1．The Two Roads两条路
It was Christmas Eve，an aged man was standing on the balcony ，with uneasy，alarmed and pessimistic expression；He sighed for his miserable fate, and raised his sad eyes, gazed at the sparking stars in the deep blue sky. A falling star depicted a curve in the sky and disappeared, which seemed like the symbol of his life.
Then he cast them below his floor, where a few more desperate people than him were moving towards their inevitable destination-the grave. He had already expended sixty years on the way leading to it, and he had acquired nothing but agony and regret. Now his health was poor, his mind was vacant, his heart was sorrowful, and his life was short of comforts.
The days of his youth appeared like dreams floating in his brain, and he recalled the strategic moment when he stood at the access to two roads- At the end of the first road, it was a peaceful and sunny place. It was covered with delicate flowers, fascinating bamboo forest, bunches of attractive grapes. There lived cute deer, tame lambs, and flying butterflies and echoed with the merry, sweet laughter. There were also winding tracks and honey peach trees dotted the graceful landscape.
At the end of the second road, it was a damp and dull cave, which was an absolute hell of great bulk. It was covered with moist ponds and marshes, nasty, ditches and jungles, chilling and thrilling jails, all around was emitting the stale acid flavor. There lived evil devils, giant monsters, poisonous snakes, and echoed with the horrible barking of wolves. It was full of spiders, bats, frogs, damn rats, offensive bugs and other crawling insects.
He looked up to the sky and shouted aloud,“O youth, return! Return !”
And his youth did return, for all this was only a nightmare which he had on Christmas Eve. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the damp and dull cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which led to the peaceful and sunny land.
Those youngsters, who are still wandering at the entrance of life and hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years have passed and your feet are limping in the dark cave, you will cry bitterly, but in vain; “O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”
1.两条路
圣诞节前夜，一位老人伫立在阳台上，面带不安、忧虑和悲伤的表情。他哀叹着自己悲惨的命运，抬起黯然失神的双眼凝视着深蓝色的天空中闪烁的星星。一颗陨落的星星划出一道弧线后消失了，那似乎是他生命的象征。
他将目光投向地面，几个比他更加绝望的人正在走向人生必然的终点—坟墓。在通往人生终点的道路上，他已经过了60多个年头，除了痛苦和悔恨，他一无所获。现在，他身体虚弱，精神空虚，心情忧郁，缺少晚年应有的舒适。青春的岁月如梦幻般浮现在他的脑海里，他回想起当他站在人生岔口上的关键时刻。当时，他面前有两条路—
第一条路的尽头，是一个和平、阳光普照的地方。那里有娇嫩的鲜花、迷人的竹林、一串串诱人的葡萄、可爱的小鹿、温顺的羊羔、翩飞的蝴蝶，到处回荡着愉快甜美的笑声，还有弯弯曲曲的小路和小蜜桃树点缀着那里优美的风景。
第二条路的尽头，是一个犹如地狱般潮湿阴暗的巨大山洞。那里遍布着潮湿的池塘和沼泽、肮脏的水沟和丛林、阴冷而恐怖的牢狱，四周散发着陈腐的酸味，那里有恶魔、巨兽和毒蛇，回荡着令人毛骨悚然的狼嚎声。随处可见的是蜘蛛、蝙蝠、青蛙、老鼠、令人讨厌的臭虫和其他昆虫。
他仰望天空，大声地哭喊：“哦，青春，你回来吧！回来吧！”
他的青春真的回来了，因为以上所发生的一切只是他在平安夜做的一场噩梦。他仍旧年轻，虽然的确犯过一些错误，但还未坠入深渊；他仍然可以自由地走上通往和平与光明的道路。
在人生的十字路口徘徊，不知该不该选择光明大道的年轻人啊，你们千万要记住：当你青春已逝，双足在黑暗的山洞举步维艰，跌跌撞撞之时，你才痛疾首地呼唤：“哦，回来吧，青春！哦，把我的美好年华还给我！”这将毫无意义。
2 .The House with a Golden Window 带有金色窗户的房子
In the bowels of a mountain of frontier zone, a little boy lived in a crude house, which could only accommodate five people of his household. There was not any railroad, freeway highway or even a pub (an inn) around the mountain .His ancestors and he were the exclusive inhabitants on the mountain for several centuries.
