说说英语词汇的文化介绍

语言是文化的载体，学习语言不可避免地会接触到与之有关的文化。在中学英语教学中，教师应努力培养学生的文化习得意识，使文化规范的教学与语言技能的培养同步进行词汇教学与文化渗透。
英语词汇在长期的使用中积累了丰富的文化意义，所以在教学中，我们要注重对英语词汇的文化意义的介绍，以防学生单纯从词汇本身做主观评价。教材中有很多与文化有关的词汇可挖掘，如“name，old，dog，pork，beef，look out，breakfast，take away food，sports，Christmas”以及表示颜色的词等。对这些具有文化背景意义的词汇，除讲清其概念意义外，还要介绍它们所包含的文化背景知识，有时还可适当扩展知识内容,顺便讲一些相关的外国风俗习惯等。
在中学英语教学过程中不可避免地会遇到一些具有文化背景意义的词汇，我们应做有心人，随时给予介绍，使学生达到真正掌握英语的目的。
一、课文教学与文化解读
由于目前中学还没有开设文化背景知识方面的专门课程，所以只能按教材，涉及到什么讲什么，帮助学生从中获取英语国家文化背景知识和信息，提高学生的语言交际能力，使他们不至于由于对目的语文化缺乏了解而造成交际失误。例如，在讲授“What do English people eat?”时，我们就可以将西方的价值观、人生观和生活方式渗透到教学中，增加对西方社会的了解。在西方，人们将“成功”作为人生的一大追求，他们爱工作，视时间为金钱，所以大街上人们都行走匆匆，过着快节奏的生活，以致“吃饭”问题在他们看来倒显得无足轻重了，这与我国“民以食为天”的传统观念是不同的。所以像课本中出现的“hamburger，sandwich，chips，fried chicken”等take-food就应运而
生，且大有愈演愈烈之势。
在中国，人们询问体重、年龄、收入、婚姻等似乎是常事，但在英美等国家，这些“privacy”都是尽力回避的。特别是女士们,对体重和身材是很敏感的，她们认为说某人“胖了”是对别人不尊重，是不礼貌的语言行为。所以，这里医生只能委婉地说道:“You’re eating too much.” 以此避免使用“You are getting fat”，并建议：“You have to eat less food，and you also have to take more exercise.”
此外，我们还可指导学生从课文注释和插图中习得有关文化知识。教材的课文注释不仅仅局限于语言难点及其翻译，而且增加了一定的文化背景知识。例如课文有这样的注释: 英国人喝茶和中国人习惯不同，英国人通常在茶（多为红茶) 里加糖或牛奶，或两样都加，而中国人一般什么都不加，习惯喝清茶。在此基础上，我们应向学生进一步补充解释:“红茶”译成英文为“black tea”，而不要望文生义地译成“red tea”。图文并茂是新教材的一大特色，有些插图除帮助学生理解课文外，还可以从中习得有关的文化知识。如第二册教材中一幅插图是一群英国人在寒冷的冬天排队等公共汽车，人与人之间保持一定的间隔。这说明他们除办事讲求公共秩序外，还注意维护属于自己的空间，也注意不侵犯别人的空间。这是他们注意“个人隐私权”的反映，实质上也是对课文中“You must never jump the queue.If you jump the queue，other people will not be pleased! ”最好的解释。
二、直观教学与文化体验
充分利用一切可用的教学手段，创造一个文化语言环境,能使学生自觉或不自觉地体验异国的文化氛围。可以通过收集和利用一些有关英语国家的物品和图片，让学生获得较为直接的文化知识，了解外国艺术、雕刻、建筑风格和风土人情。可利用电影和电视引导学生注意观察英语国家的社会文化等各方面的情况: 各阶层人们吃什么，穿什么，住什么样的房子，如何与朋友交往，进行什么娱乐活动，什么节日对他们最重要，在节日如何庆祝，以及说话的表情、手势等。如在西方文化中，人们通常用拥抱或接吻的方式向他人表示祝贺，而在大多数的东方国家里，人们是用握手的方式来向他人表示祝贺。这样富有情趣的对比观察，有利于学生体验和感受英语国家的文化，排除民族文化差异的偏见，培养尊重他人的民族习惯，以期达到语言、情感上的沟通。此外，还可以组织英语角、英语知识讲座、英语晚会等。这些做法无疑给学生提供了很大的帮助。
