Task 1

Drake was excited because he and his family finally decided to go to Park Safari, a wild animal park a few hours’ drive from his house. Drake’s parents agreed to pay for the admission tickets as long as he would pay for the extras like rides, food, and souvenirs with money he had saved from his pocket money.

While he enjoyed many games in the park, he couldn’t help spending his savings on the things he liked. Drake bought lots of souvenirs, because he wanted things that would help him remember that cool day. He bought a T-shirt, a poster, a stuffed Cheetah, and a water bottle. He also bought a huge pile of postcards, even though his mother explained that they had taken lots of photos. After he paid for everything, he had less than $5.00 left. He had over $50.00 at the start of the day!

A few weeks later Drake had a lot of great memories of Park Safari. He liked his mom’s photos a lot more than the postcards he bought, because they were more personal. What about the souvenirs that he wanted so badly? Most were just taking up space in his room, and he wasn’t able to remember why he wanted them so much. The worst part was, he was at the mall the other day and saw a cool DVD player. It cost $40.00, but since he spent all his money on little things at Park Safari, he couldn’t afford it.

My Son

My son is now 16 years old. He is studying at a tourism school. I think this is a good start for his career. He will do business in tourism when he graduates. I don’t like him to follow in my footsteps to work in a factory. The downside of working in a factory is that you don’t have much freedom. You have to be there on time and leave the job according to a rigid schedule. So I hope that my son will go into business in future.

I think he is an active boy. If he is not working on his schoolwork, he seems to be singing all the time. Sometimes he watches TV for a while. I don’t like many of the TV programs, so I do not want him to waste his study time on TV. He agrees with me on this, so he does not watch TV very often.

I care about his study very much. I often ask him if he has any problems with his schoolwork. Sometimes I try to help him. I save nice food for him, and buy him new clothes each year. I once even asked if he wanted to buy a computer, but he said he didn’t need one at home because he could work on the school computer. I visited his school, and found his school was well-equipped. There are over fifty computers in the library.

I think we share a lot of things in common. I like to watch football games, and he likes it, too. If our football club wins a game, he will be very happy and join us in celebration. I try to teach him some knowledge of football. It’s too bad that I never have time to take him to watch a real game in the city’s stadium. I will try to do that next year. I think he will like it.

One day Mark Twain and two friends were having coffee in a café. They hoped to have some fun. They began to talk about good things in their hometowns.

One friend said that the air in the mountains of his hometown was very clear. If one spoke in the mountains, the sound of his voice came back five times louder in the echo.

The second friend said that was nothing. His hometown was much better. He said, “If you have a shout in the mountains in the morning, the echo of your voice comes back in the afternoon.”

Mark Twain laughed. Then he said, “Listen! The echoes which you have talked about are very unusual, but in a small church in my hometown, there is an echo even more unusual than those.”

“What is so strange about the echo there?” asked one of the men.
