Review of ‘Oliver Twist’

As you have read ‘Oliver Twist’, a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in Britain in 18th century which has became one of the most famous works of Charles Dickens, you can really understand the worlds‘regain the nature of goodness’.

Charles Dickens was born in a poor family ,having a poor background ,he wrote this novel in his twenties ,who was just with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals,as well as to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London.

The hero of ‘Oliver Twist’was an orphan named Oliver Twist, when he was born ,he was thrown into a world which is full of poverty and crime. He has suffered enormous pains, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings. I felt really sorry for the poor boy, but at the same time I detest the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill. To my relief, as all the happy stories do, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a

happy life at the end. One of the plots which attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs. Maylie and Rose and began a new life. He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons. He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

Sometimes,in the deep and quiet nights,I keep asking myself, how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness. I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded.

Reflect on myself,I define the nature of goodness to be one of the most necessary character for a person. Goodness is to humans what water is to fish. He who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person. On the

contrary, as the famous saying goes, ‘The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’, he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. People receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done, and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

To my disappointment, nowadays some people seem to doubt the existence of the goodness in humanity. They look down on people’s honesty and kindness, thinking it foolish of people to be warm-hearted. As a result, they show no sympathy to those who are in trouble and seldom offer to help others. On the other hand, they attach importance to money and benefit. In their opinion, money is the only real object while emotions and morality are nihility. If they cannot get profit from showing their ‘kindness’, they draw back when others are faced with trouble and even hit a man when he is down. They are one of the sorts that I really detest.

There are some worlds in an essay, ‘Goodness, of all virtues and dignities of the mind, is the greatest, being the character of the Deity, and without it, man is a busy, mischievous, wretched thing, no better than a kind of

vermin.’.

All in all,if a person without goodness ,he is destined to lose everything. Thereby, all those ‘vermin-to-be’should learn from the book and remember to regain the nature of goodness in the bottom of theirs’hearts.

This week, I read the first chapter of Oliver Twist which was named Treats of the Place Where Oliver Twist was Born and the Circumstances Attending His Birth. This part tells us the sad and serious background of this story. Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. There is no concentrate date about him, because it can be of no possible consequence to the reader. In this story, the author is not disposed to maintain that the being born in a workhouse is in itself the most fortunate and enviable circumstance that can possibly befall a human being, he does mean to say that in this particular instance, it was the best thing for Oliver Twist that could by possibility have occurred. After Oliver Twist was born, he can’t breathe well. For sometime he lay gasping on a little flock mattress, rather unequally poised between this world and the next: the balance being decidedly in favour of the latter. Luckily, after a few struggles, Oliver breathed, sneezed. Now, he is safe. Oliver’s mother tried her best to see the lively kid. A lot of people bless her. But she still left the world. Everyone didn’t know where she came. There was on ring in her hand, so she was no marry. Young Oliver Twist was enveloped in the old calico robes which had grown yellow in the same service. So he was despised by all, and pitied by none. Oliver cried lustily. If he could have known that he was an orphan, left

The Reflection of Oliver Twist Tell the truth, I could not understand this novel well . About five weeks ago ,I watched the same name film which had a deep impression on me . I was touched by the hero from this novel whose name is Oliver Twist . So then I opened the book to read again . Although there were some differences between the film and the novel, it presented the same thing . I feel that all the facts described is to make the real inner sense more thought-provoking. The themes in this novel can be divided two parts–positive and negative aspect. The first positive theme was kind .In this novel ,kind had defeated the evil .Oliver, Nacy and Rose who were all the representatives of the kind . Although they were born in a poor family and grew up in the dark and criminal world .They still kept an unsophisticated world and a kind heart. No matter how hard they were, they never gave up and corrupt. They showed us their gracious quality .In addition , Nacy treated Oliver as her young brother so that she helped and cared him in many situations even she finally killed by his bloody husband for rescuing Oliver. Brown protected Oliver from murdering because he was kind and sympathetic to him. All they were strong due to their kind hearts ,so in the end , they defeated the evil and conquered. It also told us that everyone should have dignified. I admired Oliver’s bravery . while suffering from starvation and malnutrition for a long period of time, Oliver was chosen by the other boys at the orphanage to request more gruel at dinner one night. He begged for some more soup just because he was very hungry. Nobody can do that . The trainee shamed his mother and he revolted against the trainee. Even he was weaker than the trainee when he was caught by the Fagin, he cried and begged them to send the money and books back to Brownlow. He wanted to preserve his dignify and showed his honesty. I was touched by all these behaviors.

