AChristmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies. The Grinch(2000)This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but in the end discovers the power of love and generosity.I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.Love Actually(2003)While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.Home Alone(1990)This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While other family members are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch an 8-year-old boy beat two grown men.Miracle on 34th Street(1994)You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer anda little girl. The story line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age1.Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?A. The Grinch.B. Home AloneC. Love Actually.D. Miracle on 34th Street. 【答案】.A【解析】细节理解题。

The silver-backed chevrotain — also known as the Vietnamese mouse deer — is about the size of a large rabbit. They are shy, enjoy being alone, appear to walk on the hips of their hooves (蹄) and have two sharp teeth. Chevrotains typically weigh less than 5 kilograms. Its last recorded sighting was in 1990, when a team of Vietnamese and Russian researchers obtained a dead chevrotain from a hunter. “Then nothing. So little known about it that the species was one big question mark. For so long, it has seemingly only existed as part of our imagination,” said Vietnamese biologist Any Nguyen. One of the biggest challenges was deciding where to start the search. After several interviews with local villagers who reported seeing a grey mouse deer, a field team set three camera traps for five months. “We had these two areas separated by quite some distance — one in the southern part of Vietnam and the other much further north,” said Andrew Tilker, Asian Species Officer at the Global Wildlife Conservation. This resulted in 275 photographs of the species. The team then set up another 29 cameras in the same area, this time recording 1,881 photographs of the animal.Tilker also warned that just because this species was found relatively easily, it doesn’t mean it’s not under threat. “This might represent the last population or one of a handful populations, in which case we need to take action immediately to put conservation measures in place to ensure its survival.”The team is now setting out to determine how large and stable this population of chevrotains is, assess the wider distribution of the species, and explore the threats to its survival. As part of the first-ever comprehensive survey on the species, the team began camera trap surveys in October in two additional areas. They will use all of the information that they gather to set up a project that strengthens the conservation of the species across its range.4.What can be learned about chevrotains?A.They usually live in small groups.B.They are a rare rabbit-sized species.C.They weigh as much as an adult deer.D.They’ve lived in Vietnam for 30 years.5.What did Any Nguyen’s words suggest?A.Chevrotains became a mystery.B.Chevrotains didn’t exist at all.C.It was fun to hunt for chevrotains.D.It was too late to protect chevrotains.6.How did the field team conduct their research?A.By interviewing some hunters.B.By analyzing previous studies.C.By taking pictures of chevrotains.D.By employing villagers as guides.7.What is the last paragraph mainly about?A.The threats to chevrotains.B.The team’s main challenges.C.The team’s new discoveries.D.The protection of chevrotains.CAt 81 years old, Jeanne Daprano is still pushing her body to the limit. She’s still running competitive races, breaking world records and taking on new challenges. “The thing I’m learning about aging is that it’s inevitable,” Daprano said. “I’m not going to escape it. There are two ways to go: You can either press on or give up.”Daprano grew up in Iowa. Then, she moved to California. As a primary school teacher, she began running in order to keep up with her student. “I was known as a running teacher,” she said. “I had my students do fitness before we studied in the morning and then throughout the day.” Then she began running competitively with 5K and 10K road races before moving to the track. She is now the world record holder in the women’s 75-year-old age group 400 meters and 800 meters. “When I get to the final finish line, I want this body to be worn out. I’m not doing this to live to be 100. I’m doing this to be the best I can be today.”After moving to Atlanta about a decade ago, Daprano met fitness trainer David Buer. Ever since, she’s been coming to his gym, where he tailors workouts for Daprano’s specifc needs. “When she came to me, she was pushing 70 years old,” Buer said. “I’ve worked with other individuals Jeanne’s age, but she came to me with different goals. She had a unique drive and passion — not just a passion for fitness or athletics but for life in general.”Last February, Daprano took on a new challenge: her first indoor rowing