Healthier Fast Food?HealthDay July 17, 2012

A health threat in our food is getting a little harder to find and that may be a good thing for your heart and your waistline.

Americans have a complicated relationship with trans fat. This ingredient raises the risk of cardiac disease, but it's found in a lot of fast food and junk food.

In 2007, New York City started limiting the amount of trans fat that restaurants could put in their products.

In a new study from the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers analyzed the foods that thousands of customers bought from New York fast-food restaurants before and after the regulation.

Overall, the average food purchase under the new regulations had about 2 and a half fewer grams of trans fat, or about 22 calories worth. According to the researchers, that's enough to make a real difference in people's heart health.

If you want to remove even more trans fat from your diet, cutting back on baked goods and processed foods is a good strategy.

I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV, bringing you another ounce of prevention.

Treating Egg Allergy HealthDay July 19, 2012

Food allergies affect an estimated 5% of children under the age of 5 and 4% of older kids in the U.S.

Egg is a common trigger and can, like other allergens, cause severe or life-threatening reactions.

Avoiding eggs and egg products is currently the only approved treatment.

Researchers wanted to find out whether exposing children with egg allergy to small, but escalating doses of the food would desensitize them.

In a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 55 children, ages 5 to 11, were given either egg-white powder or a placebo. Those who passed the initial phases of the food challenge were then given cooked egg. If they still had no response, they were placed on a diet that allowed egg consumption and were evaluated after 6 and 12 months.

The results:

About 28% of the kids made it to the final phase of the study and were able to eat egg

successfully.

The researchers say this shows that oral immunotherapy can desensitize a high percentage of children with this allergy.

Drinking and Your Health

HealthDay

July 20, 2012

Is that beer, glass of wine or cocktail you enjoy good or bad for your health?

The answer, according to experts, may be both!

Recent studies have concluded that moderate alcohol consumption benefits the heart. Drinking alcohol, particularly red wine, has been linked to a reduced risk of health concerns including heart disease, stroke and dementia.

Red wine contains antioxidants and other substances that according to research help dilate the arteries and reduce inflammation in the body. A spokesperson for the American Heart Association tells Health Day TV that, Alcohol can definitely be part of a heart-healthy diet if you're drinking responsibly.

That means up to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. One drink is 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or a 1.5 ounce shot of liquor.

The important thing to know more is not better. Alcohol can raise your triglyceride levels, lead to higher blood pressure and cause weight gain.

Studies have also linked excessive drinking with an increased risk for certain cancers, asthma and allergies.

Bottom line, according to the American Heart Association, alcohol is only beneficial if you drink at a low level, don't take certain medications, don't have liver disease and are not pregnant.

You can find out more by visiting the Heart Association's website.

Diet Secrets?

HealthDay

July 13, 2012

Ladies: if you're looking to lose weight, you may want to cancel that lunch date!

A brand new study offers some important weight loss clues. The findings:

?Avoid eating in restaurants... especially mid-day

?Stop skipping meals

?And do your best to keep a detailed food journal.

The study, just published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, reviewed a wide range meal patterns and diet-related behaviors in 123 overweight and obese postmenopausal women for 12 months. The goal was to identify behaviors that added up to calorie reduction, and ultimately, led to weight loss.

As it turned out, women who kept food journals consistently lost about 6 pounds more than those who did not. Those who admitted skipping meals lost nearly eight fewer pounds than women who ate regular meals. And women who ate out for lunch at least weekly lost on average 5 fewer pounds than those who ate out less.

Because postmenopausal weight gain is a struggle for many women, the researchers believe using these basic strategies can help spur diet success.

A Toast to Bone Health?

HealthDay

July 12, 2012

Cheers ladies, a bit of moderate drinking may be good for your bones.

A small study, just published in the Journal of the North American Menopause Society, followed 40 healthy post-menopausal women who regularly drank one to two alcoholic beverages per day, did not use hormone replacement therapy and had no history of breaks due to brittle bones. The participants were asked to abstain from drinking for two weeks, and had DEXA scans to measure bone density and blood tests to track bone formation markers at the beginning and at the end.

The researchers found evidence of increased bone turnover a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures - during the two-week period when the participants stopped drinking. Even more surprising: when the women resumed their normal drinking, their bone turnover rates returned to previous levels.

