You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. What determines the kind of person you are? What factors make you more or less bold, intelligent, or able to read a map? All of these are influenced by the interaction of your genes and the environment in which you were 11 . The study of how genes and environment interact to influence 12 activity is known asbehavioral genetics. Behavioral genetics has made important 13 to the biological revolution, providing information about the extent to which biology influences mind, brain and behavior.Any research that suggests that 14 to perform certain behaviors are based in biology is controversial. Who wants to be told that there are limitations to what you can 15 based on something that is beyond your control, such as your genes? It is easy to accept that genes control physical characteristics such as sex, race and eye color. But can genes also determine whether people will get divorced, how 16 they are, or what career they are likely to choose? A concern of psychological scientists is the 17 to which all of these characteristics are influenced by nature and nurture(养育), by genetic makeup and the environment. Increasingly, science 18 that genes lay the groundwork for many human traits. From this perspective, people are born 19 like undeveloped photographs: The image is already captured, but the way it 20 appears can vary based on the development process. However, the basic picture is there from the beginning.Section B (1’×10=10’)Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it. Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet. The Art of FriendshipA)One evening a few years ago I found myself in an anxiety. Nothing was really wrong -- my family and I were healthy, my career was busy and successful -- I was just feeling vaguely down and in need of a friend who could raise my spirits, someone who would meet me for coffee and let me rant until the clouds lifted. I dialed my best friend, who now lives across the country in California, and got her voicemail. That's when it started to dawn on me -- lonesomeness was at the root of my dreariness. My social life had dwindled to almost nothing, but somehow until that moment I'd been too busy to notice. Now it hit me hard. My old friends, buddies since college or even childhood, know everything about me; when they left, they had taken my context with them.B) Research has shown the long-range negative consequences of social isolation on one's health. But my concerns were more short-term. I needed to feel understood right then in the way that only a girlfriend can understand you. I knew it would be wrong to expect my husband to replace my friends: He couldn't, and even if he could, to whom would I then complain about my husband? So I resolved to acquire new friends -- women like me who had kids and enjoyed rolling their eyes at the world a little bit just as I did. Since I'd be making friends with more intention than I'd ever given the process, I realized I could be selective, that I could in effect design my ownsocial life. The down side, of course, was that I felt pretty frightened.C) After all, it's a whole lot harder to make friends in midlife that it is when you're younger -- a fact woman I've spoken with point out again and again. As Leslie Danzig, 41, a Chicago theater director and mother, sees it, when you're in your teens and 20s, you're more or less friends with everyone unless there's a reason not to be. Your college roommate becomes your best pal at least partly due to proximity. Now there needs to be a reason to be friends. "There are many people I'm comfortable around, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them friends. Comfort isn't enough to sustain a real friendship," Danzig says.D) At first, finding new companions felt awkward. At 40 I couldn't run up to people the way my 4-year-old daughters do in the playground and ask, "Will you be my friend? Every time you start anew relationship, you're vulnerable again," agrees Kathleen Hall, D Min, founder and CEO of the Stress Institute, in Atlanta. "You're asking, 'Would you like to come into my life?' It makes us self-conscious."E) Fortunately, my discomfort soon passed. I realized that as a mature friend seeker my vulnerability risk was actually pretty low. If someone didn't take me up on my offer, so what: I wasn't in junior high, when I might have been rejected for having the wrong clothes or hair. At my age I have amassed enough self-esteem to realize that I have plenty to offer.F) We're all so busy, in fact, that mutual interests -- say, in a project, class, or cause that we already make time for -- become the perfect catalysts for bringing us in contact with candidates for camaraderie. Michelle Mertes, 35, a teacher and mother of two in Wausau, Wisconsin, says anew friend she made at church came as a pleasant surprise. "In high school I chose friends based on their popularity and how being part of their circle might reflect on me. Now's it's our shared values and activities that count." Mertes says her pal, with whom she organized the church's youth programs, is nothing like her but their drive and organizational skills make them ideal friends.G) Happily, as awkward as making new friends can be, self-esteem issues do not factor in -- or if they do, you can easily put them into perspective. Danzig tells of the mother of a child in her son's pre-school, a