competition. In classic fashion, she broke the world record in the 80-to-84 age group, rowing 2,000 meters in 9:23:7. For those hoping to either start getting in shape or stay in shape for a long time, she offers this advice: Listen to your body. What are you passionate about? However, not Gitanjali Rao. The 15-year-old sophomore at STEM School Highlands Ranch has been coming up with innovative solutions lo worldwide problems since she was ten. It is, therefore, not surprising that the youngster was selected from 5,000 equally impressive nominees—aged 8 to 16—for TIME Magazine’s first-ever “Kid of the Year.”The young girl, who knew she wanted to bring change and positivity to her community since 3rd grade, was just ten years old when she heard about the lead-tainted (含铅的) water in Flint, Michigan, in 2015. After spending two months researching how the area’s drinking water became polluted, Rao began designing a device called Tethys, which attaches to a cellphone and informs the resident via an APP if their drinking water contains traces of the harmful metal. The prototype (模型) earned her the Young Scientist Challenge Award in 2017.A start-up entrepreneur is working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys’ potential and hopes the device will be ready for commercial use by 2022.In 2019, Rao took on another social issue—opioid addiction. The app she designed won the Pillar Prize at the Innovation Student Challenge, which helps to catch drug addiction in young adults before it’s too late. Rao said. “I wanted to come up with a way to diagnose such addiction at an early stage so you can take action earlier.”More recently, the teenager has created another inspiring app. “I stared to hard-code (编写硬编码) in some words that could be considered bullying, and then the computer search engine took those words and identified words that are similar. You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is.” Rao told editor Angelina in an interview. “The goal is not to punish. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.”12.How is Gitanjali Rao different from most teenagers?A.She is trying to find her passion and purpose in life.B.She is a sophomore at STEM School Highlands Ranch.C.She has put forward creative answers to worldwide problems.D.She applied to be “Kid of the Year” of TIME Magazine.13.What can we learn about Tethys from Paragraph 2?A.It is a device for residents to research the drinking water.B.The traces of the harmful metal will be presented on it.C.Its phone APP tells users whether the water is polluted.D.A start-up entrepreneur has put Tethys on the market.14.What does the underlined expression “opioid addiction” in Paragraph 3 refer to? The tiny, delicate skeletons are usually scattered by scavengers(⾷腐动物) weathering before they can be fossilized. Ichthyosaurs(鱼龙) had a higher chance of being preserved than did terrestrial creatures because, as marine animals, they tended to live in environments less subject to erosion. Still, their fossilization required a suite of factors: a slow rate of decay of soft tissues, little scavenging by other animals, alack of swift currents and waves to jumble and carry away small bones, and fairlyrapid burial. Given these factors, some areas have become a treasury of well-preserved ichthyosaur fossils. The deposits at Holzmaden, Germany, present an interesting case for analysis. The ichthyosaur remains are found in black, bituminous marine shales(页岩) deposited about 190 million years ago. Over the years, thousands of specimens of marine reptiles, fish and invertebrates have been recovered from these rocks. The quality of preservation is outstanding, but what is even more impressive is the number of ichthyosaur fossils containing preserved embryos.Ichthyosaur with embryos have been reported from 6 different levers of the shale in a small area around Holzmaden, suggesting that a specific site was used by large numbers of ichthyosaurs repeatedly over time. The embryos are quite advanced in their physical development; their paddles, for example, are already well formed. One specimen is even preserved in the birth canal. In additional, the shale contains the remains of many newborns that are between 20 and 30 inches long. Why are these so many pregnant females and young at Holzmaden when they are so rare elsewhere? The quality of preservation is almost unmatched and quarry operations have been carried out carefully with an awareness of the value of the fossils. But these factors do not account for the inter-esting question of how how there came to be such a concentration of pregnant ichthyosaurs in a particular place very close to their time of giving birth.11.All of the following are mentioned as factors that encourage fossilization except the_____( D )A. speed of buryingB.conditions of the waterC.rate at which soft tissues decayD.cause of death of the animal12.which of the following is true of the fossil deposits discussedin the passage?