Some people won der why cou ntries spend millio ns of dollars on 1L space projects. They want to know how space research helps people on Earth. Actually space tech no logy helps people on Earth every day. This is called “ spinoff tech no logy. Spin-off tech no logy is space tech no logy that is now used on Earth.

In early space programs, such as the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s, and in the Space Shuttle missi ons today, scie ntists developed objects for the astr on auts to use on the moon and in space. We now use some of these objects every day. For example, we have Quartz crystal clocks and watches with accuracy of one minute a year. We purify the water we drink with a water filter(过滤器)designed for the astronauts' use in space. The cordless, hand-held tools we use in our homes, such as vacuum clea ners, flashlights, drills and saws came from the tech no logy of these early space programs.

On cold win ter days we can stay warm with battery-operated gloves and socks, and in sulated(绝缘的)coats and jackets. All of these clothes are similar to the spacesuit desig ns that kept astronauts comfortable in the temperatures of the moon, and are spin-offs from space tech no logy.

These products are only a few examples of the many ways space tech no logy helps us in our everyday lives. No one knows how new spin-off tech no logy from the Intern ati onal Space Statio n will help us in the future.

It is dark at the bottom of the ocean. It ' cold down there, too. There ' no air to breathe. The water pressure is high. There may be fishes that could hurt you. The deep sea can be an un pleasa nt place. But people are still fascinated by it, not just because of the amazing scenery. The seafloor

might hold the secret to the beg inning of life on Earth.

Ocea ns cover more tha n two-thirds of our pla net. Yet, we have explored just a small part of the un derwater world. A new project is there to explore the ocea n deeper. A new US mach ine can carry people as deep as 6,500 meters. It will take the place of an older mach ine called Alvin. The old one has bee n in use for 40 years but it can only go dow n to 4,500 meters. Alvi n played a key role in many important jobs. Alvin helped biologists collect worms, chemists gather rocks, and ocea no graphers map the seafloor and take water samples.

But now it ' about time for a new one. The new machine will be like Alvin. It 'llbe about 27

feet long, about the size of a small school bus. The seat ing area in side will be small, about two meters wide. Like Alvi n, it 'carry a pilot and two passe ngers. It will be able to move like Alvin does. It 'give passe ngers more cha nce to enjoy the view. Alvin has only three win dows. The new one will have five. It will travel more than a mile an hour faster than Alvin. Getting to the bottom faster and moving around more quickly will allow researchers to make the most of their time un derwater.

Tourists in space

Man has bee n traveli ng into space for more tha n 40 years. Even

today though, very few people get the chance to be an astronaut, about 30

per year. This is mainly because of the expense. It costs millions of yuan to

train and send astronauts into space. Very few coun tries can afford this.

This is why America n bus in essma n Denn is Tito paid 20,000,000 US dollars to the Russia n space agency to go into space. He visited the International Space Station. His trip, making him the first ever space tourist, took eight days altogether. He spent most of his time taking photos, looking at the Earth and listening to music on his once-in —-lifetime trip.

After landing safely back on earth, Mr. Tito thought the trip was worth the mon ey. The only difficulty he had was walking but this is normal for anyone who ' been in zero gravity(重力).

Some people, especially in the America n space age ncy, think that you must be trained to go into space. They worry about the safety. Mr. Tito received trai ning before he left. He also helped to prepare food for the others while in space. They told him what to do and where he was planning to go.

A survey showed that 75% of Americans supported space tourism. Some people are of all the places on earth. They are looking for a new trip and space is the place.

The money Mr. Tigo gave the Russians equaled 20% of their annual budget (年度预算). If we want to see men on Mars and other planets, we may need rich people like Mr. Tito to help us pay for it. The

Russians have more rich people who want to become space tourists. They should take them.

Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocea n.

In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3,000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10,330 feet. In 1960 his son Jack dived to a depth of 35,800 feet.

All these early dives were deep. But the divers couldn ' t stay cRhen foaevtsry long.

come back up to the surface after a few sec on ds. Scien tists n eeded to stay dow n Ion ger to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded.

Now scie ntists are develop ing even better equipme nt. With this new equipme nt, men can stay below the surface for days or even for weeks. In 1962 Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men dow n to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. The n in 1964 he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface.

Many coun tries are now study ing un dersea liv ing. The former Soviet Union has an un dersea laboratory in the Crimea n Sea. The Un ited States has a laboratory 50 feet dow n on the ocea n floor off the Virgin Isla nds. In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks. The n a team of five wome n scie ntists stayed in the laboratory. Next came other teams of men. All were there explori ng the ocea n depths and making pla ns for the use of its resources. Scien tists now have found many ocea n min erals, vegetables and ani mal wealth there to provide food for the en tire world.

Our lives are full of things to do. These things keep us busy not only at school and work but also at home. As a r 66 , we do not have eno ugh time to enjoy o 67 .

Now there is no need for us to dream any I 68 . Robotic scientists have developed different types of robots. Robots come in different s 69 and shapes.
