I'd always loved to sing and had signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when started stuttering(口吃).I consulted speech experts but it didn't help. I did everythingI could to rid my stutter, but nothing changed. I was very confused. If I couldn't bring myself to speak in class, how would I be able to sing in the school talent show? I decided to practice at home. To my amazement, the words came smoothly when I sang. My stutter disappeared. I felt so free on stage performing in the talent show. After that, I joined my school team and began learning how to play the guitar.By the summer I was 16, severe anxiety and depression set in. My stutter had bee my entire identity, and I was afraid to talk at all. I didn't tell anyone how I was feeling. One burning hot August afternoon, I went to the basement for the coolness, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar I had gotten for my thirteenth birthday. I pic ked it up and started playing it casually. Then I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out.Last year, I started college at Liberty University in Lynchburg,Virginia, where I'm majoring in music production. When I saw the America's Got Talent announ cement pop up on my puter, I signed up. A couple of months later, there I was—standing on that huge stage in Pasadena, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself tothe America's Got Talent judges and audience.“I have a bit of speech disorder,〞I told everyone there. “It was definitely something that caused me to.…〞I took a long pause to find the words. “…to shy away, to hide. But I found that I don't stutter when I sing.〞Then I launched into a new song I'd written, titled Back to Life. I tried to focus on the music, not all the eyes on me. And just as I'd said, there was no stutter at all.

One warm Autumn day, Jane drove to Cincinnati to stay with her friends for Thanksgiving Day. After the holiday, she drove back together with Sam, her eight-year-old son.On the way, unexpectedly, it began snowing. It had never snowed so early in this area. The bad weather made Jane upset. And she was more upset when thinking of her husband, a firefighter. He had lost his life not long before when helping a family put out a big fire.Sad, Jane tried to calm herself and continued driving ahead. However, the weather turned worse. The snow danced violently in the air and her small car frequently skidded (打滑)on the highway. She drove slowly and carefully, in case of any accident. To check whether her son was alright, through the mirror in front of her, she had a look at him in the back seat, with a pair of crutches (拐杖)nearby, which he was temporarily using due to an injured ankle.Seeing her son was just sleeping, Jane quickly took her sight away from him; she needed to find a place to stop. She knew due to the small wheels, her car would soon be unable to make it through the snowy road with more and more snow. Then, through the white dancing snow, she saw her salvation (救星)——a green sign r eading “Rest Area”. She thought finally she found a place where she could wait out the snowstorm. She pulled over, noticing the car's gas needle was nearly empty. "It doesn't matter as long as we have a warm place to stay,“ she whispered. Then, she parked in the lot where a big truck stopped. She left her son sleeping in the back seat and she went to check out the inside. As she struggled to walk through the snow towards a brown building, she found there were no lights on. She went to the door, only to find it locked. It was the only rest stop for miles but they couldn't get in. Jane's heart sank. Whatever strength had been holding her一since her husband's death-disappeared.Paragraph 1:She sat in the snow and couldn 7 help weeping.Paragraph 2:"Let me drive you to the nearest hotel J the truck driver smiled gently.1.
Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity.I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, wellequipped with pens, a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen ... At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often — only of objects I find really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don’t want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won’t have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I’ll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don’t live to make memories — I just live, and the memories form themselves.

Camping CousinsMy cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes! After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt. Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation.________ Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest.___________________________________ (一)梳理原文信息 对原文进行分析时,应重点关注原文中的故事主题、环境、人物、情节等要素。

The government recently reported that a record number of rhinos were poached in 2014, a year which had more rhino killings in South Africa than ever before. The World Wildlife Fund, or WWF, says about 20,000 rhinos live in South Africa. That is more than 80 percent of the rhinos in the world. Edna Molewa,South Africa’s environmental issues minister, says, “During 2014, we are sad to say this: 1,215 rhinos were killed. This is a rise in the number of poached rhinos from 1004 in 2013 and indeed very worrying.”The animals are hunted for their horns(犀牛角).Many people in Asia believe the horn has curing power, which drives poachers, at all costs, mad for more horns. But there is no scientific evidence for this belief. The horn is made of keratin. That is the same thing as human hair, fingernails and toenails.Ms. Molewa said 386 suspected poachers were arrested last year, an increase from the year before. But rhino protection workers say poachers often go unpunished after arrest.South Africa’s legal system is ineffective.Ms. Molewa said more needs to be done and South Africa is taking strong measures to protect rhinos. For years, my wife Teresa taught physical education at the elementary school level. Travelling on a regular schedule to the six schools in her district, she had a chance to get to know most of the kids in the area and see them at their best and their worst. One day, in her class, Teresa noticed a third-grade girl, Meagan, who was short and grossly overweight, with a closed and hopeless look on her face. Meagan always sat alone in class, played alone at break, and ate alone from a recycled paper sack at lunch. The teachers and staff were kind to Meagan, but the students were not.The stories made your shoulders drop. Teresa heard that when the playground supervisors (管理员) turned their backs, kids would run up to Meagan, calling her “Meagan the Fat Pig.” They did far worse than isolate (孤立) her; they filled her school days and walks home with physical and emotional torment(折磨). Also, Meagan’s single mother, a hard-working woman, was trying her best to make ends meet but she had never made it before.Meagan’s situation disturbed my wife deeply. After talking with the principle and other teachers, Teresa came up with an idea. She knew from talking to Meagan that the child had never had a pet. Teresa was sure a pet would be the perfect way to inject some high-powered love and acceptance into Meagan’s life.So one Saturday afternoon, Meagan was invited to Teresa’s office. When the door buzzer sounded, a dog engaged in a predictable and vigorous welcome. Getting down on one knee, Teresa introduced herself to Meagan. She told Meagan her thought that she could take away a puppy if she liked. Like any creature that has been cared about,Meagan gleamed in her eyes and playfully lifted the puppy almost off the ground. That day Meagan left the office with the puppy.