三、中西比较与文化习得
初中英语新大纲明确规定:“为了确定教学重点和难点,教师可采用英语同母语对比的方法。”越来越多的中学英语教师意识到中西文化差异是教学中的重点和难点之一。中西文化差异的比较不仅有利于学生增强对交际文化的敏感性,而且对更好地了解中华民族文化是大有裨益的。因此，在教学中,可以采取比较的方法把教材涉及到的内容分为两类: 一是衣、食、住、行方面的，包括购物、食品、交通、学校、家庭等; 二是日常交际方面的，包括问候、称呼、道别、致谢、建议等。
此外，我们还应注意英美文化差异的比较。例如: 在建议表达上，英国人说：“Let’s go! ”(我们走吧!) 美国人说:“Shall we leave?”(我们可以走了吗? ) 他们认为“Let’s go”有命令之意，很不礼貌。因此，我们在讲授“Shall we go to the park?”时,就应该让学生注意“Shall we…”和“Let’s…”作为两种不同建议的表达方法在使用上的区别。但在比较中应让学生注意正确对待异国文化，既要防止对异国文化过高评价，也要防止民族中心主义。
总之，文化教学跟语言教学一样，没有定法可言，但是教学有法，只要我们认真研究，一定能找出更多更好的文化习得方法。

中英文颜色词的文化内涵和翻译 【摘要】由于汉语和英语两种语言的文化差异，许多词汇蕴涵了不同的民族感情色彩，在翻译和交际过程中可能产生偏差和误解。本文以颜色词汇为例分析解读了颜色词汇的不同文化内涵和感情色彩，以此达到增强语言交际能力、避免文化冲突的目的。 【关键词】颜色；词汇；文化差异；文化内涵 Abstract: Owing to the cultural difference between Chinese and English, words are embedded with different national feeling, which would result in misunderstanding even wrong translation in the course of communication. 对颜色的认知，是人类最基本的认知范畴之一。虽然各种语言表达颜色的词汇数量差别较大，但是基本词汇，如黑、白、红、黄、绿、蓝等，在很多语言中都是相通的。不过，由于各民族文化风俗、地理位置、历史传统、宗教信仰、民族心理、思维习惯等方面差异，颜色词语有时表现出各民族独特的“个性”，带有显著的文化烙印。比如巴西人忌讳绿色，日本人忌讳黄色，泰国人忌讳红色，比利时人忌讳蓝色，土耳其人忌讳花色，欧美国家大多忌讳黑色。颜色在不同的民族文化中承载了不同的内涵。某些词汇包含多项文化内涵,其中某一个文化内涵可能与译入语完全契合,某一个可能部分对应,而另一个可能相互冲突。比如中文中，说一个人妒忌的“眼红”，英语却说“眼绿”－green-eyed。我们以颜色词为例，看看英汉词汇文化内涵转换的多样性。 RED(红色) 1．red 英汉中相同的文化内涵 无论是在英语国家还是在中国，红色往往与庆祝活动或喜庆日子有关。因为日历中，这些日子常用红色字体。 英: red letter day：指的是“纪念日”或“喜庆的日子”。

第3卷第3期2001年7月 北京邮电大学学报(社会科学版) Journal of BU PT(Social Sciences Editi on) V o l13,N o13 July,2001 ?文学视野? 关于英语词汇文化内涵的思考 徐 静 (北京邮电大学语言学院,北京 100876) 摘 要:本文探讨了英语词汇的文化内涵,首先定义了何为英语词汇的文化内涵,接着从古希腊神话、圣经以及英语文学作品和英语民族的风俗习惯着手,多方面地对文化内涵进行了论述,最后指出应如何对英语词汇进行文化内涵方面的种种思考。 关键词:英语词汇;文化;文学;神话;风俗习惯 中图分类号:H31205 文献标识码:A 文章编号:100827729(2001)0320059203 一、注重英语词汇文化内涵的现实意义 虽然现在风行人工智能及多种电子字典,但是对于如何翻译一个汉语词汇或单字却不能提供很多的选择,它们永远也不能给你提供一个最佳的选择,因为人工智能及电子字典还远远没有丰富的文化意识。这里所要谈的问题正是对英语词汇文化内涵的思考。