tall, beautiful woman who is married to a big-deal rock musician. "I said to my husband, she's too cool for me,'" she jokes. "I get intimidated by people. But once I got to know her, she turned out to be pretty laid-back and friendly." In the end there was no chemistry between them, so they didn't become good pals. "I realized that we weren't each other's type, but it wasn't about hierarchy." What midlife friendship is about, it seems, is reflecting the person you've become (or are still becoming) back at yourself, thus reinforcing the progress you've made in your life.H) Harlene Katzman, 41, a lawyer in New York City, notes that her oldest friends knew her back when she was less sure of herself. As much as she loves them, she believes they sometimes respond to issues in light of who she once was. An old chum has the goods on you. With recently made friends, you can turn over a new leaf.I) A new friend, chosen right, can also help you point your boat in the direction you want to go. Hanna Dershowitz, 39, an attorney and mother in Los Angeles, found that a new acquaintance from work was exactly what she needed in a friend. In addition to liking and respecting Julia, Dershowitz had a feeling that the fit and athletic younger woman would help her to get in shape.J) While you're busy making new friends, remember that you still need to nurture your old ones. We asked Marla Paul, author of The Friendship Crisis: Finding, Making, and Keeping Friends When You "re Not a Kid Anymore, for the best ways to maintain these important relationships. Keep in touch. Your friends should be a priority; schedule regular lunch dates or coffee catch-up sessions, no matter how busy you are. Know her business. Keep track of important events in a friend's life and show your support. Call or e-mail to let her know you're thinking of her. Speak your mind. Tell a friend (politely) if something she did really upset you. If you can't be totally honest, then you need to reexamine the relationship. Accept her flaws. No one is perfect, so work around her quirks --she's chronically late, or she's a bit negative -- to cut down on frustration and fights. Boost her ego. Heartfelt compliments make everyone feel great, so tell her how much you love her new sweater or what a great job she did on a work project.21. Leslie Danzig thought making friends at one's middle age needed some reasons.22. A well-chosen new friend can help you go in the direction that you like.23. A few years ago the author felt lonely and depressed when she phoned her best friend in another city who was much wanted then but unavailable.24. According to Kathleen Hall, one might feel sensitive in the first curse of making new friends.25. Midlife friendship can help you realize your direction of life and reinforce the progress you've made in your life.26. In Mafia Paul's book, to be a better friend, you should keep track with your friends, care for your friend's job, express yourself, accept her flaws and compliment your friend for her/his good dressing and job.27. For the author, a girl friend might be the right person to under "stand her and erase her negative feeling.28. According to Michelle Metes, midlife friendship is based on the shared values and activities29. As a mature friend seeker, the author finds herself with enough confidence to offer and take rejection with grace.30. With newly made friends, you can have a chance to take on a new look in your life.Section C (2’×10=20’)Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage 1Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. One of the bitterest and most time-worm debates in student union bars up and down the country is resolved as academic research confirms that in financial terms at least, arts degrees are a complete waste of time. Getting through university boosts students’ earnings by 25%, on a weighted average, or $220,000 over their lifetime, according to Professor Ian Walker of Warwick University--but if they study Shakespeare or the peasants’ revolt instead of anatomy of contract law, those gains are likely to be completely wiped out.The government is about to allow universities to charge students up to $3,000 a year for their degrees, arguing that it’s a small price to pay compared with the financial rewards graduates reap later in life. But Prof. Walker’s research shows there are sharp variations in returns according to which subject a student takes.Law, medicine and economics or business are the most lucrative choices, making their average earnings 25% higher, according to the article, published in the office for national statistics’ monthly journal. Scientists get 10-15% extra. At the bottom of the list are arts subjects, which make only a “small” difference to earnings--a small negative one, in fact. Just ahead are degrees in education, which leave hard pressed teachers an average of 5% better off a year than if they had left school at 18.