What do you do if you are hit in the mouth and one of your teeth is knocked out?

A dentist may be able to put the tooth back in for you, but you have to get to the

dentist first. In the meantime, you have to store the tooth so that it will stay

healthy.

The simplest thing to do is to put the tooth back into your mouth, or you could

put it in milk. Frank Courts, a dentist at the University of Florida, worked with

other researchers to find the safest way of keeping knocked-out teeth. He tried

putting teeth into milk, into water, and into cell-culture medium (细胞培养液). He

also tried just drying the teeth in the open air. He used teeth that had to be removed

from people's mouths for various reasons. The teeth were put into one of the solutions

(溶液) or stored in the air for one hour. Then cells from the root of the teeth were

scraped off the teeth. Dr Courts and the others then studied how healthy these cells

were.

The cell-culture medium worked best to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside

the mouth. However, few people keep cell-culture medium handy at home or in school.

The next best thing was milk. But Dr Courts said that the best thing of all was to

wash the tooth and put it right back into its socket (牙槽) in the mouth. For some

people, though, this is just too painful or upsetting. So milk will do, until you get your tooth (and your mouth) to a dentist.

The high noise of modern life may affect speech and language development in the very young, according to a study that found the auditory parts of the brains of young mice are slower to organize properly in the presence of continuous sounds.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, kept a group of rats in an environment of continuous background noise and found that their brain circuits that receive sound did not develop at the same speed as animals that were raised in a quieter environment.

Edward F. Chang and Michael Merzenich made the study together and said the continuous noise delayed the organization of auditory neurons (听觉神经)during a critical(决定性的)two-to-three-week period after the rats were born.

For rats in the quieter environment, the auditory cortex neurons during this period gathered into a smaller area and began developing a selective response (选择性的反应)to sounds.

But for the rats in the noisy environment, this organization was slowed, causing a delay in the development of the ability to notice the difference between sounds. The researchers said it took three or four times longer for the rats raised in a noisy environment to reach the basic marks of auditory development seen in the rats in the quieter environment.

Although the rat is not a perfect model for what happens in humans, the

researchers note, the study does suggest that high levels of noise might possibly have a bad effect on babies' language learning.

"These findings suggest that environmental noise, which is commonly present in modern life when we bring up babies, can lead to auditory and language-related development delays," the researchers write in Science.

The researchers noted that although the brain development was delayed in rats in the noisy environment, their brains did eventually reach full natural growth and development.

-必修 5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans.
