Ten years ago, when I was in junior school, Mrs. Amatuli was my language teacher. One day at lunch time, I was getting ready to eat my cold fish sandwich as usual and suddenly Mrs. Amatuli asked me if she could buy the sandwich from me. She explained that I could use the money to buy a hot lunch from the cafeteria. I was very pleased. I never bought my lunch from the cafeteria. It was too expensive for my family, and I always carried my lunch and took the bag back home to use again the next day.

Seeing other students went to the cafeteria after class, I felt my heart was filled with admiration. You can imagine how pleased I was when I had the opportunity to buy a hot lunch. Kids always complained about the cafeteria food but I really wished to buy it. When we finished lunch that day, Mrs. Amatuli took me aside and explained why she had bought my sandwich. She said she was a Catholic and Catholics didn’t eat red meat on Fridays—they ate fish on Fridays. From then on, every Friday Mrs. Amatuli bought my fish sandwich and with the money I could get in line with other kids for a hot lunch.

One year later, I knew from a classmate that Mrs. Amatuli was not a Catholic and her family was not rich. She bought my cold sandwich because she knew that a poor girl would be excited at the simple act of having a hot lunch. She wanted to help me! I will never forget her sympathy and generosity. I will be grateful to my dear teacher, Mrs. Amatuli, forever.

The Loneliness in New Zealand report, published by Statistics New Zealand, shows people under 30 are more likely to feel lonely than older people though they may have text, email, Facebook and Twitter.

Philip Walker, spokesman for the General Social Survey, said because it was relatively new and it was hardtop know whether loneliness among young people was a new trend (趋势). But overseas research has found that levels of loneliness in youth today are growing.

Mr Walker said the finding needed more study, including looking at the role of technology and social media. “It could be that people’s expectations of connectedness has gone up, so we expect increased levels of connection,” he said, “While technology like cellphones could help young people stay connected, on the other hand for those who do get cullied (欺负), especially bullied online, it’s quite isolating (孤立的). A lot of the time, it is an important cause of loneliness.”

Figures from dating website FindSomeone also showed more young people were looking for love on line and they were the fastest growing group on the site. Mr. Davies noted that since the report data was collected in 2010 there had been huge growth in smartphones, which meant people were online even more. He believed online tools, such as Skype, could help people stay connected. “People can keep in touch with a wide range of friends from all over the world much more easily now. It’s like you’re sitting in your living room having a chat with them.”

Bernardine Reid, operations committee chairwoman for Samaritans, which operates a free helpline, said many of their calls came from people who were lonely. “It might be that they’ve got some problem, which is like all the things that people would normally talk about with a friend, but people who are alone lack those normal contacts.”

The Statistics New Zealand report also showed people who had not had face- to- face contact with family and friends in the past week were more likely to feel lonely, as were those who lived alone.
