卡上将该项涂黑。

Waves are beautiful to look at, but they can destroy ships at sea, as well as houses and buildings near the shore. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the

surface of the water. The sun heats the earth, causing the air to

rise and the winds to blow. The

winds blow across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and

bigger ones.

The size of a wave depends on how strong the wind is, how long it blows, and how large the body of water is. In a small bay big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up

giant powerful waves.

A rule says that the height of a wave (in meters) will usually be more than one-tenth of the wind’s speed (in kilometers). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometers per hour, most waves will be about twelve meters. Of course, some waves may combine to form giant waves that are higher. In 1993 the United States Navy reported the largest measured wave in

history. It rose in the Pacific Ocean to a height of thirty-four meters.

36.One can guess the height of a wave by knowing__________.

A. how fast the wind is blowing

B. how long the wind blows

C. how large the body of water is

D. how the waves are built up 37. When the wave is blowing at 80 kilometers per hour, the height of most waves will be

__________.

A. about one meter

B. about eight meters

C. about eighty meters

D. about ten meters

38. Air rises when________.

A. the wind is blowing

B. the body of water is large

C. there is powerful wave

D. the sun heats the earth

39. The best title for this selection is __________.

A. What Causes Waves

B. The Largest Waves in History

C. Beautiful Waves

Australia, the last continent, was discovered by ships belonging to some European nations in the seventeenth century. These nations were less interesting in changing it into colony(殖民

地) than in exploring it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the settlements in Australia. This history and the geography of these two British colonies

have some other things in common as well.

Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and

their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement

took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population

was increasing. Settlements of the western part of both countries developed quickly after gold

was discovered in America in 1849, two years later in Australia.

抚顺协作校英语高考专练

Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some striking differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by

revolution while Australia won its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike

the United States, was firstly turned into a colony by English prisoners and its economic

development was in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had

fifteen times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people

today in the United States. Yet, in spite of these and other main differences, Australia and the

United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of

the world.

40. Who turned Australia into a colony?

A. Britain

B. Several European countries

C. The United States

D. None of the above

41.In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west

firstly for the reason that ________ ?

A. the population was increasing rapidly in the east

B. the English thought there might be richer land there

C. gold was discovered there

D. fewer people lived there

42. In the early 1920s, ________ .

A. Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep

B. There were more than sheep in Australia than in the United States

C. The population in Australia was greater than that of the United States

D. The United States had twice as many sheep as people

43. The last sentence in the last paragraph “…Australia and the United States have more in

common with each other than either of the rest of the world.” Means _______

A. the United States and Australia do not have any main differences

B. the United Stated and Australia have much in common than they have with other

countries

C. the United States and Australia have nothing in common with the rest of the world

D. in common with the rest of the world, the United States and Australia have a lot of

differences

C

How Long Can People Live?

She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a concert

in the neighborhood on her 121st birthday.

When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world's recordholder. She lived to the ripe

old age of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span(寿命)? If scientists come up with

some sort of pill or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150----or beyond?

Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers. "Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn't

surprise me if someone alive today reaches 130 or 135," says Jerry Shay at the University of

Texas.

Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. "People can live much longer than we think,"

he says. "Experts used to say that humans couldn't live past 110. When Calment blew past that age,

抚顺协作校英语高考专练

they raised the number to 120. So why can't we go higher?"

The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it's all just guessing. "Anyone

can make up a number," says Rich Miller at the University of Michigan. "Usually the scientist

who picks the highest number gets his name in Time magazine."

Won't new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for

aging would probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working on

treatments that lengthen the life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life

span is about 80 years, says Miller, “adding another 50 percent would get you to 120.”

So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life span

is flexible(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of

the University of Washington.

“We can get flies to live 50 percent longer,” he says. “But a

fly's never going to live 150 years.”

Of course, if you became a new species(物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story, he adds.

Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve(进化) their way

to longer life? "It's

pretty cool to think about," he says with a smile.

44. What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?

A. People can live to 122.

B. Old people are creative.

C. Women are sporty at 85.

D. Women live longer than men.

45. According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas, ________.

A. the average human life span could be 110

B. scientists can't find ways to slow aging

C. few people can expect to live to over 150

D. researchers are not sure how long people can live

46. What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?

A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.

B. The average human life span cannot be doubled.

C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.

E. New techniques cold be used to change flies into a new species.

Recently, the students of Senior 3 in our school have had a discussion about whether we

should have classes on weekends.

30% of them think they should have classes on weekends because the college entrance examinations this year will be held in June, and students should

make full use of free time to review what they have learnt.

Another 30% are against the idea of having classes on weekends. They

believe students should have a good rest on weekends so that they can study

more effectively during the weekends.

The other 40% of the students don’t a gree with either of the ideas above. In

their opinion, study and rest are both important for students. They suggest one

day of the weekend should be used to study and during the other day they have a

rest.
