Migrant Workers
In the past twenty years, there has been an increasing tendency for workers to move from one country to another. __ 1 __ some newly independent countries have understandably restricted most jobs to local people, others have attracted and welcomed migrant workers. This is particularly the case in the Middle East,1 __ 2 __ increased oil incomes have enabled many countries to __ 3 __ outsiders to improve local facilities. __ 4 __ the Middle East has attracted oil-workers from the USA and Europe. It has brought in construction workers and technicians from many countries, __ 5 __ South Korea and Japan.
In view of the difficult living and working conditions in the Middle East, 2 it is not __ 6 __ that the pay is high to attract suitable workers. Many engineers and technicians can earn at least __7__ money in the Middle East as they can in their own country, and this is a major attraction. An allied benefit is the low taxation or complete lack of it. 3 This increases the net amount of pay received by visiting workers and is very popular with them.
Sometimes a disadvantage has a compensating advantage. __ 8__, the difficult living conditions often lead to increased friendship when workers have to depend on each other __ 9 __ safety and comfort. __ 10 __, many migrant workers can save large sums of money partly__ 11 __ the lack of entertainment facilities. The work is often complex and full of problems but this merely presents greater challenge to engineers who prefer to find solutions __ 12 __ problems rather than do routine work in their home country.
One major problem which __ 13 __ migrant workers in the Middle East is that their jobs are temporary ones. They are nearly always on contract, so it is not easy for them to plan ahead with great confidence.

Many Women Who Beat Cancer Don't Change Habits
Many women who battle breast cancer will tell you it's a life-changing experience. However, a new study shows that for many 1, the changes aren't always positive or permanent1.
Beth Snoke has watched her mother and both grandmothers battle and survive breast 2 .So when she was diagnosed, there was no doubt in her mind 3 she had to do.
"I do exactly what the doctors say as far as the medicine that I'm on, as 4 as the vitamins, the diet, and the fitness. And I can't stress enough 5 important that is,"
says Beth Snoke. But a surprising new study shows that 6 every woman who beats breast cancer is getting that message. In fact, nearly 40% of them say even 7 surviving breast cancer, they haven't made significant changes in the 8 they eat or how much they exercise.
"Not all survivors are taking advantage of this teachable moment and making positive health changes in 9 life," says Electra Paskett, PhD, at Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center. Paskett says diet and exercise have been proven to not only help women feel better during and after treatment, they may 10 play a role in preventing some cancers from coming back. 11 growing evidence, some women just aren't listening.
"Colon cancer survivors 12 exercise have actually been shown to have improved survival rates. So, yes, it is true that perhaps by making some of these healthy choices we can actually increase their health," says Paskett.
As a breast cancer survivor 13 , Paskett knows first hand how much difference diet and exercise can 14 The challenge, she says, is to get more survivors to be more like Beth, during and after treatment.
Experts say exercising more and eating a healthier diet can also cut 15on2 stress and help women overcome depression. There are more than 2 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. Of those, nearly a million have yet to change their diet or exercise routines.

”Paskett
The Difference between Man and Computer
What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don't yet (1) ______ for? The answer is simple: People read newspaper stories for a reason: to learn more about (2) ______ they are interested in. Computers, on the other hand, don't. In fact, computers don't (3) ______ have interests; there is nothing in particular that they are trying to find out when they read. If a computer (4) ______ is to be a model of story understanding, it should also read for a "purpose".
Of course, people have several goals that do not make (5) ______ to attribute to computers1. One might read a restaurant guide (6) ______ order to satisfy hunger or entertainment goals, or to (7) ______ a good place to go for a business lunch. Computers do not get hungry, and computers do not have business lunches.
However, these physiological and social goals give (8) ______ to several intellectual or cognitive goals. A. goal to
satisfy hunger gives rise to goals to find (9) ______ about the name of a restaurant which (10) ______ the desired type of food, how expensive the restaurant is, the location of the restaurant, etc. These are goals to (11) ______ information or knowledge, what we are calling(12) ______ goals. These goals can be held by computers too; a computer (13) ______ "want" to find out the location of a restaurant, and read a guide in order to do so (14) ______ the same way as a person might. While such a goal would not (15) ______ out of hunger in the case of the computer2, it might well arise out of the "goal" to learn more about restaurants.

4. A computer program
5. B make sense
6. C in order to是固定搭配,表示目的,意为“为了……”,故选C。

If you didn’t eat at all, the body would use up all the stored fats and (9)it would use its own protein in order to keep (10) as long as possible. Therefore, the (11) amount of food you eat should be in (12)with your energy requirements. It is not necessary, (13), for you to count calories and weigh food. UFOS
Sixty years ago, a man named Kenneth Arnold saw something that we can still(51)today-something that changed popular culture for ever.
Flying his plane over mountains in the US state of Washington, he saw a line of strange objects, either crescent-shaped(月牙形的)or disc-like, flying (52) the motion of a saucer(碟)skimming(飞速掠过)on water.
The media soon picked up on the story - the Flying Saucers were here! Was the earth being(53)by creatures from another planet? Soon, So many sightings were made that the US military began to (54). 1t called these strange Objects UFOs - Unidentified Flying Objects, and that is how they are (55)today.
Military investigations found no evidence of visitors from outer space. But that did not stop the true(56). The military were (57)up, they said. Or maybe it was because the travelers
from space were of such superior intelligence (58)they could hide from military analysts(分析家). People have always seen strange lights in the sky. In the past these were explained in (59)ways. In a world where religion was less influential and science fiction was popular, signs from God were replaced by visitors from other(60).
The date of the first UFO sightings was also significant. In l947, World War II had just ended and the(61)War was just beginning. Humanity seemed locked in endless conflicts. Like generations before them, people looked (62)the skies for help. But instead of seeking God, they looked for help from super-intelligent aliens(外星人)with (63)technology. Belief in UFOs became the first religion of science.
However, even people who believe in UFOs are not quite sure why they visit the earth. The universe is a big place and it is (64)to assume that there is life somewhere out there. It is possible that aliens have worked out how to travel through space. Yet some people report that they have been taken by aliens and have had experiments (65)on them. Why would anyone travel across half the universe to conduct medical experiments on people living in small towns in the United States?

People and Race
During recent years we have heard much about "race": how this race does certain things and that race believes certain things and so on. Yet, the whole phenomenon of race consists of a few surface indications.
We judge race usually (1) the coloring of the skin: a white race, a brown race, a yellow race and a black race. But (2)you were to remove the skin you could not tell anything about the race (3) which the individual belonged. There is nothing in physical structure, the brain or the internal organs to (4)a difference.
There are four types of blood. All types are found in every race, and no type is distinct to any race. Human brains are the same. (5) scientists could examine a brain and tell you the race to which the individual belonged. Brains will (6) in size, but this occurs within every race. (7) does size have anything to do with intelligence. The largest brain once examined belonged
to a person of weak (8).On the other hand, some of our most distinguished people have had (9) brains.
Mental tests which are reasonably true show no differences in intelligence between races. High and low test results both can be (10)by different members of any race. (11)equal educational advantages, there will be no difference in average standings, either on account of race or geographical location.
Individuals of every race (12) civilization to go backward or forward. Training and education can change the response of a group of people, and (13)them to behave in a peculiar way.
The behavior and ideals of people change according to circumstances, but they can always go ahead or go on to something new (14)is better and higher than anything (15)the past.