As he was 6 years old, he could see a wonderful house across the valley on a higher altitude of the other mountain, which had a golden window. He fancied that the emperor, prince and princess in fable must have been living in that kind of house. Sometimes, in order to assure himself that it was an authentic house, the innocent boy often stared at it, with exceeding thirst for living in it.
6 years later, the little boy believed that he had acquired plentiful knowledge and skills to dominate his life. Accordingly, he made a farewell to his parents, and flung himself on the road with a manual kit, which was made of the fabric that was weaved by his mother. There was a coil of nylon cord, a saw and other implements in it.
In spite of the hindrance of the muddy and slipper slope, for the impulse of his keen desire, he probed the road with a stick and proceeded towards the house consistently.
As he mounted the summit, he focused on the trail that led to the house and then on it. It seemed to appear an abnormal phenomenon-the house vanished weirdly and was replaced by a ugly house, which was comparable with his little house, and it windows were plain and rather dirty.
After opening the door, he found that the house was a discarded mill in a state of disorder. In the center of the house, the tools which could grind wheat into flour were covered with thick dust and the trace of mice, a rude donkey saddle and some stained sacks lying nearby it. In one corner, a primitive rack was full of cracks, spider was spinning web on it, and some fragments of mat were underneath it. In another corner, there was a stack of straw in mess, a rusted spade and a leaky barrel.
The little boy was extremely disappointed. When he was ready to leave, he detected a sight which amazed him –there was his little house across the valley on the lower mountain and its window was shining with golden color- as the midday daylight (sunshine) was shinning on the glass of its window…
This story gives us a hint (cue) that we shouldn’t be blind to the welfare in our real life. What we need is to adjust and convert our ritual notions (concepts), to find and enjoy the happiness that belongs to us.
2.带有金色窗户的房子
在边远地区的大山深处，有个小男孩一家五口住在一间简陋的屋子里。大山的周边没有任何铁路、高速路、公路甚至小客栈。几百年以来，他和他的祖辈是这座山上唯一的住户。
当小男孩6岁时，隔着山谷他看见另一座更高的山峰上有一个漂亮的带有金色窗户的房子！他想象着传说中的皇帝、王子和公主一定也住在那样的房子里。有时，为了使自己确信那是真正的房子，天真的小男孩经常凝望它，梦想着自己能住在里面。
6年后，小男孩觉得自己已经有足够的知识和技能来主宰自己的生活。因此，他告别了父母，背着母亲亲手纺织的帆布包匆匆上路了。背包里装着一卷尼龙绳，一把锯子和一些其他工具。
虽然泥泞光滑的山坡阻碍他的行程，但由于内心强烈的渴望，他用一个树枝探路，坚持不懈地朝着那个房子前进。
当登上山顶，他的目光从通向房子的小路移到那座房子。似乎发生了一个异常的现象—那个房子神秘地消失了，取而代之的是一个丑陋的，跟他家类似的小房子，房子的窗户很普通而且很脏。
打开房门，他才发现那是一个杂乱不堪的，被废弃的磨坊。房屋中间的磨具上覆盖着的厚厚的灰尘和老鼠的足印，旁边是一个粗糙的驴鞍和脏兮兮的麻袋片。房屋角落里，老式的搁物架满是裂纹，一只蜘蛛正在上面结网，架子下面是一些草席的碎片。房屋另一个角落是一堆乱糟糟的稻草，一把锈迹斑斑的铁锹和满是漏洞的水桶。
小男孩非常失望。正当他准备离开的时候，小男孩吃惊地发现——隔着山谷在低处的那个山峰上，他家的房子闪烁着金光——当时正午的太阳带正照耀着房子的窗玻璃……
这个故事启示我们不能对现实生活中的幸福视而不见。我们需要不断调整和转变我们一贯的观念，发现并享受属于我们的快乐。
3 .The view out of window 窗外的风景
Two men, both in serious illness, occupied the same ward of a hospital. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour a day to undergo therapy and drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window .The other man had to lie flat on his back all the time.
