第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C和D)中,选出最佳选项

A

It was New Year’s Night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal --- the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and remorse. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts.

The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads --- one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and filled with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.

He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, ―O youth, return! O my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I’ll choose the better way!‖ But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.

He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall down from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His regret, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered on life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were now hono red and happy on this New Year’s Night.

The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: ―Come back, my early days! Come back!‖

And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year’s Night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

Those who still wander on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry

bitterly, but in vain: ―O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!‖

Roy wasn’t the only one to receive his call-up papers. Stephen Napier’s call-up came at the beginning of February and he was pleased to find that he would be going into the Royal Air Force (RAF).

His father was not so pleased and made his feelings known as he and Stephen were on their daily walk. It was the first step in his plans for Stephen to take over the estate (地产) when the time came, and although Stephen was well aware of this, he could think of no reason not to accompany him.

―Thought you’d forgotten that nonsense. Still, I dare say I could pull a few strings to get you to the Army...‖

―No, Father! I have told you I want to learn to fly. What chance woul d I have to do that in the Army? I’d be better off in the Navy--at least they’ve got the Fleet Air Ann. But I have been put in the RAF and that’s where I want to be, so let’s leave it at that.‖ His face went red. Sent to his father’s school and then to Cam bridge, much to his satisfaction, he had never had to defend his own desires and his father was a hard man to oppose.

The father glared at Stephen, ―No, I won’t leave it at that. I want to know what other ridiculous ideas are in your head. For a start, what’s all this about America?‖

―America?‖

―Yes. All those books I saw in your room the other d ay. Brochures about emigration.‖ The big, silvered head lowered, like that of a bull about to charge. ―Don’t trouble to deny it.‖

―I won’t, Fath er. Some men at Cambridge have been talking about it. They want people like us here, mathematicians and scientists, for all kinds of research--the sort of research I could do. It would be a worthwhile life for me.‖

The father responded exactly as his son had known he would. ―You’ve got a worthwhile life here! You’ve got an estate to run!‖

―No, Father. You’ve got an estate to run. I never asked for it. Why not ask Baden to do this stuff? He perhaps can make a good job of it, but I...‖

Autumn means different things to different people. It all depends on your personality, said British naturalist Richard Mabey. "Personality shapes your view of the season," he said. "You may see it as a fading away, a packing up, or as a time of packing in another sense – the excited gathering of resources before a long journey."

If this is true, perhaps it tells us a little about, for instance, Thomas Hood, the 19th Century English poet. About November, he wrote:

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease

No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees

November!

On the other hand, another English poet John Keats, already sensing he was seriously ill, was inspired by a late September day to pen one of the most famous poems in the English

language,To Autumn. He wrote to a friend afterwards, saying that there was something comforting and healing about it.

According to Richard Mabey, Keats has the biological evidence on his side. Autumn is not a time of slowing down, but a time of new beginnings and great movements of creatures. For example, just at the moment that Keats’ "gathering swallows" (in To Autumn)are departing for Africa, millions of creatures are fleeing from the frozen north like Iceland, Greenland and Russia to winter along the east and south coasts of Britain. People might argue that it is the coloring of the leaves and their eventual fall that make people feel sad about autumn. But no one is sure why trees drop their leaves in the first place. It may be to rid the poisonous material trees collect over the summer. More likely, it is a way of reducing the loss of water, which tree roots find hard to take in from cold soil.

A century after Keats, the American poet Loren Eiseley wrote in his journal:

Suppose we saw ourselves burning like maples in a golden autumn.

And that we could disintegrate(消逝)like autumn leaves…

Would not our attitude towards death be different?

64. From Thomas Hood’s poem, we may infer that _______.

A. he suffered a lot from cold November

B. he missed the shining summer days very much

C. he had a negative attitude towards autumn

D. he enjoyed butterflies and bees very much

65. Which word can best describe Loren Eiseley’s attitude towards autumn?

A.Optimistic. B.Fearful. C.Doubtful. D.Realistic.

