Arctic will soon be free from ice, experts say. The change is bound to take place, but global warming and climate change are changing the earth's landscape rapidly, causing panic worldwide.

Experts say that the Arctic sea ice is melting quite faster that expected and it can affect not just the region, but Earth in general. A scientist even says that next year, or maybe the year after that, the Arctic will be free of ice.

Peter Wadhams, a scientist, said that the melting trend led to his statement. “Most people expect this year will see a record low in the Arctic’s summer sea-ice cover. Next year or the year after that, I think it will be free of ice in summer and by that I mean the central Arctic will be ice-free,” Peter Wadhams, director of the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge, said in an interview with the Guardian. “You will be able to cross over the North Pole by ship.” Wadhams added. He strongly believes that although some pieces of ice will remain, the Arctic basin may be free of sea ice in the next two years starting in the summer of 2017.

Wadhams’ study says that melting sea ice will have a great influence on the planet since the sea ice is more capable of reflecting sunlight compared to water that can only reflect 10 percent of sunlight. Once the sea ice melted, the water can only reflect a small amount of sunlight. This means that the Earth will receive and absorb more sunlight, making the planet even hotter.

The year 2016 has already broken records of the hottest temperature ever recorded and the trend doesn’t seem to show any decrease in global warming. “It doesn’t look like the ice is healing or growing back,”Tom Wagner, NASA’s manager for cryosphere (冰冻圈) research said in a statement.

Like Wadhams, scientists and researchers all over the world are lecturing around to educate people to help lighten global warming that has already changed the planet’s landscape.

24. What do the author think of global warming and climate change?

A.Neutral

B. Anxious

C. Unbelievable

A. What experts say has caused worldwide fear and great anxiety.

B. The speed of the Arctic sea ice being melted is beyond expectation.

D. It’s impossible that the Arctic will be free of ice in one or two years.

26. What is Peter Wadhams?

C. A film director.

D. An institute director.

27. Why would the Earth become even hotter if the sea ice melted?

A. More water will cover the earth.

B. There will be more hours of daylight.

C. The water will reflect more sunlight.

D. More heat will be taken in by the earth.

As shoppers, we all behave differently, so it’s impossible to say for sure whether online shopping decreases the time spent on shopping or actually increases it. There are many ways that online shopping technology can save you time when compared with a weekly trip to the grocery store or shopping mall. But not everything is bulletproof (防弹的) and you have to take in the possible errors that can be made along the way. From a grocery perspective, the customers choosing their food might not actually select the right produce or brands. It’s no different from clothes一what if the wrong sizes or colors are shipped to you? You either have to take time to ship everything back (at your expense), or travel to the store to make an exchange.

Another major factor to consider when shopping online is the “buy now” button. For many online sellers, they store your credit card information after an initial purchase. Shopping online

makes it very easy to “add to cart” and “proceed to checkout”, which can turn out to be addictive. In the end, people may accumulate truck loads of things they don’t truly need.

Another very common online “trick” that consumers face is inexpensive purchases that end up costing a lot more. For example, a $ 10 DVD can end up doubling in price once posting and packing, a transaction (交易) fee and a handling fee are added. So despite enjoying the convenience of ordering from your couch, it’s most likely to double what you want to pay.

Probably one of the most important factors to consider when shopping online is security. Today, consumers are very concerned about privacy and data security, both of which may be compromised after hitting the “Pay” button. And while many companies say that customer credit card details and passwords are not at risk, consumers still feel the need to keep an eye on their inbox, mainly for uncertain looking links. Services like Breakaway client BillGuard are available to help consumers. BillGuard is a free, personal finance security service that alarms consumers to hidden changes and billing errors.

28. Why is online shopping not definitely a way of saving time according to the passage?

A. Shoppers are incompetent on online shopping technology.

B. Shoppers need to take time to address possible errors.

C. Delivery of goods takes longer time than expected.

D. Online shopping is always influenced by net speed.

29. In what way does online shopping go beyond consumers’ real needs?

A. Online shopping can make shoppers addicted to buying.

B. Sellers use credit card information to threaten shoppers.

C. Online shopping technology can add to cart automatically.

D. Shoppers accumulate things blindly to attain free delivery.

30. The word “compromised” in the last paragraph is closest in the meaning to “.”

A. adjusted

B. reduced

C. settled

D. strengthened

31. What is the writer most likely to talk about in the following paragraphs?

A. The advantages of online shopping.

B. The future of online shopping.

C. The importance of privacy.

D. Introduction to BillGuard.

For those who have no access to clean water, the phra se “a thirst for knowl edge” may soon have a new meaning. A book with specially treated pages that can make water safe to drink has been developed. It is said that this special book could improve the life in developing countries.

An estimated 600 to 700 million people around the world are at risk of disease or even death because their drinking water is not clean. The water is infected with harmful bacteria or other pollutants. In order to help solve this problem, Dr. Dankovich has developed a special book that could turn dirty water into clean, drinkable water. The book contains 25 pages. Each page is about one millimeter thick. The pages contain nanoparticles (纳米颗粒) of silver or copper. The pages can be used as filters (过滤器) to remove harmful bacteria that can pollute drinking water. Dr. Dankovich, the inventor, says each page can treat up to 100 liters of water. Pictures on the pages show the dangers of dirty water and how to use the book for those unable to read. The pages are made of filter paper. They are designed to be torn from the book. Water can be poured through the

paper to be cleaned.

Dr. Dankovich and another researcher tested the drinkable book in Bangladesh, Ghana and South Africa. The tests proved to be successful. At the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Dr. Dankovich was asked whether she has considered adding classic literature on the book’s pages.“The idea of classical text--that’s of interest maybe later. But we have discussed a li ttle bit more exciting text. But we really haven’t had the time to go through that part,”she laughed.

Water is Life, a non-governmental organization, has provided financial support for the project. It costs just pennies to produce this special book.

32. What can we learn about the book from the text?

A. It sells well around the world.

B. It has pages with special function.

C. It is about environment protection.

D. It can treat about 100 liters of water.

33. How does the book help people get clean water?

A The nanoparticles on the pages can remove the bacteria.

B. It carries the information about the harm caused by dirty water.

C. It contains knowledge of water cleaning on each of the pages.

D. Its pages can produce small particles when dropped into water.

34. What can we infer about the drinkable book with classical text?

A. It will be available soon.

B. It’s a joke to the researchers.

C. It’s a waste of time to do research on them.

D. It has not been on the researcher’s schedule.

35. What is the passage mainly about?

36 .

The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We sleep in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn a nd the doctor`s bill for my son’s food poisoning.

I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.

39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel

trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.