语言是文化的基石,没有语言就没有文化。反之,语言又受文化的影响,反映文化。语言学家邓炎昌说过:“语言是文化的载体,并对文化起着重要的作用。”而词汇是语言的基本要素,是语言大系统赖以生存的支柱。因此经过一定的英语词汇学习之后,必须要对学习提出进一步的要求,即对词汇的文化内涵进行思考,否则对很多英语词汇很难达到真正的掌握。 二、对英语词汇文化内涵的具体分析 英语词汇的文化内涵是指英语词汇与英语国家的历史背景、文化、传统、风俗习惯、生产方式及生活细节等多方面相关联的含义或附加意义。英语词汇的来源和用法多种多样,有的源于希腊神话,有的源于圣经故事,有的出自莎士比亚的戏剧,同时还有源于法语、西班牙语或意大利语的。这些词在长期的使用中其意义或扩大或缩小,同时由于在某些场合的使用而逐渐积累了联想的意义,也就是积累了词汇的文化内涵,而这一点在字典上一般是查不到的。本文主要从希腊神话、文学和风俗习惯三个方面对英语词汇的文化内涵进行了探讨,希望起到抛砖引玉的作用。 11源于希腊神话的英语单词 古希腊是西方文明的摇篮,希腊神话便是古希腊文化遗产中的一块瑰宝。虽然科学的发展扼杀了神话的继续产生,正如诗人雪莱在知道了雪花的科学成份以后再也写不出歌唱雪花圣洁、雪白的诗歌一样,但是古希腊神话作为一种文化遗产却被继承了下来,并对西方文化,尤其是对西方文学产生了渊源流长的影响。希腊神话中人物的名字往往作为独立的词汇流传至今,并在文学作品或日常生活中广泛使用。 N arcissu s原为希腊神话中的一位美少年。在古代没有镜子,N arcissu s只能站在水边欣赏自己的容貌。他如此沉浸于自己的美貌,不愿离开水边,最后纵身跳入水中而被溺死。然而上帝可怜这位美貌的少年,于是让他变成了一朵水仙花。这个美丽的希腊神话故事在西方广为流传。最后N arcissu s的名字变为了形容 收稿日期:2001202209 作者简介:徐静(19692),女,四川泸州人,北京邮电大学语言学院讲师,专业方向:文学。 95

文化意识与英语词汇教学 摘要：语言是文化的载体，文化是语言的内容，二者密不可分。而英语词汇是构成英语的基本要素，它被深深打上了英语国家的文化烙印，这就要求英语词汇教学中适时介绍英语文化知识，提高英语文化素养，培养学生的跨文化意识，实现其交流的顺畅。本文就从我国词汇教学的现状、词汇教学科学合理的方法以及词汇教学中培养跨文化意识的重要性三个方面具体地阐述了这一问题。 关键词：文化意识;英语词汇教学;文化差异 一、我国词汇教学的现状 词汇是语言的建筑材料，没有词汇就没有语言。研究表明，外语教学的成败在很大程度上取决于词汇教学的效果：包括学生词汇学习策略、词汇运用能力以及词汇量的掌握。因此，词汇教学是英语教学中至关重要的环节。然而，在我国英语教学中，词汇教学一直以来都是困扰教师的难点，词汇教学现状也不尽如人意。我国大部分教师，尤其是一些中老年教师，对英语词汇的教学还是处于传统理念和传统模式之下，也就是说词汇教学就是领读、理解表面意思，然后再给出几个例句。这种传统的教学跟不上形势的发展，因为只有在理解词汇的表面意思的基础上还搞清它的文化
内涵，这样在实际交流中才不会形成障碍，才不会犯错误，要改变词汇教学模式为领读、理解表面意思、介绍文化内涵，然后再给出例句，只有这样才能达到领悟词汇的四个维度，也就是词汇知识的广度、词汇知识的深度、词汇知识运用的精确度和词汇知识运用的自动化程度，才不会在跨文化交际中出现语用失误，闹出笑话。 二、词汇教学科学合理的方法 1.教师要树立传授文化意识的理念 教师在英语教学实践中必须树立传授文化意识的理念，让学生了解英美文化背景、风俗和习惯，为语言赋予文化内涵，以便让学生更容易理解掌握和接受。 2.采用直接介绍法 我国的学生学习英语缺乏真实具体的语言环境，他们英语知识的主要来源是教师调控的课堂。基于这种情况，教师适合通过直接介绍法把词汇所承载的文化信息讲解给学生听，这是词汇教学与文化教学二者结合最常用最便捷的方法之一。尤其可以把中国的春节与西方国家的圣诞节进行比较，在教室里尽量给学生营造一种浓郁的具有西方文化氛围的环境。以便拓宽学生的视野，增强对文化概念的理解。这样，通过直接介绍法并且营造真实语境，既增加了学生词汇学习的趣味性，又介绍了西方文化知识，还潜移默化地影响着学生跨文化意识的形成。
