When Emily Beardmore first heard that a trip was being planned by the biology class at Windsor High School, she thought about how much fun it would be.

“I thought it would be a really good experience to go with other friends and teachers to another country in an environment other than a vacation environment,‖ the 17 year old girl said.

A few months later, Emily got her chance when she and 14 of her classmates, along with biology teacher Tamara Pennington went to Costa Rica for eight days in late May.

“It was not just a tour,‖ said Pennington, who organized the trip. ―You can go any place in the world on just a tour. Emotional quotient (EQ) is one of the ways to measure a person’s ability to be successful in life. The phrase was first developed in the 1980s and asserts that emotional quotient or emotional intelligence is as valuable as intellectual quotient (IQ).

According to theories of brain function, a high emotional quotient means someone is self-confident, self-aware, and able to navigate through trying emotional times. EQ is often tied directly to the degree of success one may have in the workplace and in personal relationships. Some companies offer services to test the emotional quotient of employees.

Intelligence quotient measuring has existed for much longer than EQ measuring. Alfred Binet developed the first modern IQ test in the early 20th century. Currently an IQ test involves a set of standardized questions. While the IQ can help us with thinking, many feel it is not enough in

measuring creative abilities or emotional abilities. In fact, some with high IQ do not seem to be good at maintaining(维持) relationships.

For example IQ measurements on most children with autism(孤独症) are typically very high, yet it is well known that these children have trouble in communicating with others.

Now intelligence quotient testing is now not administered very frequently, since some feel it merely measures how well people do on IQ tests. Emotional quotient testing is becoming more popular in the workplace since some employers feel it will help predict how well potential employees might do in stressful circumstances.

Some educators and psychologists feel that neither EQ nor IQ testing presents the full picture of a human being. There are other types of intelligence, according to critics, that may be just as important. As well, standardized testing may oversimplify emotional intelligence and response. 64.Some companies offer to test EQ for their employees because .

A.EQ is closely related to success in career

C.such services can improve the employees’ EQ

D.EQ measurement is becoming more and more popular

D.EQ measurement proves to be more accurate than IQ measurement

67.The underlined word ―merely‖ in the 5th paragraph probably means .

Many scholarships require that you write an essay in order to be considered for the prize money. Here are some tips for writing scholarship essays:

You should always outline your essays. An outline helps you create a picture of the ―whole‖ that the essay will become. Judges can’t stand when your writing is loose, lacks coherence(连贯性) or when you fail to connect your main points. They want to see that you can support your argument well with clear and concise(简明的)examples and that these examples do, in fact, relate to the topic at hand.

If you have a choice in the topic you get to write about, always try to select something you are personally interested in. Don’t write what you think the judges want to hear. This will only amount in an essay that reads like everyone else’s, which is not a great way to make yourself stand out.

If you are bored with a topic, then your essay will be boring as well. Make sure your ideas follow a clear and logical path, meaning they are connected well and the transitions(过渡)easily flow from one idea to the next. Likewise, try to stay away from the obvious or the sob story. Yes, college will be a life-changing experience, but can you think of an interesting reason why this is so? And yes, it is terrible that you lost a family member at a young age, but what does it have to do

with winning this scholarship? Judges can smell sob stories from a mile away, so only tug at the heartstrings if you have a proper reason for doing so.

68.An outline is necessary because .

A.it helps you focus on your writing

B.it helps your thoughts to spark

C.it helps you create a picture of the ―whole‖ essay

D.it helps you brainstorm on the subject

69.When choosing what to write about, you’d better .

A.choose a subject you are personally interested in

B.know what the judges are interested in

C.select something that is popular among students

D.cater to the judges as much as you can

70.When writing the essay, .

A.include the obvious or the sob story

B.keep your mind in a clear and logical path

C.try to put an interesting story in it

D.say as much as you can about your family

71.The underlined phrase ―tug at the heartstrings‖ in the last paragraph probably means ―‖.

A.make someone feel sad and sympathy

B.make someone feel strong love and sympathy

C.make someone feel excited and astonished

D.make someone feel disappointed and amazed

Commodities(日用品)are basic materials that are used and traded worldwide. The price of commodities helps determine how much a business can charge for a product and the profit it can make. Commodity prices have reached a two-year high since falling sharply during the world financial crisis.

Hard commodities are materials like iron ore, oil and gold. Agricultural products are soft commodities. These include wheat, cotton and rice.

Economic measures show the world economy is recovering unevenly. China and India, for example, have reported strong growth in manufacturing. Developed nations have had slower growth. John James, a business professor at Pace University, says demand in developing economies can push up prices for commodities like oil and iron ore used for making steel. But, he says, changing currency values can also influence prices.

Gold prices have reached record levels in recent months. That means gold dealers must pay more for the commodity now than they did only a year ago. That affects current prices.

Not surprisingly, manufacturers want some control over the prices they pay for commodities.

Futures(期货)contracts are agreements between a buyer and a seller to exchange something at a set price at some time in the future. These contracts let buyers lock in a price for basic materials.

But some traders in futures markets only want to make a profit. They buy or sell contracts depending on the direction they believe prices will go. These speculators(投机者)get condemned when prices rise, or fall, too quickly. The United States, Germany and France are looking into ways to limit this kind of trading.

Some experts say exporting commodities is not a good path to long-term economic growth. The United Nations recently reported that the least developed countries must change their economies to provide good incomes for their citizens. A UN official says the least developed countries need to cut dependence on commodities and manufacture products for export. He says only this will let them gain from world trade.

72.How many of the following are soft commodities?

①antique ②corn ③cotton ④copper

⑤education ⑥fertilizer ⑦fruits ⑧rice

⑨salt ⑩vegetables

A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.

73.What is the leading factor for this round of growth of commodity prices?

A.The growth of gold prices.

B.The speculators’ seeking higher profits.

C.Growth of demands in developed countries.

D.Growth in manufacturing in developing nations.

74.What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?

A.Measures to be taken by the United Nations

B.Solutions to this problem for developing nations

C.The disadvantages of high prices of commodities

D.How to bring down the high prices of commodities

75.Which of the following is most likely to be the biggest winner of the quick growth of commodities prices?

A.The developed nations. B.The developing nations.

C.The manufactures of commodities. D.The speculators in futures markets.

21. Carl is studying food science at college and hopes to open up meat processing factory of his own one day. A. / ;a B. / ;the C. the ; a D. the ; the 本题考查冠词,science是不可数名词,用the表示特指是不可能的,后面的factory是一个可数名词,用a 表示泛指。 22.——May I help you? You seem to be having some problems. ——, thanks. I think I can manage. A. All right B. No problem C. It’all right D. There’s no way A. 23. Interest is as to learning as the ability to understand , even more so. A. vital B. available C. specific D. Similar Be vital to 表示:对.....极端重要;something be available to somebody表示:某人可以得到某物,列句:cooperative medical service is available to all the members of the the commune. C 答案specific 不能与to 搭配;D 答案similar to 表示:与..... 本题可以把定于to understand 省掉,也可以把后面的even more so省掉或还原。 Interest is as to learning as the ability Interest is even more than the ability to understand. Interest is vital to learning Interest is as vital to learning as the ability to understand 24. I remembered the door before I left the office, but forgot to turn off the lights.
