第I卷

Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)

Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:

Put an ice cube from your fridge into a glass of water. You have a piece of string(线) 10 centimeters long. The problem is to take out that piece of ice with the help of the string. But you must not touch the ice with your fingers.

(82) You may ask your friends to try to do that when you are having dinner together. There is a saltcellar on the table. You must use salt when you carry out this experiment.

First you put the string across the piece of ice. Then put some salt on the ice. Salt makes ice melt(融化). The ice round the string will begin to melt. But when it melts, it will lose heat. The cold ice cube will make the salt water freeze again. After a minute or two you may raise the piece of string and with it you will raise your piece of ice!

This experiment can be very useful to you. If, for example, there is ice near the door of your house, you must use very much salt to melt all the ice. If you don’t put enough salt, the water will freeze again.

1. We must use _______ when we carry out this experiment.

B. Take out the ice cube in the glass of water with the help of the string.

C. Take out the ice cube in the glass of water with your fingers.

D. Put some salt on the ice cube and then put the string across it.

4. How many things at least are used in this experiment?

A. Three.

B. Four.

C. Six.

D. Seven.

5. We can learn something about _______ from the passage.

A. Physics

B. Biology

C. Chemistry

D. Maths

Passage 2

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:

There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. (82) In contrast, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over.

The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied. Henning studied how students who are leaning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.

To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered, each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally, the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower efficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

6. Henning made the experiment in order to study______.

A. how students remember English vocabulary by short-term memory

B. how students learn English vocabulary

C. how to develop students’ ability in English

D. how long information in short-term memory is kept

7. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Information in short-term memory is different from that in long-term memory.

B. Long-term memory can be achieved only by training.

C. It is easier to test short-term memory than long-term memory.

D. Henning gave a separate test on vocabulary to his students.

8. From Hennin g’s result we can se e that______.

A. beginners have difficulty distinguishing the pronunciation of words

B. advanced students remember words by their meaning

C. it is difficult to remember words that sound alike

D. it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning

9. The word “subjects” in the passage means______.

A. memory

B. the theme of listening material

C. a branch of knowledge studied

D. the students experimented on

10. The passage centers on __________.

A. memory

B. two kinds of memory

C. short-term memory

D. an experiment on students

Passage 3

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

Did you know that the empty plastic soft drink bottles you throw away every day can be turned into carpet or automobile parts, that used glass bottles and aluminum (铝) cans can be turned into new ones, and that yesterday’s newspaper can be turned into to morrow’s?

It all happens because of recycling. The simple waste we throw away is a “natural resource only 10% of its ru bbish, burns 10% and deposits (存放) 80% in waste disposal (处理) grounds. As a result, it has to cope with a serious solid waste problem. Every year, Americans throw away about 160 million tons of rubbish. Of that total, plastics make up less than 8%, paper about 36%, and glass and metal about 20%, all by weight. Plastic are naturally lighter, but still, when pressed together, account for only about 20% by volume. As a result, in the past 10 years the Unites States’ waste disposal grounds have decreased from about 18,500 to 6,000. In five years 2,000 more will close.

(83) In the process of finding solution, some people have proposed to stop using plastics. Unfortunately, stop using

plastics would do much harm and no good. We would lose all of the safety, health and convenience features of plastics. Besides, packaging would still be needed. A 1987 study shows what would happen if plastics were not used, the energy needed to produce other packaging, its cost, and the volume of waste collected would all rise greatly. Some Americans believe part of the answer t o American’s waste problem lies in recycling everything fro m glass to metals to paper to plastics.

Today, recycling is on the rise. There are now more than 1,000 waste recycling programs in the U.S. Many are beginning to recycling plastics. Right now, almost 200 companies are recycling millions of used plastic containers into toys, traffic signs, waste baskets, floor materials, and park benches. Plastics are among the easiest materials to recycle. More than 150 million pounds or 20% of all plastic soft drink bottles were recycled in 1987.

