Trapped on the 37th Floor

Melinda Skaar wasn’t expecting any phone calls. Skaar was working late in her office at the First Internet Bank of California. By 10:45 that night she was almost ready to go home when the phone rang.

Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting. There is a fire! Get out of there.

Skaar didn’t panic. She figured that it was just a small fire. Her office building was huge. There were 62 floors and her desk was on the 37th floor.

Skaar called out office mate Stephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got out to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke. Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out.

Then they called 911. Before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That

meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.

Minutes ticked by. Smoke began to float into the office. Soon it became hard for them to breathe.

Looking around, Skaar noticed a small workroom. It seemed to have cleaner air. So they crowded there. That helped for a while, but in time even the workroom was filled with deadly smoke.

Hopeless, they tried to break the windows, but the glass was not breakable. Everything they threw at just bounced back.

Defeated, they struggled back to the workroom. They felt weak and dizzy. Soon Skaar found Oksas had passed out.

Last week I went to a different grocery store than usual, just to check it out. The person in front of me at the checkout was using a WIC card to check out and it kept telling her that it wasn’t working. A manager came over and told her to come to a different register; maybe this one was the problem. After I checked out, I noticed she was still there, trying to get her card to work.

It was obvious that the young woman was getting anxious about the purchase so I offered to pay for her purchase. She was shocked. She thanked me and I went on my way with a smile from her.

Everyone needs a helping hand sometimes and you never know when it will be your turn. Today I found that it was indeed my turn.

I went boating north of the city. It was a very hot, sunny day so I bought a large container of sports drink, thinking it would be plenty to drink. I didn’t have a clear expectation of the drain(消耗) which the heat would have on me. Before I got back to shore, I realized that I had finished the bottle.

I still had to get back, load the boat on the car, and it would be at least a 10-minute drive to somewhere to buy more to drink. When I got back to shore and managed to dray my boat to the car and get it tied, I was very hot and thirsty. So, I swallowed my pride and asked a family picnicking nearby if they had an extra bottle of water, which they gladly gave me. That bottle of water wasn’t a big deal to them, but it meant a great deal to me.

The little things that can be done for others don’t usually seem important to the people doing them, but it can be huge to the receivers. Thank you to all the joyful givers who don’t think twice about helping others.

Fast food giant, McDonald’s said on Tuesday that they would be cutting out excess (过度的)calories in their kids’ menu choices starting in September. McDonald’s will reduce the amount of French fries in Happy Meals and will also include sliced apple “dippers” in every meal. McDonald’s say it will still include the ever-popular toys with each meal.

“We are going to introduce more food groups such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” said Cindy Goody, McDonald’s senior director of nutrition.

After getting much of the blame for childhood obesity, fast food chains, especially McDonald’s, began selling more nutritious menu items. But the restaurant was most criticized for its marketing which is often aimed at young children. Some cities, such as San Francisco, California, have banned toys from all kids’ meals that didn’t meet strict nutritional guidelines for fat, salt and sugar content (含量)because the prizes attracted more children to the fast food.

McDonald’s felt public pressure to change their offerings. It reduced French fry portions from 2.4oz to 1.1oz(盎司)in every meal. This decreases calorie content by about 20 percent, which means a new Happy Meal is less than 600 calories.

Meanwhile, Goody and her team plan to cut sodium(苏打)by 15 percent across the entire menu by 2015, with more cuts to sugar and calories by 2020. The Happy Meal changes will be in place in every place across the United States.

Dear Editor,

I’m a senior one student. I’m wr iting to tell you my opinion on whether middle school students can go to school with mobile phones. I think they can do that. Because students can stay in touch with their friends and family wherever they are. Besides, the mobile phone is a way to have fun.

However, there are some problems with using mobile phones. The ring of phones can disturb teachers and students in the classroom. Another problem is that some students can spend too much time and money on phone calls and sending messages.

In conclusion, I suggest students should not use phones in the classroom. Also, as it is expensive, the owner should take good care of it.

Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people or events. Festivals of the dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go to clean graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because they think that will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico, people celebrate the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The Western holiday Halloween also had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. It is now a children’s festival, when they can dress up and go to their neighbours’ homes to ask for sweets. If the neighbours do not give any sweets, the children might play a trick on them. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can also be held to honour famous people. The Dragon Boat Festival in China honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Y uan. In the USA, Columbus Day is in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World. India has a national festival on October 2 to honour Mohandas Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter and the agricultural work is over. In European countries, people will usually decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and will get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their farm produce, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. China and Japan have mid-autumn festivals when people admire the moon and in China enjoy moon-cakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat and may give children lucky money in red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the Lunar New Year together. Some Western countries have very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. These carnivals might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of al kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival for Christians around the world. It celebrates the return of Jesus from the dead and the coming of spring and new life. Japan’s Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country, covered with cherry tree flowers, looks as though it is covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our work for a little while.
