny(审查) for cultural bias than the Longman publication because the latter does not hesitate about viewing the rest of the world from the cultural perspectives of the English-speaking world. The cultural objectives of the BBC dictionary are in turn more distinct still. Based on an analysis of over 70 million words recorded from the BBC World Service and National Public Radio of Washington over a period of four years, their 1,000 brief encyclopedic entries are based on people and places that have featured in the news recently. The intended user they have in mind is a regular listener to the World Service who will have a reasonable standard of English and a developed skill in listening comprehension. In reality, though, the BBC dictionary will be purchased by a far wider range of language learners, as will the other two dictionaries. We will be faced with a situation where many of the users of these dictionaries will at the very least have distinct socio-cultural perspectives and may have world views which are totally opposed and even hostile to those of the West. Advanced learners from this kind of background will not only evaluate a dictionary on how user-friendly it is but will also have definite views about the scope and appropriateness of the various socio-cultural entries.31. What feature sets apart the three dictionaries discussed in the passage from traditional ones?A. The combination of two dictionaries into one.B. The new approach to defining words.C. The inclusion of cultural content.D. The increase in the number of entries.32. The Longman dictionary is more likely to be criticized for cultural prejudice because__________.A. its scope of cultural entries goes beyond the culture of the English-speaking worldB. it pays little attention to the cultural content of the non-English-speaking countriesC. it views the world purely from the standpoint of the English-speaking peopleD. it fails to distinguish language from culture in its encyclopedic entries33. It is implied in the last paragraph that, in approaching socio-cultural content in a dictionary, social thought should be given to _________.A. the language levels of its usersB. the number of its prospective purchasersC. the different tastes of its usersD. the various cultural backgrounds of its usersBUntil recently, women in advertisements wore one of three things—an apron, an attractive dress or a frown. Although that is now changing, many women still feel angry about offending advertisements. “This ad degrades women.” t hey protested. Why does this sort of advertising exist? How can advertisers and ad agencies still produce, sometimes, after months of research, advertising that offends the consumer? The ASA, the body which deals with complaints about print media, is carrying out research into how women feel about the way they are pictured in advertisements. Its conclusions are likely to be what the advertising industry already knows: although women are often annoyed by the ads, few feel strong enough to complain.Women are not the only victims of poor and boring stereotypes(老套) in many TV commercials. Men are seen either as useless, childish fools who are unable to perform the simplest household tasks, or as inconsiderate fellows, always on the lookout for an escape to the pub. But it is women who seem to suffer more from the industry’s inability to put people into an authentic present-day situation. Yet according to Emma Bennett, director of a London advertising agency, women are not aggressive or extremely angry about those stereotypes and sexist advertising. “They just find it annoying or tiresome.”She says that it is not advertising’s use of the housewife role that bothers women, but the way in which it is handled. “The most important thing is the advertisement’s tone of voice. Women hate being insincerely praised or given desperately down-to-earth common-sense advice.”In the end, the responsibility for good advertising must be shared between the advertiser, the advertising agency and the consumer. Advertising does not set trends but it reflects them. It is up to the consumer to tell advertisers where they fail, and the process of change will remain slow until people on the receiving end take the business seriously and make their feelings known.34. Despite recent changes in attitudes, some advertisements still fail to __________.A. change women’s opinions of themselvesB. show any understanding of consumers’ feelingsC. persuade the public to buy certain productsD. meet the needs of the advertising industry35. According to the writer, the commonest fault of present-day advertising is to __________.A. condemn the role of the housewifeB. ignore protests about advertisementsC. present a misleading image of womenD. picture the activities of men wrongly36. Emma Bennett suggests that advertisement ought to __________.A. give further emphasis to practical adviceB. change their style rather than their contentC. use male images instead of female onesD. sing higher praise for women than before37. We can learn from the passage that advertising industry should __________.A. take its job more eagerlyB. do more pioneering workC. take notice of the public opinionD. concentrate on the products advertised四、任务型阅读Back