第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题分2分,满分40分)

A

You’ve see news reports about people who need help after a natural disaster or animals in need. Or perhaps you've watched TV programs about how lonely older people can get.

So what can you do about any of those things? The answer: You can volunteer. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people's lives, including your own. Helping others in need is such an important part of the American way of life that many high schools require their students to spend a certain number of hours volunteering in order to graduate.

Volunteering isn't like school: Instead of having the choices made for you about where to go and what subjects to learn, you can choose what really interests you and who (or what) is most deserving of your time.

If you like animals, help out at a local animal shelter. Most shelters depend on volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and well exercised.

If you have a friend or relative who has or had a medical problem(like cancer,HIV,for example), you might be inspired to donate your time to help an organization that raises money for research, delivers meals,or offers other help to people with the illness.

If you like children, there are lots of volunteering opportunities--from being a Big Brother or Big Sister to helping out in an after-school sports program.

You also can: serve food at a homeless shelter; take part in a park cleanup day. And if you have more than one thing you love, you can combine the two. For example,if you love kids and are great at arts and crafts(工艺), visit your local children's hospital and offer to lead art activities for young patients.

Copenhagen, one of the world's most bicycle-friendly cities, has begun turning its network of cycle paths into bike highways in an effort to push more commuters to leave their cars at home.

Considered one of Europe's two“bicycle capitals”along with Amsterdam. Copenhagen counts more bicycles than people and cycling is so popular that its bike paths can become crowded.

The creation of bike highways“comes right on time”, says Danish Cyclist Federation spokesman Frits Bredal.“Copenhagen's roads are overloaded with people who want to ride their bicycles in all kinds of weather.”

If in the 1960s Danes viewed the car as the symbol of freedom, the bicycle has replaced that role today. “It's a mode of transportation used by all social classes, even politicians ride bikes,”Bredal says.

It is on crowded Noerrebrogad—the busiest bicycle street in Europe, according to the cyclist association—that city planners have decided to build the first of Copenhagen’s environmentally friendly boulevards(林荫大道). The jammed bike paths will be widened up to four meters on either side of the road, which will itself be reserved for buses only.

The idea is to make Noerrebrogade“Europe’s great cycling street”,says Andreas Roehl, the Copenhagen municipality's(市政当局) bicycle program manager who is also known as “Mr. Bike”. But Roehl is not content with making life easier for Copenhagen’s inner-city cyclists: He wants to get suburbanites(郊区居民)out of their cars and onto two wheels as well.

His goal is to hike the percentage of suburban commuters cycling to and from the city from the 37% it is today to more than 50% by 2015. Within the city,55% of all commuters already travel by bike, according to the municipality.

Already Copenhagen stands out among other European capitals for its cycling infrastructure, counting more than 390 kilometers of bike paths.

63.The best title for the passage is .

Scientists have long had it in their mind to make a robot lizard(蜥蜴). They began with finding out why a lizard can hang on a wall. They noticed the lizard's toes were unique: They have suckers(吸盘), which enable them to hang on walls. They, therefore, made a robot with suckers on its hands and feet.

The robot could hang on the wall but fell off when crawling. So, they went on researching. 6 years ago, scientists discovered that suckers only were not enough. It is the bristles(刚毛) on each foot that adds friction and static adsorption(静电吸附力) that makes a lizard move on the smooth wall easily without falling down.

Then scientists made great efforts to fix thick bristles to the robot's hands and feet. However, the effect was not satisfactory. The robot still couldn't attach itself firmly to the wall.

Scientists got puzzled: How on earth can the lizard crawl on an extremely smooth wall or even on a ceiling without dropping off ?

An accidental finding inspired them: One day a scientist happened to see an animal attack a lizard and bite off its tail. The lizard broke away from the animal’s teeth and threw itself on a wall to escape, only to fall off heavily on the ground. The scientist wondered: Is it the tail that plays an important role in its travelling on the wall? He caught some lizards for an experiment. The result proved his assumption: A tailless lizard has no trouble walking on an ordinary wall but can't on a smooth one. A further study showed the lizard's tail can prevent it falling over backward and, what's more, that the tail acts as an additional leg while one of the lizard's legs leaves the wall, which is always the case while it is walking on the wall.

Thus, Tailbot, a super tailed robot, is born.

67.What part(s) would be a must if scientists just wanted a robot which can hang on the wall?

A. Suckers

B. Suckers and bristles

C. Suckers, bristles and a tail

D. Hands, feet, bristles and a tail

68.The bristles function as something .

A. to protect the lizard's toes from injury

B. to produce friction and static adsorption

C. to prevent a lizard falling over backward

D. to help a lizard move about without falling

69.When it travels on the wall, the biggest importance of a lizard’s tail lies in .

A.helping support the body B.serving as another leg

C.sticking to the wall D.stopping slipping

70.What does the underlined part in the fifth paragraph refer to?

A.A lizard often falls over backward while it travels on the wall

B.A lizard often has three legs on the wall while walking on the wall

C.A lizard’s tail will replace one of its legs while it moves on the wall D.A lizard’s tail often prevents it falling over backward while moving on the wall

How to Save Water

Many of us know the importance of saving water. But we are now wasting a large amount of water in our daily life. It's estimated that about 70% of the water used in a family every day can be saved if we follow the tips below.