“It’s hard to resist the conclusion that what students learn does matter a lot; and some subject areas give more modest financial returns than others,” Prof. Walker said. As an economist, he was quick to point out that students might gain non-financial returns from arts degrees. “Studying economics might be very dull, for example, and studying post-modernism might be a lot of fun.”31.What is the best title for the passage?A. Professor Walker’s ResearchB. How to Make Big Money.C. Differences Between Science and Arts Degrees.D. Studying Arts Has Negative Financial Outcome.32. Universities charge students a rather high tuition mainly because_____.A. they provide the students with very prosperous subjects to learnB. they assume that their graduates can earn much more than they had paidC. they don‘t get financial support from the governmentD. they need much revenue to support the educational expenses33. The word “lucrative” (Line 1, Para. 3) most probably means _____.A. sensibleB. creativeC. profitableD. reliable34. Law, medical and business graduates could earn 25% more than ______.A. education graduatesB. arts graduatesC. those who had not studied at the universityD. the average income35. We can safely conclude that the author ______.A. regards arts degrees as meaninglessB. finds this result disappointing and unfairC. wants the students to think twice before they decide what to learn in collegeD. holds that arts degrees are still rewarding despite its scarce financial returnsPassage 2Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage. Some radio signals were heard in 1967. They were coming from a point in the sky where there was unknown stars. They were coming very regularly, too: about once a second, if they were controlled by clock. The scientists who heard the signals did not tell anybody else. They were rather afraid to tell in case they frightened people. The signals were coming from a very small body--no bigger, perhaps, than the earth. Was that why no light could be seen from it? Or were the signals coming from a planet that belonged to some other star? There was no end to the questions, but the scientists kept the news secret. “Perhaps there are intelligent beings out there,” they thought. Who are trying to send messages to other planets, or to us? So the news was not given to the newspaper. Instead, the scientists studied the signals and searched for others like them...Well, all that happened in 1967 and 1968. Since then scientists have learnt more about those strange, regular, radio signals. And they have told the story, of course. The signals do not come from a planet; they come from a new kind of star called a “pulsar”. About a hundred other pulsars have now been found, and most of them are very like the first one.Pulsars are strong radio stars. They are the smallest but the heaviest stars we know at present. A handful of pulsar would weigh a few thousand tons. Their light--if they give much light--is too small for us to see. But we can be sure of this, no intelligent beings are living on them.36. The radio signals discussed in this passage____.A. were regularB. were controlled by a clockC. were heard in 1967 onlyD. were secret messages37. The radio signals were sent by____.A. a satelliteB. a planetC. a sky body which was unknown at that timeD. intelligent beings who were unknown at that time38. The scientists did not tell people about the signals because____.A. the signals stood for secret messagesB. people would ask them too many questionsC. they did not want to frighten peopleD. they stood for unimportant messages39. A pulsar is____.A. a small heavy star which sends out strong radio signals and cannot be seenB. a small heavy planet which sends out strong radio signals and cannot be seenC. a small heavy satellite which sends out strong radio signals and cannot beseenD. a small intelligent being who sends out strong radio signals and cannot beseen40. Which of the following is true?A. One of the pulsars found by scientists sends radio signals.B. Pulsar began to send radio signals in 1967.C. Scientists have searched for pulsars for many years but found none.D. Scientists have found many pulsars since 1967.Part III Translation (35’)Section A (5’×5 = 25’َ)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English.41.学生的学习不应局限于课堂。

People who live in the city also joined in making their city one of the most livable places in South America.Today city planners around the world are looking for ways to provide more room for living and less room for cars. In America, public transport has increased over 2 % since the mid 1990s — not much but a start. More and more people leave their cars at home and get on buses, trains or even ride a bike to work. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice by writing the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet(机读纸).7.Passage OnePeople have grown taller over the last century, with South Korean women shooting up by more than 20cm on average, and Iranian men gaining 16.5cm. A global study looked at the average height of 18-year-olds in 200 countries in 1914 and 2014.The results reveal that while Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men have risen from 12th place to claim top spot with an average height of 182.5cm. Larvian women, meanwhile, rose from 28th place in 1914 to become the tallest in the world a century later, with an average height of 169.8cm.James Bentham, a co-author of the research from Imperial College, London, says the global trend is likely to be due primarily to improvements in nutrition and healthcare. “An individual's genetics has a big influence on their height, but once you average over whole populations, genetics plays a less key role” he added.A little extra height brings a number of advantages, says Elio Riboli of Imperial College. “Being taller is associated with longer life expectancy,” he said. “This is largely due to a lower risk ofdying of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease among taller people.”But while height has increased around the world, the trend in many countries of north and sub-Saharan Africa causes concern, says Riboli. While height increased in Uganda and Niger during the early 20th century, the trend has reversed in recent years, with height decreasing among 18-year-olds.