Mother Teresa was one of the most highly respected women in the world. She was known around the world for her charitable works. She helped the poor, the sick and the dying throughout her life. For all her good works with the poor around the world, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, one of the highest awards anyone can win.
Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Macedonia in Eastern Europe. She was 18 years old when she decided to become a nun (修女) , a woman who devoted her life to church work. A year later, she moved to India where she became a teacher and later on started helping the poor who lived in nearby poor areas.
In 1948, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. This organization
built new schools and orphanages for poor children. They also built special health centers for the blind, the disabled and lepers, people who had leprosy (麻风病) , a horrible disease at that time. Most people are afraid of lepers because they thought they might become infected with leprosy if they touch the lepers. But Mother Teresa was not afraid of them. She cared with them, providing them with clothing, housing, medicine and food.
Mother Teresa travelled all over the world, helping the poor and the sick in Europe and in the United Sates. She worked very hard until 1989 when she retired after suffering from a heart attack. But the people who worked with Mother Teresa missed her so much; they asked her to come back as soon as she was feeling stronger. In 1997, Mother Teresa did go back, but she suffered a second heart attack and died. At the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity had become so big that it had schools and health centers in 90 different countries around the world. Today, over 4000 nuns work for the Missionaries of Charity. Sister Nirmala, now heads the organization.

Many amusics are happy when their condition is finally diagnosed (诊断). For years, Margaret felt embarrassed about her problem with music. Now she knows that she is not alone. There is a name for her condition.