The two men talked for hours on end. They talked about their families, their jobs, their experiences in the military service and a whole lot of things. Every afternoon when the man in the bed next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the outdoor things he could see through the window.
The man in the other bed would live for those one-hour periods when his world would be broadened and restored to freshness by all the activities and view of the outside world. The window overlooked a park with a lovely stream and a stone bridge, the man said. Ducks and geese played in the water while kids sailed their model boats a gang of lads played volleyball on the lawn nearby the bridge .Lovers walked arm in arm amid blooms of brilliant colors. A range of grand oaks and some flourishing palms graced the spectacular landscape. As the man by the window described all these in vivid details, the man or the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the magnetic scenery, which gave him deep impression.
One fine afternoon the man by the window described a troop (procession) of soldiers striding across the square of downtown. Although the other man could not hear the band, he was charmed by the invisible scene.
Unexpectedly, a thought entered his head: why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to see anything? It seemed unfair. As the thought arose in his mind, the man felt upset and annoyed at first .But with several days passing, his inward (internal) envy turned into resentment and soon turned him sour. He turned indifferent
and isolated, almost neglected all the surroundings.Then, a wicked intention controlled his life- he should lie by that window. He almost couldn’t withstand the torture of his intention, and sighed from dawn to dusk. Finally, his health became worse and worse, but the doctors couldn’t find the cause.
Later one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, abruptly, the man by the window began to cough. He was choked by the fluid in his lungs. The other man peered his panic expression and quivering fingers in the dim room as the man by the window exerted all his strength for the button to call for help. At the critical moment, listening to his crawling (creeping)sound across the room, the other man disguised that he had been fallen asleep, never moved, never pressed down his own handy button which would have brought the nurse coming. It lasted about five minutes, and then the sound of cough and breath stopped. There was only silence-deathly silence.
The following morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the rigid lifeless body of the man by the window, with enormous grief, she called the hospital maid to take it away –no words, no fuss.
As soon as it seemed to be an appropriate opportunity, the man asked if the could be moved next to the window. The nurse was glad to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, with the acute ache, he sustained himself up on one elbow, and strained to turn to look out of the window. It was incredible that he faced a blank wall.
3.窗外的风景
两名患有重病的男人住在同一间病房。每天下午其中的一位都要在床头坐上一个小时以接受治疗并排空肺部的积液。他的病床临窗，那是病房里唯一的窗子。另一位却不得不整天卧在病床上。
两个人一聊就是数小时。他们谈各自的家庭、工作和当兵的经历，真是无所不谈。每天下午当临窗的男人从床上坐起时，他都要向自己的室友描述窗外看到的一切，以此来打发时光。
临床的男人开始为这一小时而活着，只有这一刻听着对有关窗外世界的一切活动和景色的描述，他的世界才变得开阔并恢复了生机。透过窗户可以看到一个公园，公园里面有条小溪和一座石桥。鸭子和鹅在水中嬉戏，小孩们玩着自己心爱的模型船。一群少年在草地上打排球。年轻的情侣携手漫步于姹紫嫣红的花丛中。一排伟案的橡树和几棵茂盛的棕榈树美化着这引人入胜的风景、、、、、、、当窗外的男士娓娓道出这一切时，房里另一边的男士就会闭上眼睛想象那如画的风景。一幅幅美丽的风景给他留下了深刻的印象。
