Martha Graham, born in 1894, was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance, whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts, Stravinsky had on music, or Frank Lloyd Wright had on

architecture. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.

Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing.

In 1936, Graham made her defining work Chronicle, which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.

Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn't give up. Her last completed ballet was 1990's Maple Leaf Rag. "A Dancer's World" is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.

Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the country's highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninety-six. In 1998, Time magazine listed her as the "Dancer of the Century" band as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.

24. Some famous artists mentioned in Paragraph 1 show Martha Graham.

A. kept in touch with them regularly

B. had a great effect on modern dance

C. liked to make more friends with them

D. was influenced greatly by them

25. Why didn't Martha's parents approve of her desire to dance at first?

A. American dance was seen as a lower art form.

B. There was no academic school to teach dancing.

C. Her family was too poor to afford her tuition.

D. She was too old to learn American dance.

26. When Martha Graham continued to dance in her 70s, she.

A. achieved huge success once again

B. received many awards for her age

C. was attacked by people

D. was warmly welcomed by the youth

27. Which of the following will be the best title of the passage?

A. The Development of Modern Dance in America

B. The Background of Modern Dance in America

C. The Awards Martha Graham Won in her Life

D. Martha Graham and her Achievements in Dance

C

For a lot of people, getting a full night’s sleep is nothing more than just a dream. Some of us climb into bed in the early evening, and the next thing we know, it’s 2 in the morning and we’re still staring at the ceiling.

It’s com mon knowledge that sleep problems can be caused by things such as stress, anxiety, or even using a smartphone before bedtime. But recently, a team of researchers discovered that genes

could also be a cause of sleepless nights.

The scientists, from Rockefeller University in New York, US, found that delayed sleep phase disorder(DSPD), a condition that affects one’s sleeping patterns, is passed down via a mutated(突变的)gene. DSPD sufferers wake up later and go to bed later than the average person.

To come to their conclusion, the team studied a 46-year-old woman who is only usually able to fall asleep at 2 or 3 in the morning.

It was discovered that the woman’s body produces the hormonethat helps us sleep at night up to seven hours later than regular sleepers. The scientists found this was caused by a mutation in one of the woman’s gene, one that helps regulate the “body clock”.

Some of the woman’s family members were also found to share the same mutation----and the same sleeping problems----leading the scientists to believe that sleep troubles are passed down through the generations.

However, having this mutation doesn’t mean you automatically have sleep problems. The team also found two people who had the mutation but reported no problems with their sleep.

But while this is all interesting discovery, it offers no help to those who can’t fall asleep at night----although there are a few things you could try to help you sleep earlier.

BBC journalist Michael Mosley produced a TV documentary in May in which he talked about his battle with insomnia(失眠)and the techniques he used.

“I avoid social media for at least an hour before bed, I do mindfulnessexercises, and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I read a book for all hour or so,”he wrote in an article for the Radio Times.

28. What have scientists recently discovered about sleep problems?

A. Stress and anxiety can cause sleep problems.

B. Smartphones are the main cause of sleep problems nowadays.

C. Sleep problems are more common among younger people.

D. Sleep problems can be a result of genetics.

29. What can we learn about the mutation of the gene related to sleep?

A. It doesn’t necessarily cause sleep problems.

B. It will be passed down to every future generation.

C. It can be changed to help solve sleep problems.

D. It will produce the hormone that helps us sleep better.

30. What does Michael Mosley suggest doing before sleep to fight against insomnia?

A. Reading interesting books.

B. Doing some outdoor exercises.

C. Keeping away from social media.

D. Listening to light music.

31. What does the underlined word “regulate” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A. manage

B. discover

C. adjust

D. adopt

D

On January 13, 2016, France became the first country in the world to pass a law requiring supermarkets to donate what is approaching its expiration date (有效期) instead of throwing it away. The regulation that applies to supermarkets over 4,000 square feet requires stores to sign donation contracts with local food banks. The law also makes it illegal for stores to pour bleach(漂白剂) or water over nearly expired food, or store it inside locked warehouses until it is picked up by garbage trucks. These extreme measures are often undertaken by supermarkets to prevent the hungry from searching for food through the trash bins. Supermarkets that do not obey the new law face the risk of large amounts of fines. The law also requires the charities receiving the donations to store the food in a hygienic manner and, more importantly, give it out with dignity.

Jacques Bailet, who heads a network of French food banks called the Banques Alimentaires, says that of the 110,000 tons of goods received annually, only 36,000 tons comes from supermarkets. Bailet estimates that just a 15% increase in supermarket donations would translate to over 10 million additional meals to feed the hungry each year.

Though this is a great first step, Arash Dermabarsh, the activist responsible for the grassroots movement that led to the ban, is not done. He now wants to extend the law to other sectors like restaurants, bakeries, and school cafeterias and also try to convince other countries in the European Union to pass similar regulations. These steps are necessary because of the over 9 million tons of food wasted in France, an astonishing 67% is thrown by consumers, with supermarkets and restaurants making up the rest.

Sadly enough, the statistics are similar in industrialized countries as well. That is why we all need to do our share to cut back the over l.3 billion tons of perfectly good food that ends up in our landfills annually! This will not just help feed the less fortunate, but also aid in our fight against global warming. An added bonus? It will save the world billions of dollars!

32. What's the purpose of the author's writing the text?

A. To remind supermarkets to be cautious before throwing food waste.

B. To doubt whether the law concerning supermarket food waste is practical.

C. To state France becomes the first in the world to ban supermarket food waste.

D. To show France takes the lead in caring for the poor.

33. What will probably happen to a supermarket if it doesn't obey the new law?

A. It will be forced to close down.

B. Its boss will be taken to the court.

C. Its boss will be sentenced to prison.

D. It will get fined seriously.

34. By mentioning what Jacque Bailet says, the author wants to show .

A. supermarket donation could make a great difference to the hungry

B. only 15% increase in supermarket donation is no use

C. supermarkets have been active in donating food

D. he is in charge of France's food banks

35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. Every year 1.3 billion tons of food is thrown away as waste.

B. Food recycled in the whole world is worth up to billions of dollars.

C. The donation of nearly expired food has an indirect influence on the environment.

D. France government doesn't have enough confidence in other countries.

Milne I bought a box set of four Winnie the Pooh books while on holiday when I was eight years old. I adored Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore. They became very real to me and I credit them with starting a lifelong love of reading. I still have the box set, and loved reading the stories to my children w hen they were small. Part of me secretly believes A. A. Milne’s wonderful characters are all alive and well and still having their adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood. -----Roberta Smith Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights by Charlotte and Emily Bronte I can n ever separate Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights when I think about books that have stayed with me. Both had a deep impact on me when I read them as a teenager. They were the first classic books I read purely for pleasure, rather than because I had to for school. I grew up in Yorkshire, not far from where the Brontes lived, so part of me really understood the depressing landscape. That close geographical connection led to a lifelong interest in the authors as much as in the books themselves. I wrote a high-school essay on the contrasts and similarities between Charlotte and Emily and their heroines. I’d be fascinated to read that essay now to see what conclusions I reached as a 17-year-old. ----Jane Lee 1. What do we know about the Winnie the Pooh books? A. They are very romantic B. They are designed for children