“One reason for these decreases in height is the economic situation in the 1980s,” said Alexander Moradi of the University of Sussex. The nutritional and health crises that followed the policy of structural adjustment, he says, led to many children and teenagers failing to reach their full potential in terms of height.Bentham believe the global trend of increasing height has important implications. “How tall we are now is strongly influenced by the environment we grew up in,” he said. “If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier and more productive for decades to come.”(5分)(1).What does the global study tell us about people’s height in the last hundred years?(1分)A.There is a remarkable difference across continents.B.There has been a marked increase in most countries.C.The increase in people’s height has been quickening.D.The increase in women’s height is bigger than in men’s.(2).What does James Bentham say about genetics in the increase of people’s height?(1分)A.It counts less than generally thought.B.It outweighs nutrition and healthcare.C.It impacts more on an individual than on population.D.It plays a more significant role in females than in males.(3).What does Elio Riboli say about taller people?(1分)A.They tend to live longer.B.They enjoy an easier life.C.They generally risk fewer fatal diseases.D.They have greater expectations in life.(4).What do we learn about 18-year-olds in Uganda and Niger?(1分)A.They grow up slower than their peers in other countries.B.They are actually shorter than their earlier generations.C.They find it hard to bring their potential into full play.D.They have experienced many changes of government.(5).What does James Bentham suggest we do?(1分)A.Watch closely the global trend in children's development.B.Make sure that our children grow up to their full height.C.Try every means possible to improve our environment.D.Ensure our children grow up in an ideal environment.8.Passage TwoIf you were like most children, you probably got upset when your mother called you by a sibling's (兄弟姐妹) name. How could she not know you? Did it mean she loved you less?Probably not. According to the first research to tackle this topic head-on, misnaming the most familiar people in our life is a common cognitive (认知的) error that has to do with how our memories classify and store familiar names. The study, published online in April in the journal Memory and Cognition, found that the “wrong” name is not random but is invariably fished out from the same relationship pond: children, siblings, friends. The study did not examine the possibility of deep psychological significance to the mistake, says psychologist David Rubin, “but it does tell us who’s in and who’s out of the group”. The study also found that within that group, misnamings occurred where the names shared initial or internal sounds, like Jimmy and Joanie or John and Bob. Physical resemblance between people was not a factor. Nor was gender. The researchers conducted five separate surveys of more than 1,700 people Some of the surveys included only college students; others were done with a mixed age population. Some asked subjects about incidents where someone close to them--- family or friend---had called them by another person’s name. The other surveys asked about times when subjects had themselves called someone close to them by the wrong name. All the surveys found that people mixed up names within relationship groups such as grandchildren, friends and siblings but hardly ever crossed these boundaries. In general, the study found that undergraduates were almost as likely as old people to make this mistake and men as likely as women. Older people and women made the mistake slightly more often, but that may be because grandparents have more grandchildren to mix up than parents have children. Also, mothers may call on their children more often than fathers, given traditional gender norms. There was no evidence that errors occurred more when the misnamer was frustrated, tired or angry.(5分)(1).How might people often feel when they were misnamed?(1分)A.Unwanted.B.Unhappy.C.Confused.D.Indifferent.(2).What did David Rubin's research find about misnaming?(1分)A.It is related to the way our memories work.B.It is a possible indicator of a faulty memory.C.It occurs mostly between kids and their friends.D.It often causes misunderstandings among people.(3).What is most likely the cause of misnaming?(1分)A.Similar personality traits.B.Similar spellings of names.C.Similar physical appearance.D.Similar pronunciation of names.(4).What did the surveys of more than 1,700 subjects find about misnaming?(1分)A.It more often than not hurts relationships.B.It hardly occurs across gender boundaries.C.It is most frequently found in extended families.D.It most often occurs within a relationship groups.(5).Why do mothers misname their children more often than fathers?(1分)A.They suffer more frustrations.B.They become worn out more often.C.They communicate more with their children.D.They generally take on more work at home.