Once there was a man traveling in a faraway village. As he was passing the elephants,he suddenly stopped. He found that these huge elephants were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains(锁链),no cages. It was clear that the elephants could,at any time, break away from their ropes but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and didn’t try to get away.“Well,”the trainer said,“when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and,at that age,it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up,they still believe they can not break away. They believe the rope can hold them,so they never try t o break free.”

How could it be? These animals could at any time break free from their ropes. But because they were always stuck right where they were, they believed they couldn’t.

How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English,or do you have to use your first language? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.

People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger, which they extend or stick out. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb(拇指)to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way,a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.

Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. A group of scientists studied aboriginal(土著的)people in Australia. These people don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even h ave words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers.

In a similar study, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology discovered that

people of the Piraha tribe(部落)in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees”, “more trees” or “many trees”. Professor Edward Gibson said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count,“But here is a gro up that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture,so they’ve never picked it up.”

Although all humans are able to understand quantities(数量),not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting. Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too.

I spoke at a middle school in 1995. When it was over, the headmaster asked me if I would visit a student. An illness had kept him at home. He wanted to meet me, thinking I knew about overcoming difficulties and going for dreams. I agreed.

During the drive to his home, I knew he was called Matthew, a real fighter. He had a muscle disease. I spent an afternoon talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He didn’t mention how he was made fun of being different, he just talked about his hope for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.

When we finished talking, I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming difficulties than I. He looked at it for a moment and handed it back, saying, “Rick, you are a champion. You earned

that medal. Someday, when I get to the Olympics and win my gold medal, I will show it to you.”

Last summer I heard from Matthew’s parents. They wanted me to read a letter he wrote to me a few days before his death.

Dear Rick,

I’ve kept all the letters you wrote to me. I told you someday I was going to the Olympics to win a gold medal. I know now I will never get to do that . But I know I am a champion. When I get to heaven, God will give me my gold medal, and when you get there, I will show it to you .

Marie was a single mother of two children in rural Missouri. She worked full-time during the day and sold handcrafted leather gifts on weekends. She also gave much spare time to many charities and community projects.

Then one day Marie received some shocking news from her doctor. She had cancer, and it was spreading rapidly. She had not enough money to put a cent in the medical treatments she would need. Teaching the second grade is always a challenge. Each student arrives at school with his own needs and difficulties.

One year I met a student named Billy. He could get angry very easily—sometimes even violent. Often Billy’s mom would call to tell me that he had had a specially emotional morning at home. On those mornings. On those mornings, I would be very careful and tried different ways to calm him down.

One week our class were studying pets. I brought my dog Rock to school for the day. Rock was a friendly two-year-old dog. He loved people—especially children. I was confident that the class would like him.

A few minutes before I expected Billy to arrive, the phone rang. It was Billy’s mom. She told

me that Billy had had a bad morning at home. As I was talking to his mom, Billy came into the classroom angrily. Rocky at once ran up to him, wagging(摇摆)his tail. The little boy was surprised at first, but then he began to laugh. The happy sound of his traveled through the phone line to his mother. She asked me, “Is that Billy?” “Yes,” I replied. “I brought my dog to school today. He is getting on well with Billy.”

“It seems Billy will be just fine, ” she said. Her voice was full of joy.

Throughout the day, Billy showed his caring and loving nature. He never left Rocky and took care of him, even telling other students to be quiet when Rocky was asleep.

Billy used to hate reading, but on this day he found a good dog story, and read it to Rocky. Rocky was a good listener and never minded if Billy missed a word. Billy read happily. My little dog was able to change Billy’s day from one of anger to one of joy, laught er, gentleness and love.

When I was a foreign teacher in China, every day I taught English to my students and they taught me about China. One day the topic mentioned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked to learn that not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them.

“Does your mom love you?” “Of course,” they answered.

“How do you know?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their c oncern. I was puzzled. So mom’s cooking and criticizing read us as “I love you”. “Then how do you say ‘I love you’ to her?” They agreed that getting good grades, followed by good jobs would be how they showed their love.

I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these queries in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different responses.

One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone I have more time to myself, I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”

In my family we all say “I love you” a lot. While it is true that we often say the words without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing(祝福) we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.

B. She is meeting her daughter at the door.

D. She is glad that she has more time to herself.

4. What’s the probably meaning of the underlined word?

A. Praise.

B. Rules.

C. Questions.

D. Instructions.

5. We can infer from the reading that ________.

A. the writer is from a big city of the USA

B. mothers always show their love to family

C. “I love you” means blessing and greeting now

The crowd at the airport moved forward. The passengers had been waiting for a couple of hours for an airline worker to open the door leading to the plane outside. No one was in a good mood. An old man fell down in the middle of the rush. His head hit the concrete(坚实的) floor. Blood gushed from his forehead. He appeared to be unconscious(昏迷). Everyone rushed past him, except for Dana. She called for help.

A minute later, a young airline worker showed up. Hardly looking at the old man, she told Dana to get aboard her plane. She said the old man would be okay, and walked away.

Dana screamed for help. An airport supervisor appeared. He told Dana to get on the plane. Dana said that she was not moving until an ambulance arrived. The supervisor said her plane would leave without her. Dana said that she didn’t care.

The ride home was not much more than five minutes but each minute dragged(吃力). We were stuck behind an old man. He wasn’t going more than 15 kilometers an hour. My dad started to shout, “Learn how to drive, Grandpa!” He hit the steering wheel with his hands. He was really angry.

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket(彩票)at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. The man who was robbed picked up the ticket, then won the £25,000 prize, managed to look for him, and handed over the cash.

The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tyre (轮胎)on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to “help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
