English is dominant in the business world. Some multinational corporations, like Honda in Japan are pushing to make English the official language of the company by 2020. So why should English speakers already working in the US even bother learning something else?

The answer lies in the change taking place in the US job market. Being at least somewhat fluent in another language really does make you more marketable to employers —and that even goes for native English speakers.

Last year, a report from New American Economy found that advertisements for bilingual workers in the US doubled between 2010 and 2015. Some companies have ramped up (增加)the search more than others - a full third of job openings posted by Bank of America in 2015, for example, were for bilingual workers who could speak languages like Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. The report noted that the fastest growth in bilingual listings were for "high prestige jobs" like financial managers, editors and industrial engineers.

"One can imagine a lot of opportunities for Americans that learn Mandarin," says David Lightfoot, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University. ” The need for Americans to learn Chinese is, in some ways, quite powerful because there's so little English spoken in China."

Still, despite the potential payoff, the numbers of Americans learning new languages is still low. A new study from the Pew Research Center published this week found that the US is way behind most European countries in terms of learning languages in school. It found that just 20% of American students are learning another language. The median (中位数)for European students was 92%.

The real solution might lie at home, however. The main way to address monolingualism(单一语言)is to simply start teaching foreign languages earlier in school. "Expose them to languages at a time where they can soak it up - not when they're 12 years old, and certainly not when they're 30 years old," says Lightfoot.

21. Why do native English speakers still need to learn a second language?

A. To fulfill their personal dream in life. '

B. To stay competitive in the job market.

C. To meet the demands of multinational corporations.

D. To communicate better with workers of other nationalities.

22. According to Paragraph 3, the bilingual workers are more likely to. ___________________________ .

A. receive double pay annually

B. be employed by business giants'

C. get higher positions in company

D. seek for more suitable advertisements

23. How to solve the problem of monolingualism according to Lightfoot?

A. Kids should be engaged in learning foreign languages earlier.

B. Governments might push more Americans to be bilingual at home.

C. Schools are supposed to encourage parents to challenge homeschooling.

D. Society can expose teenagers to a foreign language learning atmosphere.

B

The daughter of a friend of mine recently left university and entered into the world of work, taking on a temporary office job. At the end of her first week at work, she phoned home in tears. "It's horrible," she complained to her mother, "there's no time to do anything else, I'm so tired when I get home in the evenings that all I can do is watching TV. And then I have to get up early the next morning and do it all again! If this is what work is like, I don't want to spend my whole life doing it!"

We take it for granted that work must be a major part of our lives - in fact, for many people, it's the primary aspect of our lives. We define ourselves, and other people, by our job roles - "So what do you do? and measure our happiness in terms of how successful we are in these roles. Forty hours a week, 48 hours a year, for up to 50 years - not including traveling time, and the time we spend resting and recovering from the exertion of our working lives.

Of course, if you’re lucky, you might have a job which is fulfilling, which suits your interests and skills, and which you find challenging and stimulating. In that case, your job may provide you with what psychologists call "flow" - a state of intense absorption, which makes you feel engaged and alive. Perhaps the majority of people aren't so lucky and do jobs which are repetitive and boring. But I would argue that, even if your job does provide you with "flow", work should just be an aspect of our lives. Working 40 hours a week makes our lives become narrow and constricted, so that we lose sight of whole vista of possibility. There’s so much to learn in life, ;so many different ways to develop, so many activities to enjoy (including doing nothing), but while we spend so much time working it's difficult to find time and energy for these.

24. What did the daughter of the author's friend complain about?

A. The repetitive and demanding work routine.

B. The challenging and unrealistic working goals.

C. The dull and unapproachable workmates.

D. The excessively long working hours.

25. Which of the following can best replace the underlined "exertion"?

A. Punishment.

B. Threat.

C. Efforts.

D. Rewards.

26. Which of the following is TRUE about “flow” according to the author?

A. The majority of people land on jobs providing "flow"..

B. “Flow" stimulates people to get actively involved in jobs.

C. People should work to the fullest once provided with "flow”.

D. Even with "flow” in jobs people can work intensely.

C

If you don't use it, you lose it. At least, that's how. the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something which does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven't done fora few years, like playing the trumpet. You might find yourself a bit rusty the next time you pick one up or maybe you've forgotten altogether!

Well ,,what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆).However, all is not lost because these days

it's relatively easy to train your brain. Smartphone and apps have put programmes into our hands that can test maintain and even improve our memories, mathematical skills, logic skills and other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains nice and sharp, right?