( B )A.They include examples of newly discovered specie.B.They contain large numbers of well-perserved specimensC.They are older than fossils found in other places.D.They have been analyzed more carefully than other fossils.13.The word“outstanding"in Paragraph2is closest in meaning to_____( D )A.“extensive"B.“surprisingC."vertical"D.“excellent"14.Why does the author mention the specimen preserved in the birth canal?( A )A.To illustrate that the embryo fossils are quite advanced in their development.B.To explain why the fossils are well preserved.C.To indicate how the ichthyosaurs died.D.To prove that ichthyosaurs are marine animals.15.Which of the following best expresses the relationship between the firstand second paragraphs?( C )A.The first paragraph describes a place while the second paragraph describes a field of study.B.The first paragraph defines the terms that are used in the second paragraph.C.The second paragraph describes a specific instance of the general topic discussed in the first paragraph.D.The second paragraph presents information that contrasts with the information given in the first paragraph.第三部分:概括段落⼤意和补全句⼦(第16 -25题,每题1分,共10分)阅读下⾯短⽂,请完成短⽂后的2项测试任务:(1)从第16-20题后所给的6个选项中为第①~⑤段每段选择1个正确的⼩标题;(2)从第21~25题后所给的6个选项中选择5个正确选项,分别完成每个句⼦。

Whenthe world was still populated by hunter-gatherers, small, tightly knit(联系)groups developed their own patterns of speech independent of eachother. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just fiveto ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and theirlanguages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialisation, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalisation and better communications in the past few decades, allhave caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish andChinese are increasingly taking over.At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages ishugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages;the Americas about 1,000;Africa 2,400;and Asia and the Pacific perhaps3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken byfewer people than that.Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left.Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon(eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150), Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu inAustralia(one, with a question-mark):none of these seems to have much chance of survival.28.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times?A.They developed very fast.B.They were large in number.C.They had similar patterns.D.They were closely connected.29.Which of the following best explains“ dominant” underlined in paragraph 2?plex.B.Advanced.C.Powerful.D.Modern.30.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present?A.About 6,800.B.About 3,400.C.About 2,400.D.About 1,200.31.What is the main idea of the text?A.New languages will be created.B.People ’s lifestyle s are reflected in languages.C.Human development results in fewer languages.D.Geography determines language evolution.D(2018 课标全国Ⅰ ,D)We may think we ’re a culture that gets rid of our worn technology at the first sight ofsomething shiny and new, but a new study shows that we keep using our old devices(装置 ) well after they go out of style. That’s bad news for the environment—and our wallets— as these outdated devices consume much more energy than the newer ones that do the same things. To figure out how much power these devices are using, Callie Babbitt and her colleaguesat the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York tracked the environmental costs for eachproduct throughout its life— from when its minerals are mined to when we stop using the device. This method provided a readout for how home energy use has evolved since the early1990s.Devices were grouped by generation. Desktop computers, basic mobile phones, and box-set TVs defined1992. Digital cameras arrived on the scene in 1997. And MP3 players, smartphones, and LCD TVsentered homes in 2002, before tablets and e-readers showed up in 2007.As we accumulated more devices, however, we didn ’t throw out our old ones. “The living-room television is replaced and gets planted in the kids’ room, and s uddenly one day, you havea TV in every room of the house, ”said one researcher. The average number of electronic devices rose from four per household in1992 to13 in 2007. We’re not just keeping these old devices — we continue to use them. According to the analysis of Babbitt’s team, old desktop monitors andbox TVs with cathode ray tubes are the worst devices with their energy consumption andcontribution to greenhouse gas emissions(排放 ) more than doubling during the 1992 to 2007window.So what’s the soluti on( 解决方案 )?The team’s data only went up to 2007, but the researchers also explored what would happen if consumers replaced old products with new electronics thatserve more than one function, such as a tablet for word processing