First, use recycled water. For example, you can use the water to wash rice first, and then use it to wash vegetables. Finally, the water can be used to wash the toilet.

Second, when you are taking a bath, turn down the tap a little bit. Remember to shut it off in time if you are not using it. Third, when you are washing dishes, use some paper to clean them first, and then use the water to wash them, which will save much water.

Only when everyone takes an active part can we really save our limited water resource.

A Well, parents, surprise! Lots of us are using Twitter and Facebook to find rides, and not just to school. It’s awkward to call a friend and ask for a ride, and half the time they’ll say, “Sorry, my car is full.” But with Twitter, you just tweet #Ashleys Pool Party and look for other people heading the same way. It may sound risky, but many teens stay within their own social circles to find rides, and don’t branch out beyond friends when asking on Twitter. For me, I only rideshare with people I know, but to some young people, especially those taking longer trips, stranger danger is less of a concern. The sharing economy got big during the recession(经济衰退). It allows people to access more goods and services using technology, while also allowing them to share cost. And that technology, for me, is what the car was for my mom, a gateway to more freedom. According to the researchers at the University of Michigan, 30 years ago, eight in ten American 18-year-olds had a driver’s license. Today it’s six in ten. So it’s not that surprising that on my 16th birthday I wasn’t rushing to get a license. All I wanted was an iPhone. Juliet Schor (Sociology professor at Boston College) knows people of my age love being connected and for young people driving means they have to disconnect from their technology, and that’s a negative. So if they could sit in the passenger side and still be connected, that’s going to be a plus. To me, another plus is ridesharing represents something more than trying to save money. I see it as evidence that people still depend on each other. My generation shares their cars and apartments the way neighbors used to share cups of sugar. For the system to work, some of us still need our own cars. But until I get my own version of the silver Super Beetle, you can find me on Twitter. 21 The writer usually rideshares with _____. A. anyone heading the same way B. people he knows

While too much can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, not enough can cause “psychological(心理的) d epressions”, a study has reported. The study, by researchers at the University of Iowa in the US, discovered that when rats are deficient in salt, they don’t do activities they normally enjoy. The recommended daily salt intake for an adult is four grams, although experts say the body needs only half as much. However, most adults in the developed world consume(消耗)around ten grams a day, mainly because their diets contain high salt amounts. Today, 77 percent of US salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods, like frozen dinners and fast food. The minerals in salt are required by the body—in small quantities—to help move liquid in and out of cells. But too much can cause diseases, for example high blood pressure. Today scientists are finding that salt is an addictive substance—almost like a drug. One s ign of addiction is using a substance even when it’s known to be harmful. Many people are told to eat less salt due to health concerns, but they have trouble doing so because they like the taste and find low-salt foods tasteless. Humans have a long histor y of eating salt. In the Stone Age, people didn’t need to find salt, because they hunted most of their food, and ate a lot of red meat, which has plenty of salt in it. But when people began to farm, about 10,000 BC, they started to eat mainly grains like rice and wheat, and very little meat. Then they had to find another way to get salt. 1. What does the underlined word "deficient" in the third paragraph mean? A. enough B. far from enough C. more than enough D. plenty 2. The major role of salt is to ____________. A. help the body work well B. help fight against depression C. help people get rid of an addiction to drugs D. help people enjoy sugary substances 3. Which of the following statements is true? A. People have trouble reducing salt because they don't know it is harmful to eat too much of it. B. Before 10,000 BC, human beings did not need salt. C. The richer the country is, the more salt is eaten there. D. Taking more than 4 grams of salt a day can be harmful for an adult's health. 4. What kind of food should people eat more of? A. Frozen food B. Fast food C. Red meat D Low--salt food 第二节:七选五 Everyone knows that the Frenchmen are romantic, the Italians are fashionable and the Germans are serious. Are these just stereotypes(刻板印象) or is there really such a thing as national character? And if there is, can it affect how a nation succeed or fail? At least one group of people is certain that it can. A recent survey of the top 500 entrepreneurs (企业家) in the UK found that 70% felt that their efforts were not appreciated by the British public. Britain is hostile (敌意的) to success, they said. It has a culture of jealousy(嫉妒).__5__ Jealousy is sometimes known as the “green-eyed monster” and the UK is its home. Scientists at Warwich University in the UK recently tested this idea. They gathered a group of people together and gave each an imaginary amount of money.__6__ Those given a little were given the chance to destroy the large amount of money given to others— but at the cost of losing their own. Two thirds of the people tested agreed to do this. __7__. But there is also opposite evidence. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development recently reported that the UK is now the world's fourth largest economy. That is not bad for people who are supposed to hate success. People in the UK also work longer hours than anyone else in Europe. So the British people are not lazy, either. “It is not really success that the British dislike,” says Carey Cooper, a professor of management at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. “It’s people using their success in a way that seems proud or unfair or which separates them from their roots.” _8__ They set out to do things in their way. They work long hours. By their own efforts they become millionaires.__9__ It hardly seems worth following their example. If they were more friendly, people would like them more. And more people want to be like them. A. This seems to prove that the entrepreneurs were right to complain. B. The one who owns most money in the end is the winner.
