The Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy, that is exactly what happens.
Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline , is a kind-hearted man who runs a business
that finds people jobs. He leads a typical American way of life, except for one thing---- he looks exactly like the President , Bill Mitchell . In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nation’s leader is that he is very nice!
The President has started using look-alike during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever. Director Ivan Reitman , who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins , Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive comedy about an ordinary man in extraordinary situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role is a real classic.
The film is 100% American. However, if you’ve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then you will enjoy Dave!

A.to tell the reader about the American government

Most people feel lonely sometimes , but it usually lasts between a few minutes and a few hours . This kind of loneliness is not serious . In fact , it is quite normal. For some people , though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.
The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It
usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind , situation---- for example , family problem, the death of love one , or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems , such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.
The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (the opposite of “temporary”) usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.
Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts , for example , friends, family members, co-workers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. For instance, our families give us emotional support, our parents and teachers give us guidance, and our friends share similar interests and activities. However, psychologists have found that , though lonely people have many social contacts , they sometimes feel they should have more. They question their popularity.
Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease, while temporary and situational loneliness can be a sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.
45. How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

D.Chronic loneliness is incurable.
48. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Three kinds of loneliness
B. Loneliness and disease
C. Loneliness and social contacts
D. Chronic loneliness
Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem . He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton , who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆)
Now Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607 and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearance had been 75 to 76 years apart.
This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more he thought there had not been three different comets as people thought. The comet gad gone away and had come back again.
It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction of what would happen in the future. He decided that this comet would appear in the year 1758. There were 53 years to go before Halley’s prediction could be tested.
In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it , for had died some years before. Ever since then the comet had been called Halley’s comet, in his honour.

A. Halley and other scientists

Everyone is at it, even my neighbors. I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn’t done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction(拍卖)
Buying for beginners: Sign up on www.ebay. . Most items (e.g. tables, computers, and books) ready for auction will come with a picture and a short description ; others may be marked with “Buy It Now” and have a fixed price. You can buy these right away.
If the item is being auctioned , you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids(出价)for you. The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are e-mailed and asked if you would liked to bid again. Auction last up to 10 days and when they finish you get an e-mail telling you whether you have won the item.
How to pay: Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a cheque or postal orders. The easiest way is through Paypal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card.
Selling made simple: If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to introduce a picture of the item. I followed my friends’advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Friday . This way buyers had two weekends to bid.
The big things in life: It’s easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collected or sent by deliverymen. Check the ways of delivery before you bid.
53. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to make payment online
B. Ways of making delivery online
C. Advantages of an online-auction system
D. How to use an online-auction system

A.have their pictures shown on the website.
B.be marked with “Buy It Now”
C.have a fixed price
D. be sold right away
55. After bidding for an item, a buyer _________.
A.will get what he wants in 10 days.
B.should make payment immediately
C.has chances to make higher bids
D.may check its picture and description
56. The easiest way of making payment mentioned in the passage is ________
A.through an online payment system
B.through a local banking system
C.by sending the money to the seller
D.by paying the deliveryman directly

Suppose your assignment is to write a paper on a novel called “The Sun Also Rises” by American writer Hemingway. The first step is to go to the main catalog(目录). On the upper left corner of each card is the call number. This is the numerical(数字的)code that shows where the book is located in the library. The library has open and closed stacks(书库)If your book is on the open stacks, you can go to the open-stack room , and according to the call number, find it out by yourself.

For undergraduates like you, borrowing from closed stacks has to be done with the help of our librarian. In that case, you must fill out a call slip(纸条)for the book, showing the number call , author and title. You can get the call slip together with your library card to a librarian at the information desk. He or she will help you find the book out in the closed stacks.

Wealth and Health
Which is more important, wealth or health? Different people have different opinions.
Some people prefer wealth, holding that money can not bring everything, but without it, one can do nothing. In order to accumulate more money, they can do anything. However, other people regard health as more important. Once health is lost, it is no use having a lot of money.
As far as I am concerned, I love wealth, but I value health more. Everybody wants to live a happy life. So they try their best to earn money with which they can ensure they lead a comfortable life. But if happiness and comfort are achieved at the cost of their health, how can they be happy? Without health, money becomes meaningless.
In my opinion, no one agrees that a wealth person without good health can be happy. So, just do our best and keep fit.