11. What can’t the plastic soft drink bottles be turned into?

A) Newspapers. B) Automobile parts. C) Toys D) traffic signs.

12. On average, waste plastics are ________ other wastes.

A) as heavy in density as B) heavier in density than

C) lighter in density than D) the same by weight as

13. The U.S. reused ________ of all its plastic soft drink bottles in 1987.

A) 8% B) 10% C) 20% D) 80%

14. In five years, the U.S. will have only ________ waste disposal grounds.

A) 2,000 B) 6,000 C) 4,000 D) 18,500

15. The author of this passage ________ the proposal of stopping using plastics.

A) says nothing about B) is sympathetic with

C) agrees to D) disagrees to

Passage 4

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

(84) “Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise.” said Dr. Hans Selye, the first physician to document the effects of stress on the body. While here’s on question that continuous stress is harmful, several studie s suggest that challenging situations in which you’re able to rise to the occasion can be good for you. In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but coped with the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they couldn’t get the job done.

(84) Stress that you can manage may also boost immune (免疫的) function. In a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiences. In the first, a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test, subjects believed they had control over the outcome. In the second, they weren’t in control: They had to sit through a gory (血淋淋的) video on surgical (外科手术的) procedures. Those who did well on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglo bulin A, an antibody that’s the body’s first line of defense against germs. The video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody.

Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones (荷尔蒙). In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory function. “They can help nerve cells handle information and put it into storage,” says Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York. But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.

“Sustained stress is not good for you,”says Richard Morimoto, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on longevity (长寿), “It’s the occasional burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective.”

A) people under stress tend to have a poor memory

B) people who can’t get their job done experience more stress

C) doing challenging work may be good for one’s health

D) stress will weaken the bo dy’s defense against germs

19. In the experiment described in Paragraph 3, the video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody because______.

A) the video was not enjoyable at all

B) the outcome was beyond their control

C) they knew little about surgical procedures

D) they felt no pressure while watching the video

20. Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University believes that______.

Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus

It is necessary for college students to know the world outside the campus. This is because in this "Information Age" the society is developing so fast that we should keep pace with the progress of the outside world. Therefore, without knowledge of the outside world, it will be difficult for us to ensure an ideal job after graduation; it will be more difficult for us to succeed in the fierce competition.

How to know the outside world? First of all, we should be well-informed about what is happening around us with the help of mass media: radios, televisions, newspapers, the Internet, and so on. Moreover, we should do some practical social services so as to cultivate our social skills, widen our horizon and enrich our social experience.

As for me, I plan to know the outside world in two ways. I am going to do a part-time job in this summer vocation. In addition, I hold the idea that getting knowledge from books is a better method to know the outside world.

Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus

Most Chinese students go to college with the idea that they can obtain sufficient knowledge and ability in the "Ivory Tower" so long as they work hard, while the fact is, it is far from enough.

Studying without knowing the world outside the campus will make the study of the book knowledge itself aimless. Therefore, we may surely find it hard to adapt ourselves to the society when we graduate. So, it's absolutely necessary for college students to learn about the society.

There are various ways to do so. We may positively get to know the society by taking part in social services, such as being a tutor or working part-time in a company; we may travel around and see the nation during holidays with financial support; or we may be well-informed of what is on in the outside world without stepping out of the campus with the help of mass media.

How to Solve the Energy Problem

Energy is one of the biggest problems people are faced with today. If we keep consuming them at the present rate, a serious energy crisis is sure to threaten mankind’s survival in the future, s ince natural resources are limited.

Many people have expressed their demands for more severe conservation of our natural resources. This is urgently necessary, indeed. It must be realized that much of our energy, in the form of oil, coal, or gas, has been wasted. If things go on like this, we will leave our descendants a devastated world, a vast stretch of waste land. So, from now on, we will have to make serious efforts to develop energy-saving economy so as to slow down the present drain on our limited resources.

