第二部分:阅读理解

Passage One

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.

Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.

Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to culture rather than in strange elements.

Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily on human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies (二分法). This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.

11. According to the passage, one of the factors that tend to promote social change is __B___.

A) mutual interest

B) different points of view

C) more worldly people

D) advanced technology

12. Social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are

quite similar in many ways because __C_____.

A) people there are always satisfied with their living conditions

B) people there have identical needs that can be met without much disputes

C) people there have got accustomed to their conditions that they seldom

think it necessary to change

D) people there are less emotional and easy to please

13. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true A

A) Social values play an important role in social change.

B) Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspects of society.

C) Social change is more likely to occur if it comes gradually.

D) Social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.

14. The expression "greater tolerance" in Paragraph 1 refers to ___D___.

A) greater willingness to accept social change

B) quicker adoption to changing circumstances

C) more respect for different beliefs and behavior

D) greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas

15. The passage mainly discusses ___D_____.

A) two different societies

B) the necessity of social change

C) different social changes

D) certain factors that determine the ease with which social changes occur Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

For nearly a century before there was such a thing as a space program, a view of space was possible. People could see detailed views of the Moon, explore Mars, and study the geometric beauty of Saturn’s rings. All of this was made possible by a small group of artist-astronomers who made a career of illustrating how other worlds in space might look.

Lucien Rudaux, a French artist, was the first to combine his artistic talents with his knowledge of astronomy. His paintings show a mixture of skilled observations, brilliant imagination, and painstaking attention to detail. As a result, many of his works have come surprisingly close to actual conditions on distant planets. His painting of Mars included moonlike craters that were first photographed by the Mariner 4 Probe in 1965. His 1830 painting of a dust storm looks remarkably like a photograph

of a storm taken by Orbiter 2 in 1976.

The artist-astronomers, including Rudaux, stimulated interest in outer space by painting what eventually turned out to be precise portraits of the planets.

16. What is the main idea of the passage A

A) The amazing accuracy of space artists.

B) The popular success of Lucien Rudaux. .

C) The imaginations of great artists.

D) The similarities of the Moon to Mars.

B) generalizations and specifics

C) photography and illustration

D) fact and fiction

20. According to the passage, what did Mariner 4 photograph B

A) A space probe.

B) The planet Mars.

C) Craters on the Moon.

D) Lucien Rudaux’s paintings.

Passage three

In the West, it is customary to hold a party in celebration of a person’s birthday. At 18, one becomes an adult. Usually the family has a big party for the new adult and a major present--an expensive car or watch-- is given to him or her. The present varies from family to family. Any birthday past 70 is celebrated in a special way because the birthday person is getting old and may die before another birthday comes around. And 100--the centennial birthday-- is generally regarded as unusually occasion because few people reach it. The centenarian may even receive a telegram or a letter of congratulations from others.

Many friends come to the birthday party with birthday presents and say “Happy Birthday” to the birthday person. The guests watch him or her open the presents and he or she thanks them for the presents they have brought. At the party drinks and food are served. Toward the end of the dinner the lights in the room are turned off, and someone comes in from another room with a cake on which are lighted candles, one for each year.

At the sight of the cake the guests begin singing “Happy Birthday to You”, and the birthday person makes a wish before he or she blows out the candles on the cake. It is said that the wish will come true if all the candles go out in one puff. After that, the cake is cut in slices, usually by the birthday person, one piece for each guest. When the party comes to an end, the guests wish the birthday person “Happy Birthday” again and leave.

Passage Four

Ants are great athletes in proportion to their size. They can lift a weight four hundred times their own weight. Theoretically a five-pound ant could easily lift a ton.

The most skillful farmers in the insect world are the small, heavily armored parasol ants. They work at night and it is nothing for them to strip a large tree at a time, marching off with bits of leaf held over them like parasols.

Surprisingly enough, these ants do not eat the vegetation they got. Rather they use it as raw material for their remarkable underground gardens, which they tend themselves.

The shreds of the leaves are literally chewed into a rich compost which is used to strengthen the garden where a thread-like fungus is cultivated. This species of fungus is their own source of food.

Included in the extraordinary parasol ant society are tiny garden workers, and slightly bigger workers who dig the interconnecting chambers of the hive. The parasol queen ant, more than one hundred times the size of the garden workers, is waited upon hand and foot by hundreds of her citizens.

26. An ant is very strong in proportion to its weight. Ants can lift a weight___D_____.

A) 300 times their own weight B)600 times their own weight

C) five-pound more than their own weight D)400 times their own weight

A) home for the queen ant B) compost for their gardens

C) species of fungus D) kind of food

28. When did the armored parasol ants work B

A) At daytime B) At night C) In the morning D)At noon

29. What’s the usage of fungus B

A) To decorate the garden. B) The only source of the ant’s food.

C) To protect the tree. D) The place for them to live in.