While excessive drinking is never advised, the researchers say their findings lend support to the idea that having a glass of wine or beer regularly may help slow bone loss.

Controlling Diabetes

HealthDay

July 10, 2012

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes. Many of them use insulin therapy to try to keep their blood sugar levels in check and reduce complications.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University wanted to know which of the many innovations in insulin delivery and monitoring work best. The team reviewed 33 published studies to evaluate how multiple daily insulin injections compared to the use of the insulin pump. They also looked at the new blood glucose monitors that allow real time results versus the old fashioned finger sticks diabetics must endure.

The results, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, showed that the insulin pump and multiple-daily injections have similar effects on glycemic control. But the insulin pump performed better for children and adults with Type 1 diabetes. As for blood-glucose monitoring, real-time monitoring allowed patients to maintain a lower blood glucose level compared to

self-monitoring.

The researchers concluded that based on the evidence, physicians can use patient preference to guide treatment decisions when it comes to the new devices.

Coffee, Tea and Bad Conduct

HealthDay

July 9, 2012

Many expectant women give up caffeine due to fears that it will harm their growing baby. New research out of the Netherlands may allay one of their caffeine concerns. The aim of the study was to compare prenatal(产前的)caffeine intake of the Moms against their children's behavior at age 5. More than 8-thousand pregnant women filled out a questionnaire about the types and amounts of coffee, tea and cola they consumed during one specific week. Researchers then calculated their average caffeine intake per day. Years later, most participated in the follow-up, filling out a behavioral screening survey about their child. The results: Prenatal caffeine intake was not associated with a higher risk for hyperactivity,

attention problems, emotional issues, bad conduct, or peer relationship challenges. While this study found no link between caffeine and behavior problems, there are other studies that suggest too much of this stimulant may increase the risk of miscarriage(流产). The March of Dimes recommends that women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant consume no more than 200 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per day. 2D vs. 3D Movies

HealthDay

July 6, 2012

Have you ever felt a little queasy when you're watching an action packed 3D movie? There may be a medical reason behind it.

Vision researchers in Oregon enlisted adults of various ages to watch the same movie in both 2D and 3D. They sat at different angles and distances. 21-percent of participants reported vision and motion symptoms while watching the movie in 3D, compared to just 12-percent with 2D viewing.

Symptoms related to 3D viewing, like double or blurred vision, dizziness, disorientation and nausea, were affected by where the participant sat and their age. Younger viewers who really got into the film suffered for it. Sitting right in front and looking straight ahead caused the most motion sickness. Older viewers actually had more visual and motion sickness symptoms in 2D viewing.

The good news: symptoms can be reduced if you sit farther back from the screen, and at an angle.

I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV, with the news from today that can lead to health tomorrows.

Ontario Health Minister George Smitherman made the announcement Friday, as a government-appointed panel released its recommendations. The report contains 10 recommendations, including setting up a regulatory college to oversee traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, as well as limiting those who can perform acupuncture to qualified, regulated practitioners. The other recommendations include: Establish different classes of practitioners, based on level of education, competency and experience. Designate practitioners who use Chinese herbal medicines as herbalists. Regulated health professional who use acupuncture in their practice should only be authorized to perform it if they meet educational and competency requirements set out by their college or board. The province's 3,500 acupuncturists and Chinese medical practitioners currently have no set rules or standards to guide them. Beyond Parrots Now, you may already know that parrots and other birds that mimic human speech are also good at keeping time to a musical beat. Scientists think it’s a side effect of repeating human speech sounds. But researchers have found that both sea lions and bonobos are also capable of bopping to a beat. Researchers beat a drum at around 280 beats per minute and found that bonobos were able to pick up the beat and play it on a specially designed drum. Now, given that bonobos are closely related to humans, their rhythmic ability might not sound very surprising. In the wild, bonobos are known to beat on hollow trees. But sea lions are a different story they’re not known to follow or pick up a beat. So it was surprising when researchers working with a sea lion they named Ronan were able to train her to bob her head in time to different tempos. More Widespread Beyond the fact that teaching a sea lion to groove to a beat is pretty cool, it also suggests that the ability may be