得分阅卷人五、Part II Reading Comprehension Section B (共1题,共10分)9.Directions: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Please write your answers on the Answer Sheet (机读纸).1.How you approach studying matters(A-C)2.Where you study is important(D-E)3. Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t(F-G)4. Outline and rewrite your notes(H)5. Practice by yourself or with friends(I)6.Make a schedule you can stick to(J)7. Take breaks (and rewards!)(K)8. Keep healthy and balanced(L)9. Know what the expectations are for the class(M-N)(10分)A.Students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the competingthings for your attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if you’re inschool, you have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn't cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. You can begin studying smarter with these nine proven and effective study habits.B.Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or anopportunity to learn. That's fine, but researchers have found that how you approachsomething matters almost as much as what you do. Being in the right mindset isimportant in order to study smarter,C.Sometimes you can’t “force” yourself to be in the right mindset, and it is during such times that you should simply avoid studying If you’re distracted by a relationship issue, an upcoming game, or finishing an important project, then studying is just going to be an exercise in frustration. Come back to it when you’re not preoccupied (or obsessed!) by something else going on in your life.D.A lot of people make the mistake of studying in a place that really isn’t conductive to concentrating. A place with a lot of distractions makes for a poor study area. If you try and study in your dorm room, for instance, you may find the computer, TV, or a roommate more interesting than the reading material you’ re trying to digest.E.The library, a corner in a student lounge or study hall are good places to check out. Make sure to choose the quiet areas in these places, not the loud, central gathering areas. Investigate multiple places on-campus and off-campus; don't just pick the first one you find as “good enough” for your needs and habits. Finding an ideal study place is important, because it’s one you can reliably count on for the next few years. F.Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, while it may seem ideal to type notes into a computer to refer back to later, computers are a powerful distraction for many people because they can do so many different things. Playing games, going online, surfing the Web, and answering emails are all wonderful distractions that have nothing to do with studying. So ask yourself whether you really need a computer to take notes, or whether you can make do with the old fashioned paper and pen or pencil.G.Don’t forget the things you need to study for the class, exam or paper you’re focusing on for the study session. Nothing is more time consuming and wasteful than having to run back and forth regularly because you forget an important book, paper, or some other resource you need to be successful.H.Most people find that keeping to a standard outline format helps them boil information down to its most basic components. People find that connecting similar concepts together makes it easier to remember when the exam comes around. The important thing to remember in writing outlines is that an out-line only works as a learning tool when it is in your own words and structure. Every person is unique in how they put similar information together (called “chunking” by cognitive psychologists). So while you’re welcomed to copy other people’s notes or outlines, make sure you translate those notes and outlines into your own words and concepts. Failing to do this is what often causes many students to stumble in remembering important items. I.The old saying, practice makes perfect, is true. You can practice by yourself by testing yourself with either practice exams, past quizzes, or flash cards(depending on what kind of course it is and what's available). If a practice exam isn't available, you canmake one up for yourself and your classmates. If a practice or old exam from a course is available, use it as a guide ___do not study to the practice or old exam! Such exams help you understand the breadth of content and types of questions to expect, but are not the actual material to study for.J.Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time. But if you schedule study time just as your class time is scheduled, you’ll find it becomes much less of a hassle in the long run. Instead of lastminute cramming sessions, you’ll be better prepared because you haven’t put off all the studying into one 12-hour marathon. Spending 30 or 60 minutes every day you have a class studying for that class before or after is a lot easier and will allow you to actually learn more of the material.K.Because so many people view studying as a chore or task, it’s human nature to avoid it. If, however, you find rewards to help reinforce what you’re doing, you may be pleasantly surprised by the change you may find in your attitude over time.Rewards start by chunking study time into manageable components. Studying for 4 hours at a time with no breaks is not realistic or fun for most people. Studying for 1 hour, and then taking a 5-minute break and