and TV viewing. They foundthat more on-demand entertainment viewing on tablets instead of TVs and desktop computers could cut energy consumption by 44%.32.What does the author think of new devices?A.They are environment-friendly.B.They are no better than the old.C.They cost more to use at home.D.They go out of style quickly.33.Why did Babbitt’s team conduct the research?A.To reduce the cost of minerals.B.To test the life cycle of a product.C.To update consumers on new technology.D.To find out electricity consumption of the devices.34.Which of the following uses the least energy?A.The box-set TV.B.The tablet.C.The LCD TV.D.The desktop computer.35.What does the text suggest people do about old electronic devices?A.Stop using them.B.Take them apart.C.Upgrade them.D.Recycle them.第二节 ( 共 5 小题 ; 每小题 2 分 , 满分 10 分 )(2017 课标全国Ⅲ )根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Youth Exchange 2 C. Youth Exchange 3 D. Youth Exchange 4 23.Which nationality are Youth Exchanges most popular with? A. Spain B. Italy C. Ireland D. France B I live in Minnesota, which is unfairly famous for terrible winters. Buffalo is far more wintry, whereas Seattle’s winters are more bitter. Our winters tend to be brilliantly sunny and cheerful. But, of course, it’s different for a visitor. Lightweight thermal (保暖的) wear is good. Back in the day, we wore layers and layers of heavy woolens. A boy of 13 carrying 35 pounds of wet wool on his back does not feel very cold. Today you can buy outfits filled with goose feathers as well as thermal boots and caps to keep you warm. When I was a youth, there was no such phrase as global warming. We never got warm, not even at night, when we slept under piles of blankets because Dad believed that if you couldn’t see your breath when you talked, then the thermostat was turned up too high and you were wasting fuel. So 45 degrees was room temperature, and we wore long woolens to bed. We arose in the cold, dark dawn, and walked forth into the snowstorm to catch the school bus. We huddled (蜷缩) by the highway, praying for the bus to come, while wolves moved around eyeballing us for signs of sleepiness. When you have survived wolves, then the winters of today are a walk in the park. Enduring winter is only a start — embracing(拥抱)winter is what you should struggle for. Winter gives a sense of purpose and saves one from a life of self-gratification(自我满足), lying down and posting photos on Facebook. You have promises to keep. A sidewalk to clear. Two inches of snow over a layer of ice — you may as well set a leg trap for the elderly as leaving the walk unswept. You have children to raise. Remove their fingers from their smart phones, and lead them outdoors so they can absorb the wisdom of winter. We are animals. Life is not mainly about self-expression. It is about finding food and clothing and shelter, about sticking with the pack and not wandering off. Everyone is just as cold as you. No complaining. 24. What are Minnesota's winters like in the author's eyes? A. They are wonderful. B. They are unbearable. C. They are colder than Buffalo’ s. D. They are comfortable for visitors. 25. When the author was young, ________. A. he kept talking to keep warm B. he suffered from winters’ nights C. his dad tried his best to warm him D. his room was always at a high temperature 26. The underlined part “the winters of today are a walk in the park” in Paragraph 4 implies that today's winters are ________. A. warm B. quiet C. short D. pleasant 27. The author suggests that people ________. A. store enough food for cold winters B. lend the neighbors a helping hand C. step outside and appreciate winters D. say goodbye to modern technology C You might not realize just how much work goes into making a newspaper. Apart from searching for a good story and the endless editing required to correct mistakes, copy editors need to make sure that everything fits perfectly. A good headline tells as much as possible in a short space. There never seems to be quite enough space to express completely what you want to say. News headlines often focus on the central and most important new information. The relevantly insignificant information might be left out in order to stress the main idea or just to be brief. News headlines are featured by the vivid language. They add something special to attract readers’ eyes. Because the headline aims to describe the main focus of the story in six or seven words, every word counts and accuracy is decisive. For instance, “stab” (刺杀) is a better verb than “kill” because it tells the reader how the criminal did his deed; similarly, “Toyota” is a better noun than “car”. But the make of a good headline is not characterized necessarily by the amount of information in it. For instance, the front-page headline on the Los Angeles Times on September 11—the day New York’s World Trade Center was attacked—simply read “TERROR STRIKES”, all in capitals(大写字母). While these two words do not