一个晴朗的下午，窗外的人描述起外面一队士兵正大踏步的穿过市区的广场。虽然听不见乐队的奏乐声，但他还是被这看不见的场景吸引了。
出乎意料的是，不靠窗的病人突然产生了一个想法：为什么偏偏是他有幸观赏到窗外的一切？为什么自己没有机会得到这种机会的？这似乎不公平。起初，他为自己的这种想法感到不安和烦恼。几天后，他内心的妒忌变成了愤怒，脾气也变坏了。他变得冷漠孤僻，无视周围的一切。然后，一个邪恶的想法形成了-他应该躲在靠窗的病床上。他整天唉声叹气，难以承受这一想法的折磨。结果，病情一天天加重了。医生们对其病因不得而知。
一天晚上，他照例睁着双眼盯着天花板，他的同伴突然开始咳嗽，积液已经充满了他的肺腔。在光线暗淡的房间里，他瞥了一眼同伴惊慌的表情，他两手颤抖着，在摸索电铃的按钮，只要电铃一响，值班的护士就会立即赶来。在那关键时刻，听着病友在房间里爬行的声音，他却假装已经入睡、纹丝不动地看着，没有按下手边的按钮。大约5分钟以后，咳嗽声和呼吸声都停止了，四围死一般的寂静。
第二天早上，日间护士端水到病房，却只发现了窗边那个男人僵直的躯体，他已经在睡梦中安详地死去。她十分悲痛，打电话叫医院的护工将尸体抬走。
等到一个适当的机会，病房里的另一个男人请求搬到靠窗的床铺。护士很乐意，帮他调换了床铺，把一切安排妥当，她就走了。
伴着剧烈的疼痛，他缓慢而艰难地用单肘支撑起自己，挣扎着向窗外望去。令他难以置信的是-他发现自己面对的是一面空白的墙壁。
4. Four wives in our life 生命中的四位爱人
In former days, there was a wealthy merchant, who owned billion acres of fertile land, a considerable sum of property and multiple compounds (estates). He was the acknowledged leader at home and had four wives.
He had the greatest affection on the fourth wife, who enjoyed the beautiful brows and face- a fairy in his eyes. To amuse her, the merchant gave her a life of luxury, bought her fashionable blouses and boots, and took her out to dine on delicious food. Each of their marriage anniversary, he would celebrate.
He was also fond of his third wife very much. She was an amateur poet with great literacy and dignity. To approve of her, he gave her prevailing poetry as present, visit museums with her to see the antiques and went to the concerts to enjoy music of great musicians and pianists. He was very proud off her, introduced and showed off her to his friends. Nevertheless, he was always in great fear that she might go elsewhere with some other guys.
His second spouse, too, won his preference. As a cashier,
she was keen, capable and energetic in commercial issues. Whenever he faced critical problems, he always turned to his second wife. And she’d always attempted to help him cope with the problems such as cash collection or the conflicts with clients. Hence, to thank his second wife, he went to excursion with her for entertainment every several years.
His first wife was a very conservative and faithful partner. She was a woman of goodness and honesty. As a housewife, she had made great contributions to nourishing children, caring husband and doing housework. Accidentally, she appeared to be a little clumsy and ignorant. Although the merchant had a prejudice towards her, she maintained her patience to wait for him to come back to her .She was a woman of great breadth of mind.
After many years, the merchant fell deadly ill for abusing alcohol. He knew it couldn’t cure. He was pale and stiff. When he reflected on his lifetime, he couldn’t help yelling; “now I have 4 wives. But when I die, I’ll be solitary. How lonely I’ll be!’’
Suffering from the sting of the body, he asked the fourth wife, “I have attached to you the most affection, and bought pretty clothes to you and spent every festival with you. Now I’m dying, will you follow me?”“Pardon? I am not a self-sacrificing saint. No way!”the fourth wife, who was sipping tea idly in her fur overcoat, defied him.
The answer made the merchant feel fiercely disappointed on her conscience. Then he asked the third wife, “Do you remember our romantic experience? Now that I’m dying, will you follow me?” the third wife glimpsed against him. “No!” she denied. “I couldn’t bear tedious life in hell. I deserve a better life. Consequently it is of necessity that I marry other guys afterwards. Then she was calculating the route to other millionaire’s home.