grabbing a snack is usually more sustainable and enjoyable. Divide study time into segments that make sense and work for you. If you have to digest a whole textbook chapter, find sections in the chapter and commit to reading and taking notes on one section at a time. Maybe you only do one section in a sitting, maybe you do two. Find the limits that seem to work for you.L.It’s hard to live a balanced life while in school, I know. But the more balance you seek out in your life, the easier every component in your life becomes. If you spend all of your time focusing on a relationship or a game, you can see how easy it is to be out of balance. When you're out of balance, the things you’re not focusing on such as studying become that much harder. Don't spend all of your time studying ___ have friends, keep in touch with your family, and find interests outside of school that you can pursue and enjoy.M.Different professors and teachers have different expectations for their students. While taking good notes and listening in class are good starts, you can do better by spending some time with the instructor or professor's assistant. Talking to the instructor early on especially if you foresee a difficult course ahead ___ will help you understand the course requirements and the professor's expectations. If you get a particularly bad grade on a paper or exam, talk to the instructor. Try and understand where things went wrong, and what you can do in the future to help reduce it from happening again.Don’t forget to learn!N.Studying isn’t just about passing an exam, as most students look at it as. Studying isan effort to actually learn things, some of which you might actually care about. So whileyou’ll have to take your share of classes that have little or nothing to do with yourinterests, you should still look for interesting things to take away from every experience.(1).___ There are always interesting things to be found in what you learn.(1分)(2).___ You should space your work out over shorter periods of time and not try to cram all ofyour studying into just one or two sessions.(1分)(3).___ Past test papers are only useful in that they give you a general idea of the subject areas tofocus on and help you identify the style of the questions.(1分)(4).___ It is important to know what the professors will be expecting of you when you sign up fortheir courses.(1分)(5).___ Studying can be a problem when you aren’t in the mood for it.(1分)(6).___ Only bring the necessary study tools with you when you go to your ideal study place.(1分)(7).___ Notes are only useful and helpful when they are written using your own words andconcepts.(1分)(8).___ Finding a positive study environment is very important.(1分)(9).___ In order to study efficiently, you have to have the right attitude.(1分)(10).___ Information reviewed amid distractions is less likely to be remembered.(1分)得分阅卷人六、Part II Reading Comprehension Section C (共1题,共10分)10.Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. For each of them there are four choices marked A) , B) , C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage One As people generally use the word “honor ” they do not do so in the context of thinking about moral virtue. As a result they often confuse honor with fame. A virtuous person is an honorable person, a person who ought to be honored by the community in which he or she lives. But the virtuous person does not seek honor, being secure in his or her own self-respect. Lack of honor does not detract from the efficacy of moral virtue as an operative factor in the pursuit of happiness —as a means to leading a good human life. Virtuous persons may be considered fortunate if their virtue is recognized and publicly applauded. Persons lacking moral virtue can achieve fame as readily as, or perhaps more easily than, those who have a high degree of moral virtue. Fame belongs to the great, the outstanding, and the exceptional, without regard to their virtue or lack of it. Infamy is fame, no less than popularity. The great scoundrel can be as famous as the great hero. There can be famous villains as well as famous saints. Existing in the reputation a person has, regardless of his or her accomplishments, fame does not tarnish as honor does when it is unmerited. We normally desire the esteem of our fellow human beings, but is not this wish for the esteem of others a desire for fame rather than for honor? A virtuous person will not seek fame or be unhappy for lack of it. For fame can be enjoyed by bad men and women, as well as good. When it is enjoyed by virtuous persons without being sought by them, it is not distinguishable from honor, for then it is deserved. 31. What does this passage mainly talk about? A. A virtuous person achieves both honor and fame. B. A virtuous person does not seek honor or fame. C. Honor and fame are different concepts. D. Honor and fame are not distinguishable. 32. A virtuous person leads a good human life by means of _________. A. presuming happiness B. achieving moral virtue C. seeking honor D. seeking fame 33. What tends to tarnish with time? A. The reputation a person has. B. A high degree of moral virtue. C. A person ’s accomplishments. D. Honor that is undeserved. 