第二部分阅读(共两节,满分50分)

The writers of murder stories go to a great deal of trouble to keep us guessing right up to the end. In actual fact, people often behave more strangely in real life than they do in stories.

The following advertisement once appeared in a local newspaper: "An opportunity to earn $250 in a few minutes. A man willing to take chances is wanted for an out-of-the-ordinary job which can be performed only once." A reader found this offer very generous and applied to the advertiser, but being a bit suspicious, he gave a false name. Soon afterwards, he received a reply. Enclosed in the envelope was a typed note instructing him to ring a certain number if he was still interested. He did so and learned on the telephone that the advertiser wanted him "to get rid of somebody" and would discuss it more fully with him the next day. But the man told the police and from then on acted under their instructions.

The police saw the two men met and watched them as they drove away together. In the car the advertiser came to the point at once: he told the man he wanted him to shoot his wife. The reason he gave was that he was suffering from an incurable disease and wanted to live in a warmer country, but his wife objected to this. Giving the man some money, the advertiser told him to buy a gun and warned him to be careful of the dog which, though it would not bite, might attract attention. He also gave him a photograph of his wife so that he would be able to recognize her,After that, the advertiser suggested that the man should "do the job" next morning. Meanwhile,he would prepare his wife by telling her that a young man was going to call. After the murder, they would meet again outside a railway station and the money would be paid as arranged. The second meeting never took place, for the advertiser was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with attempting to persuade someone to murder his wife.

A homeless man in Las Vegas who had been living on the streets and had not seen his six children for nearly 25 years has been reunited with his daughter thanks to modern technology and the kindness of strangers.

Jimmy Francis was outside a Firehouse Subs shop earlier this month when he was spotted by a local realtor Jim Snyder, as he was going in to pick up his dinner. When Snyder saw Francis struggling in the cold weather, he, with the help of Firehouse employees, bought the man a sandwich and gave him some cash.

After Snyder got home his thoughts stayed with Francis, left out in the cold. “He was shaking

Over coffee and a warm meal, Snyder, himself a father of five children and step-children, learned that Francis had not seen his six children for over two decades after a divorce. He was particularly torn, Snyder says, over not seeing his only daughter, Natalie.

“He told me he had colon cancer in 2010 and wasn?t expected to live and because of that experience, the one thing cons tantly in his mind is that he wants to be reunited with his children,” Snyder said.

The Snyders took down the names and birth dates of Francis?s children and used social media to search for them.

The couple found Natalie Francis, now living in Northern California and herself a grandmother, on Facebook and sent her a message. Less than one hour later, they had a response.

“The message just said, …Oh my God. This is my dad. Is he okay??” Snyder recalled.

Just days later the couple brought Francis, living temporarily with an acquaintance, back to their home for a Skype call with his daughter.

NEW YORK—Australian mining enterpriser Clive Palmer on Tuesday unveiled(公布)blueprints for TitanicⅡ, a modern copy of the doomed ocean liner, although he didn?t call the ship unsinkable any more.

The ship will largely recreate the design and decoration of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York.

The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented from mingling(混杂), as in 1912, Palmer said. “I?m not too superstitious(迷信的). ”Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship best-known for sinking was tempting fate.

White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkab le. About 1, 500 people died on Titanic?s maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, refused to make a similar boast.

“Anything will sink if you put a hole in it, ”Palmer said. “I think it would be very cavalier to say it. ”

Unlike the original, TitanicⅡ will have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the “safest cruise ship in the world”.

Palmer refused to answer questions about the project?s cost. Although the Titanic was the world?s largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of today?s modern cruise ships.

“It?s not about the money, ”Palmer said. “I?ve got enough money for it. I think that?s all that matters. ”

Forbes estimated Palmer?s net worth to be $795 million in 2012. He describes himself as a

billionaire.

TitanicⅡwill be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which has already built four ore carriers for Palmer?s mining business, he said. The contract to build TitanicⅡ has not yet been signed, Palmer said.

41. What?s the meaning of the underlined wor d “maiden” in Paragraph 4?

A. First.

B. Trial.

C. Second.

D. Last.

42. What can be inferred about TitanicⅡ from the passage?

A. TitanicⅡ will have more space in its lifeboats than the Titanic.

C. TitanicⅡ will allow different classes of passengers to mingle.

D. TitanicⅡ will be a real unsinkable cruise ship.

A. 1, 500 people died on Titanic?s maiden voyage in 1912.

B. The Titanic collided with an iceberg in the South Pacific.

C. The Titanic was equipped with air conditioning.

D. The Titanic was the world?s largest ship at that time.

44. What?s the author?s purpose of writing the passage?

A. To tell us the story of the Titanic.

B. To tell us TitanicⅡ will cost a lot of money.

C. To tell us about the future TitanicⅡ.

D. To tell us a Chinese Shipyard will build TitanicⅡ.

45. What?s the best title of the passage?

According to the passage, the author was addicted to playing mobile phone and it affected his normal life. However, Stop Phubbing campaign helped him realized the importance of the real life and he could use phone reasonably.

Nowadays, we can see many people are watching their mobile phones in subway, restaurants, elevators, roads and so on. There is no denying that people who like the mobile phone are concerned about its attractive functions. Phubbers can?t stop sending messages, surfing on the Internet, listening to music and even taking photos by using the mobile phone. Moreover, some people have less time to relax themselves. They make use of the time when they are on the way to school or other places to play mobile games.

However, phubbing disturbs not only our study but also our life. On the one hand, phubbers waste lots of time playing cell phone games and sending messages, particularly in class. Other people also complain they are disturbed when phones ring in classrooms. On the other hand, it can

lead to health problems. For instance, using a mobile phone on the sofa can cause back and neck pain.

As far as I am concerned, it?s high time that we threw away the phone and raised our heads up .Do cherish everything around us and appreciate the scenery ahead of us. What?s more, we should do more exercises and take part in real-life activities. In a word, only when we use the phone reaso nably, can we realize the happiness of life.

Answer 1:I love having such a big family. There were many sweet memories about those years growing up with my brothers and sisters. We played games together and went to school together and it was our family tradition to give everybody a surprise on his or her birthday. But at times, it could be a little crowded as we all live together in a small house when we were young. Question 2: What was the most difficult part?/ What was the hardest part?/ What was the toughest part?/ What was the most difficult thing?/ What was the hardest thing?/ What was the toughest thing? Answer 2: I think it was that we didn’t have enough money to make sure that everybody ate well and dressed well. My elder brothers and sisters had a little tougher life than we did, because they had to work a lot to help with the family income. Question 3: Are younger children luckier than the elder children?/ Are younger children more fortunate than the elder children? Answer 3: Yes. As for the elder children, they have to help support the family and look after the younger ones. So usually, they have more responsibilities. 五答部分: Question 1: Where did Tom spend his holiday?