to School: Why Grit (毅力) Is More Important than Good Grades? The back-to-school season is upon us, and once again, parents all over the country haveloaded their kids’ backpacks up with snack packs and school supplies. It’s a good moment to reflect on what else we should be giving our kids as they head off to school.American parents are feeling particularly anxious about that question this year. The educational process feels more than ever like a race, one that starts in pre-preschool and does n’t end until your child is admitted to the perfect college. Most parents are more worried than they need to be about their children’s grades, test scores and IQ. And what we don’t think about enough is how to help our children build their character—how to help them develop skills like perseverance, grit, optimism, conscientiousness, and self-control, which together do more to determine success than S.A.T. scores or I.Q.There is growing evidence that our anxiety about our children’s school performance may actually be holding them back from learning some of these valuable skills. If you’re concerned only with a child’s G.P.A., then you will likely choose to minimize the challenges th e child faces in school. With real challenge comes the risk of real failure. And in a competitive academic environment, the idea of failure can be very scary, to students and parents alike. But experiencing failure is a critical part of building character. Recent research by a team of psychologists found that adults who had experienced little or no failure growing up were actually less happy and confident than those who had experienced a few significant setbacks in childhood. “Overcoming those obstacles,” the researchers assumed, “could teach effective coping skills, help engage social support networks, create a sense of mastery over past adversity, and foster beliefs in the ability to cope successfully in the future.”By contrast, when we protect our children from every possible failure—when we call their teachers to get an extensi on on a paper; when we urge them to choose only those subjects they’re good at—we are denying them those same character-building experiences. As the psychologists Madeline Levine and Dan Kindlon have written, that can lead to difficulties in adolescence and young adulthood, when overprotected young people finally confront real problems on their own and don’t know how to overcome them.In the classroom and outside of it, American parents need to encourage children to take chances, to challenge themselves, to risk failure. In the meantime, giving our kids room to fail高三英语课堂练习(四十四)参考答案1-10 BDCCC DADCA11-30 ABCBD BCAAC CBACA DDBDB31-37 CCD BCBC1. throughout/across/around2. attach3. view/opinion/viewpoint4. research5. discourage/prevent/stop/keep6. tendency7. happier8. result9. It has been designed so that the wings fold up automatically; and it takes just 15 seconds to switch between flying and driving. With its wings fully open and the propeller (螺旋桨)spinning, it can take off from any airfield.Flying cars are quicker than traditional ones for travelling from city to city, and they can run on ordinary fuel. Another big advantage is that they are cool, like something you would see in an action film. At the moment, however, the flying car‟s wheels are illegal to leave the ground. That is not because of technical reasons or problems with the design. It is because the various road and aircraft authorities simply cannot agree on whether it is a car or a plane.“The government and the authorities have never thought seriously about a flying car, says Alan Price, the president of the company that has developed it. “I wanted a car that could fly and drive, but it is difficult to find an organization prepared to insure the vehicle against accidents.Nevertheless, the company hopes to produce and deliver its first flying car soon. The company already has orders for 40 of them. The majority the potential customers are older and some are retired. There have even been orders from some people who have no pilot‟s license. The flying car will cost around $ 200,000. “For an airplane, that‟s a very reasonable price, but for a car, it‟s quite expensive,” explains Alan. “But it just is not possible to make a $ 10,000 flying car yet.”This latest means of transport will not become a mass-market item in the near future, but in the long term it has the potential to change the way you travel. It will become no more expensive than driving your car on the motorway. Travel time could be reduced by more than half.So the next time you are told to fasten your seat belt, it may be to prepare for take-off.31. We know from the passage that the flying car ______.A. has to run on special fuelB. will replace traditional planesC. is popular with the richD. can shift between two forms32. The flying car is presently forbidden to take off because ______.A. many people think driving it not very safeB. it‟s hard to decide whether it‟s a car or a planeC. the government and the authorities don‟t accept itD. there are still some technical problems to be solved33. We can learn from the passage that ______.A. few people will be able to afford a flying carB. flying cars may share the market in the futureC. traffic jams will disappear because of flying carsD. driving a flying car doesn‟t require a pilot‟s licenseBGlobal Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But they can also cause a lot of problems, sending you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm, Sweden. The center studies human-computer interaction, or HCI, especially communications involving wireless devices. We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay.Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn‟t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they had put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of …garbage in garbage out‟“.Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment.Barry Brown: “One problem with many GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it‟s going to the wrong place.”Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people‟s cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.”Barry Brown: “One of the things that struck us, perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you‟re doing when you use a GPS. There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong.”Barry Brown says this goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational (导航) skills.“The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS” lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.34. What is the best title for this passage?A. Is GPS system reliable to use?B. What is the use of GPS?C. How to make the most of GPS?D. Blame! GPS or Passengers?35. What is the implication of the underlined part?A. GPS is just a garbage device.B. GPS will not correct human errors.C. GPS adjusts your wrong destination.D. GPS is just as smart as human beings.36. Which is NOT mentioned as a GPS shortcoming in the passage?A. Small screen.B. Timing of commands.C. Outdated maps.D. Dear cameras GPS uses.37. According to the passage, people commonly believe that .A. you have to know where to go when using GPSB. you need to have new competencies to use GPS wellC. GPS is proper for drivers with little sense of directionD. GPS is fit for people having good understanding of maps四、任务型阅读The college search doesn‟t have to begin and end with the name-brand schools. There‟re many schools out there to choose from — some known and some less known, all worthy of yourattention. To find the school that works for you, you should start with who you are and why you‟re going to college. What are you good at and what are you interested in? What are your weaknesses? What do you want out of life? Are you socially self-sufficient or do you need warm, familial support? Talk with your family, friends and teachers as you ask these questions. The people who know you best can help you the most with these important issues.Remember that a name-brand college won‟t guarantee your success. Think about the people in your life who have achieved great success and find out where they went to college. You‟ll likely find success in life has less to do with the choice of college than with the experiences and opportunities while in college. Employers are looking for outstanding skills and experience, not college background. As you search for colleges, ask about graduate students, and you‟ll find many colleges that are better than name-brand ones. You don‟t need to pick a major (专业) to pick a college. Very few high school students have enough information or experience to choose a major. You need the variety and depth of college coursework to determine your interest and major. Most college students change their minds two or three times before they settle on a major, and they can still graduate in four years! Being undecided is a good thing and will leave you open to more academic experiences. If you make the assumption that you cannot afford college based on the sticker price (标价) of tuition, you‟ll miss out. It‟s difficult to talk about money, but if you investigate all the options and ask for help and advice, you‟ll find affordable choices. Online resources, as well as financial aid workshops sponsored by high schools in local communities, are widely available to get you started. Investigate early and ask for help. The most important factor in choosing a college is fit. Finding a good fit requires time and thoughtfulness. You can visit college websites and learn about what events take place, who visits as a guest speaker, and how to get in touch with current students and teachers. If you visit the campus, try to sit in on classes, eat in the dining hall and hang around in the student center. That will help you imagine yourself as a part of the community. Talk to a few students and ask if they would make the same college choice if they had to do it again. One of the basic ways we get happy is by meeting our goals, as opposed to the setbacks and anger we feel when we do not. Setting goals and meeting them might seem an easy way to happiness. The problem is that goals which are too easy are not that rewarding. Our brains want us to improve and grow and make us happy only when we deserve it.Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi uses the term “flow” for the state we get into when we are buried in something enjoyable, where time seems to fly by. He also describes a person with “autotelic personality” as someone who sets themselves challenging but achievable goals. An important part of finding flow is letting go of the self. When you are absorbed in doing something, you lose track of your sense of identity. This can be particularly scary for those who are very selffocused and abnormally, the selfish often have difficulty finding happiness. There is also a curious “workplay” paradox(矛盾),where people at work are dreaming of holidays, yet sitting on the beach is quickly boring. Asked about when they were happiest, many people will describe times at work when they achieved significant goals.Another critical reason for seeking challenge is to keep the brain active and learning. After the age of about 25, the brain literally becomes increasingly set in its ways, so learning and thinking about new things becomes harder. This is why the personality of many people remains unchanged during adulthood. Unless they keep taking on challenges, which takes a lot of practice, repetition and persistence to fit in the new thinking.Changes in the way of thinking need challenge, especially energetic challenge. This is easier if your body is in good shape and fed well. It takes good nutrients, exercise and rest to help develop new ones.1.What kind of goals should be set if you want to get happy?A.Goals that can improve your brains. B.Goals that can be met when you feel happy.C.Goals that don't need much effort to reach. D.Goals that are kind of difficult but achievable.2. What will you do in a flow state according to this text?A.Forget yourself and focused. B.Focus more on yourself.C.Forget what you are doing. D.Feel challenged and scary.3. Why does it become harder for an adult over 25 to learn new things?A.His brain becomes more active. B.He loses courage to take challenge. C.His brain becomes set in its own way. D.He becomes slow in learning new things.4. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “ones” in the last paragraph? A.Healthier bodies. B.Ways of thinking.C.Challenges one faces. D.Nutrients the body needs.

Joe Cordell is one of thousands around the world who believe they’ve found the key to an extreme long life—calorie restriction leads to a longer, healthier life.At 59 Joe weighs 130 pounds. He may not look like a person who needs to count calories, butas part of his life extension program, he inspects every mouth of food that passes through his system.Every day for the past seven years, Joe has limited himself to about 1,950 calories. He believes that by eating less and restricting his caloric intake, he will trigger a genetic switch that slows the aging process.Joe doesn’t take away himself of food. Instead, the then 52-year-old father filled up on natural fruits, vegetables and lean proteins(瘦蛋白) that were packed with necessary vitamins and nutrients. “Whenever you are thinking about calorie restriction, you should continually think about getting the most nutritional amount per calorie,” Joe says.In keeping with this principle, Joe starts every morning with three apples…but he only eat sthe peels. “Most of the fiber is in the peel, and more importantly, most of the nutrients are in the peel,” he says.“It is important to eat some nuts with breakfast so that you do take in some fat, some healthy fats,” he says. “I think it helps the absorption of the nutrients, and it is very filling.”For lunch, Joe usually eats a large salad, loaded with vegetables. At dinnertime, he and hisfamily enjoy lean meat or fish and more vegetables. When Joe started practicing calorie restriction, he weighed 175 pounds. Since then, he has lost 45 pounds, and he says he hasn’t had a cold in seven years. Though he is in his “golden years”, researchers studying Joe say he has the body of a 20-year-old athlete.31. According to Joe, the appropriate fat intake may help __________.A. people lose weightB. feel always fullC. the absorption of the nutrientsD. people to live longer32. What can we learn about Joe since he started the calorie restriction program?A. Joe counts the amount of every meal.B. Joe has never had a cold.C. Joe eats three apples every morning.D. Joe has a large salad with vegetables for dinner.33. Th e underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 7 can probably be replaced by __________.A. turn onB. break downC. take upD. cut off34. According to the passage, the extreme life extension refers to __________.A. living very long even sickB. how to make people lead a happy lifeC. living long and having a healthy bodyD. how to arrange our foods every dayBIf you know exactly what you want, the best route to a job is to get specialized training. A recent survey shows that companies like graduates in such fields as business and health care who can go to work immediately with very little on-the-job training. That’s especially true of booming fields that are challenging for workers. At Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration, for example, bachelor’s degree graduates get an average of four or five job offers with salaries ranging from the high teens to the low 20s and plenty of chances for rapid advancement. Large companies, especially, like a background of formal