34. Fame differs from honor in that _______. A. bad men and women can enjoy fame B. the great people can enjoy fame C. fame can fade in color D. virtuous persons will not seek fame 35. Which of the following statements is TURE? A. A virtuous person deserves honor. B. A famous person deserves honor. C. A virtuous person is publicly identified. D. A famous person has great accomplishments. Passage Two If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky. If you s ay to your children “I’m sorry I got angry with you, but …”, what follows that “but” can render the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache ” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology. Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say “I’m sorry you’re upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.院系:班级: 姓名:学号:考场地点装订线Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I’m useless as a parent” does not commit a person to any specific improvement. These pseudo-apologies are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies. But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition, children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children’s expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that raiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent’s clothes without permission is not. 36. If a mother adds “but” to an apology, _______. A. she doesn’t feel that she should have apologized B. she does not realize that the child has been hurt C. the child may find the apology easier to accept D. the child may feel that he owes her an apology 37. According to the author, saying “I’m sorry you’re upset” most probably means “_______”. A. You have good reason to get upset B. I’m aware you’re upset, but I’m not to blame C. I apologize for hurting your feelings D. I’m at fault for making you upset 38. It is not advisable to use the general, all-covering apology because _______. A. it gets one into the habit of making empty promises B. it may make the other person feel guilty C. it is vague and ineffective D. it is hurtful and insulting 39. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry _______. A. the complexities involved should be ignored B. their ages should be taken into account C. parents need to set them a good example D. parents should be patient and tolerant 40. It can be inferred from the passage that apologizing properly is _______. A. a social issue calling for immediate attention B. not necessary among family membersC. a sign of social progressD. not as simple as it seems Section B: Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the blank is identified by a letter. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. Blanks 41 to 50 are based on the following passage. There are two factors which determine an individual ’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ 41 , some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, a (an)42 will have a low intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor in what happens to the individual is the sort of environment in which he is 43 . If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop. And he will never 44 the level of intelligence of which he is capable. The importance of environment in determining an individual ’s intelligence can be 45 by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brain at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in 46 foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor 47 opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be 48 intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to 49 their intelligence. Mark ’s I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the 50 , and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have scored at roughly the same level.院系: 班级: 姓名:学号:考场地点装订线Part III Vocabulary and Structure (10 points) Directions: There are 20 incomplete sentences in this part. It offers numerous physical, mental, and social benefits that contribute to an overall sense of well-being. In this essay, we will explore the importance of regular exercise and its positive impact on our lives.Firstly, regular exercise plays a vital role in improving our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as running, swimming, or cycling helps to strengthen our muscles and bones. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness, leading to a reduced risk of heart diseases and other chronic conditions. Furthermore, exercise promotes weight management and helps to prevent obesity, a growing problem in modern society. In addition to physical health, exercise greatly contributes to our mental well-being. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, often referred to as the "feel-good" hormones, which elevate our mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise can also alleviate symptoms of depression and improve overall cognitive function. It provides an opportunity for self-reflection and relaxation, acting as a positive outlet for coping with life's challenges.Furthermore, exercise offers a platform for social interaction, which is crucial for our overall well-being. Participating in group activities, such as team sports or fitness classes, allows us to connect with others who share similar interests. These social interactions foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. Moreover, exercise can serve as a bonding activity among friends, family members, or colleagues, leading to stronger relationships and increased social support. To conclude, regular exercise is essential for a healthy and fulfilling life.
