Passage One

Questions 33 to 37 are based on the following passage.

Want to see a good film – without leaving the house? Well, just switch on the television. That’s fine for most of us, but people couldn’t do so 20 or 30 years age. A visit to the cinema was “an evening out,”a film was something special. Young people still go to the cinema often. Children watch a lot of television. Films and film stars are a strong force in our lives. So it is surprising how little film education there is in schools. Why don’t more children learn how films are made, and why they are made? The best film education is when children make a film of their own.

This is not too difficult. Three things are important –the cost, the idea of the film, and organization. A 4-minute film can cost as little asよ10. Schools can hire the necessary equipment. They can also borrow films that other children have made. This helps them to see what is possible in a short film. Children will be making the film, so the main ideas for the film must come form them. When these have been agreed, the organization begins. Someone must Write the film and plan the filming. Some children will be actors, others camera men, lighting men, technicians and so on. They all have to practice a lot before the film itself is made. They learn a great deal about the technical problems of films, and about themselves.

33. A film was once something special because ________.

B) the important things in making films

C) why and how to make films in schools

D) whether to offer children film education

37. We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A) children can benefit a lot from making films

B) it is necessary for children to go to the cinema

C) children spend too much time watching TV

D) it is difficult for children to make films of their own

Passage Two

Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.

What is happening in our weather? Of course we have never been able to predict exactly what the weather will be like, but now strange weather patterns are seriously affecting many parts of the world. For example, droughts (旱灾) in Mexico and Brazil have recently caused great crop losses and in the United States they have even had to make their own snow for the Winter Olympics!

Scientists have found that the cause of this strange weather is that the air circulation pattern has changed and is now more variable than earlier in the twentieth century. This means that different regions of the world get long spells (持续时间) of the same type of weather, whether hot , cold, wet or windy.

However, weather experts have different views about why this has happened. One theory is that the temperature of the sea has increased. Another is that man’s activities on earth have disturbed the balance of nature.

Whatever the cause, the economics of many countries in the world depend upon the weather. And until we know exactly what effect man’s activities are having on the weather, we cannot make changes which might help. So for the moment the only answer is …wait and see !

38. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the first paragraph?

B) having harmful effects on D) producing desired effects on

41. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.

A) weather patterns are similar in different regions of the world

B) the air circulation pattern remains unchanged in the last century

C) our weather depends on the changes in the air circulation pattern

D) it is possible to predict weather patterns over a long period of time

42. It can be learned from this passage that ________.

A) scientists have similar opinions about the changing weather

B) no one is sure about the cause of the changing weather

C) cutting down forests has affected the climate

D) the weather will become worse in the future

Passage Three

Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.

The World Bank is one of the largest suppliers of development assistance. Its main goal is to improve living conditions for poor people throughout the world. Last year, it provided more than seventeen-thousand-million dollars in loans to developing countries to help end poverty.

The money went to efforts like debt reduction for some of the poorest countries in the world. That program was designed to increase debt assistance and provide it faster than in the past. As a result, twenty-three countries received debt assistance last year as compared to seven countries the year before.

The World Bank does more than just provide loans, however. It believes that continued poverty reduction

comes from investing in the people of a country – especially through education and health programs.

The World Bank employs engineers, economists, public policy experts and social scientists to create these kinds of programs. These professionals also provide developing countries with the necessary technical help to carry out the programs.

The Bank has helped to make great progress in developing nations, where life expectancy (寿命) has increased and baby and child deaths have decreased, and more adults now can read than in the past.

However, protesters have held large demonstrations at recent World Band meetings. Opponents say Bank programs make industrial nations richer and developing nations poorer. Others say the organization’s activities result in environmental damage.

43. The World Bank aims mainly at ________.

A) helping poor countries better their living conditions

B) becoming the largest supplier of development assistance

C) paying debts for some of the poorest countries in the world

D) providing loans for developing countries in order to make profits

44. Last year the World Bank offered debt assistance to ________.

A) fewer poor countries C) more rich countries

B) fewer rich countries D) more poor countries

45. Which of the following is probably NOT the way that the World Bank helps a country?

A) Creating health programs. C) Educating the people

B) Providing technical help D) Making profits in the country.

