Halloween is celebrated every year. The word Halloween actually has its
origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from change of All hallows Eve. All
Hallows Day on November 1st is a Catholic day of celebration in honor of saints.
In Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. it was believed that,
on that day, the spirits of all those who had died throughout the year would come
back in search of living bodies to posses for the next year. It was believed to be
their only hope for the after life. Naturally, the still living did not want to be
possessed. So on the night of October31, “ All Hallows Eve”. Villagers would put
out the fires in their homes, to make them cold and unwanted. They would then
dress up in strange costumes and noisily parade around the neighborhood. They
would be as wild as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to
possess.
The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840’s by Irish
immigrants fleeing the potato famine. At tat time, the favorite games included
tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates. The custom of
“trick-or-treating’ (when children go from house to house collecting candy) is
thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth century
European custom called souling. On October 31, all Souls Day, early Christians
would walk from village to village begging for soul cakes, made out of square
pieces of sweet bread. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more
prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead who remained in limbo