66. Which of the following is more likely to make people sad?

A. Swallows leaving for Africa.

B. Wild geese arriving in Britain.

C. The fall of tree leaves.

D. Their lack of knowledge of trees.

67. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Man can never live long, just as leaves must leave the tree annually.

B. Man is different from autumn leaves, which will come again the next spring.

C. Man should treat death calmly, just like autumn leaves fall to the ground.

D. Man should have a positive attitude towards death, quite different from autumn leaves.

D

A gentle breeze blew through Jennifer’s hair. The golden red sun was setting. She was on the beach, looking up at the fiery (火红的) ball. She was amazed by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.

The atmosphere relaxed her. After all she had been through, this was what she needed. ―It’s getting late,‖ she thought, ―I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.‖She wondered how her parents would react, when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted. She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters she would have been

safe in her house.

It was really getting dark now. The sun had set a few minutes before and it was getting cold too. She wished she had her favorite sweater on: it kept her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought disappeared when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now... It all seemed deserted. She couldn’t understand what was going on.

She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen where she saw a note written by her father. It said: ―Dear Ellen, there is some coffee ready. I went looking.‖ Ellen was her mother but — where was she? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’ room. She went in. Then she saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up, something was different... she wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas (睡衣).

It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice, ―Are you feeling better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.‖

68. Three days later Jennifer came back home ______.

A. at sunrise

B. at sunset

C. at night

D. at midday

69. What does the underlined phrase ―This thought‖ most probably mean?

A. The idea of going back home.

B. Her anxiety about her parents.

C. The feeling of being warm in her favorite sweater.

D. The feeling of getting back home safely.

70. What can we infer from this passage?

A. In fact Jennifer’s mother had been sick for days.

B. As Jennifer walked towards home, she became increasingly scared.

C. When she found the garden deserted, she realized she was wrong.

D. Having experienced a lot outside, Jennifer felt home was safest for her.

What is a lifestyle and how is that different from a life? A lifestyle is about pursuing brand names and buying identity and social influence. A lifestyle gives a false sense of acceptability that comes form others’ recognizing what you’ve bought. If your car, clothes, and house are expensive, you’re considered stylish. If you have the right kind of job or go to the right social gatherings, you receive the approval of others. In the end, your self-respect is always ruled by others with no appreciation of you as an individual.

A life, on the other hand, is very different. First, a life is what you lead when you know what matters most to you. It’s very simple and is connected to what you know is important and being willing to put that first. Second, when you choose a life, your self-respect comes from what’s inside you, not what others think about you.

A lifestyle is expensive monetarily (从金钱角度) and personally, because it costs a great

deal to keep up appearances and do what you think is socially acceptable. A life is not expensive. Rather than using up personal or financial resources, a life produces energy. If you find out what your true belie fs and values are and choose to live by these, the opinions of others don’t drive your life. This is not an issue of avoiding luxury; it’s about freeing yourself from the mindless consumption. It’s about making the choices that are in agreement with your v alues, instead of consuming your bank account or energy for no heart-driven reason.

How can you make the change? Understand the difference between a life and a lifestyle. Analyze your current lifestyle to see what costs you money, time, and energy to maintain it. Let go and give space to what is really important to you, what supports you and brings you joy.

Three brothers, who worked for the same company, received different wages due to their diffe rent attitudes towards their work, which shows right attitude is of great help to one’s life.

Their different attitudes towards their work result in their different wages. From the story I can conclude that those who take positive attitude towards work will be rewarded.

Different attitudes lead to different results. Take Xiao Hua as an example. They are both my classmates. Not only does he put his heart into study but he is also helpful both to teachers and students. So he has become a top student in our class, even in the grade. With his diligence and concentration, he is bound to succeed in entering his ideal university. However, Xiao Li never cares about his study because he is addicted to playing games, he turns a deaf ear to the teachers’ advice. As a result, he falls far behind others in his study.

In my opinion, attitude is everything. No matter what you do, you must do it well even if you may fail many times. Sooner or later you will be rewarded for your positive attitude towards your work or life.

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held?
