Online degree programs have come a long way since their early days. Traditional colleges an d universities have developed distance learning programs to accommodate individuals who would not otherwise have the time or funds to earn an advanced degree. Online programs require the same amount of study and work as a classroom program. If you are under the impression that c ourses offered online will be a walk in the park, think again! Online degree programs are often more difficult than traditional university programs due to the fact the work and study is left up to the student. Time management skills are crucial, since there is not a particular time of the day set aside specifically for study. It may take some time to become accustomed to this method of scholarship, but the pros of online classes may outweigh the cons in your situation.

The main difference between online degree programs and traditional higher education is the l ocation of learning. Instead of being confined to a stuffy classroom filled with students, these onli ne classes have a more personal feeling. While many students would be hesitant to speak one t o one with a class instructor, online programs find their students more willing to contact their pro fessors via e-mail. This great participation encourages better understanding of the course materia l. Of course, not attending a class also comes with additional barriers. A student must be equipp ed with time management skills in order to succeed in an online class. Students that lack the pr oper time management skills may find themselves overwhelmed with course work at the end of t he semester or falling behind in their studies.

Whether you choose to attend a traditional college or university or enroll in an online higher education program, the chances of success are equal. In the end, it is up to you in order to co mplete the course of study and earn your degree. For busy individuals or students wishing to ret urn to school without greatly affecting their everyday lives, an online degree program may be the best option.

Thanksgiving is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November. The month of November is in autumn, the main season for harvesting crops.

The writer O. Henry called Thanksgiving the one holiday that is purely American. It is not a religiou s holiday. But it has spiritual meaning.

Thanksgiving began with the first European settlers in America. They gathered their crops, celebrated and gave thanks for the food.

Tradition says Pilgrim settlers from England celebrated the first Thanksgiving in 1621. There is evide nce that settlers in other parts of America held earlier Thanksg iving celebrations. But the Pilgrims’ Thank sgiving story is the most popular.

The Pilgrims were religious dissidents who fled oppression in England. They went first to the Netherl ands. Then they left that country to establish a colony in North America. The Pilgrims landed in 1620 i n what later became known as Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Their voyage across the Atlantic Ocean was difficult. Their first months in America were difficult, to o. About one hundred Pilgrims landed just as autumn was turning to winter. During the cold months that followed, about half of them died.

When spring came, the Pilgrims began to plant crops. An American Indian named Squanto helped the m. When summer ended, the Pilgrims had a good harvest of corn and barley. There was enough food to

last through the winter.

The Pilgrims decided to hold a celebration to give thanks for their harvest. Writings from that time s ay Pilgrim leader William Bradford set a date late in the year. He invited members of a nearby Indian t ribe to take part. There were many kinds of food to eat. The meal included wild birds such as ducks, g eese and turkeys. That thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.

As the American colonies grew, many towns and settlements held thanksgiving or harvest celebrations.

[第五单元]; 第5小题:

43.

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoke n instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly accurate as a descripti on of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many chil dren will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises.

Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few mont hs one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intentio n to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enj oyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation leads on to deliberate imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then a rises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.

It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will chan ge as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of “mama” as a greeting fo r his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times f or his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gaine d when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.

Part I Reading comprehension (40 points) Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each passage is followed by five questions or incomplete statements. For each of them there are four choices. Choose the best answer. Passage 1 Ever since Stephanie?s 13th birthday we have been receiving comments from other adults expressing their sympathies because our daughter is now a teenager. We?ve heard everything from,“Sure she?s a good kid,but just wait, now that she?s teenager…”to the ever inspiring,“Well, all kids are rotten when they are teenagers, just try to go through it the best way you can.”What?s more upsetting is that many of these insensitive adults feel the need to share their negative predictions well within the hearing of both our daughters. I know that teenagers can be moody(闷闷不乐)and difficult at times, but I?m 38 and I can also be difficult and moody. We worry about the future and want today?s kids to know that we care for them and that there are opportunities that wait for them. However, at the very point they set out on that journey toward adulthood we stand there watching them disapprovingly (不赞成),just waiting for them to make mistake.“just like we knew they would.”We tell them to respect themselves and to say no to drugs, yet we fail to set a positive example by treating them with kindness and consideration, demonstrating(示范)our respect for them. I have,at times been guilty of this behavior but am now realizing that the more I see each person as a person, the more I am pleasantly surprised in some way or another. For example,a few weeks ago my husband and I were having dinner at our favorite restaurant and two teenage boys came in and sat down right beside US.I must admit that my first thought was,“perfect, there goes our quiet, peaceful dinner.”I was so wrong! These young men were well behaved.quiet and left a nice tip for the waitress.Once I looked beyond the jeans so loose they were practically falling off and the multi-colored hair, I saw what fine people these kids were. Many of the people who, perhaps unknowingly, treat teens with disrespect are unhappy about the fact that pop singers and sports stars are our children?s heroes. I feel that unless We give them something better to go after, we really shouldn?t complain. 1.When their children reach their teens, parents usually expect_________. A.trouble B.sympathy C.congratulations D.inspiring comments 2.In the author?s opinion, the trouble with parents is that________. A.they are too watchful of their teenage children B.they are too concerned about their children?s future C.they fail to treat teenagers with enough kindness and respect D.they speak ill of their children within their hearing 3.When two teenagers came into the restaurant and sat beside the author, her first thought was that__________. A.they were wrong to have chosen this restaurant for dinner B.something interesting was going to happen over dinner C.her quiet dinner with her husband would be ruined D.she and her husband were going to have a pleasant surprise 4.What does the author think of the two teenage boys? A.They may become nice people if they are willing to change their lifestyle. B.They are typical of teenagers who wear ill-fitting clothes and dye their hair. C.They?re fine young men despite their loose jeans and multi-colored hair. D.They will respect you if you respect them. 5.What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A.There is nothing wrong with teenagers admiring pop singers and sports starts. B.If our children admire pop singers and sports starts,it is the parents who are to blame. C.Pop singers and sports stars should not be heroes of our children. D.Parents should set a good example for their children to follow.
