How many people have I met who have told me about the book they have been planning to write but have never yet found the time? Far too many.

This is life, all right, but we do treat it like a rehearsal (排演) and, unhappily, we do miss so many of its best moments.

We take jobs to stay alive and provide homes for our families always making ourselves believe that this style of life is merely a temporary state of affairs along the road to what we really want to do.Then, at 60 or 65, we are suddenly presented with a clock and several grandchildren and we look back and realize that all those years waiting for Real Life to come along were in fact real life.

In America they have a saying much laughed at by the English: “Have a nice day” they speak slowly and seriously in their shops, hotels and sandwich bars.I think it is a wonderful phrase, reminding us, in effect, to enjoy the moment: to value this very day.

How often do we say to ourselves, “I’ll take up horse-riding (or golf, or sailing) as soon as I get a higher position,” only to do none of those things when I do get the higher position.

When I first became a reporter I knew a man who gave up a very well paid respectable job at the Daily Telegraph to go and edit a small weekly newspaper. At the time I was astonished by what appeared to me to be his completely abnormal (反常的) mental state. How could anyone turn his back on Fleet Street in central London for a small local area? I wanted to know.

Now I am a little older and possibly wiser, I see the sense in it.In

Fleet Street the man was under continual pressure. He lived in an unattractive London suburb and he spent much of his life sitting on Southern Region trains. 64.The first paragraph of the passage tells us that ______.

A.we always try to find some time to write a book

B.we always enjoy many of life’s best moments

C. we always make plans but seldom fulfil them

D.we always do what we really want to do

65.The underlined phrase “turn his back on” (paragraph 6) most probably means _____.

A.leave for B. give up C.return to D.rely on

66.The man (paragraph 6) left his first job partly because he was ______. A.under too much pressure B.in an abnormal mental state C.not well paid D.not respected

67.What is probably the best title for the passage?

A.Provide Homes For Our Family B.Take Up Horse-riding

C.Stay Alive D.Value This Very Day

D

A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man — the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual(体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only

comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

68. From paragraph 1, we can know that in America _________.

A. college professors win great respect from common workers

B. people can always rise to the top through their won efforts

C. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made man

C. people feel painful to mention their fathers as labors.

69. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because _________.

A. servants in American are hard to get

B. It is easy to prepare a meal with canned food

C. she can hardly afford servants

D. she takes pride in what she can do herself

70. The expression “ wait on table” in the second paragraph means “_________”.

A. serve customers in a restaurant

B. keep accounts for a bar

C. wait to lay the table

D. work in a furniture shop

71. Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?

A. A Respectable Self-made Family

B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor

C. Characteristics of American Culture

D.The Development of Manual Labor

Why does cream go bad faster than butter ? Some researchers think they have the answer , and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition—a finding that could help break away from some chemicals . Cream and butter contain pretty much the same things , so why cream should go bad much faster has been a problem . Both are small globules (小球) of one liquid which spreads throughout another . The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surro unding liquid, says Brocklehurst , who led the research . In cream , fatty globules drift about in a sea of water . In butter , globules of a watery roads are locked away in a sea of fat . The bacteria (细菌) which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery areas of the mixture . “This means that in cream , the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he says , When in butter , the bacteria are locked away in locked places buried deep in the sea of fat . Trapped in this way , those colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out . They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.” In butter , you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing ,” says Brocklehurst . The researchers are already working with food companies eager to see if their products can be made to stand bacterial attack through changes of the food’s structure.

Brockelehurst believes it will be possible to make something used in salad cream , for instance , more like that in butter . The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid state . 72.The significance of Brocklehurst’s research is that .

A.it discovered small globules in both cream and butter

B.it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without using some chemicals C.it showed the secret of how bacteria increase in cream and butter D.it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition 73.According to Brocklehurst , we can keep cream fresh by . A. changing its structure B.killing the bacteria

C.reducing its water D.removing its fat

74.The und erlined word “colonies” refers to .

A.tiny globules B.watery regions

C.the surrounding liquid D. bacteria society

75.Commercial use of the research finding will be possible if salad cream can be made to stand bacterial attack .

A.by changing its chemical composition

B.by turning it into a solid lump

C.while its liquid form remains

D.while keeping its structure unchanged

2019届上海市各高中名校高三英语题型分类专题汇编--阅读理解B篇--老师版(带答案已校对珍藏版)

III. Reading Comprehension Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. B Kettlebells do not hurt people. People do. A kettlebell will get your respect – the easy way or the hard way. Here is the easy way. 1. Get a medical clearance. Get clearance, especially from an orthopedist and a cardiologist. The latter is no joking matter, since kettlebell training can be extremely intense. 2. Always be aware of your surroundings. Find a training area with a non-slippery surface on which you are not afraid to drop a kettlebell. The area must be clear of objects you might trip over – including other kettlebells – or that you might hit with a kettlebell. There should be no people or animals in a radius where you could injure them. 3. Train barefoot or wear shoes with a flat, thin sole and room for the toes to spread. Training barefoot is superior for health and performance reasons. If you must wear shoes, wear Converse Chuck Taylors, Vibram Five Fingers, or similar shoes that have thin soles and do not pinch the toes together. You have sensory receptors on the bottoms of your feet that make you stronger and improve balance and coordination. Wearing traditional shoes diminishes the ability of these receptors to work properly, and therefore inhibits performance and can increase the risk of injury. Go native. 4. Never contest for space with a kettlebell. Do not try to save a rep that has gone wrong. Guide the kettlebell to fall harmlessly, and move out of the way if necessary. And remember, quick feet are happy feet. 5. Practice all safety measures at all times. Respect every kettlebell, even the lightest one. Always use perfect form picking up and setting down a kettlebell. The set is not over until the bell is safely parked.
