Nearly 20,000 deaths due to lung cancer occurred in Can ada in 2003. Lung cancer is the leadi ng cause of death due to cancer in Can ada, represe nti ng 30% of the cancer deaths in males and 25% of the cancer deaths in females.

Smok ing is the si ngle most importa nt cause of lung cancer. A comprehe nsive approach to tobacco con trol has bee n adopted all over the coun try. Measures such as

educating the public about the harmful effects of smoking have contributed to sig ni fica nt decreases in smok ing over the past several decades.

The annual results from the official departme nts show that betwee n February

and December 2007, 19% of the Can adia n populati on aged 15 years and older were

curre nt smokers. Slightly more males tha n females were smok ing. But the differe nee betwee n the male and female smok ing rate has n arrowed from 6% in 2005 to only 2% in 2007.

14% of Can adia n households reported at least one pers on who smoked in side

the home every day or almost every day. Among the rema ining homes where some one

did not smoke every day or almost every day, 12% of homes still allowed smok ing in side.

It was also reported that 7% of children under the age of 12 were regularly exposed to

sec on d-ha nd smoke at home. There are no differe nces betwee n 2007 and 2006 in these respects.

All this shows we have a long battle to fight. World No Tobacco Day is held

every year on May 31 to en courage coun tries and gover nments to work towards strict

regulation of tobacco products. The theme of 2008, "Tobacco-Free Youth", aims to educate the gen eral public and particularly the young people about the dan gers of smok ing.