Well, no. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people thought it was important to play online games, such as puzzles and mind games, the evidence of the benefits was "weak to non-existent". Playing a brain game may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people's daily cognitive abilities. In other words, doing hundreds of sudoku puzzles might make you a sudoku wizard, but it doesn't necessarily improve your ability to do your accounting.

It's not all doom and gloom though. There are other ways to stimulate the old grey matter. Seek out new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, like practising taichi, learning new technologies, art projects or volunteering.

There's more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK has said that brain decline is not inevitable. As long as the activities are " new. to you and require your concentrated attention", they can provide benefits for brain health. So, make haste, get out there and try something new. Maybe it's time to try that hobby you've always wanted to do.

27. How do people normally think of brain training?

A. Nothing can stop our brain from declining. .

B. Overusing our brain may lead to mental illnesses.

C. Brains can be trained with smartphones and apps.

D. Memories can't be improved even with regular practice.

28. The online games play a(an)role in sharpening brains.

A. insignificant

B. essential

C. recognizable.

D. special

29.Which of the following may be James Goodwin's suggestion?

A. Try Sudoku puzzles to improve your mental ability.

B. Take up a new musical instrument to stimulate your brain.

C. Ignore the brain decline as it is unavoidable.

D. Challenge yourself to focus your attention on mind games.

30. What is the best title for the text?

A. Brain decline: inevitable or not?

B. Overwork your brain:, curse or blessing?

C. Do we spend too much time on smartphones?

D. Do brain training games actually work?

第二节(共5个小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Many students feel they need to listen to music, while they study or revise, believing it helps them "concentrate better'. Others need silence to function best during work or study. So is it really true that listening to music helps students study better? 31 "Here's what science has to say about it.

The Mozart Effect? Can music really help a person study better? In 1993, Dr Gordon Shaw reported that a group of college students increased their. IQ levels as much as nine points as a result of listening to Mozart's music. He called it, the Mozart Effect. Ten years after the theory became wildly popular; a team of researchers gathered the results from almost 40 studies. 32 So some now call it the Mozart myth.

What about the mood? Does music improve moods? 33 According to research, listening to music triggers the release of dopamine(多巴胺)in our brains. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (神经递质)that promotes feelings of happiness and excitement. Studies have found that people may be better at solving problems when they are in a positive mood compared to when they are in a negative mood.

34 Several studies show that students who listen to music while completing tasks such as reading and writing tend to be less efficient, and don't absorb much information compared to those who don't listen to music. In addition, loud or 'angry' music has negative effects on reading comprehension, as well as moods: This makes them less efficient on the tasks.

In summary, if you find listening to music a distraction, it's best not to try using it as a way to make you. a smarter student. However, if it puts you in a pleasant mood, then try playing soothing music without lyrics, so it doesn't prevent you from studying efficiently, 35

A. It can slow down learning,

B. Or is it really a distraction they're not aware of?

C. It really depends on the individual and what works for you.

D. These are the best genres of music to listen to while you study.

E. Students are more focused and motivated when they are in a good mood.

F. They found zero evidence that IQ levels can increase when listening to classics,

G. Listening to music can make you a happier person, as it releases pleasurable emotions:

I’m originally from Orange County, California, where I had the pleasure and honor of serving as a Newport Beach ocean lifeguard for five seasons. Whenever I could, I got shifts working the Point. If you wanted to save lives, that's where you worked. The Point was known for its massive rip currents((激流)So, late in a shift, I was working Tower 15. Two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working Tower 17. I'd known Mike for a number of years. Mike had a rough upbringing. You can tell just by looking at him. He has a number of really frightening tattoos (纹身),and his bald head shows the scar he got from a broken beer bottle. Maybe he wasn't the friendliest guard on the beach. I admit, I didn't really get along with Mike. But everything he lacked in friendly appearance and social skills, he more than made up for in lifesaving ability.

He called me over the phone and said, “Hey, I got a couple kids. I gotta go give’ em a warning. Keep an eye on us. ”

I said, "Sure, " and hung up.

Anytime you get out of your tower, you're supposed to let somebody else know, in case a situation develops. And sure enough, as soon as he hung up the phone, a rip was snapped up under these two kids, and they're getting sucked out. Mike saw it before it's happening, and he's running full speed toward the ocean. I scanned the water. All I saw was two small. noses bobbing (上下浮动)in the water.

I dropped my binos(望远镜)and I called in and said," "Double rescue 17-he's out. I'm going. " Mike was already punching through the surf line. By now, the mother of the two kids realized what's happening. She's on her feet and screaming.