The answer also hurt the merchant, and then he resorted to the second wife, “you’ve always facilitated me out. Now I barely beg you once more, when I die, will you follow me?”“I’m sorry!” she frowned, claiming, “I can only attend your funeral ceremony. The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant felt like being discarded. Then she was modifying the items of a business contract.
Then a voice wept: we are bond couple. I’ll go alongside with you wherever you go. The merchant awoke, stroking his first wife’s coarse palm. She was so lean. Thinking of her fatigue year after year, he was greatly touched and said miserably, I should have treasured you before! Then she was doing the laundry for him.
Virtually, we all respectively have four wives in our lives. The fourth tender wife represents our body. Despite the fact that we spend time making it look good, it’ll distract from us when we die. Our third wife is our possessions, remarkable fame, or noble status. When we die, they all go to eternal collapse. The second wife is our family, friends, colleagues or acquaintances. Regardless how close we have relied on them when we’re alive, what they can do for us is coming to the funeral at the utmost. The first wife is in fact our holy soul, which is often neglected in our pursuit of material and wealth. It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. We should cultivate it now, otherwise, we will possibly feel regret in the end.
4.生命中的四位爱人
从前，有一位富有的商人，家有良田万顷，大量财富和多处庄园。在家里，他说一不二。他有四位爱人。
他最钟爱他最小的妻子，她有着姣好的面容，在他眼里简直就是个仙女。为了讨好她，商人给她最奢华的生活，给她买时髦的衣裳，吃美味的佳肴。他们的每个结婚纪念日都要庆祝。
商人也很爱第三们妻子。她是一位业余诗人。她喜欢风雅，知书达理，端庄典雅。为了满足她的个人爱好，商人送她流行诗集，陪她参观博物馆的古董，听著名音乐爱的音乐会。他为她感到骄傲，把她介绍给朋友们，并常把好作为在朋友面前炫耀的资本。但他同时也忧心忡忡，怕她跟其他男人跑了。
当然，商人也爱第二位妻子。她是个管账的。生意上的事，她既热心又能干。每每遇到棘手的问题，他就会向她求助，而她也总能尽力帮他解决诸如筹钱，或与顾客之间的争执等事情。因此，作为答谢，商人每隔几年都会跟她出去游玩消遣。
商人的第一个妻子是一个保守的人，也是一位忠诚的伴侣。她善良诚实。作为一个家庭主妇，她照顾丈夫，养育儿女，做家务活。偶尔，她略有些笨拙和木讷。尽管商人对她有成见，她也不恼，很有耐心地等丈夫回心车转意。看来，她是一个胸怀宽广的女子。
几年以后，商人因酗酒病重，他自知无法治愈，将不久于人世。他脸色苍白，身体僵硬。当他回顾自己的一生，不禁叫道：“现在我虽然有四个妻子相伴，但死后却要孤零零一人。多寂寞啊！”
忍着剧痛，他问小老婆：“我最疼你，给你买最漂亮的衣服，每个节日都陪你过。现在我就要离开这个世界了，你愿意陪我而去吗？”“什么？我又不是圣人！绝对不可能！”此刻，她正身穿裘皮大衣，悠闲地喝着茶。
商人对小老婆的回答非常地失望。伤心的商人继而问第三个妻子：“你记得我们的浪漫经历吗？如今，我将不久于人世，你愿意陪我而去吗？”“不！”她拒绝道，“我无法忍受乏味的生活，我有权享受好的生活。因此，不久以后我会改嫁他人。”此刻，她正考虑着去其他富翁家的路线呢。
第三位妻子的回答也伤害了他，他再转向第二位妻子，问道：“你过去常常为我排忧解难。现在我想再请你帮一次忙。我死后，你愿意随我而去？”她皱了皱眉说道，“我只能参加你的葬礼仪式。”这句话犹如晴天霹雳，商人彻底觉得被抛弃了。此刻，她正在修改一个商业合同的条款。
这是时，一个声音哭泣道：“我愿意随你一同离去。无论你到哪里，我都跟着你。”商人猛然惊醒，抚摸着大老婆粗糙的手掌。她是那么消瘦，又想到她年复一年，日夜操劳，一时心痛不已。商人悲痛地说：“我以前应该好好地珍惜你啊！此刻，大老婆正在为他洗衣服。
其实，我们每个人的一生都有四位妻子相伴。最小的娇弱的妻子代表我们的躯体。即使我们花时间去装扮她，我们死后它终会弃我们而去。第三位妻子代表我们的财产、显赫的名声或尊贵的地位。一旦我们撒手西去，它终究会烟消云散。第二位妻子代表我们的家人、朋友、同事或熟人。我们活着的时候，无论多么亲近，他们最多也只能到幕前送我们最后一程。第一位妻子则是我们的圣洁的灵魂。当我们沉迷于追求物质、金钱或感官享受的时候，她常常会被遗忘在一旁。实际上，她才是唯一与我们永远相伴的。我们就应该从现在开始悉心照顾好她，而不是等到临终之际才悔恨不已。
