66-year-old Dai once worked as a boat tracker along the Yangtze River.

“It was something that required brute strength, but not that alone, ”Dai said at his home in Xialong village, which sits at the entrance to Wuxia Gorge, one of the famous Three Gorges in Southwest China. “You needed a lot of skills to do what we did.”

When outboard motors became available in the 1980's,boat trackers became a thing of the past. Today, they are seen only occasionally along the river during festivals and cultural events.

However, Dai can still remember a time when being pulled by tracker along the Yangtze was the only way for people to travel from village to village in the mountainous Wushan county. Due to the area's rich mining resources, his services were vital for companies that wanted to ship their goods.

“I was 15 or 16 when I started”, said the retiree, explaining that his father also worked as a tracker. “He died in 1964, when I was a teenager. I can't even remember us tracking together, but we did. It was so long ago.”

Dai said that boats crews worked in teams with a first, second and third master. The first master was the most essential because he sat in the boat and steered (操纵) it along the safest route.

“It was a key role. He had to guide the boat past jagged rocks and whirlpools,” he said, adding that first masters were often the most experienced boatmen and the most familiar with the Yangtzer River.

“My tracker days were dangerous,”Dai said. “If the boat got caught in a whirlpool, it could have swallowed the boat and all the trackers down with it. The same thing would have happened if the halter (缰绳) broke.”

Dai's days as a tracker finally came to an end when his family invested in a motorboat in the early 1980s. He successfully applied for a license from Wushan shortly after.

Our body clock,or natural body rhythm, influences our energy and alertness. Paying attention to it can help us choose the suitable time of day when we best perform specific tasks.

The reality, however, is that most of us organize their time around work demands, school deadlines, commuting or social events. Doing whatever your body feels like doing is a luxury in today's fast-paced modern society.

But that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying. Obeying our body clock has significant health benefits. Disrupting our natural body rhythm,on the other hand, has been linked to problems such as depression, obesity, or headache, says Steve Key, a biology professor.

When the body clock can synchronize (使……同步) the rhythms of its natural processes, it “gives us an advantage in daily life”, says Key.

According to him, when it comes to cognitive (认知的) work, most adults perform best in the late morning. As our body temperature starts to rise just before awakening in the morning and continues to increase until midday, our memory, alertness and concentration gradually improve.

However, he adds, our ability to concentrate typically starts to decrease soon thereafter. Most of us are more easily distracted(分心)between noon and 4 pm.

Alertness also tends to fall after eating a meal and sleepiness tends to peak around 2 pm,making that a good time for a nap.

Surprisingly, tiredness may increase our creative powers. For most adults, problems that require open-ended thinking are often best dealt with in the evening when they are tired, according to a study in the journal Thinking & Reasoning.

When choosing a time of day to exercise, paying attention to your body clock can improve results. Physical performance is usually best from about 3 to 6 pm,says Michael Smolensk, a professor of biomedical engineering.

Of course. not everyone's body clock is the same, making it eyen harder to synchronize natural rhythms with daily plans.

66. If we know our natural body rhythm well, we can .

A. find out the suitable time to do specific tasks

B. organize our time around work demands

C. do whatever our body feels like doing

D. be sure to be healthy

67. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Our alertness is influenced by our natural body rhythm.

B. Doing whatever your body feels like is very difficult in our modern society.

C. Obeying our body clock is good for our health.

D. Disrupting our natural body rhythm can lead to obesity.

68. According to Steve Key, which of the following is NOT true?

A. When our body clock synchronizes the rhythms of its natural processes,we can do better.

B. When it comes to cognitive (认知的) work, most people perform best in the late morning.

C. As body temperature rises before awakening in the morning, our concentration gradually

improves.

D. We concentrate better in the late morning than between noon and 4 pm.

69. Inspiration to solve a difficult problem will most probably come to us .

A. when we get up in the morning C. when we are full of energy in the late morning

Nowadays, there is an increasing number of people offending traffic rules. They don’t observe traffic regulations, which worries their parents and teachers much. For instance, we may see some students riding bikes on the motorway. While showing their bravery, they are exposed to being hit terribly. Also, some students play football along the street, their heart flying. What’s worse, some go in the opposite direction and even go straight through the crossing regardless of the traffic signals. How dangerous!

It goes without saying that obeying traffic rules is absolutely essential for our safety. Besides, we are supposed to know the common sense to protect ourselves when coming across emergency. Moreover, we should promote security awareness. So, to value your life, we can never be careful enough on the way.

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. 石家庄二中实验学校2018级英语周考试卷 命题人张建伟做题人殷晓优考试时间8 月23 日 I 阅读理解(共4 小题;每小题2 分,满分8分) Recently, researchers at the University of Toronto figured out a way with a quick video selfie to accurately measure blood pressure with your smartphone’s camera by developing a technology known as transdermal optical imaging (TOI)(透皮光学成像). Cameras on smartphones can catch red light reflected from hemoglobin (血红素)under our skin, which permits TOI to visualize and measure blood flow changes. Researchers measured the blood pressure of 1,328 Canadian and Chinese adults by getting two-minute vide os of their faces on an iPhone. “From the video got by the technology, you can see how the blood flows in different parts of the face and through this flow, you can get a lot of information,” said Kang Lee, lead author of the study. Lee also helped create an app called Anura, which allows people to try out the TOI software for themselves, giving them the ability to record a 30-second video of their face and receive measurements for stress levels and resting heart rate. Lee said more research was needed to make sure that the measurements were as accurate as possible, explaining that the study didn’t test people with very dark or very fair skin. “In order to improve our app to make it usable, particularly for people with hypertension (高血压),we need to collect a lot of data from them, which is very hard because a lot of them are already taking medicine,”Lee explained. “We cannot tell them not to take medicine, but from time to time, we get participants who don’t take medicine so we can get hypertensive people this way.” The scientists said there were many potential applications of the technology, including providing health services for those who lived in remote areas. 1. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2? A. Information offered by TOI. B. New findings on hypertension. C. How TOI is put into smart phones. D. How the TOI technology works. 2.
