Time is running out for my friend. While we are sitting at lunch she casually mentions she and her husband are thinking of starting a family. "We're taking a survey, “she says, half-joking. "Do you think I should have a baby?"

"It will change your life," I say, carefully keeping my tone neutral. "I know," she says, "no more sleeping in on weekends, no more spontaneous holidays..."

But that's not what I mean at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing will heal, but becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be vulnerable forever.

I consider warning her that she will never again read a newspaper without thinking: "What if that had been MY child?" That every plane crash, every house fire will haunt

her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she

will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your

child die. I look at her carefully manicured nails and

stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level

of a bear protecting her cub.

I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years

she has invested in her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting, and she will think her baby's sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her child is all right.

I want my friend to know that every decision will no

longer be routine. That a five-year-old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at a restaurant will become a major dilemma. The issues of independence and gender

identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in the lavatory. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself

constantly as a mother.

Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her

that eventually she will shed the added weight of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her own life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. She would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years—not to accomplish her own dreams—but to watch her children accomplish theirs.

I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of

seeing your child learn to hit a ball. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real it hurts.

My friend's look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. "You'll never regret it," I say finally. Then, squeezing my friend's hand, I offer a prayer for her and me and all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this holiest of callings.

10 Melancholy Music Can Make Us Feel Better We've all turned to melancholy music to make us feel better at some point in our lives, but why does doubling down on the sadness help drag us out of the mire? A new study sheds light on what's going on inside our brains when we match our music to our feels, and it looks like sad music can be enjoyable - rather than simply depressing - because it triggers positive memories that can help to lift our mood. Psychologist Adrian North from Curtin University in Australia says there are two groups of possible explanations for why we enjoy listening to sad music like this: one from social psychology, and one from cognitive neuroscience. In terms of social psychology, one way of thinking about this is that we feel better about ourselves if we focus on someone who's doing even worse, a well-known process known as downward social comparison. Everything's going to be okay, because this person is having an even worse day than you are. Another hypothesis from social psychology is that people like to listen to music that mirrors the tone of their current life circumstances – the songs act as a sort of tuning fork for our own situations, and they resonate with us. You Don’t Lack Reason But Action If you ask me what are the things that people should not do no matter how, the

Andy's Hobbies Andy is always watching animal programs on TV.When he was a child his favorite books were Gerald Durrel's animal books. He also wrote down something about animals when he heard them — especially the ones that were about loving animals. He has always had pets. His first animal friends were pigs. And then he tried his best to persuade his parents to get a dog.For some reasons they did not seem to believe Andy would walk the dog three times a day,no matter how Andy promised he'd do it. He did his best to persuade them:he was good at drawing and left drawings of dogs all over the place. He ran to the library, borrowed all the dog books he could find, and left them lying around as well. His parents were quite used to his books lying around everywhere. Then Andy's mother was told a friend's cat had kittens and they could go and get one.At first Andy was a little disappointed. As time went by,he learned to love the cat so much he has had cats ever since. Cats let us know when it is time to change the sofa.Either when the fabric starts to look like Einstein's hair that has been combed with cat paws, thanks to the generous donation of cat hair. Larry Schwarz's Hobbies Larry Schwarz has played with toys all his life.As a child,he often pulled his toys apart, and then glued them back together. He made toy rockets, cars, and buildings out of boxes.Although he put his toys away long enough to become a lawyer,he never lost his childhood passion for toys.Schwarz dreamed up many toys while in school.Instead of taking notes in class,he filled 26 notebooks with toy sketches! Still,he managed to get his lawyer degree. Today, instead of working in a courtroom,Schwarz skateboards around his Rumpus's headquarters in New York City.In 1997,he started the Rumpus Toy company and invented all kind of crazy toys, like Gus Gutz,a doll with 12 spongy organs, and Sy Klops,a one-eyed doll.Even the boxes are playful.Printed instructions on Rumpus toy boxes

Happiness Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow.Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich peoplewho are as miserable as if they were living in hell.We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs.Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems.Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness.Lottery winnings do not bring happiness.Gamble winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work,There is no use sayingin your contribution towards others’happinessand in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it.You will think you are a base person.Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem.Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive workwhich makes a real contribution to othersand makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.”“Some day when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.”Life just does not work that way.If you wait for certain things to happenand depend on external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some of our fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you've read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o'clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won't need to live in fear of it. Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes. Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us. Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you've got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is! "Ho-hum, let it slide. I'll just drift along." Here's one problem with drifting: you can't drift your way to the top of the mountain. The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take a sword to this enemy. The third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there's room for healthy skepticism. You can't believe everything. But you also can't let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worse of all, they doubt themselves. I'm telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.

Self-Reliance Trust yourself. These are the voices which we hear in solitude, but they grow faint(微弱的,无力的) and inaudible(听不见的) as we enter into the world. Society everywhere is in conspiracy(阴谋,共谋) against the manhood of every one of its members. Society is a joint stock company, in which the members agree, for the better securing(使安全,获得) of his bread to each shareholder(股东), to surrender(投降,屈服) the liberty and culture of the eater. The virtue in most request is conformity(一致,符合,遵守). Self-reliance is its aversion(嫌恶,憎恨). It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs. What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous(艰巨的,艰难的) in actual and in intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. The objection(反对) to conforming to usages that have become dead to you is that it scatters your force. It loses your time and blurs the impression of your character. If you maintain a dead church, contribute to ad dead Bible Society, vote with a great party either for the Government

The October leaves have fallen on the lake. On bright, calm days they lie in thousands on the now darkening water, mostly yellow flotillas of poplar, floating continuously down from great trees that themselves shake in the windless air with the sound of falling water, but on rainy days or after rain they seem to swim or be driven away, and nothing remains to break the surface except the last of the olive—yellow lily pads that in high summer covered every inch of water like emerald porcelain. The lilies have gone too, the yellow small—headed kind that in bud are like swimming snakes, and the great reeds are going, woven by wind and frost into untidy basket islands under which coot and moorhen skid for cover at the sound of strangers. All summer in this world of water —lilies, the coot and moorhen lived a bewildered life. There was no place where they could swim and all day they could be seen walking daintily, heads slightly aside and slightly down, across the lily-hidden water, as bemused by the world of leaves as they had been in winter by the world of ice. In the clearer water they are more active. The lake is long and unbroken except for two small islands. The birds, as the fit takes them, dash madly up and down it, taking off and touching down it, taking off and touching down like small fussy black sea-planes. Beside them the arrival of the wild duck, at much higher speed, is almost majestic. They plane down, the necks of the drakes shining like royal green satin, with the air of squadrons coming in after long flights from home. It was not until late summer that fishing was possible. The water was so low and clear after drought that fish could be seen in great dark shoals, sunning themselves, shy, impossible to catch. Only in the evening, as the air cooled and the water darkened, and the surface was broken with the silver dances of the rising shoals, would you perhaps get a bite or two, a baby perch sucking at the worm, a roach no bigger than a sardine. All the time, on bright hot mornings especially, great pike would lie out in the middle of the lake in shoals of ten or even twenty, like black torpedoes, transfixed, never moving except in sudden immense rises that rocked the water-surface with rings.