46. According to the passage, opponents criticize the World Band because ________.

A) it has helped the rich countries a great deal

B) it has cared too much about the poor countries

C) it has widened the economic gaps between rich and poor countries

D) it has caused most of the world environmental pollution

47. This passage is manly about ________.

A) the management of the World Band

B) the assistance programs of the World Band

C) the achievements of the World Bank

D) the organization activities of the World Bank

Passage Four

Question 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.

He is a good observe, accurate, patient and objective and applies persistent and logical thought to the observations he makes. He utilizes the facts he observes to the fullest extent. For example, trained observes obtain a very large amount of information about a star (e.g. distance, mass, size, rate of movement etc.) mainly from the accurate analysis of the simple lines that appear in a spectrum (光谱).

He is skeptical (怀疑的) 0 he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available – and therefore rejects authority as the sole basis for truth. Scientists always check statements and make experiments carefully and objectively to prove them.

Furthermore, he is not only critical of the work of others, but also of his own, since he knows that man is the least reliable of scientific instruments and that a number of factors tend to disturb objective investigation.

Lastly, he is highly imaginative since he often has to look for relationships in data which are not only complex but also frequently incomplete. Furthermore, he needs imagination if he wants to make hypotheses(假设)of how processes work and how events take place.

These seem to be some of the ways in which a successful scientist thinks and acts.

48. What quality of a good observer is NOT mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A) Intelligence B) Patience. C) Persistence. D) Objectivity.

Passage One

Questions 33 to 37 are based on the following passage.

When two people are talking to each other, they tend to stand a specific distance apart. Each person has an invisible boundary around their body into which other people may not come. If someone goes beyond this boundary, they will feel uncomfortable and move away to increase the distance between them. (The major exception is family members and other loved ones.) This personal distance is not due to unpleasant body smell or bad breath, but because closeness lends a sense of intimacy (亲密) that is in disagreement with their relationship to the other individual.

Interestingly, the average personal distance varies from culture to culture. Americans tend to require more personal space than people in other cultures. So if you try to get too close to an American during your conversation, he or she will feel that you are "in their face" and will try to back away. Try to be aware of this; so if the person to whom you are speaking backs away a little, don't try to close the gap.

Also, try to avoid physical contact while you are speaking, since this may also lead to discomfort. Touching is a bit too intimate for nodding acquaintances (相识的人). So don't put your arm around their shoulder, touch their face, or hold their hand. Shaking hands when you initially meet or part is acceptable, but this is only momentary.

33. When two people talk to each other they

A) always stand as close to each other as possible

B) usually keep a certain distance between them

C) pay no attention to the distance between them

D) feel more comfortable if they are close enough

34. Which of the following statements' is TRUE according to the passage?

A) There is an invisible distance between two speakers.

B) Speakers keep a specific distance for the sake of their health.

C) Speakers keep a space between them because of their bad breath.'

D) Personal space isn't important when family members talk to each other.

35. According to the author, during a conversation

A) personal distance may differ indifferent cultures

B) eastern people require more personal space than western people

C) western people require more personal space .than eastern people

D) both sides feel more comfortable if they keep as close as possible

36. In a conversation with a nodding acquaintance, you'd better

A) not shake hands with him C) not touch him

B) touch him gently first D) contact .him physically

37. The best title for the passage can be

A) A Sense of Intimacy in Communication

B) An Invisible Boundary in Conversation

C) Different Cultures in Communication

D) Personal Space in Conversation

Passage Two

Questions 38 to 42 are based on the following passage.

Last year I purchased a game for my boys and I played it with them. The trouble was that everyone Won the game. We all arrived at the end together. This seems great in theory, but where's the incentive (刺激) to keep playing? We played the game twice, and it has been there gathering dust ever since.

Without a potential winner, a game or contest loses its excitement. If there's nothing to compete for, the drive to do one's best is replaced by a "What's the point" attitude. Competition is closely related to motivation (动力). It's part of human nature to be competitive; after all, survival of the fittest is the basis of evolution. A competitive spirit is the key to our success as adults, so why shouldn't we cultivate it in our children?

