in Chinese, ―How many do you have this time?‖ ―Eight hundred and six pieces, that’s $40.30!‖ she answered. I’d been living in my Los Angeles flat for over

four years when my parents came for a six-month visit from China. I’d

14 n oticed that the bottles and cans they’d collected on t he road

were worth 5 cents (美分) each. When their stay with us ended, I felt

free, though I was a supporter of environmental 15 in fact.

By the time my daughter began school, I was expected to raise

money for the school. I felt very stressed. How could I work out the problem? 16 , a good idea came across my mind: how about uniting (结合) the two —environmental education and raise money? I joined an organization called LACES. It had 17 1,600 students, parents and teachers. If my two elderly parents could 18 $300 in six months from recycling (回收), why couldn’t we multiply (乘以) that number by at least 800? My team organized a day for students and parents to 19 bottles and cans directly to school. We called it the Green for Green program. The first one raised only $145. But we planned more programs. With each one, the numbers started to look 20 : $145…$400 …$481. The more success we had, the more people joined our team.

Today, LACES teachers keep boxes in their classrooms for bottles and cans. Students collect recyclables and 21 them in boxes. Parents collect at their offices. LACES parents have told me that where they used to see litter, they see 22 . Since the LACES Green for Green program started in 2011, we have raised $15,500 for the school and recycled about 75,000 pounds of waste.

I believe that our effort (努力) is followed by the others in the community, and that the result is multiplied. I used to 23 my parents’ recycling project during their visit here. Now I laugh at myself for getting the benefit (益处) from their clever ideas. They may never 24 anyone beyond their family. However, their small effort has led to big change, one that inspires (激励) family, friends, children, and even strangers.

To me, the concept(概念) of home changes along with my age all the time.

In my childhood, home was a number of calls. It seems that I had more free time than today’s children. I didn’t have to show up in front of my parents right after school, instead I would go to play with my classmates who lived in the neighborhood. We played like mad until dinner was ready and our parents called “Come back! Come home for supper!” Days

passed by as I grew up in the company of those calls which are still echoing(回响) in my ears even now.

In a short while, my childhood was gone. When a thin layer of hair(胡须) began to grow around the corners of my mouth, home became a place I tried to run away from.

As I read more and more, my world opened up, larger than before me. The bed I used to sleep in became too small, and words of care from my parents began to sound meaningless. How I wished I could have a space of my own someday! Later I was joined the army and put on the green uniform. During my service days, home was the series of letters I received one after another. My most homesick moments were when I read those letters from my family.

When I got a job, I began to get “hurt”, to rise and fall in a sea of people, and to understand that you can’t share all your pains with other people, even with your best friends. So again, another wave of homesickness came over me. When I was badly hurt, I imagined myself flying home on wings. Pushing open the door, I let tears flow down my face. At that moment I felt that as large as the world was, what I needed was only the familiar smell of home and the unchanged view outside the window of my old house…

……

Although I already have much life experience behind me, I know there is still a long way ahead and my concept of home will go on developing. But already I have come to see that home is where we can find the true meaning of all the busy rush life. What makes the concept different is that sometimes it refers to a person’s home and sometimes to the home of many, many people.

The sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile

I’ve worn all day, though I will make sure it is the first

thing I put back on the next morning just in case (以防) it

is “that day.” I want her to see me at my very best.

As usual, I eat dinner, clean the house, write—the

usual daily things. And then I lay down hoping to fall

asleep quickly, so my new day will hurry up and arrive. A

new day with a completely new sun. But as I lay there

and wait for the world to turn half way around, I think

about her. And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn into a snicker(窃笑), and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter.

And then there are times I get that lump(肿块) in my throat and that tight feeling in my chest, and sometimes that I can’t stand that feeling and begins to turn into a tear, and often that tear increases greatly itself and I can no longer fight the feeling and I lose the battle. Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find myself asleep. Then the dreams begin and keep me company until my new day arrives.

When I am awake it’s with such excitement because I tell myself this could be the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest of my life. I quickly wear my smile because I really want her to see me at my very best. Then I look out the window because, even though I know it’s dawn, I still have to confirm I’ve been given another chance to find her.

And there it is…the sun, even when it’s cloudy; somehow I still see it. And it smiles at me and I say, “Thank you,” and I smile back.

Thank you for the sun, which began my new day. Thank you for feeling confident when I got up this morning that I would find her in this new day. But most of all, thank you for me not having to ever wait on another sunrise because whenever I want to see it, I will look at her and there it shall always be, in her eyes; she will forever hold it for me.

She is my sunrise, my dawn, my new day.

Staring(盯着...) at a computer monitor for hours on end has

become part of the modern workday. Middle and high school

students, as well as upper elementary students, find that most

of their homework should also be completed on the computer.

Add during the school day, our children are spending hours and

hours on the computer or tablet(平板电脑) every week.

Many parents doubts the effect that this computer time has

on their child’s eyesight. In fact, the medical community has called the effect a computer screen has on th e eyes as ―Computer Vision Syndrome(综合症)‖. Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS, is not one specific eye problem. Instead, CVS is not the eye problem, but a pain experienced by computer users.

CVS symptoms include blurred(模糊的) vision, double(重复的) vision, eye irritation(刺激感), headaches, and back or neck pain. These effects are the same experienced by a person who has watched too much TV, read a book for too long, or played one too many

video games. In fact, most of CVS symptoms can be found in Asian students who study for many hours a night. BBC News reports a ―massive rise in Asian eye damage(亚洲人视力严重下降)‖. The article goes on to say that, ―the "greatly surprising rise" in the problem is being caused by students working very hard in school and missing out on outdo or light…Up to 90% of school leavers in major Asian cities are suffering from myopia -short-sightedness – while in the UK, the average(平均) level of myopia is between 20% and 30%.‖Don’t fear! There are easy, effective ways to control or even reduce the negative effects that technology and reading have on the eyes. Making a few changes to your home/work environment, and how your child interacts(互动) with technology, can help prevent and even improve Computer Vision Syndrome. Here are some easy tips from the medical experts at WebMD:

Reduce the strong light

Change the lighting around you to reduce glare on the computer screen.

Rearrange your desk

Researchers find that the best and most ideal position for your computer monitor is slightly below eye level.

Follow the 20/20 rule

Look away from the screen every 20 minutes or so and either look out of the window or scan the room for about 20 seconds to rest your eyes.

Keep some distance

The human eye has to work much harder at close distances.

Go outside

The final step to keeping ourselves and our children healthy is an easy one- go outside and play!

Technology is the future. Gone are the days of file cabinets and books, pencils and erasers. As adults, it is our job to care for the only pair of eyes we have. As parents, it is our job to be sure our children know how to use technology safely, as technology- and their eyes- will be a part of their lives forever.