5 What I learned in kindergarten 在幼儿园里学到的
Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Most of my wisdom was also gained in the nursery school. These are the things learned;
Don’t fight.
Don’t quarrel with my cousins.
Don’t veil my mistake.
Don’t imitate the criminal behaviors of fraud and thief in the television series.
Don’t steal coins in the closet, cartoon in the grocery bacon, toast or jam in the cupboard (cabinet).
Clean up my own garbage (trash).
Don’t talk about disappointing topics.
Share candy with my partners.
Distinguish the goodness from the vice.
Hold to traditional virtues such as honesty and integrity justice and kindness, mercy and patience.
Promote social morality.
Accept the criticism or proposal of others modestly.
Eat more carrot, cereal, salad and garlic, and control yourself to eat less dessert, fried chips, sausage, and stale diet.
Classify the clothing of each season.
5.在幼儿园里学到的
绝大部分我所学到的知识，例如如何生活，该做些什么事，怎样行事方面，早在幼儿园里就已经学到了。我大部分的人生智慧也是在幼儿园里学到的。以下这些都是我在幼儿园里学到的：

不偷壁厨里的硬币，杂货店里的漫画和食橱里的咸肉、烤面包或果酱；

保持诚实正直、公平友好、宽容忍让的传统美德；
发扬社会公德；
虚心地接受别人的建议；
多吃胡萝卜、谷物、色拉和大蒜，少吃甜食、炸薯片、香肠和不新鲜的食物等；
分开四季的衣物。
6 Those days in your life –for your beloved mother 生命中的岁月-献给敬爱的母亲
When you came into the world, she held you in her arms.
You thanked her by shaking your fists and weeping your eyes out. When you were 3years old, she made all your meals with love.
You thanked her by tossing your tray on her lap, crying for ice-cream and ham sandwich.
When you were 6 years old, she enrolled you in kindergarten; she began to teach you arithmetic and alphabet; she told you the tale of the fisherman and the little fish.
You thanked her by hiding in the dwarf bushes to play with ants, contaminating your school uniform.
When you were 12 years old, you were fascinated with chess and painting. She invited chess coach for you, bought you painting brushes and took you to galleries.
You thanked her by being careless about your studies, drawing portraits of teachers in class. When you were 15 years old, she took you to learn to play the violin and trumpet in an orchestra, and paid you for summer camp abroad,
You thanked her by going to bars to listen to jazz and pop music secretly, by being cynical to her so-called classic art and her tunnel vision.
When you were 20 years old, you began to date with your girlfriend. You learnt to play the guitar and went to gymnasium for girlfriend. She was concerned about you, telling this to you aunts in neighborhood accidentally.
You thanked her by disputing with her, “I am an adult,
You needn’t worry about me!”
