四、阅读理解

A

Nearly 30 years after first opening its door, the Blue Window Bistro is now owned and managed by Melissa Paternoster, who bought the restaurant in her senior year at the University of New Mexico one year ago.

It’s not often that young people return to Los Alamos after college to run a business, but that’s just what Melissa has done. Owning a restaurant was something that Melissa had always dreamed about, but the idea seemed rather unrealistic at such a young age, so she decided to take the traditional route and go to college.

Melissa graduated from Los Alamos High School and attended the University of New Mexico where she studied business and then focused on pursuing an Environmental Science degree. In her last semester, she heard that the restaurant was for sale and by June of 2010 she took ownership.

“I was born and raised in Los Alamos, and have always loved it,” she says. “In the past few years, I’ve worked in various restaurants in both Los Alamos and Albuquerque while attending the University of New Mexico. I started waiting tables at the Blue Window Bistro While attending college. I always thought it was just such a neat little place.”

In her first year, Melissa started several new events, including wine-tasting and jazz nights. A website about the restaurant was created, new staff training and service standards have been launched, and a Sunday brunch service and off-site catering (承办宴席) have been established. Additionally, the menu has been expanded (and changes seasonally) to include new specials and new flavor combinations in old favorites.

As for the future, Melissa has ambitions to continue to add services, and to expand partnerships with other local businesses. “I care about how I run my business,” she says. “I work to keep my spending in town and to change people’s opinion that they have to go out of town for a nice evening out.”

The parents of a troubled teen may feel unsure as to whom to turn to in order to find help for their child. They may feel as if they have exhausted all of their options, and sometimes they are on the verge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more importantly, a fresh start.

The following is a list of the most effective types of schools for troubled teens. Not every facility is a match for every child, but by knowing the differences between them, parents can make a better educated decision about where to send their teenager.

Boarding Schools

When a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where almost every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.

T reatment Centers

When a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential treatment center that specializes in young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over.

Wilderness Programs

Designed to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the child, wilderness programs send kids back to nature. By plac ing them in a foreign, and sometimes uncomfortable setting, wilderness programs hope to improve children’s behavior. Programs generally include hikes, exercise programs and team building exercises.

Boot Camps

Boot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are modeled after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not be the best choice for a teen with a drug addiction.

If you can’t beat them, eat them! That’s what government officials in Illinois have decided to do with the Asian carp (鲤鱼), a fish that’s damaging the ecosystem of the state’s waterways.

Asian carp are considered an invasive species – an animal or a plant that moves into an area and harms native animals or plants. Invasive species usually arrive at a new home by accident. They may come on cargo ships that travel around the world, for example. Some invaders are brought to an area on purpose to be sold as pets or food.

Officials have been trying to prevent Asian carp from spreading since the fish showed up in the lower Mississippi River in the 1970s. However, the fish have swum farther and farther north ever since. Asian carp are now so numerous in the Mississippi River that they are known for leaping out of the water by the dozens.

This might not seem like a big deal. But invasive species can disturb the fragile balance of an ecosystem. Officials hope to stop the fish from reaching the Great Lakes in the north.

Now Illinois hopes to solve the problem by making the fish a part of people’s diet. However, despite the fact that Asian carp are widely eaten in China, many folks in the US confuse them with native carp, which are believed to contain lots of pollutants.

Officials in Illinois have even begun promoting the fish as a solution to hunger. Several weeks ago, the state launched a “Target Hunger Now!” campaign that could put Asian carp on the menu to help feed people in need. “Asian carp are actually pretty tasty,”says Chris McCloud, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. “They taste like what I think people would consider a normal white fish.”

In 2008 and 2009 I published two articles researching the ongoing solar inactivity. At the time, there appeared to be some disagreement among scientists as to what, if any, impact this might have on human-caused global warming. Now climate scientists agree that a less active sun wont’ have much of an impact.

According to the reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global climate is expected to warm up by 4 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏度) by the year 2100. On the other hand, scientists show that the decrease in radioactive forcing due to low solar activity would reduce world temperature increases by only half a degree Fahrenheit if the solar minimum (太阳活动极小期) lasted until the end of the 21st century.

It is highly unlikely that the current diminution in solar activity would last for so long. “Current temperature data also confirm that the effect of low solar activity on the climate is very small,” commented Professor Stefan Rahmstorf, who was responsible for a study of the effect of the solar minimum on climate at the Institute for Research on the Impacts of Climate Change in Germany.

In short, this small forcing is likely to have little, if any, observable effect on human-caused global warming. The small effect on temperature is due to the fact that the difference between solar activity highs and lows changes solar output by less than 0.5 percent. So the difference in the amount of energy coming out of the sun between solar highs and lows isn’t very large. Meanwhile,

4

the estimated increase in greenhouse gasses by the end of this century creates a forcing equal to about 3 percent of solar output. The result is that the human forcing on climate is many times larger than that caused by any natural change in the sun.

71. What did scientists think of the effect of low solar activity on global warming in 2008 and 2009?

A. They agreed it would have a great effect.

B. They agreed it would have little effect.

C. They disagreed on what effect it could have.

D. They disagreed on how greatly solar activity would change.

72. On the whole, scientists expect that by 2100 global temperature will .

A. increase a bit

B. decrease a little

C. be the same as it is today

D. be influenced totally by solar activity

73. The underlined word “diminution” in the third paragraph can be replaced by “”.

A. rise

B. drop

C. move

D. heat

74. The difference between solar activity highs and lows changes solar output by .

A. about 3.5%

B. slightly more than 2.5%

C. about 3%

D. less than 0.5%

75. In which part of a newspaper are we most likely to read the passage?

A. Education.

B. Technology.

C. Science.

D. Politics.

[1]People today, in all this new world of technology and thinking, have lost sight of what a true friendship is. So, though I own my best friend Jenny, I thought I would help the world out a little and explain what real, true friends are.

[3]Friends have to argue! No one likes to but it is necessary to be healthy. Because if you agree on everything, either the government has expanded cloning subjects or someone isn’t being true and is trying a little too hard.

[4]Y ou have to be comfortable together. Otherwise, you just aren’t goin g to click. If you feel uneasy around the person then something isn’t quite right.

[5]Friends love unconditionally. They have their little angry moments but what’s done is done and all is forgiven and forgotten. Why let something that happened in the past ruin the happiness you could have in the future?

Besides, it contributes to our health. At last, it won’t do any harm to the environment.

However, others don’t think so. In their opinion, riding an electric bicycle to school has a

high risk of accident because of its high speed. Moreover, it is a waste of money to buy one,

especially for those families which cannot afford it.

Personally speaking, we can choose some means of transportation suitable for us, on

condition that we keep the safety rules in mind.