I'm not suggesting we set our children against each other in heated competitions in all aspects of life. We should guard against coaches who lose the spirit of good sportsmanship (运动员风格) in the heat of the game. But in the right situations, a healthy competition can teach our kids a lot about life. While games and contests illustrate the importance of drive and determination, they also teach our children how to lose. And with that comes other good lessons -- about learning from mistakes, searching for ways to improve and finding the will to try again.

38. We can learn from the first paragraph that the game bought by the author

A) proved to be unchallenging C) caused trouble for children

B) gathered dust very easily D) was played with lots of fun

39. The second paragraph mainly tells us that __

A) there is a potential winner in all games

C) humans are competitive by nature

B) only adults have a competitive spirit

D) only children have a competitive spirit

40. The word "drive" (Line2, Paragraph 2) is close in meaning to

A) strength B) energy C) ability D) spirit

41. According to the author, in a game or contest children should be encouraged

A) to obey their coaches strictly C) to develop a competitive spirit

B) to compete in all aspects of life D) to compete for nothing but a prize

42. What is important for a loser in the game?

A) Competition. C) Survival.

B) Self-determination. D) Self-improvement.

Passage Three

Questions 43 to 47 are based on the following passage.

Shortly after Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution, a lady was asked what she thought of the idea that humans and animals came down from a common ancestor (祖先). "Let us hope it is not true," she said. "And, if it is true, let us hope it does not become public knowledge."

This story is probably untrue, but it illustrates well the attitudes of the time. Today, we are more comfortable with our past. Many people accept Darwin' s view of how we came into being - that our bodies' evolved through the process of natural selection acting on our genes.

However, Darwin believed evolution was responsible for far more than just our physical characteristics. He

saw it as the major influence in shaping our psychology. Indeed, he predicted that "in the distant future, psychology will be based on a new foundation." This foundation was, of course, his theory of evolution.

To those in favor of concepts like free will and personal responsibility, such an idea seems quite stupid. But a growing number of scientists are questioning the extent to which our behavior is controlled by our culture. Their research has revealed increasing evidence that the human mind is made up of natural mechanisms (if; h-g,), which control everything from the way we perceive (感知) time and space, to how we learn survival techniques and choose mates.

43. The story about the lady suggests that, in Darwin's time, the theory of evolution made many people feel

A) embarrassed B) delighted C) comfortable D) miserable

44. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 2?

A) People's attitudes towards Darwin's view remain unchanged.

B) Darwin's view of man's origin has been widely accepted.

C) Natural selection has no effect on our genes.

D) The story about the lady has proved to be true.

45. The phrase "was responsible for" in Line 1, Paragraph 3 most probably means“ “

A) had the ability to influence C) was to blame for

B) had the duty of D) was the cause of

46. According to Darwin's view, our psychology

A) will change greatly in the future

B) has nothing to do with evolution

C) is mainly shaped by evolution

D) is shaped by our physical characteristics

47. If Darwin's view on our psychology is correct, what controls our behavior?

A) The characteristics of our culture.

B) The mechanisms of our mind.

C) The way we perceive time and space.

D) The way we live and choose mates.

Passage Four

Questions 48 to 52 are based on the following passage.

November 7, 2000 is a very special day in the United States. Voters all across the nation are electing representatives in local and national races. Some people think they are voting for the president of our country too. They're not! Again, they're voting for representatives, who are called electors.

In most states the electors are chosen on a winner-take-all basis. That makes it possible for one candidate to win the most electors while getting less popular votes nationally than his opponent.

The electors will meet in their respective states and cast their votes for the president and the vice-president on December 18, 2000. The Constitution (宪法) does not force the electors to vote for the candidates that they promise to vote for, but they almost always do. On January 6, 2001, just two weeks before the new president and vice-president take office, the votes will be counted in the Congress.

If no one gets a majority of the electoral votes, at least 270 out of 538, the winners will be chosen by the Congress. The House of Representatives will choose (one vote per state) the president and the Senate (参议院) will choose the vice-president. It's not likely, but we could actually end up with a president from one party and a vice-president from another.

48. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the first paragraph'?.

A) Electors are representatives of local and national races.

B) Local voters are usually referred to as electors.

C) Electors are chosen by representatives for each state.

D) Local voters have the right to choose the US president directly.

49. What should the electors d67

A) Promise to vote for popular candidates.

B) V ote for the candidates they promise to.

C) Gather in the Congress to vote for the president.

D) V ote for the president in their respective states.

50. A candidate will become the U.S. president if he gets

A) about half of the electoral votes

B) over half of the electoral votes

C) most of the electoral votes from the same party

D) most of the electoral votes from two parties

51. The new president will take office after the voting starts.

A) in about two weeks C) in about two and a half months

B) in about two months D) in about half a year

52. The main idea of the passage is __ the US president is elected.

A) how B) why C) where D) when

新理念大学英语三级阅读教程

本文节选自Iron John: A Book About Men Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. Copyright 1994, 2004 by Robert Bly We talk a great deal about "the American man," as if there were some constant quality that remained stable over decades, or even within a single decade. The men who live today have veered far away from the Saturnian, old-man-minded farmer, proud of his introversion, who arrived in New England in 1630, willing to sit through three services in an unheated church. In the South, an expansive, motherbound cavalier developed, and neither of these two "American men" resembled the greedy railroad entrepreneur that later developed in the Northeast, nor the reckless I-will-do-without culture settlers of the West. 【这一段里作者提到哪几种美国人?他提这些的目的是什么?】 Even in our own era the agreed-on model has changed dramatically. During the fifties, for example, an American character appeared with some consistency that became a model of manhood adopted by many men: the Fifties male. He got to work early, labored responsibly, supported his wife and children, and admired discipline. Reagan is a sort of mummified version of this dogged type. This sort of man didn't see women's souls well, but he appreciated their bodies; and his view of culture and America's part in it was boyish and optimistic. Many of his qualities were strong and positive, but underneath the charm and bluff there was, and there remains, much isolation, deprivation, and passivity. Unless he has an enemy, he isn't sure that he is alive. The Fifties man was supposed to like football, be aggressive, stick up for the United States, never cry, and always provide. But receptive space or intimate space was missing in this image of a man. The personality lacked some sense of flow. The psyche lacked compassion in a way that encouraged the unbalanced pursuit of the Vietnam war, just as, later, the lack of what we might call "garden" space inside Reagan's head led to his callousness and brutality toward the powerless in El Salvador【查工具书:是怎么回事?】, toward old people here, the unemployed, schoolchildren, and poor people in general. 【Fifties Male有什么特点?】 The Fifties male had a clear vision of what a man was, and what male

大学英语三级B级-阅读理解(三) (总分:25.00,做题时间:90分钟) 一、单项选择题(总题数:5,分数:25.00) Task 6 The sense of sound is one of our most important means of knowing what is going on around us. Sound has a wasted product, too, in the form of noise. Noise has been called unwanted sound. Noise is growing and it may get much worse before it gets any better. Scientists, for several years, have been studying how noise affects people and animals. They are surprised by what they have learned. Peace and quiet are becoming harder to find. Noise pollution is a threat that should be looked at carefully. There is a saying about it being so noisy that you can't hear yourself think. Doctors who study noise believe that we must sometimes hear ourselves think. If we don't, we may have headaches, other aches and pains, or even worse mental problems. Noise adds more tension (紧张) to a society that already faces enough stress. But noise is not a new problem. In ancient Rome, people complained so much about noise that the government stopped chariots (四轮马车) from moving through the streets at night! Ways of making less noise are now being tested. There are even laws controlling noise. We cannot return to the "good old days" of peace and quiet. But we can reduce noise--if we shout loudly enough about it. (分数:5.00) (1).Why are scientists surprised by the findings in their noise study?(分数:1.00) A.Because the world is becoming more and more noisy. √ B.Because they have learned that noise is also a kind of pollution. If with the oncoming darkness of the 3rd night you knew that the sun would never rise for you again, how would you spend those 3 precious days? What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon?