When you were 25 years old, she was busy decorating the house with colorful ornaments, reckoning on the date of you wedding.
You thanked her by asserting to her holding your slim (slender) bride, “we are to be on a global tour wedding.”
When you were 30 years old, you became a competent editor of Eastern Literature, busy with revising sequences of scripts every day. She was worried, asking you to rest besides work.
You thanked her by moaning, “you can’t realize the tense competition in media circle.”
When you were 35 years old, you divorced unfortunately. She came to you, tending to your daughter and doing housework at home.
You thanked her by being drunk every night, smoking cigar one after another in the living-room.
When you were 40 years old, you gained recovery from gloomy feelings gradually and became a well-known fiction author. She gave her genuine congratulations to you.
You thanked her by trying to convince her to live with you, but she declined (refused)/
When you were 45 years old, with the oxygen mask, she was taken away by an ambulance due to an acute epidemic.
You thanked her by thinking she actually shouldn’t fall ill at the crisis of your career.
Then one day in autumn, she quietly died.
In front of her ashes, you looked through your sometime albums, and the fragments of your life came into illusion; an infant, a younger and a mature man in the end. Stevenson was born of inferior origin, living in a basement of a remote county in Scotland with his family. As a little boy, his greatest wish was an ice-cream in summer or a pair of gloves in winter. His father became disabled in an accident later .After the unemployment of his father, the family was on the border of famine. A loaf of bread could be the supper of the whole family. The madam pointed her luggage (baggage) and said, “Could you put them into the car?”
Kent stooped, heaved and put them in the car.
They proceeded to drive. Kent halted at a petroleum station where he wanted to purchase gallons of gasoline. During the interval they waited in a queue, the madam began with her narratives,“could you please send me to the charity house in suburb; I want to give them the luggage. I had been rendered help as a refugee there 50 years ago.”Kent was confused about the identity and behavior of the madam, so he asked, “Why do you do this at midnight?”The madam replied, “I retired on a pension. They prohibit (forbid) me from coming out during the day. In the case are the surplus jackets, jeans and pants of my nephews and nieces.”
After 2 hours’bump, Kent went out the entry of the charity house. They continued.
“Please wait a moment, Sit!”the madam said suddenly, fixed her eyesight on an old building. “You know the first house in the uppermost floor was the first home my husband and I leased (rented) where I dialed the up-to-date videophone the first time in my life. The landlord was a good guy.”She burst into tears, “Now they’ve all gone to the heaven.”Kent realized the madam was recalling a section (segment) of the good missing days. A penetrating feeling overwhelmed him, and he decided to cancel his plan and stay with the old madam.
As the old madam dictated, they went to a golf playground. The region, she said, was a dairy dozens of years ago. Everyday she went to the farm with sleeve covers, cushion, jar, towel and other auxiliary appliances. Her main work was to squeeze, transport and distribute milk. She also bred the cow sometimes.
Then the old madam instructed, “Please send me to the rest home in the town, sir.” Hearing this, Kent pulsed quickly. He knew the rest home was prescribed for the cancer patients who were diagnosed without any remedy.”
“Ｉwill soon die of liver cancer. I come out to say goodbye to my life. Now I will have no regrets before death . Later one night, there was a riot in the street with whistle of cars again and again. They said some Negros robbed a white junior student. Then my neighbor moved away. Nobody played with me since then.
My mother thought it was good for me in school, so that I would be the same as others. But on that day, the headmaster said he would check my grammar. It seemed I did badly, for my mother tried to reconcile with him. After a term, I was transferred to another school. I would tell you, it was an odd place. Some spat the gums on the sofa; some twisted stockings around their necks. The teachers only taught the simplicity of life, for example, when to slap hands, how to suck soda to prevent it from splashing on clothes and so on. We should submit to teachers. I yawned often. Soldiers often conflicted with each other: some said the black were racial inferior. It was nonsense for me. The deputy superior shouted at us every day and he once said, the declare action of the war meant this territory would be our colony sooner or later. I didn’t like his mode of speaking.