BOOK REPORT_Oliver Twist Charles Dickens is one of the most famous novelists of the Victorian Age. When Charles Dickens was young, his father was put into prison. During this time, Dickens was living by himself and working in the underground cell of a shoe blacking factory. Maybe it is because this period of experience that makes Charles Dickens’s works are more focused on the living condition of the poor. In many of his novels, Dickens showed his sympathy for the poor. Just like this book-Oliver Twist in which Charles Dickens described the miserable life of the poor children and exposed the seedy side of the society at that time. Oliver Twist is one of Charles Dickens' most popular stories. Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse in 1930s. Later, he was sent to a Coffin shop as an apprentice. As he couldn’t endure the oppression from his boss, he fled to London. However, on the way to London, he was cheated into the haunt of thieves and trained to be a thief. On one occasion, he was taken in by a rich man—Mr. Brownlow. But unfortunately, he was framed and entrapped into the haunt of thieves again. But Oliver still believes that there are hopes in his life. Finally, Nancy, a kind-hearted woman pickpocket, rescued Oliver from dangers despite the threat of the thief-in-chief and told Brownlow that actually Oliver is his good friend’s son. Nancy was killed at the end of the story, but the police surround the haunt of thieves immediately and Oliver reunited with his family members. Of the characters in this story, Oliver, Nancy and Miss Ross represent the goodness that they are born in suffering, grow in dark world, but still keep a heart of

《雾都孤儿英文读后感》 雾都孤儿英文读后感(一): Learn to love and care Here I am sitting on a couch alone, thinking about what I have just finished reading with tears of sadness filling my eyes and fire of indignation filling my heart, which revived my exhausted soul that has already been covered by the cruelty and the selfishness of the secular world for a long time。 It is truly what I felt after reading Oliver Twist, written by the prominent British author Charles Dickens。 The resonance between me and the book makes me feel not only the kindness and the wickedness of all the characters in the novel, but what this aloof society lacks, and what I lack deep inside。 These supreme resources Im talking about right now are somewhat different from minerals, oil that we usually mention。 Theyre abstract like feelings, and some kinds of spiritual stimulation that all of us desire anxiously from one another love and care。 Those charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really what we need in life。 They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rain from the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply。 Mr。 Brownlow is one such person。 The other day he had one of his elaborate watches stolen by two skilled teenage thieves, Artful Dodger and Charley Bates, and thought naturally it was Oliver, who was an orphan and forced to live with a gang of thieves, that had done it because he was the only one near by after the theft had taken place。 Being wrathful, he caught Oliver, and sent him to the police station where the ill-tempered, unfair magistrates worked。 Fortunately for him, Oliver was proved innocent by one onlooker afterwards。 With sympathy, Mr。 Brownlow took the injured, poor Oliver to his own home。 There Oliver lived freely and gleefully for some months as if he were Mr。 Brownlows own son。 One day, however, Mr。 Brownlow asked Oliver to return some books to the bookseller and to send some money for the new books that he had already collected。 The thief Oliver once stayed with kidnapped him。 After that he disappeared in Mr。 Brownlows life。 Searching for a while,Mr。 Brownlow had to believe the fact that he had run away with his money。 But dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later。 Without hesitation, Mr。 Brownlow took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil。 Perhaps most of us would feel confused about Mr。 Brownlows reaction。 But as a matter of fact, this is just the lesson we should learn from him。 Jesus said in the Bible。 Forgive not seven times, but seventy-times seven。 Why is that? Because forgiveness is our

It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine, though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. Oliver Twist is written by Charles Dickens. Charles Dickens is one of the greatest writers in the England. He was born in a poor family, but later he became famous and rich. The famous novel --A Tale of Two Cities is written by him, too. This novel shows us the cruelty and crime of London. Oliver Twist, the hero, is a poor orphan. He lived in a life filled with taunts. Nobody loved him. With visions of his future, he decided to go to London. He thought a new life was coming, but he was wrong, a group of thieves were waiting for him. The author created a group of bad men. When I read the novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles ten years ago for the first time, I was merely shocked by Tess’s miserable and tragic fate. What a lovely and kind girl! She did nothing wrong but she had to bear all these adversities that she didn’t deserve. At that time I was just a naive little girl in junior high school. Fagin, an old man, with a horribly ugly face and red hair, was the head of those thieves. He tried to make Oliver be a criminal. Monks, Oliver’s brother, did bad things to hurt Oliver. He wanted to get the legacies left by his father alone. He paid Fagin to trap Oliver into a
