Eleven-year-old Angela was stricken with a terrible disease. She was unable to walk and she moved only in other ways. There, lying in her hospital bed, she would promise to anyone who'd listen that she was going to be walking again someday.

She was moved to a special hospital. Many ways were used to treat her disease. The doctors there were moved by her undefeatable spirit. They taught her about imagining seeing herself walking. If it would do nothing else, it would at least give her hope and something positive (积极的) to do in the long waking hours in her bed. Angela would work as hard as possible in exercise period. But she worked just as hard lying there faithfully imagining herself moving!

One day, as she was trying with all her might to imagine her legs moving again, it seemed as though a wonder happened: the bed moved! It began to move around the room! She shouted out, “Look what I'm doing! I can do it! I moved!”

Of course, at this very moment everyone else in the hospital was shouting, too. Many things were falling and glass breaking. It was an earthquake. But she believed that she made it. And now only a few years later, she's back in school. On her own two legs. No wheelchair. Many people want to know how to help kids be fitter. There

are some steps only parents can take, but kids can take charge, too.

If you, a kid, want to be fit, the following may be useful.

1. Eat a variety of foods, especially fruits and vegetables.

You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety. In that case, you're more likely to get the nutrients your body needs. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables

a day-two fruits and three vegetables.

2. Drink water and milk most often. When you're really thirsty, cold water is the No. 1 thirst-quencher (饮料). And there's a reason your school cafeteria offers cartons of milk. Kids need calcium to grow strong bones, and milk is a great source of this mineral. Aim for 3 cups of milk per day, or its equivalent.

3. Listen to your body. What does it feel like to be full? When eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable and, over a period of time, can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

4. Limit screen time. Screen time is the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer. The longer you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

5. Be active. One job is to figure out which activities you like best. Not everyone loves baseball or soccer. Maybe your passion is kickball, or dancing. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly. Find ways to be active every day.

25.Eating too much for some time will________.

A. help you grow much taller

B. make you feel energetic all the time

C. make you put on much more weight

D. make your bones grow strong

26.Which of the following is most probably taken charge of only by parents?

A. Serving a balanced diet.

B. Limiting screen time.

C. Keeping an active life.

D. Eating a variety of foods.

27.Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A. If you don't eat a variety of foods, you may lack nutrients.

B. Water and milk can help kids grow strong bones.

C. Spending less than 2 hours a day before screen may not be harmful.

D. All kids don't love baseball or soccer.

28.The text is mainly written for________.

A. parents

B. teachers

C. doctors

D. children

It was windy and cold when a store owner was sticking a sign above his door that read “Pets for Sale”. Just a s he expected, soon a little boy appeared by the store.

“How much are you going to sell the dogs for?”he asked. The store

owner answered, “$10 for each.” The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. “I have $2.5,” he said. “May I please look at them?”

The store owner smiled, taking out five dogs but one was left behind. Immediately the little boy singled it out and said, “What's wrong with that little dog?” The store owner explained that the little puppy was disabled. It would always be lame.

The little boy became excited. “That is the little puppy that I want to buy.” The store owner said, “No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you.”

The little boy got quite upset. He looked into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, “I don't want you to give him to me. That dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.5 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.”

The store owner countered, “You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.” To this, the little boy reached down and rolled up his trousers leg to show his left leg supported by a big metal stick. He looked up at the store owner and softly answered, “Well, I don't run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!”

[2014·衡水中学期中检测]America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flow more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.

Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.

Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.

For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

32. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.

B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.

D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

33. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ________.

A. warmly welcomed at the airport

B. offered a ride to his home

C. treated hospitably at his home

D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

34. The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ________.

A. strict with time

B. willing to spend time

C. careful with time

D. serious with time

35. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “________”.

A. Friendships between Chinese

B. Friendships between Americans

C. Americans' hospitality

D. Americans' and Chinese's views of friendship

Well, my club is called the Historical Club. We meet every other Thursday. I think I should point out we are not just interested in sitting around and talking about the past. A lot of our activities are to do with what can be perhaps called “living history”—by which I mean how history can help us now. And because of this, we have been very interested in finding out about the history of this town itself—and some of the famous people who used to live here. We've also visited several historic houses in the area. This year we're planning on going out much more to visit various historic sites away from the college. If you'd like to join, please come and see me.

Dear Ralph ,

I'm a middle school student and I am worried about the increasing number of the students who smoke. Two years ago, only about 15 percent of the boys smoked. Today 55 percent of them smoke, and even a few girls smoke, too.

As is well-known, smoking does great harm to our health. Facts have shown that many serious diseases, such as lung cancer, heart diseases, are connected with smoking. When one smokes in public places, harm is done not only to himself, but also to all the people around. What's more, if one smokes, he has to spend a lot of money on it.

So I do hope you can give the students a piece of advice, persuading them to give up smoking and keep themselves healthy.

Yours sincerely ,

Instead, many people turn to traditional healers (医疗者) when they are ill. These traditional healers, or witch doctors, sometimes have strange theories (学说) about how the body works. In West Bengal, for example, some people have long believed that getting bitten by a dog leads to the birth of little dogs. Dr Kumar Kanti Ghosh is a psychiatrist. He heard this belief when a nine-year-old boy came to his office about ten days after being bitten by a dog. He really couldn't believe his ears when he heard that. Kanti Ghosh sai d, “He believes that he had a little dog developing inside him. And his parents have said that sometimes the boy is barking like a dog.” A healer named Budheswar Singh says his medicine made of yogurt and herbs has cured many people. “If the man is brought to me in time, I can give him my medicine and he will be all right,” he said. Sanjay Samui is a medical doctor who wishes people would stop believing ideas like this. “They are poorly-educated village people. They still strongly believe such odd ideas,” he said. He tells everyone that in no situation can a dog be born by a human. The national government spends about one and a half percent of India's GDP on health care. This is among the lowest rates in the world. It means such traditional healers are the only choice in some places. The healers spread medical myths (神话) and even make villagers not believe doctors. 语篇解读:在印度一些贫困地区,人们依然迷信巫医。 21.The example given in Paragraph 1 shows that ________.