It was ridiculous that, one year later, we didn’t ever eliminate the enemy before we were notified to withdraw back to the U.S. though the recession of economy after going back to the U.S, I launched into my business. She had spend many idle hours relaxing on the deck, reading, eating a sandwich when she was hungry and in the evening watching the sky turn from brilliant orange to peach and finally to pale purple, eventually the light becoming dim. It was about this time that the mist would begin to rise from the cool water hiding in the dense forest that hugged(环绕,拥抱) the shoreline. Late evening dew glistened on every bush and soon the loon?s(潜鸟) call would resound across the water. She decided to take one last dip in the lake. As the cool night air touched her arms, she gave a little shiver and decided in was time to move inside. This was to be her last evening alone as Jeff, her former mate, would be returning Zac to her early in the morning. UNIT 4 A Canadian Family Story My story begins in Newfoundland where my brother and I were born during the Second World War. The island of Newfoundland, which was originally a British colony, became the newest province of Canada in 1949, the same year th at the People’s Republic of China was born. Our mother was born and raised in Newfoundland. During the War (World War II), she worked in St. John’s, the capital city, where she met a young Canadian sailor from Ontario. He was a member of the crew of a Royal Canadian Navy ship that was part of one of the convoys that escorted supply ships across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe during the war. They fell in love and subsequently, got married. The rest is history, so to speak. Our family moved to Ontario in late 1945, just after the war ended. In 1999, acting on impulse, my brother and I decided to take our mother to Newfoundland for a visit. It had been almost fifty years since we had last visited our mother’s outport (remote or very rural island village) where sh e grew up. It was also the 50th anniversary of Newfoundland’s becoming part of Canada. In 1950, I was six and my brother was five when we last visited our mother’s childhood home. At that time, Ireland’s Eye was a vibrant, quaint fishing village hugging th e rocky shore of a small, enclosed harbour. There was no electricity. There were no roads, no automobiles, and few signs of automation of any type. There were oil lamps and wood stoves in the homes and mere footpaths between the aggregate of small communit ies on the hilly island, also named Ireland’s Eye. We can still see and hear the inboard motorboats, putt putting (sound of engines) into the harbour, hauling their day’s catch of fish. The image of hardy fishermen with pitchforks hoisting and tossing the codfish up to the stilted platforms from the bowels of the boats is still quite vivid. The aroma of salted, drying codfish, lingers still. What I remember best, of almost half a century ago, was going out with my Uncle Fred in his boat to fish. That particular day, we were huddled together and lashed to other boats, just outside of the harbour. I can still hear the lively gossip between my uncle and the other fishermen, above the rippling and splashing of the waves against the hulls of the boats. I remember the boats heaving periodically, on the huge gently rolling waves. My Uncle Fred had only one arm, but amazingly, he could do everything as if he had two hands. He could even roll a cigarette and light it. These are my memories of the quaint Newfoundland glory days gone by. It was a very hard life in those out ports, but a life romantically cherished by most of those who lived it. Our mother was not feeling up to the trip at the time we were ready to leave, but insisted that my brother and I go on this odyssey. We would later provide her with pictures, a written account, and videotape of the trip. Although we toured other parts of Newfoundland, including an overnight stay on the French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquilon, just off the south coast of Newfoundland, our main objective was to visit Ireland’s Eye. This necessitated finding water transportation. We managed to arrange for a boat to take us on the half hour trip to the island. As it turned out, the married couple who ferried us over to the island was actually a couple of our distant cousins, whom we had never met. We had intended to have our cousins drop us off on the island and pick us up a few hours later. However, either because we were newly found cousins, or they were typically hospitable Newfoundlanders, or they thought that my brother and I would get lost, they wanted to stay with us. Probably all three factors influenced their decision. They were absolutely fabulous. They got caught up in what my brother and I were trying to do. They were very knowledgeable about the island and the people who had once lived there. Clutching a narrative of the island,