But conservation alone is not all the answer. The best way to solve the energy problem is, I think, to develop new sources of energy. It is obvious that, even if we save much energy by using it carefully, our natural resources, however abundant, will run out ultimately, for resources cannot reproduce themselves. Therefore, to find new supplies in unexplored areas seems to be the only way out.

Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage One Questions 1~5 are besed on the following passage. Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucius Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统)and keeping the blooding pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man in the country who has not gone through this process --- sometimes six or seven times. 1. The word “matchmaking” in the passage means ____. A. a very formal ritual(仪式)attended by boys and girls B. introducing boys and girls to know each other for the purpose of marriage C. producing matches to make a fire or light a cigarette D. arranging games between men and women 2. The fact that the first meeting is repeated again and again in coffee shops in the main hotels suggests that ____. A. Koreans like drinking coffee in coffee shops very much B. men and women want to meet as many times as possible C. they are busy with communicating with different people D. marriage is seen as a business contract instead of something sacred

江苏专转本英语真题及答案

江苏省2012 年普通高校专转本统一英 语考试 第一卷(共100 分) Part I Reading Comprehension(共20 题,每题 2 分,共40 分) Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS. The technique stops the AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood, it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes (淋巴细胞). The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes, then forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic (基因的)material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from spreading by preventing virus from connecting to T4 cells. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell, it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to the cloned protein instead of the real ones. Scientists use the genetic engineering methods to make the clones. Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times. The AIDS virus must go to it.In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell. It floats freely, so many more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 proteins on T4 cells. One report says the AIDS virus connects to the cloned proteins j ust as effectively as to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning t o be tested in animals. If successful, it may be tested in humans within a year. 1. The new technique can ________. A. cure AIDS B. kill the AIDS virus C. prevent the AIDS virus from spreading D. produce new medicines for AIDS 2. When the AIDS virus enters the blood, it is reproduced by ________. A. the inside of the virus itself B. any blood cells in the body C. the CD4 protein D. the genetic material of T4 cells 3 The AIDS virus connects to cloned proteins instead of to the real ones because ________. A. the cloned proteins stay on the T4 cells B. the cloned proteins can float freely in the blood C. it connects to cloned proteins more effectively than to the real ones D. the cloned proteins are made by genetic engineering methods 4. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The new technique has been tested in labs. B. The new technique is being tested in animals. C. The new technique may be tested in humans. D. People and the sources of air pollution are found in the same place. This means that cities with large population have the biggest problem of dirty air. This energy is needed to make electricity. Of course, much more electricity is used in the city than in the country. On the average, we throw away trash and garbage than years before. The fumes from iron, steel, chemical, and petroleum production add particles (粉尘) to the air. The effects of air pollution range from mild headaches to death. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. When Mrs. Joseph Groeger died recently in Vienna, Austria, people asked the obvious question. “W hy did she live to be 107?” Answers were provided by a survey conducted among 148 Viennese men and women who had reached the age of 100. What was surprising was that the majority had lived most of their lives in cities. Although cities are often regarded as unhealthy places, city living provides benefits that country living may lack. One factor seems to be important to the longevity(长寿) of those interviewed. This factor is exercise. In the cities it is often faster to walk short distances than to wait for a bus. Even taking public transportation often requires some walking. Smaller apartment houses have no elevators, and so people must climb stairs. City people can usually walk to local supermarkets. Since parking spaces are hard to find, there is often no choice but to walk. On the other hand, those who live in the country and suburbs do not have to walk every day. In fact, the opposite is often true. To go to school, work, or almost anywhere else, they must ride in cars. 1.The Vienna survey may help to explain __________. 江苏专转本英语真题与答案

2006年江苏省普通高校“专转本”统一考试大学英语 第I卷(共100分) Part I Reading Comprehension (共20小题,每小题2分,共40分) Passage 1 Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a meaningful activity. Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families. Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables are superior to those purchased from markets. Form spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area. Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening. One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyed and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of one day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house, so the garden can work in it whenever they are free.