education coupled with work experience. But in the long run, too much specialization doesn’t pay off. Business, which has been flooded with MBAs, no longer considers the degree an automatic stamp of approval. The MBA may open doors and command a higher salary initially, but the impact of a degree washes out after five years. As further evidence of the erosion(侵蚀) of corporate(公司的) faith in specialized degrees, Michigan Sta te’s Scheetz cites a pattern in corporate hiring practices, although companies tend to take on specialists as new hires, they often seek out generalists for middle and upper-level management. “They want someone who isn’t constrained(限制) by nuts and bolts to look at the big picture.” says Scheetz. This sounds suspiciously like a formal statement that you approve of the liberal-arts graduate. Time and again labor-market analysts mention a need for talents that liberal-arts majors are assumed to have: writing and communication skills, organizational skills, open-mindedness and adaptability, and the ability to analyze and solve problems, David Birch claims he does not hire anybody with an MBA or an engineering degree, “I hire only liberal-arts people because they have a less-than-canned way of doing things.” says Birch. Liberal-arts means an academically thorough and strict program that includes literature, history, mathematics, economics, science, human behavior—plus a computer course or two. With that under your belt, you can feel free to specialize, “A liberal-arts degree coupled with an MBA or some other technical training is a very good combination in the marketplace,” says Scheetz.35. What kinds of people are in high demand on the job market?A. Studen ts with a bachelor’s degree in humanities.B. People with an MBA degree from top universities.C. People with formal schooling plus work experience.D. People with special training in engineering.36. So if we want to study the history of China in the sixth century AD, we look at the writings of the people who lived then. They are called primary sources because they tell us what it was like to live then. People at a much later date who write about the same events are called secondary sources. For example, when we read the original writings of Jia Sixie on agriculture, we are reading a primary source; when we read about Jia Sixie in our textbooks we are reading a secondary source because the passage was written about him and his ideas many years after he died. When we make news we use primary and secondary sources. We can see this most clearly in TV programmes. As we watch the news on TV, the person presenting the programme in the studio is the secondary source (because he tells us about the news) and the reporter in Iraq or Washington is the primary source (because he is telling us about what is actually happening on the scene). Without these reporters acting as primary sources, you would never find out what really happened in a war, earthquake, sports meeting, concert or festival. These reporters explain what is happening so we have a clearer idea of what is going on there. They often take photographers with them who act as primary sources by giving pictures of events. In a newspaper the position is different because these two roles are often combined. This means a reporter who investigates a story may be the same person who writes it. If this happens, the reporter is both the primary and the secondary source. But the photographer who works with him/her is still a primary source. One of the reasons that it is important to separate primary and secondary sources is that they help us to decide what is a fact and what is an opinion. A fact is something that everybody agrees has happened. An opinion is somebody’s idea of what happened. So facts and opinions are often高三英语课堂练习(五十三)参考答案一、单项选择BBDCA CBDAB二、完形填空BCDAA CDBDB ABBCD CABCD三、阅读理解CBAC CBAA四、任务型阅读:1. Primary2. based3. presenter4. scene/spot5. writes6. working7. words8. true9. My art helps me find answers,or at least deal with some of the worrying realities of the modern day.My trips into Baghdad standing for peace caused huge stress to my family and me. It took a few years before I was able to come to accept that whole experience and work out how to continue to work as an artist. I put my energy into creating natural art facilities that awoke a sense of peace in myself and others. I set up my first project in a large field, using a simple parent-child design. I later did two similar, small works, one in Scotland and the other in Baghdad.I wanted to create something more permanent(永恒的),however, and so I created the Peace Image in Hudson's Hope. It can't be seen very well on the ground these days, because the locals just loved riding over the large piles of dirt. I don't mind that at all. The Peace Image still turns up well from the air and on Google Maps though. For more than 50 years now, I've felt pleased to be able to express myself through my art. In the autumn of 2013,I was encouraged to lead the creation of a Peace Garden art project at Woodwynn Farms in Central Saanich. After everything we had been through, it was such a gift to work closely with my wife, Elizabeth Welburn, a talented artist. It was and still is a labour of love.1.
